Thinking about this upgrade. How is your call quality, clearity on your Samsung Fascinate?

Hi,
Upgrading to driod 2 or Facinate, how is the call quaulity and clearity in the Fascinate? Need some real input.
Thank you

Overall, I think it is a great phone.  As with any mobile phone, you are not going to get everything you want.  There are some things that I wish were available on this phone, but overall, I am satisfied.
As for call clarity, I have read on other websites that noise cancellation and call clarity is an issue.  I have not noticed any problem.  The calls sound fine to me.
Pros: Great screen; fast; lots of nice features; small.
Cons: wish it had a front facing camera as well as a rear camera; wish it had better notifications for missed calls and voicemails instead of a little icon up top (though you can download any number of apps to take care of this issue).
Not an issue: Bing.  You will read a lot of people upset that Bing is the default search engine on this phone and that this caused a lot of people to not purchase this phone.  For me, it is a non-issue.  You can still use Google.  I put a Google shortcut on my home page and that solved that problem.  But some people are upset that Verizon did not give you a choice.
If you like the phone and the only reason you don't like it is because of Bing, then to me, that is not enough of a reason to not buy the phone.  I tested out the Fascinate with the Droid X and Droid Incredible.  I liked all the phones.  For me, the Droid X was too big.  The guy at Verizon told me the Incredible had the worst battery life.  I had told him that I wanted to be able to get through at least the whole day without having to charge the phone until over night.  He said that if you used the internet, texted, etc. on a regular basis, then not to get the Incredible because of the battery life.  That, coupled with the features with the Fascinate, caused me to get that phone.
Overall, you will find things you like about each phone and things you dislike.  Go to the store, try them all out, watch some videos online that compare the phones (there are a ton of videos on line that compare the Fascinate, X, and Incredible phones to each other), and that should help you.

    Not true at all.
I listen to music on my iphone all the time.
It is your position that anyone who does not agree with you does not listen to music?
    Really?
    What a leap.

+"A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges"+
    Seems to make sense..
I knew that lithium-ion batteries have no memory concerns, but still I thought that it was a good idea to charge and discharge the battery of a new iPod (or laptop) at least the first time..
    Any thoughts?

The reason it's sometimes recommended to do a full discharge/charge cycle on a new device is to calibrate the battery indicator. It doesn't do anything for the battery itself.
The quote you've given agrees with everything I've been taught about lithium-ion batteries.

  • Apple says not to carry your iphone near your body, but how are you supposed to carry it? What does everyone think about this?

Just curious, I don't see much about this topic, but apparently the radiation levels of this phone are very high. I bet most people carry their phones in their pockets, yet no one is asking about the fact that apple says not to.  Is this practical? Is this something to be concerned about? I don't care about a phone bending vs. my health being seriously affected.

I Suspect they are just covering their butts for possible future lawsuits. There are reports that some women who carry their (smaller) cell phones in their bra go on to develop breast rumors directly adjacent to where the phone usually sat. There are also studies that find nerve cell stimulation in the brain directly adjacent to the ear where a phone is being used. Three companies have now developed machines designed to use this effect to treat depression. There is much that is unknown about the effects of RF radiation, so phone companies logically want to avoid liability. No one really knows the risks.

  • Implicit Fact Column - am I thinking about this the right way?

My exploration of the Implicit Fact Column is below. Let me know if you think this is the intended usage.
When the BI Server sees a request where one Dimension is being constrained by another, it has to pick a fact table that contains references to these two dimensions. The "Implicit Fact Column", which is set in the Presentation Layer of the RPD is used to guide the BI Server towards one or more Fact tables that can be used to satisfy the request. In the absence of the Implicit Fact Column, I noticed that the BI Server was choosing random fact tables so I went exploring how this feature worked. I set the Implicit Fact column in my Presentation layer and then went looking to see how the queries were generated.
For my example, my two dimensions are Program and Channel. I want to see the list of Channels available for a Program. Without the Implicit Fact Column, the queries are of the form:
    select distinct T289.CHANNEL_NAME as c1,
    T36001.PROGRAM_NAME as c2
    from
    DIM_PROGRAMS T36001,
    DIM_CHANNELS T289,
    SomeRandomFactTable T41210
    where ( T289.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY = T41210.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY and T36001.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY = T41210.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY )
    order by c1, c2
The nice part about this is that there is only one set of Program / Channel combinations returned. The downside is that the Fact table that is chosen to resolve the combinations can be any Fact table under the purview of the BI Server. It doesn't even have to be in the same subject area where the Program and Channel were chosen. When I set the Implicit Fact Column, the queries are of the form:
    select distinct T289.CHANNEL_NAME as c1,
    T36001.PROGRAM_NAME as c2,
T35832.DIM_SITE_KEY /* this is the implicit fact column */
    from
    DIM_PROGRAMS T36001,
    DIM_CHANNELS T289,
    AFactTableMappedToFactColumn T35832
    where ( T289.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY = T35832.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY and T35832.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY = T36001.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY )
    order by c1, c2
I was happy that I could predict what Fact table was being used, but now the results are wrong as I get a duplicate set of records for every DIM_SITE_KEY / Channel / Program combination. I decided to play a little Algebra trick. Knowing that the DIM_SITE_KEY was a numeric value, I defined the Implicit fact column as DIM_SITE_KEY / DIM_SITE_KEY which will always result in a value of 1. Now I get queries that look like:
    select distinct T289.CHANNEL_NAME as c1,
    T36001.PROGRAM_NAME as c2,
    T35832.DIM_SITE_KEY / nullif( T35832.DIM_SITE_KEY, 0) as c3
    from
    DIM_PROGRAMS T36001,
    DIM_CHANNELS T289,
    AFactTableMappedToFactColumn T35832
    where ( T289.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY = T35832.DIM_CHANNEL_KEY and T35832.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY = T36001.DIM_PROGRAM_KEY )
    order by c1, c2
Since DIM_SITE_KEY / DIM_SITE_KEY is always equal to 1, I only get one set of Program / Channel combinations. I get the added bonus of knowing which set of Fact tables are going to be used to satisfy the request.

Perfect Analysis, But one important note is when using implicit fact table, Always select measure( Which has some aggregation) as a implicit fact column. So that will allows the query will eliminate duplicate rows by doing a group by operation.
Other note is make sure performance is good. When we don't have a good model for fact tables, when the tables contains large set of data, make sure performance is good by doing indexes or caching to load the prompts.

  • Samsung Intensity III – what do I think about this phone

There is nothing good in the basic phones. If I don’t like touch screen and I have passed the flip phone era, then there are in fact only two (2) phones offered by the Verizon: LG Cosmos 2 and Samsung Intensity III.
Are these phones any good? I don’t think so. The quality of these phones is not even close to the quality of basic phones that we had in the past.
I am the owner of Samsung Intensity III. I “upgraded” my old Samsung Sway (4 years without any problems) to Samsung Intensity III, and I was experiencing any kind of issues – issues, which I never had with my four (4) previous phones (diff models). The time that I spent with VZW tech support and the store employees in three weeks was much greater than the time spent during the last 10 years. Yah!
Since this is the third Samsung Intensity III in three weeks, I think that I could give honest opinion based on facts.
I had to replace the phone twice for different reasons.
With the first phone, I was experiencing very poor signal, drop calls and terrible sound.
With the second phone, after first night in standby mode, the battery was almost discharged. The battery and the charger have been replaced. On the same day, I spent hours with VZW tech support to fix cracking voice and windy noise in the background. At the end I was told that it might be a problem with the phone and I should go to the store and replace the phone.
The phone was replaced. The cracking voice and windy noise is gone but I still have a weak signal and I hear from the callers that sometimes my voice sound like I was distant from the phone.
    I had no problem with:
    1. Setting the alarm
    2. Setting the bluetooth
    3. Transferring the pictures and contacts from the phone to my PC
This phone is very poorly designed with the following issues:
    1. The keys (on the front panel) are so small that is very difficult to touch one key without touching another.
    2. The orange color of the symbols on the keyboard made the symbols hard to read.
    3. VERY small pictures. According to the phone specification: “Display 2.4 inches”. I wonder how it was measured, when the actual width is less than 2" and height approx 2”. But to see the picture in this size, you must set the picture as wallpaper. Otherwise the size of the picture, in the ‘full view’ is only 1 1/2” x 11/8”.
    4. The back cover is made so cheap that I am afraid that I can break after a few openings.
    5. Poor signal (in comparison to my 4 previous phones that I used in the same location)
Why ALL the basic phone models must be slim? I don’t might to have a phone 1” wider.
There is no variety of choices on the design front. I think that most of the basic phone users could prefer to have a phone in the size of the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, just to have a bigger numbers and a bigger screen size.
So far, it look like the Samsung Intensity III could be the worst cell phone I have owned.
I just don’t understand the phone manufacturers. Why do they cease production of a good quality phone, only to replace by piece of crap?

    Junk.
I picked up an Intensity III a couple weeks ago to replace a perfectly good LG Venus that Verizon doesn't want to support any longer. The Samsung appeared to successfully pair with all the Bluetooth devices I tried (3 different headsets (two from LG and one from Samsung) and one vehicle (2011 Hyundai Sonata)), but would not successfully connect with any of them. Samsung's technical support people said I should refer the problem to the Bluetooth device manufacturers, because it wasn't Samsung's responsibility to make their device work with any particular other device. I thought there were "standards" for things such as Bluetooth, to try and insure these types of problems don't happen. I thought it was likely there was something wrong with the particular handset I had and Verizon's technical support people tended to agree with me. But I didn't like Samsung's "blame someone else" attitude and so I exchanged the Intensity III for a somewhat identical feature-wise LG Cosmos 2 last week. So far, except for hanging each night when Backup Assistant runs, the Cosmos 2 is working well and according to those I've talked to and asked, sounding better.

  • Thinking about the upgrade

Hey all, I'm considering upgrading from 10.4.10 to Leoperd. In fact I'm really liking the box set. My question is how has the "Snow Leoperd" thing been working out I have a Macbook Pro (previous version) with 4GB ram. I also work with Final Cut Express and Logic Express 7. As well Microsoft office for mac. Anyone have any thoughts. Should I wait a bit for "Snow" to improve or upgrade later..... I'm clueless

    I'm clueless
So are we. Snow Leopard has been announced as the next version, a few of its features have been discussed in the open, we know a select group of people have received beta versions, and that is about it. None of us know how it will run on the computers we own and we don't know when it will come out. There have been some rumors about March but if Apple product rumors were reliable we'd have new iMacs right now, a nano iPhone, etc etc etc.
If the box set offers you something you really want/need then go for it. If not, wait. My own personal opinion is that Leopard is worth the upgrade and I was relieved when we finally upgraded from Tiger at work. But that is just one man's opinion. My wife moves between Panther at work and Leopard at home and doesn't see what the big deal is about. (She also thinks that Word 2004 is the ultimate but that's her only personality flaw. <grin>)

  • Firewire is dead.  But what do you think about this idea?

I know that the firewire port is saudered onto the logic board on my computer and I use to use it all the time but I was connecting my 12" powerbook to a powermac G4 through target disk mode and I accidently plugged in the firewire end in the powermac upside down. I had the other end alreay plugged into my powerbook and since then I got my firewire port has been unresponsive. I also got the ozone smell of death which made me wonder if the smell is the computer chip that controls the throughput of the firewire port or the actual firewire port itself? Because I use to use firewire a lot and so I am very sad to see something that I did, kill the port.
I had 2 hard drives and dv camcorder and my ipod and of course a firewire hub so I could plug it all in simultaneously. So what I am willing to do is take apart the computer and try to sauder on a new firewire port but now we are back to my original question, is it the port or computer chip. One thing I do know is that my ipod will still get charged even when its directly connected to the computer but nothing will mount.
If anybody has an input on my dilemma please feel free to add to this.
    Thank you, Kenny

    Hi!
I had coffe all over my 12" powerbook and was forced to resolder much of it to get back my ethernet, firewire and usb. Here is what you'll need to care about when you decide to open the machine:
The keyboard assembly is held by 4 screws, 2 of whose are hidden under function keys F1/F2 and F11/F12. Remove caps by gently lifting up their LEFT side.
Heatpipe assembly must be removed too. I managed overtighten one of screws, and part of it which is soldered to the mainboard got loose. Don't do that.
Almost everything else must be removed, which involves many different screw lengths. Keeping track of them somehow helps later when you put everything together.
Don't start the machine with any components (such as hard drive or screen) disconnected. Hardware identification takes ages to perform and will confuse you, because machine appears to be dead most of the time.
Soldering: Use antistatic iron, lead-free tip and solder. Residue-free flux-pen helps a lot. Almost everything you'll find onboard is SMD, which means that removing components with improper tools or using force will damage the board.
Using camera to document how components were placed before you remove them gets handy later.
    Good luck!

  • What do you think about the upgrade.

    Ok,
I paid extra $10 after buying the 32G Touch for $600...and well... the 2.0 upgrade is a disapointment for me....the best thing is the calculator...all the rest is like playing Atari back on 80's. Oh of course...unless you pay extra and extra for new apps...that probably is like playing Atary back on 90's..so the $10 is just to have the privilege of having a new calculator....

I must confess I had a similar reaction. I was hoping for significant improvements in the core apps, like Mail and Safari, but none were forthcoming. The Mail app is rudimentary at best, and Safari's inability to run Flash is inexcusable.
I was happy to get the free radio apps, but you can't do anything else while you're listening to them. It would be nice to be able to browse the web while listening to online radio, but once you leave the app window the radio stops playing.
Essentially, we've all paid $10 for the privilege of being able to buy more stuff from the iTunes store. It should have been a free upgrade. Kudos to Apple for once again sticking it to their customers so artfully.
