Thinking about upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB

I am thinking about upgrading my powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB, or even larger if possible...
I have checked the macsales.com website and found this seagate 160GB, is it a good choice? Can anyone suggest a better deal or a better choice...?
but I also notice one thing... it says that any powerbook model prior to 2003 might not support the any hard disk over 120G....
So I am wondering is my powerbook G4 15inch 1.25GHz SuperDrive model able to have a 160GB hard drive...?
Thanks a lot!!!!!

The 1.25Ghz Powerbook came out in fall 2003, so if what MacSales says is true, then it should work.

i have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt to

This is my "About This Mac" ... it shows I have Intel i7 CPU.  If you are running SL, you at least have Intel, but would need at least Core2Duo an 2 GB (most people suggest 4 GB) RAM.
If you want to run Lion, remember that the discussions in this forum from last summer when Lion first came out (and since) were highly charged at times.  Certain features that vanished or were added caused great heartache for some.  Others love Lion, though.  And some live with the changes waiting for any fixes they would desire.
Any PPC (PowerPC) applications you depend upon will not work under Lion.  Use this page to see what applications will not run:  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    AND
Recall that you can clone your SL to an external disk to keep it safe.  Then you can "experiment with" the new OSX (Lion or ML) until you know it works for you while still having your old SL safe in case you need it.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading To A New Hard Disk Migrating Data

Like many old MacBook users right about now, we're all thinking about upgrading our 60 or 80 GB OEM hard drives. Well, I went and did it and I have a few questions after-the-fact, not to mention documenting my experience.
First I chose the Seagate Momentus 160GB 7200.2 (ST9160823ASG). This replaces the OEM Seagate Momentus 80GB 5400.2 (ST98823AS). The reason for this is simple ... the OEM drive worked flawlessly and I was willing to spend a little extra to ensure continued performance. I also chose to bundle it with a CMS USB 2.0 external enclosure data transfer kit to re-use my old drive.
My first surprise was that the CMS auto-transfer software was Windows only, despite the fact they make a Macintosh back-up product. The second surprise was that there was no Apple auto-transfer options. I literally spent an hour searching the Apple website and built-in help and tutorials to find a way to do this. Thanks to all on this discussion website as I ended up choosing a third party "clone" software to copy my old drive.
Which brings me to my first question. Every-time I tried to use Disk Utility to make a disk image of my old disk, I got the response that the disk image failed because resources were in use. Is that normal? Is there a way to make a back-up disk image using included Apple disk utilities? If not, then Apple NEEDS to spell it out, rather than a one line blurb in the disk install manual they publish that says basically: first back up your data. Thanks Apple, big help.
So I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner, for a variety of reasons. A. it's $5 shareware and B. it specifically got better reviews than SuperDuper ($27). As far as I can tell, Carbon Copy Cloner did an exceptional job of perfectly backing up my old HD. BUT ...
Now here comes the next question ... the CMS enclosure seemed fine, but between CarbonCopyCloner and the USB 2.0 interface, it took over 9 hours to make a disk image of my old hard drive!!! Is THAT normal? Would a Firewire interface have sped this process up? Is SuperDuper faster? I must admit when I then used Disk Utility to restore the disk to the new drive, it took another 6 hours, so my guess is it wasn't the software's fault. Maybe it just takes a **** of a long time to move 80GB data. If the USB 2.0 interface is the bottleneck, then I highly recommend paying extra for a firewire enclosure. Would love to get a definitive answer here.
The process of installing the drive was simple. Thank you Apple (seriously). The new drive booted right up and the system is as zippy as ever ... but you knew it was coming:
The new 7200 rpm drive ran smoothly and absolutely silently in the external enclosure when I was backing up the old HD. Once installed, I immediately noticed a new vibration. Nothing huge, but it's there when now it wasn't on the OEM drive. The whole MacBook vibrates, stem to stern. The drive also seems hotter under my palm. Seeing all manor of these "VIBRATION" issues on other posts, I would suggest that anyone upgrading to a new drive, install the HD first to ***** the level of vibration before going to the lengthy duplicating process. It also seems to spin constantly, which the 5400 may well have done too but was otherwise unnoticeable.
My question here is, since these drives are virtually identical, does the 7200 rpm cause the added vibration & heat not present on the 5400, or could I have less-than-optimal drive which might be improved with a different drive? Also, the last time I had a high vibration drive on my PowerBook G3 it continued to get worse over the course of a year and Apple finally replaced it under Apple Care.
All-in-all it was a simple and relatively straightforward process once I found all the pieces, that is and Apple did not make it easy. I chewed up a lot of time I did not have looking for instructions. I've been using Macs since the original Macintosh in 1984. Ah I long for the days when I could just open a disk, insert another, select all and drag the contents to a new disk and voila! An exact copy of the original. Apple finally gets an A+ for RAM & Drive upgrade accessibility. But they get an F for making the data migration process as complicated as possible, particularly for something as important as our data. I'm sure their strategy is for everyone to take their computers to the Apple Store for upgrades and anyone else should already know how to do it. Well, I would suggest that most of us fall somewhere in the middle. We can put the new drive in and backup our data, but like making a good cake, we need the recipe.

Doug, I appreciate your input, however re-installing OSX is exactly what I DON'T want to do. Not only would it take an extended amount of time to update from 10.4.6 to 10.4.10 but importing files from the old hard disk comes nowhere near copying over every modification I've made to my system. The idea here, as I would think with anyone upgrading their hard drive with a perfectly working system, is to increase disk space and just keep right on going without missing a step. WIth all due respect your suggestion is absolutely the wrong advice in this situation. The last time I took such advice, I found myself missing many of the system helper applications allowing me to access hardware and software and all of it had to be reinstalled as I discovered things were no longer working as they should have. I DO NOT recommend re-installing OS X to anyone wishing to upgrade their drive, unless you are having problems with your system or just want to clean house. Apple should understand this. The bug thing on the install disk is just one of the many headaches involved in this process. My understanding was that I cannot make a disk image from the install disk was well as being unable to restore. However, if that's possible, then I could have done what I wanted without using a third party "shareware" solution. I will check it out and report back. Call me paranoid, but I would prefer to keep my data backup in the hands of those who formatted it originally, i.e. Apple. I would happily use a proven commercial utility, but for something as routine as upgrading my hard disk, I shouldn't have to pay to do it. Time was, if Apple had a bug in their startup utility disk, they would have corrected the error and sent a replacement to all registered users. Time was.

  • Upgrading 12" Powerbook G4 hard drive & OS X 10.5--please help?

So, I’ve decided I want to venture into upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard drive, RAM, and OS. Currently I have:
    512 RAM
    1.5 Ghz
    80 GB 5400 HD
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
What I would like to upgrade to:
    1.25GB RAM (max)
    1.5 Ghz
    160-320GB 5400 (7200 if possible) HD
    Mac OS X 10.5
Now here comes my questions. The RAM upgrade is straightforward. The HD upgrade seems simple enough when using tutorials on ifixit.com. I am wondering though, does the HD need to be ATA-100 or could it be ATA-133? Are DMA, Ultra DMA, UDMA, DMA-100, ATA, ATA-100, IDE, and EIDE all the same thing and all compatible with the 12" powerbook G4?
Assuming the hard drive speed is 5400 and I have RAM maxed out, are there performance differences between say a 160GB 5400 HD and a 320GB 5400 HD? Would it be better just to get the biggest HD that is compatible with my PB?
Also, FRYS.COM has "retail hard drive kits" and "bare HDs" What’s the difference between the two?
    Finally:
Once I figure out which HD I want, I will have new: Hard Drive, RAM, and a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD Purchased from an Apple Store. I will install the RAM. Now I will be left with a HD and OSX 10.5 DVD...how do I get the new OS on the new HD?

The hard drive needs to be a parallel ATA 2.5" notebook hard drive. ATA-100 or ATA-133 or the others you listed don't matter. You cannot use a serial ATA or SATA hard drive, that's important. Here are two online stores and their parallel ATA drives available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035907 889&name=ATA-6 and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on 2.5" ATA laptop drives).
You'll note there aren't any 7200rpm drives listed, as they aren't made anymore for the parallel ATA interface. Choose whatever size works for you, and if increasing the size, make sure you have capacity to backup the new, larger hard drive, as you fill it up.
You only need the bare hard drive. There can be a difference between a retail boxed version versus OEM, as the warranty can be different, but that's about it.
After you install the hard drive, you insert the first OS X disk in the system, boot holding the C key down (so the system boots from the disk), choose Disk Utility from the menu bar, and partition the drive. Once done, you can do the OS X installation. If you don't hold the C key down and the system wants to install OS X, after you tell it what language you want, as soon as a menu bar appears, then you can run Disk Utility.

  • Thinking about upgrades to new quantum but..still have eSata

    Hi.
I'm thinking about upgrading to the new quantum boxes but I curently have about 20 shows on an external eSata that I just setup earlier this year.   I know theres no good way to pull off the shows but was wondering if theres any way to stop recording on the external and dwindle the shows off.
    any thougths are appreciated.
    Thx
    shaun

My fisrt thought is to say to disconnect the esata drive unless you watch something.
But then items will be recorded to the local drive that won't transfer either.
So you either have to watch it all, or lose something when you migrate over.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Upgrade & Partition TC internal hard disk - info howto

The Time Capsule comes with the disk formatted to a single data partition.. there is no way to change this via tools in the computer or airport utility. Whatever tool is internal on the TC is not accessible.. if you use erase it will reformat the drive and recreate the original partition. 2 of which are hidden.
There are three partitions in the actual drive.. only one of which you can see.
    APconfig
    APswap
data (or whatever name is used.. which can be changed via the airport utility).
You can create a disk image on the internal drive as a method of partitioning it.. not really the same thing.. but for most it works.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html for the method.
If you want to alter a TC actual hard disk, you need to remove it from the TC.. this will of course void the warranty. So before jumping, think about it.
I was asked to install a 3TB drive on a Gen 2 A1302 TC which I undertook with some trepidation as most of my reading of forums suggested hard disk above 2TB were impossible. It may not have worked with older firmware but on 7.6.1 it works just fine.. with this proviso.. the spin down may not work. The TC worked fine with a new 3TB WD green drive. I discovered the one used in the Gen 4 latest model is older WD drive.
    WD30EZRS These are Sata1
The ones you buy now are WD30EZRX which are sata2 drives.. Swapping them around caused no problems on the Gen 4.. did not try on the Gen2.
You don't want to know how I found this out.
Since you are upgrading a drive and have it out.. how nice to actually partition it. This was tricky and I actually found very little info about it.. if any of you know where there is a howto I am glad to reference it.
I have previously installed new disks with no trouble.. but without the hidden partitions created I think it uses RAM for those files.. and it will toss up disk errors.
So you need to actually create all the partitions. This isn't hard. Although again ran into trouble with the USB to sata box I was using not being able to read 3TB drives.. so I was forced to directly connect to sata.. this may be difficult for most of you... Make sure you have the equipment to do the work before ordering 3TB drive.. My USB box can do 2TB.. but it recognises the 3TB as 800MB or GB.
Using disk utility change to 4 partitions.. (or whatever number you want.. 5 or 6 I guess are ok) There are two paritions for internal use.. I created APconfig and APswap .. set the size to .01GB or whatever.. you must type this in directly.. and it will change it to the min possible size partition.. 1.07GB on the 3TB.
This is a waste as the actual files used are tiny.. but.. you have lots of space.. you need to lose some to gain a lot more.. so be it.
    Name your data partitions something suitable.. TCpart1 TCpart2 TCpart3 or data1 data2 data3
Make sure you format them using HFS+ and GUID type.
The TC still kicks up an error about the disk.. this is probably a nasty side effect of Disk Utility creating an EFI partition which is invisible..
So I am going to need to try again via the Command Line disk utility.. So I can create the partitions without using an EFI.
So expect further installment.. Anyone with Command Line instructions I would be glad of the help.

    solved by posting elsewhere....

  • Installing Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade in a new hard disk

I have an U330 and I have received Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade disc. My pre-installed OS is Windows Vista.
I bought a new 500 Gb hard disk and I want to change my U330's hd for this new one AND also want to install Windows 7 in this new hard disk.
Question: is is possible to install windows 7 using Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs directly in this new hard disk?
Or do I need first to change the hard disk (and restore backup or restore factory default) and then upgrade to Windows 7?
    Thanks in advance

I dont think it is possible, the upgrade disk will check for a eligible version of Windows vista before starting the installtion
    Cheers and regards,

  • I am thinking about upgrading my HTC Incredible to a Galaxy SIII

I love my HTC camera, but constantly losing my 3g capability.  Think its just getting old.  I'm due for an upgrade.  Is the camera any good on this model?  I I saw a thread about poor signal strength.  I live in hills and use my cell for everything.  IS the signal really that poor?

The camera is one of the best I have seen. As for 3G, A lot of them tend to have weeker/more unstable signal's VS most verizon phones. Mine is mostly fine, but there are users who say it's a big issue. So just test before you buy and if you have issues. Take it back, becuase most likely it's not going to fix itself.
As for 3G signal in your area, I don't know if it's really that poor or not, but it may be a good idea to check. Becuase there are some places like WV were it's next to none out there. So just think about that as well.

I was thinking of upgrading my macbook’s os to Leopard (not snow leopard) but I have a macbook intel os x 10.5 version so would my systembe eligible to upgrade? The reason for not going for Snow Leopard is because I have heard bad things about it (bugs, browser crashes, slower processing, etc.)

If you have OS 10.5 that is already Leopard.
If you mean you have a 10.5 disc it needs to be a retail copy and not a grey disc which are machine specific.
Where did you here bad things about Snow Leopard. I think that any problems are usually due to running it without enough RAM.

  • Thinking about upgrading my T61P

My T61p is not booting and I am thinking about using this as a reason to:
    1. Moving to Windows 7 from Windows XP
    2. Increasing the RAM to as much as my system allows
    3. Installing a larger hard drive.
My question is how much RAM and what kind is compatible with my system.
The current hard drive is a SATA.  What hard drives can I use?

If you will be using 32-bit windows 7, you won't be able to address more than 3GB, no matter how much you install.   If you are using 64-bit, you can use 8GB.   You need DDR-2 RAM that is PC2-5300 or faster. Faster RAM (PC2-5400, PC2-6300, etc) will run at PC2-5300 speed. Some people prefer certain brands. I use whatever is cheapest. You can use any SATA 2.5" drive that is 9.5mm thick.  Again, some people prefer certain brands.  I prefer Western Digital, Fujitsu or Hitachi.

  • Disk Warrior 3.0.3 upgrade possible on a hard disk copy?

    Hi, Folks,
A question for people who have upgraded their Disk Warrior using the downloadable 3.0.3 updater.
I have a Disk Warrior upgrade problem. My original CD (which is upgradeable) has scratches and will not read during the process (which, as you know, makes a disk image of the original disk, runs the updater on the disk image, then burns the disk image to a new CD). So the process stops.
What I'd like to do is upgrade the hard disk installed DW application.
I have checked the Alsoft Web site, but have not contacted their tech support, and googled and checked other Mac forums, with no mention of this -- except Alsoft saying that if you want your HD copy upgraded, do the new CD first and copy the upgraded DW to your HD.
    Bummer.
    TIA,
    M<

Well, contact Allsoft and explain your issue. perhaps you can get the update by verifying your serial number.

  • Upgrading the 60 GB Hard Disk

Now that Apple is offering up to 200 GB hard disks in the MacBook, I wonder if I can upgrade my 60 GB MacBook drive. Previously I was told (Apple Store) that 60 GB was the largest hard drive I could use in my MacBook.

would you say that it is better to buy a 200 or 250GB HDD by my self und keep the original 120GB as a external instead of upgarde from 120 to 200GB for approx. 130 Euro if I buy the MacBook ??
I would buy the 250 GB because it is a 5400 RPM drive. The 200 GB Apple offers is 4200 RPM. I would not upgrade at apple. I would buy the stock MacBook and then later you can upgrade the drive and the RAM yourself.
These are very good instructions on How to Upgrade Your MacBook's Hard Drive. The apple instruction linked to by Kappy are good but they left out the Torx # 8 needed that Michael mentions.
