Thinking of an MSI Mobo

Hi,
I am considering an MSI mobo to replace the current one in my PC die to a few stability issues that have been narrowed down to a faulty board.  My current system is:
OS   Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
CPU   AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
Motherboard   Asus M4A87TD/USB3
Memory   Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Memory Kit CL9 1.65V
Graphics Card   PowerColor HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
Monitor(s) Displays   LG
Keyboard   Microsoft Wireless 3000 V2.0
Mouse   Microsoft Wireless 5000
PSU   Antec TruePower New 750W Modular PSU
Case   Antec 300
Hard Drives   OCZ Vertex 3 SATA 3 SSD (OS and software) + Seagate ST3500418ASATA 500Gb (user profiles etc)
The 2 boards I am considering are MSI 990XA-GD55  or MSI MSI 990FXA-GD65.  I appreciate the cost difference, but what would be best?
I use the USB 3 ports and while I don't currently use the PC for gaming, it was spec'd to allow me to use one of the motor racing games as a track learning tool.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am just wanting reliability and multi tasking performance. I had considered going down the Intel route but can't really justify the additional cost of a CPU when the one I have is more than adequate.
Thanks
Steve

I use the MSI 990FXA-GD65 myself, and it is a great board, gets my recommendation!

  • MSI mobo case badge

Just curious if anybody has ever received a case badge for an MSI mobo.  I think some of the MSI video cards included MSI stickers in the past.  Also, does anyone know if there's a way to request a sticker from MSI?
Last weekend I caved in and stuck all the various case badges I had onto the inside of my P180B front door.  I didn't want the stickers to ruin the exterior style, but this way I can shut the door to hide em away.  Sadly, my 975X didn't come with an MSI sticker though it's one of my favorite things in the build  :D  Oh well... tia for any suggestions.

Maybe we could get permission from MSI to use their logo.

  • MSI mobos and ATI graphics card incompability!

I don´t know how well known this problem is but I´ve seen it on this forum and when googling the internet you can find it!
The issue is that I can´t get my HD5450(Sapphire) to work on my MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2) mobo! The screen stays blank but the PC boots up and loads Windows.
The HD5450 works fine on other mobos with different PSU´s ranging from 350 - 600 watts, but when trying different PSU´s on the 945GCM5-F V2 it doesn´t seem to help. I´ve also tried different bios settings, I´ve cleared CMOS, I´ve tried both dvi and vga outputs, I´ve disconnected as much as possible from the mobo except from the graphics card and the PSU, but nothing seems to help!
    Any ideas , someone?
    Tekrar!

    Thanks for all replies!
I had this question on the AMD forum (AMD Game » AMD Technology » Radeon Graphics » MSI mobos and ATI graphics card incompability!) and here are some of the replies:
"Well, its a known issue that older chipsets, like even AMD 580X chipset, doesn't work with 5k/6k series cards without a bios update from the manufacturer of the board.
If its not working / posting / no video ect... You need to bug MSI to update the bios on the board to support the newer 5k/6k video cards. It may or may not happen. Several manufacturers have like Asus, and Gigabyte."
"Same problem. 5450, MSI MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2). Done the same plus updated msi mainboard bios using msi live update 5 etc. Waiting for reply from makers of graphics card and mainboard.
I should add from what I've read in other threads and forums it seems to be an old mainboard problem not just related to the MSI 945GCM5-F V2. Some other manufacturers of mainboards have sent customers bios upgrades to get their cards working.
As for your pci express version question. Well these problems seem to emerge when people have plugged these pci express version 2.1 cards into their pci express 1st generation slots. What exactly the problem is here? Leave that for manufacturers/experts to answer."
"Tek , its hit or miss on the board + chipset combination on if the card will work or not. Sometimes they will work in old boards, Sometimes they will not w/o manufacturerer support.
Its completely random from what I've seen on the forums at the times they were released , when people with old boards were asking why it wasn't working. And what they did to solve it. Most all of them emailed the manufacturer. Some of those said manufactureres provided beta bios back to the customers, some said your out of luck."
Its true, this MSI MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2) isn´t a new mobo, but when I get the 5450 to work without problem with an even older fujitsu mobo (last bios update long time ago) and a 350 watts PSU I think something´s wrong.
So, a bios upgrade would probably fix it if the manufacturer (in this case MSI) just wanted to!
    Tekrar!

  • Problem with 6700 6.1 in counter strike source with msi mobo

    hi,
i've just baught a 6700 6.1 set and they work fine in windows, dvds and the msi speaker set up test. but in counter strike sources speaker test and in game only the centre and sub work. i've changed the speaker settings in windows and source with no luck.
my msi mobo (k8n neo2) has 7.1 built in but only offers 2channel 4channel 5.1 or 7.1 options so i am using my speakers in 5.1 when i run the speaker set up test provided with my mobo the right speaker is highlighted and then plays a sound but in the source speeker test only the centre and sub actually make a sound when they are iluminated i have tryed all combinations off the msi set up and source set up and the problem does not change.
i was wondering what i could do or if this problem has been heard of before.
if i have missed any information out that u need 2 know just ask and il let u know
    thanks a lot

If I dun remember wrongly, there's a switch at the woofer. Try changing that to direct mode.

  • MSI mobo?

Ok I got a compaq (changed every part except the mobo and cpu  )
But on the mobo it say "Micro-Star MS-6541" isnt that a MSI mobo then??
And could I use a MSI bios on that?

MSI make boards for companies like Compaq referred to as OEM (original equipment manufacturer) boards. The companies that buy them may add additional components and they supply their own bios. You should go to the Compaq site and find a bios, or as Blazer said you will probably end up dealing with

  • 865PE MSI MOBO's and Pentium 5 (socket 478)

    hi,
I have only one question and i dont know if someone can answer it, because is about something that is the near future.
Does the MSI 865PE line of mobos will support the upcoming Pentium 5 in socket 478???
Because i was thinking in making a Pentium based PC that hopefully should last at least a year.
Well, any answer will be appreciated.
    Bye
PS: sorry for my english. :P

Read the thread:  Important: NEO boards Unofficial FAQ rev 8/16/2003 RAID-1 and BIOS updates
This "unofficial FAQ" has a few statements that cover the PRESCOTT support for Neo series boards.
Unfortunately, it seems Intel hasn't set the Socket-478 version's final specs on stone and there is great concern on the power dissipation (20-25% more than P4 Northwood) - so things could change for the worst - regardless of the brand of motherboard you choose (Even Gigabyte and Asus withdrew their Prescott statements on current S-478 boards).
Get the best you can afford now and it should last you a couple of years at least.

  • MSI mobo not detecting HDD

    Please help,
My newly installed MSI 6383 Socket 370 Mobo is not detecting HDD.  Actually, it detects it but is not booting to WinXP.  It hangs up while verifying VMI data pool?
    Any Suggestions.
I had to replace mobo due to lightning strike which zapped psu and mobo, i think.
    Thanks

Yes it was in zapped pc.  We have an identical HP in another office so i I took this drive out and put it in identical one and it works fine.  It is jumpered as the master and connected that way.    Seems like it is a compatability problem between motherboard and HDD, but I don't know.  Both the floppy and the cdrw work fine.  Thanks for the help.

It should.  I have one 512 MB stick of ECC on this KT3 Ultra board, and two of them on another (non-windoze) and both work flawlessly.  The board will not use ECC functionality however.

  • Different Factories for MSI mobos, Could it be the problem???

    Hi, just an idea...
Could it be that all of a line of production of MSI 875P NEO Fis2r, LSR got damaged and all the line of boards (coming from that factory, coming from that country) are arriving to our hands??? ?(  ?(  ?(
Could it be that there are good and bad boards deppending of where they were made??? ?(  ?(  ?(  ?(  ?(  ?(

how many factories has MSI over the world, does anyone knows??? ?(  ?(  ?(  ?(  ?(

It would be nice to know where were made mobos that do not fail when flashing the bios....it could lead to an interesting discovery... 8o  8o

  • My New MSI Mobo Will Not Speak Up!

I just replaced the motherboard in my computer with a new MSI P4M900M2-L motherboard (VIA Chipset). I did a "repair" install of Windows, re-activated it, and everything in the system is now working fine except...the integrated sound function on the mobo does not work. I've downloaded and successfully installed all recommended drivers from MSI website using "Live Update Online" feature. Also downloaded and ran MSI InfoView XP utility. All looks good on this utility except the SOUND tab which says "Sound Card Not Detected!". The Windows Device Manager shows an "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" but its properties sheet says "No Drivers are installed for this device". If you click on the "Update Driver..." button on the Properties "Driver" tab, nothing at all happens. All the Driver info on this tab shows either "Not Available" or "Unknown".
I connected the motherboard on a non-conducting surface outside the case. Same result; MSI InfoView utility reports "Sound Card Not Detected". I have also verified that the MB mounting holes line up correctly with the case mounting standoffs - no shorts.
On advice from MSI support, I RMA returned the board to the vendor and they sent me a new one - same model, P4M900M2. I installed the new one and...same problem! Everything else works perfectly. I went through the process again of updating drivers using MSI's Live Update Online. It scanned my system and said all drivers were up-to-date. I loaded the CD-ROM that came with the mobo and clicked on the RealTek Driver button, but nothing at all happened. I browsed the CD and in the "Sound" folder found two setups - one for VIA HD and one for RealTek. Tried running the RealTek setup; it went partway through and then said "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure!!". (Thanks for all the useful info!) Then tried the VIA HD setup. It ran a bit & then said "ERROR - We can't find HD audio device". So nothing worked.
It seems quite unlikely that I received two defective motherboards in a row, each with the exact same defect !!?? Seems like there must be some driver or setting or jumper or something that's preventing the sound function from being recognized. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Joy! My problem is solved. I received the following from MSI Technical Support (it took them two tries, unfortunately; first they concluded that the motherboard was bad and told me to RMA it, which I did; only to have exact same problem with 2nd board.) Anyway, this solution worked like a charm. The key, apparently, is deleting that Microsoft UAA HD Audio driver under System Devices.
Hope this info may help some other poor soul out there fighting the same problem.
Thanks to Bosskiller and Del UK for all the suggestions.
    Here's what tech support sent:
Be sure the Microsoft HD UAA patch has been applied: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111/en-us ** The Microsoft HD UAA device drivers interfere with the Realtek drivers and prevent them from loading. The cure is to 1) Open the control panel and launch System 2) Click on the Hardware tab and then launch the Device manager. 3) Go to the bottom and click on System Devices 4) Look for Microsoft UAA HD Audio driver. 5) Right mouse click on it and first disable the driver, and then unload it. 6) Reboot the machine. 7) There should be no problem now with loading the HD audio drivers. Please check and be sure the bios setup has the on board audio setting been set to enable or Auto. Please have all on board audio header removed from any case front audio or other adapter connections and only connect the speaker/headset to the rear audio output port (green) and retest. Please test out the mb and components outside the case with mb box to support the board. This can prevent any short or grounding problem to the mb which can cause audio to stop working as well.

  • Disk on MSI mobo RAID controller to another MSI mobo

    Hello,
I'm running two drives in a non-raid setup but they are connected to the RAID controller on the K7N-Delta ILSR motherboard. What I was wondering is wheter I can reconnect these drives directly on the regular controllers without hitches. And can I expect these disks to work properly if i buy a new motherboard and connect them to the RAID controller on the new motherboard which has possibly a diffrent raid controller integrated.

Hello! If the RAID controller is different you might have a problem with a new mobo.
Is there anything obstructing you from saving the data somewhere else, when fixing the setup that you want? 'Thinking it could be a work-around to store selfcreated, important data and stuff on a regular cheapo IDE disk for a while. Updates and programs is not too hard to find, so there is no absolute need to copy and store those.

  • MSI Mobo + Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro Problem

    Hello,
I'm having unexpected reboots or crashes while playing games. This does not come from my onboard sound card because it tried another (not integrated) sound card and the problem was still here... (not an IRQ problem)
Crashes can occur 5-20 minutes after starting to play, sometimes followed by a Windows error message explaining that the VPU has reset the graphics accelerator card because it was not responding to driver commands.......
I have the lastest MSI Drivers and Bios (MSI Live Monitor), I have the lastest DirectX, tried ATI and Hercules latest drivers, tried different AGP apperture sizes and many other BIOS tweaks but nothing made a difference....
Maybe this can be due to my DDR, since I'm using 2 different (brand) 512 Mb 333/PC2700 sticks (haven't tried MemTest 3.0 yet)
    System is:
    Windows XP SP1
400W Ever-Power PSU (tried with a 350W Enermax PSU and didnt change anything)
    2,4 Ghz 533 FSB Pentium 4
    1 Gb DDR333/2700
    MSI 655 Max L Motherboard
    Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro
    onboard LAN adapter
    Sound Blaster 128 PCI soundcard
    Thx in advance

The best way to get good airflow, remove your side case panel and get a good old fan to blow the hell out of it and test to confirm if it's heat concern .
Maybe thats because u didn't try the 9800PRO cards...

  • Recently Purchased MSI MOBO

Hey everyone, I am a newbie to these forums, just want to thank everyone beforehand for their responses.  So, i recently bought a core i7 930 bundled with a MSi X58 Pro-E.  Now, i am still in the process of buying the rest of the components for my PC. I've been hearing a lot about the MSi x58 mobo's having problems with heat.  What i'm wondering, is should i expect to run into this problem when i assemble the computer?  And if so, what components should i buy to solve the heat problem.  I am asking this now, because i don't want to make another separate purchase after my computer is built.  I've read about spot fans people are using, but i don't have any expertise in this area.  I'm already ordering some Arctic Silver 5, but i don't know if that is a suitable thermal grease for the mobo.  If there are things that i should get to mitigate this issue, I'm going to buy it with the rest of my build. Thanks for taking time in reading my post.
