Thinking of buying an AEBSn - Need to use it as a Bridge for Netgear - Pos?

Hey,
I just moved into a new apartment where my landlord is providing free wireless access (yes, it's included in rent... so i wont be stealing it). What I want to do is purchase a new AEBSn to extend the network so that I can hook up my XBOX 360, External HDD (Time Machine), and Printer to the AEBSn. The main router upstairs which is providing the wireless is a Netgear WGT624 v3. What I want to do is grab that wireless signal with the AEBSn and redistribute it as a wired connection and wirelessly to take advantage of the features it provides when used with my macs (Time Machine, Easy Wireless Printing, File Sharing, etc).
Essentially what I am wondering is if it is possible to set up the Airport as a client of the Netgear.
*I would set it up as the main router, but that would mean giving my shiny Jonny Ive epitome of industrially designed wireless perfection to the common folk upstairs and then running an ugly Netgear down here... which just wouldnt be right.

You cannot set up an Airport base station as a remote base station to a Netgear WGT624. Doing this requires you to set up a wireless distribution system (WDS), and Netgear's wireless router does not support Apple's WDS system. And no, it wouldn't work the other way around either (Airport Base Station as the main, Netgear WGT624 as the remote).
What you can do:
1. the XBox could be connected to an ethernet-to-wireless adapter. All the major companies selling WiFi products to consumers sell such a device.
2. the printer could be connected to an Apple Airport Express, which in turn could be configured as a wireless client to that Netgear wireless router. Note that anyone connecting to that Netgear wireless router would also have access to the printer
3. Time Capsule would need to be standalone, on its own wireless network. You'd be better off just buying an external hard drive to cable directly to your Mac for doing backups.

  • Need Help using WRT54GL as Wireless Bridge for Xbox

    Hi.
I need help configuring my WRT54GL as a wireless bridge for my xbox.
I have a Billion BiPAC 7404VGO currently in service as my main router/modem. i.e. I have my ADSL connection and PC connected to this. I also connect to this with a laptop.
I have an original xbox at the other end of the house (cat5 NOT an option).
Basically I want to connect my xbox to the rest of network. I have a WRT54GL I can use for this. I just dont know how to set it up.
The WRT54GL has Firmware Version: v4.30.7 (out of the box).
My Wireless network is using WPA.
I have a VPN setup through to work via the Billion.
The idea is to stream media from my PC to the xbox (media centre).
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

A wireless router is a device which requires its own wired internet connection. A wireless router is not a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs. A wireless router does not connect wireless to other wireless routers/APs with standard Linksys firmware. With Linksys firmware you need a WAP54G or similar. The WAPs support wireless bridging and repeater mode.
If you already have a WRT54GL then you have to install a 3rd party firmware which adds wireless bridging capabilities. Read the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for information about which WRT models support 3rd party firmware and an overview of projects and links.
Remember, however, that you may brick your router if you install a 3rd party firmware incorrectly and you probably void the warranty if you install 3rd party firmware (it is even possible to find out after you restore the original Linksys firmware if you don't clear the NVRAM before).

Do I need to use all the hard drive for time machine or can I partition it

You cannot partition a TC disk.
See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

  • Using libraries vs. Bridge for graphics in placeholder frames

    Hi,
I do not understand the advantanges of using libraries vs. Bridge for my purpose:
    Purpose:
I am working with templates using graphic placeholder frames. The frames are anchored in table cells and have object styles applied defining e.g. the placement of the graphic within the graphic frame.
I want to set up central graphic library for all graphics used in all my documents.
The graphics should then be linked into the documents
    Idea:
set up various InDesign libraries and then drag the graphics into the placeholder frames. Then, when the graphic needs to be changed, do the changes in the library and have all my documents updated at once.
    Problem:
Dragging graphics from the library into the placeholder frames does not seem to work. They are simply placed onto the page and NOT in the graphic frame. On the other hand when I simply store the graphics in various subdirectories in my file system and drag the graphics onto the page using Adobe Bridge, they ARE placed in the graphic placeholder frames.
The library therefore seems a disadvantage, so why should I use a library instead of the Bridge?
Also, will be upgrading to CS5 soon an want to use the live-linking caption feature. Should I use libraries or the Bridge approach?
    Stumped on this issue

I like the idea with the snippet, but when dragging a snippet from Bridge there is still the same problem as with the library item: The graphic is NOT placed into the graphic placeholder frame of my template but is a free-flowing new graphic item which has to be placed manually.
Interestingly, a JPG-file simply saved in the filesystem and dragged from Bridge and dropped over the placeholder frame WILL place the JPG into the frame!
    Why won't snippets do this??

  • Use of sync async bridge for webservices

    Hi ,
We have a scenario where we need to send a data from ERP system to PI via webservice. PI communicates with a third party system via webservice.
The data can be posted to this third party system using webservices. The third party system then reads some data asynchronosly and sends the data to PI . We need this data to be sent to the synchronous webservice from ERP system.
Can we use the sync async bridge for this scenario. Some details on how we can do this will be very helpful..
    Thanks
    Bharathwaj

    Hi Abhishek,
    Thanks for the immediate reply.
    The scenario is
    ERP <---WS/SOAP--->PI -----WS /SOAP of 3rd party---> 3rd Party system (X).
                                                       PI  <------- WS of PI
X posts the data to a backend. THe system X then picks some processed information. This system is not capable of sending the response synchronosly. It can post this data to PI once the data is available. Now PI needs to take this data and post it to the WS request from ERP.
Hope I have provided some clarity on the scenarion..
    Thanks again.

  • Never owned a Mac, thinking of buying a Mac Pro, could use some advice...

    Hey guys,
I know this was a lot to read, but I sincerely hope someone will take the time to answer my questions:
As the title of my post implies I've never owned a Mac in my life. I've always built my own desktops and usually gone to HP or Dell for my laptops. I'm approaching that time again where my custom-built desktop is looking outdated and I'm getting the upgrade itch. I'm looking at all the parts I need to order to build a computer and I can't help but think I'm older now with a full-time job and a one year old daughter in the house. Do I really want to go through the hassle of building a desktop from scratch again? Not really. So I started evaluating things a bit. As I get older I’m really just getting sick and tired of Microsoft’s antics (Vista was a huge disappointment for me) so I decided this could be the year for me to take the Mac plunge.
Now I’m an IT guy, so I have a pretty atypical setup at home. I’m currently running both Windows and Linux on all my computers. Rather than dual boot or use virtualization software I have a pretty intricate system in which I use a product called Acronis Trueimage to experiment with operating systems. What I do is perform a a clean install on an operating system, tweak it as needed for security and to use resources on my LAN than back up the customized OS install to a server a an image file. I have pre-built images for XP, Vista, Ubuntu and OpenSuSE that I can roll out to one of my machines in an average of 15 minutes whenever I get the urge to switch operating systems. I also serve all my data off a NAS box, so since data and OS are kept separate on the network I don’t have to worry about erasing something when I swap between Linux and Windows (as loading an image literally destroys the previous OS install).
So you can see I’m pretty highly specialized. I even have things down to the point to where I have custom images for specific purposes. For instance I have one XP image customized for development, one XP image customized for gaming, etc. Naturally if I got the Mac Pro I’d like to have the freedom to create a similar set of custom OS deployment images (Windows, Linux and OSX) for it as well. In researching the Mac Pro I have some concerns my current system might not work if I go that route. Am I correct in assuming that in order to run an alternative operating system on a Mac I’ll have to run boot camp or something like it? Or upon unboxing my Mac and tweaking Leopard will I be able to use disk imaging software to make a backup image of my preinstalled Leopard hard drive and then do a clean install of Windows XP or Ubuntu and set it up to function like a PC? I guess I’m asking if it’s possible (now that Macs are Intel-based) to run Windows or Linux exclusively on the Mac hardware?
Also I have some concerns about the proprietary nature of the Mac platform. From what I can gather in my research it seems the hardware is pretty locked in. One area that has me really concerned is gaming. I pretty much use Ubuntu exclusively at home for productivity and web surfing. However I still like to load that XP image every now and then to play some games on the LAN with my buddies. I’m not a fan of virtualizing for gaming because of the obvious performance hit you take, so I’d have to be able to run Windows XP free and clear. Also I checked Nvidia’s site and I see no OSX drivers listed there for their cards. Under the Windows platform they are always releasing driver updates to squeeze more game performance out of your card. What if I want to upgrade my video card? How do drivers work on OSX? Does Apple just integrate drivers for just a few specific video cards into the OS? Will I be stuck only able to pick from a handful of video cards approved by Apple?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice!

    Hi Zeus
I may be able to answer some of your questions. And sorry in advance if this sounds like yet another of those "religious conversion" stories
I'm a software developer/architect, mostly doing Microsoft .NET/C#/Web Services coding. I'd been a loyal Microsoft guy since I started on the original IBM PC back in the 80's. Like a lot of people (or so it seems) I just got fed up with Microsoft's high-handed and self-important ways. More importantly, the company always seemed to be lagging behind technically. Looking at beta versions of Vista did not bode well for the future - it just seemed awful. When Vista came out it it was the last straw - I just could not get enthusiastic about this bloated, slow, mess of an operating system. I really hated it. Still do. Even with a top-spec machine, Vista didn't run in the snappy, responsive way it I thought it should. Nothing seemed well thought out.. yuck!
Then, by chance, I was staying for a few days with somebody who had a Mac. Now, for years and years I not even considered Macs as remotely serious machines. My only experience of them was in the late 80's when somebody at work had one. He took delight in pushing a floppy disc into the machine so that it would respond "Ah, it's so big!". Great, just a toy. Not for serious programming work. So, encountering Mac OS X Tiger on my friend's iMac was something of a shock. It was so responsive, clean and elegant. When you turned it on it only took about 30 seconds or so for the thing to be ready for use, etc, etc.
Long story short, I bought an iMac, then a newer, bigger, faster iMac, then a MacBook Pro and now I have a Mac Pro. I still have to work with Windows to do my .NET-related day job. But 95% of the time I work on the Mac using various VMWare virtual machines. I can switch between Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP in a few seconds and still be working in a Mac environment. And the performance of running Windows inside VMWare is even better than on my dedicated top-spec Windows laptop! I have a selection of virtual machines to choose from and, because these virtual machines are just files, I can back them up, revert to saved copies, etc. I've tried Bootcamp but it's much less convenient and performance inside the virtual machines is never an issue (although I don't do any gaming). So, you could keep virtual machines on your NAS box or local Mac hard drive.
With regard to graphics drives, etc. I've never had any problems whatever in this respect. For example, when I installed Windows XP on VMWare it automatically recognised all my hardware (including some obscure audio interfaces, USB-based MIDI interfaces, etc.) and made it available. I must admit that when I was new to the Mac I expected to have driver issues, but never have had... So, my guess is that you'll be able to run all your Windows and Linux distros on the Mac without too many problems.
You mention Apple's hardware as being "locked-in". I don't think that's the case. Certainly the consumer Mac models like the iMac can't be upgraded (by you or me) internally, expect for memory. The Mac Pro though is very easy to upgrade - though there may be some limitations with regard graphics cards.
Re your questions about graphics card drivers. Yes, these come with OS X in just the same as as with Windows. Because I've also used the card that comes "with the box" this has not been an issue for me. However, unless you get a Mac Pro you can't swap-in your existing graphics card. And even then I think you may find restrictions. However, other, more knowledgeable Mac users on this forum may have other thoughts.
Overall though, the experience of using the Mac in terms of software is very much the reverse of Windows - the OS is very open and well documented. It really is an IT person's dream machine - so much to fiddle around with (particularly if you know anything about Unix!). Unlike Microsoft who charge a FORTUNE for their development tools, Apple give them to you for free. And very good they are too!
Finally, one bit of advice. If you are considering buying a new Mac, join the Apple Developer Connection scheme as a Select member. It'll cost you around $400 to join but they give you a hardware discount for Apple-store purchased items that will save you a ton of $$$'s - absolutely definitely worth doing.
Hope this helps (and good luck)!

  • Help needed on using hardware tokens / Smart Cards for encryption

I need help in filling the following gap in my understanding
    I know about
    1. Using keys in Java keystores to encrypt/decrypt data (Signing, symmetric encryption)
    2. Using Keytool to export a digital certificate to a keystore.
    I need help in knowing
    1. How the certificate stored in secret device is shared with java key stores. Do I need to use some special library.

The MSCAPI and CSP standard libraries

We want to install two more SAP servers on this machine but planning to use the Hyper-V Mode to ensure that there is no conflict. With this background here are my queries.
You should not run SAP instances on the server with the hypervisor (the OS running on the metal). If you want to virtualize, then do it for all instances.
    Read

If they are running on the same OS you will always take images of everything.
    > I think this was possible in VMWare.
So those 6 servers are virtualized already??
    > The issue I foresee is that in this image the servers are using Machine Name as host. In the Hyper V mode the host name will change. So how will this work?
The safest way is to do a homogeneous system copy.
    > u2022             Can I run the normal windows mode along with Hyper V. Basically we want to keep our 6 SAP servers running and for the two new servers create two hyper V instances and allocate 2 cores and 4GB RAM each. Is this possible? Or as per Microsoft on the root we should not run any server?
    According to
    Note 1246467 - Hyper-V Configuration Guideline
    this should not be done.

Apple doesn't allow that. They've never said why.

If i sync a load of music to Atv, can i then delete it off my mac or does it have to stay on it? I have around about 80gbs of old stuff that i sometimes listen to but dont want to take up hard drive space on my mac with. Also, does everything have to be on itunes? Ie, do all videos etc have to be imported to itunes 1st or can i just view my files from my mac? Oh and lastly, does Front Row work on it? i like all those up to date previews they have on there. Cheers for any answers.

Essentially no, there are workarounds to this requirement but I'd suggest you consider an external HDD and moving some or all of your itunes library to it.
.....Also, does everything have to be on itunes?...
    Yes.
.....does Front Row work on it?
No, the tv has its own interface it is very similar to front row, but has more features, you wouldn't need front row.

    Hi All,
I have JMS configured in my Web logic server 10.3.4.

I have Web service application with Apache CXF framework.
Now, the problem I need to integrate JMS in my web service application for new web service with PUB/SUB pattern.
Can any one guide me to this.
I am trying to use @WLJmsTransport annotation provided by Weblogic. Is this approach is correct?
And It is giving error during deployment that weblogic.jws.WLJmsTransport is not allowed as it is a JAX-WS type web service.
I think It is creating problem with annotation parameters.
    I am using annotation like @WLJmsTransport(contextPath="transports", serviceUri="JMSTransport", queue="Queue", portName="JMSTransportServicePort")
and ConnectionFactory with name ConnectionFactory and JNDI jms/ConnectionFactory, Queue with name Queue and JNDI jms/Queue, Topic with name Topic and JNDI jms/Topic.

  • Is it safe to keep downloaded movies in the Macbook Pro or do I need to use an external hard disk for those ? Please suggest.

Is it safe to store the downloaded movies from iTunes in my Macbook Pro or do I need to store those separately in an external hard disk ? Please advice.

It will be no better or worse than any other video file and should not be responsible for any system instability.  As I alluded to earlier, video takes up a lot of space and you can quickly use up that 200 GB of space.  Download a few files to you MBP and see what impact it has.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.
If you find that space is getting tight on your MBP, then get an external for the video files and another one to back them up.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.

  • Need help using wifi on my iPad for computer

Hi guys sorry if this question has been asked before but i wasn't able to find my answer anywhere so here goes :)
I just bought an iPad mini and it's awesome i love it. But due to some problems my wired internet connection to my computer is not working anymore and i am unable to buy a new wire for about a week.
Just wondering if there is a way for me to use the wifi connection on my iPad to connect my desktop PC to the internet as i am unable to stream movies and play games without the wired internet connection. I am aware of the personal hotspot option, however this only allows me to use my  data on my SIM card (i dont have a lot of data to spare so this isn't really effective for me, especially since i will be playing games)
Your input is greatly appreciated :D

No, the personal hotspot is your only option.
