Thinking of buying iMac, Front row Question

I'm thinking of getting a new iMac that would be hooked up to my media center downstairs and used by my wife for non-front row purposes (email, internet access). My problem is I've read somewhere that Front Row might not work with music from a connected iPod or shared libraries over a home network. Since my 140GB music collection is upstairs on my G5 this is an issue I need to have clarified because not being able to view content on any of my networked macs would negate one of the reasons I'm buying this mac.
So, can Front Row play music from my networked G5 upstairs or am I going to be better off fixing up my old Pismo to give to my wife and buying something like the Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com/) for my media needs?

Front Row needs the audio files to be in the designated iTunes folder. However, I don't believe this folder needs to be on the iMac. If you changed the iTunes Folder Location in iTunes Preferences to the networked G5 then I believe Front Row will play those tracks from the G5 as long as you have the G5's hard drive mounted via File Sharing.
The following is from iTunes Help:
If you try to play a song in Front Row on your iMac G5 (iSight) but the application can't find the song because it's not in the default iTunes library, you'll see an alert message that either says, "iTunes cannot play this song" or "Communications error." If this happens, just show Front Row where you keep your music.
If you keep all of your music in one folder location:
Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced tab, then click the General tab below it.
Click Change next to the "iTunes Music folder location" section.
Navigate to and select the folder that contains your tunes.
Click Choose.
Click OK.
If your music is stored in different folder locations:
Open iTunes.
From the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library to copy songs from all locations to your default iTunes Music folder. Let the consolidation process finish before you go back to Front Row.
Tip: If you want to play just one song from another folder, play the song in iTunes first. Front Row will be able to find it once iTunes knows where the song is located.

  • Front Row questions

    1. Is the movie trailer list automatically updated? If so how often?
    2. In the music section, the top two options I see are 'Top- Titel' and Top - Musikvideos'. Now I might be missing something but these appear to not be in my native language! Is there a regional setting somewhere?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi Matt,
1.) Yes. The trailer list is connected to Apple.com/trailers. There is no specific time frame in which the trailers are updated, but every time a trailer is added to the Apple.com page, your Front Row is also updated.
2.) I also have 'Top-Titel' and 'Top Musikvideos' on Front Row. I know German, and this is the language. I think that it is somehow accidentally connected to the iTunes Store language. One day, I changed the store language to German for one day, and then changed it back to English. From that point onward, Front Row music is now in German. But, this is not right, since everything else in Front Row is in English. (I am assuming you are the same.) Have you ever done language-changing to you iTunes Store? If not, then it must be an unrelated bug in Front Row. If so, I tinkered with iTunes languages, and nothing worked.
    Sorry.

  • 2 iMacs + Front Row

    Hi,
I have recently bought 2 iMacs both running Leopard. I have video files in my Movies folder on Mac1 which show and play correctly on that Mac via Front Row.
I cannot see those files in Front Row on the second Mac.
If I go to Sources on either Mac they both show only themselves.
How do I get each Mac to play video from the other, ie, use each other as a source?
I have an Airport Extreme running the network if that's important.

Just import the movies into your itunes library and turn on sharing in iTunes prefs -then use front row on another mac to view those movies. It works great. You don't need any aliases in the finder.
Import your movie files into the itunes library but the physical files do not have to be copied into your music folder. You can set that in the itunes prefs > advanced > general > "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checkbox
When you want to view remote media in front row, select "Sources", the last menu item in the main front row screen. Use this to select a remote source, then select what you want to watch on that remote source. Way cool!
Under 10.4 it worked better mounting the remote volume in the finder and just opening the movies with QT. Front row and iTunes used to choke trying to watch movies shared through itunes -even though I could mount the remote HD in the finder and play the movies just fine with QT.
Front row under 10.5 will now play stuff shared by another source on your network, even a mac running 10.4. There is a bit of a pause as it starts to buffer the movie but you can start watching the movie right away. It starts playing as it is buffering with good visual feedback about what is going on. No spinning beach ball.
Front row takes advantage of chapter markers in my remote movie files too. There is much more control over pausing and playing and skipping around while watching a movie through the 10.5 interface.
All my important media is on one mac and I can play back that media from any mac in the house with a few clicks of a remote control. Thank you Apple!

  • 2 Front Row questions: Documentation? Low volume?

Love Front Row, especially since I bought an Apple Remote; HOWEVER... I can't figure out how to add videos (my own, not iTune stores) so I can watch them in 'Movies.' Can you only watch video (other than physical DVDs) that resides in iTunes? And I cannot understand why the volume, song-for-song, in Front Row is a LOT lower than in iTunes, even cranked all the way up.
Is there some documentation, somewhere, on working with Front Row? Everything I've seen says "Go to 'Mac Help' and look up 'Front Row;' which I have, with these anemic topic results:
    About iTunes
Apple Remote buttons to use with Front Row
If you don’t see a DVD menu in Front Row
If “Your computer is not connected to the Internet” appears
    Shortcuts for Front Row
Turning off the screen saver in Front Row
Using Front Row to play music from a shared iTunes library
I'd like to do much more with 'Front Row,' but I need more information -- can anyone help?
    Thanks!

If you can play your own videos using the QuickTime Player application, you can put your videos into your user's "Movies" folder. Front Row will look in there for loose video files that are not in iTunes. If you can't play your videos using the QuickTime Player application, they won't appear in Front Row even if they are in your user's "Movies" folder. There are a couple of plug-ins for QuickTime that might help you play more types of video files.
Front Row version 1.x in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) used to open iTunes in the background when you played a song. This would give the Front Row interface access to all features of iTunes including the "sound check" option to adjust the volume of all songs so they're similar. Front Row version 2.x in Mac OS X 10.5.x and 10.6.x has direct access to your iTunes library without using iTunes. Unfortunately, this access does not seem to touch all features, like "sound check". My impression is also that Front Row is a bit quieter than playing music in iTunes directly. However, for me, it's not too noticeable.

  • Thinking of buying iPad, have some questions

I have a iMac and am thinking of getting the family a iPad without the internet service,(AT&T is very slow here and verizons ipad plan is not attractive enough for me, I already have wireless aircard through verizon and have tons of usage still left at the end of the month so it does not make sense to buy a separate plan) the only internet I have is a wireless air card plugged into my imac via USB and the ipad would be staying in the house anyway. Can I share my internet connection from my imac to the ipad through airport? I share my internet connection like this already with the kids wii and nintendo dsi and get a good signal throughout the house. So just wondering if it works the same way with a ipad!?!?
And does the iPad have a USB port incase I want to travel and use my aircard with it on the road?
    Thanks, Stephanie

The iPad does not have a USB port. It has a dock connection, and also sells as part of it's Camera Connection Kit a USB adapter.
You're free to plug anything you might like into the 'USB port' which you've just created in this way and see whether you can do whatever it is that you're trying to do. You must keep in mind, however, that Apple has a relatively small and limited set of supported uses: Any unsupported task which you might nonetheless be able to do could well disappear without notice or warning at some point in the future, as some discovered to their dismay on upgrading to 4.2.1.

  • Thinking of buying iMac

Do the 21.5" and 27" both have 4 available memory slots? Wondering why the purchase configuration only allows a maximum of 16GB on the 21.5" and a maximum of 32GB on the 27" at time of purchase?????

The new 21 inch screen iMac models have no user upgradeable RAM any longer. They are completely, glued up, sealed up, almost throw away computing appliances, now. You have to order what you think you may need for RAM in the future at the time of ordering/purchasing.
That is why I recommend to new Mac purchasers that if they consider a 21.5 screen model, order one with the complete 16 GBs of RAM.

  • I Think I accidentally deleted FRONT ROW, TIME MACHINE, and SPACES

I wanted to put those three things into a stack, because they arent apps like the others are, and so I made a folder on my desktop, put the apps in the folder, and then put the folder in the dock. I thought it was pointless to have a folder in the dock and the desktop, so I deleted the one on the desktop permanently, and then got an '?' where the stack used to be. Did I permanently delete the app from the computer? If I did, how do I get it back?

Wow! I'm not the only one. I "organized" my applications folder, and now I can't find Spaces, Time Machine, and the System Preferences pane. They have big question marks on them in the dock.
Hopefully someone can give us an answer. I've been googling to see if there is a way to do a custom install from the Leopard cd. I've made an appointment with the Apple store for tomorrow afternoon just in case. If I get an answer, I'll let you know.

  • Thinking of buying 24inch Imac. Got a few purchasing questions.

Hi, I am thinking of getting the 24inch Imac. 3.06Ghz processor. 4 gigs of ram. 1tb HD. And the price is $3,017.
I was wondering if I go to my nearest Apple store on Tax Free weekend (or the apple online store). Will I get Tax off the Imac?
Also my mom is a homeschool teacher. Will she be able to get the Education discount at the Apple Store (not online one)?

You'll need a lot more than tax off your imac. The question you should be asking is..."should I buy one?". You should (try and) talk to someone at Apple before you spend that much money, and ask them why the Video/Display on the 24" Intel Core Duo is so unreliable and flaky. They don't seem to want to address the SERIOUS issues. You have no idea what I'm going through (conveniently for Apple , after warranty expiration) with my lemon. I have owned dozens of Macs, and this is by far, the most unreliable, flaky, crash-prone, frustrating piece of equipment I have ever purchased. I have to place a large fan about 12 inches from the computer to prevent it from overheating. If the ambient room temperature gets over 22-23 degrees Celcius, the crashes are far more frequent... sometimes about 30 minutes apart - if I'm lucky enough to be able to work that long. I can't count how many preference and database files have been corrupted by these sudden shutdowns. Often, it takes many attempts (or a long wait) before I can reboot. I can barely see what I'm writing now, because there's a grey line through most of the text. I've emailed Apple, but received no response - no surprise there. I send many crash reports a day too. They need to concentrate on developing a reliable, stable platform before they waste so much of their time and my money on pretty, shiny boxes. I'm disgusted. I posted (just a few) examples of what I see all day, every day, at: http://gallery.me.com/jjmcharg/100009
Good luck with your search for a computer.

  • Anybody know if adding more ram to an iSight iMac will speed up front row

Just got a 20" iSight iMac (love it) with the base ram but as most people seem to be experiencing, front row seems a little sluggish. Just wondered if anybody knows if sticking another gig of ram in it would improve front row performance?

The answer is absolutely yes. I ran with 512MB for a while and I noticed it seemed like I was getting PageIns every now and again. Sometimes quite often if iPhoto or other big apps were open. A pagein is like virtual memory in OS9. RAM has to be swapped to disk to free it up to do another task.
Check out Activity Monitor- it'll give you an idea of what's going on. Don't get me wrong MacOS X is very good at managing its resources. However disk paging is a slow reality.
I upgraded to a total of 1.5GB of RAM a while ago. The difference is nothing short of phenomenal. All the big pauses in FrontRow are gone (occasionally iTunes still has to fire up if it was closed...2-3 Sec). I leave iPhoto open all the time and everything is always snappy. Daskboard is another big beneficiary- it's way better. I think 1.5GB was a good choice because I still use it all every now and again- perhaps 2 PageIns/Day, but not often enough to notice. Even upgrading to a 1GB would certainly be a big help but remember if you don't benefit from 1.5GB now you will in a year.
    Cheers, Ed.
P.S. Now is a great time to buy, prices have stabilized, find a good sale and buy today- you won't regret it. I paid $96 total including all tax and shipping for a 1GB stick.

  • IMac (Original shipped with Tiger) and Front Row

    Quick question
If i have an iMac, the first one that was shipped with Tiger back in June 2005 and i purchase the Apple Remote, will it be compatible with my computer and will it come with Front Row, or is it exclusively only for iMac's shipping with the Remote and iPods with a Universal Dock?

Is your profile correct? Is there a reason you're still running Mac OS X 10.4.6? I think you'll need to make sure your iLife applications and iTunes are up-to-date as well as Mac OS X for everything to work correctly together. Mac OS X can be updated to 10.4.11, iTunes can be updated to 7.6.1 and QuickTime can be updated to 7.4.5 all for free. Which version of iLife do you have? '06 or '08? You'll need to make sure you have the most recent versions of iPhoto as well...

  • Front Row on 2nd Gen iMac G5

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to run Front Row on a 2nd Gen iMac G5 using an Apple Remote?
Hos does the Apple Remote work? If it's a Bluetooth device, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work?
Unless 'Front Row' is a 'hard-wired' ROM application?
I like the look but I bought a 2G recently, which I think is the nuts...to be honest the built in i-Sight is of little interest to me...makes me think of internet cafes...and it's going to make the London Store even more of a foreign exchange student hangout.

It says front row and photo booth are included in the software bundled with the iMac. " More software
In addition, the iMac G5 comes with an incredible bundle of software:
    • iLife ’05, which includes the latest versions of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand
    • Front Row
    • Photo Booth
    • iWork ‘05 30-day trial
    • AppleWorks
    • Quicken 2006 for Mac
    • 2006 World Book
    • Nanosaur 2
    • Marble Blast Gold
    • Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive "
I dont see why apple wont make that available for purchase for those of us who just bought that last rev Imac in May.

    Hi,
I have two questions to Front Row:
    1. Front Row have problems with playing video podcasts? Is this right so? I can't see video podcasts with Front Row
    2. Front row have problems with sleep mode of my iMac G5 20".
When I use the Apple Remote to wake up my iMac from sleep mode, Front Row doesn't start here. I see only the Mac finder. Why?
    Sorry for my bad english.
    Greetings, Bernd

Bernd, since your comp is still under warranty you may wish to give the online tech support a try -->HERE<--</a>. Click on the "Chat with a support agent" link.
If you don't want to go that route, then I suggest that you call them over the phone. Hopefully, you have the AppleCare Protection Plan if your 90 day warranty ran out.
    Good Luck.
