Thinking of converting to Infinity

Hi
If anyone has any experience, or advice on the following it will be much appreciated.
I currently have BT Total Unlimited Business Broadband provided via ADSL on my home telephone number.  The broadband used to be on a business telephone line but was moved when the business closed in order to save the cost of an exchange line that wasn't used for any calls.  The move was also made to keep the "btconnect.com" email addresses that were in use for personal messages and had been in existence for over ten years.
I am a BT shareholder and have received a tempting offer to take up BT Infinity 2, inclusive of Anytime calls, if I switch to a home Infinity service.
I can't find a straight answer as to whether I can keep the old btconnect email addresses (we have 7 or 8 in use) or whether they will disappear in favour of a single new btinternet address.  I can find mention of the ability to set up email aliases but not whether I can have more than one actual address.
There seems to be some question as to whether the existing home telephone number will be ceased and a new one provided.  My current number has been in use here for nearly 40 years so I would not wish to have to change it.
In an attempt to sort out a fault last year, an Openreach engineer installed a Home Hub 3 (incorrectly as it turned out when it kept falling over) but the wireless range was far worse than my old Netgear DG834GT and devices less than 20 feet away could not get a reliable connection.  I don't see why it should be, but is the home hub 3 any better with Infinity or would I probably end up with a range extender (Powerline maybe)?  Opening ports on the home hub 3 (for use with an XBox) didn't seem to be as successful as on the Netgear router.
Thanks in advance.

Yes I've checked the BT estimates - 54.5/18M for Infinity 2.  The ADSL broadband we've got not is around 5/0.8M so there is potentially a big difference if we can get round the email and router issues..
We had a fault last year, coincidentally (??) when the local exchange was being upgraded when the broadband kept losing sync and our speed dropped from 10/0.9M to 2/0.3.  That was when we acquired the home hub as the engineer who eventually came out was blaming the problem on our old Netgear router.  The fact that I connected another router with no difference didn't convince him.  When the home hub kept falling over I found out he hadn't installed it properly anyway.  I wasn't comvinced the home hub was new as the engineer went out to his van and reappeared with just the hub and the power unit, no other cables, paperwork, etc.  That initial experience, and the very poor wireless coverage (which BT technical support said wasn't of any interest as they don't guarantee it will work anyway) together with the difficulty of getting the correct ports open for XBox use don't inspire me with confidence.

My PC crashed. I am thinking of converting to a Mac and all of my software is PC based.
All of my Adobe software is on disk; CS5 Production Premium, CS 5 Web Premium, Lightroom 5
    1) How do I convert from Windows OS to Mac OS or will I have to purchase additional software to make them compatible
    2) Are updates available if I have to reinstall from disk with the Windows OS
    3) What options do I have available?

You will need to upgrade to CS6 and make the platform switch, though even that actually doesn't make much sense. There are notable compatibility issues with OS X 10.10. all software these days are downloads.

  • Thinking of moving to Infinity

    Hi,
Im currently with Virgin Media on the 100mbs service which is over contested and thinking of moving to Infinity. I was wondering if i could get some answers on some installation issues im thinking about and hoping to get them sorted if possible before i place my order.
I live in an apartment so everything is on the same floor (no stairs)
Currently the master phone sockets are in the hallway (both BT and VM) but my computer is in the bedroom. I do not wish to use wireless as i use the computer for online gaming. My question is, will the BT engineer fit a new socket in the bedroom so that the hub can be next to the computer and directly connected and if so what cost will be involved if any with fitting this.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, Jay.

    Hiya,
When the guy installed my Infinity service, i asked him if i could have the main socket moved upstairs. He did it free of charge.
He routed the new line from the master socket to my bedroom and installed the new socket there..
    Hope this helps!

  • Thinking of ordering BT Infinity

    Hi.
I am thinking of ordering the BT Infinity broadband and phone package though am having serious doubts over the use of throttling.
I have emailed support and got the reply...
"We cannot answer this question until your broadband has been activated."
I tried the Live Chat option and all they said was "No we don't". Then when I challenged them and said that iin the T&C's it said BT did throttle P2P appsm, they then hung up.
Really, really awful customer service so far BT!
Can anyone confirm whether BT throttle or speed manage...
    Spotify
    Steam
    Online Gaming
    Iplayer and online video/audio streaming
    Many thanks.

The only throttling is  when using P2P protocols at peak times eg.  1700  to 0000
and weekends as stated in  BT's T&C's

  • Thinking of converting to the darkside

    Switching from Microsoft to Apple.
Have one basic question can I run windows based apps on the OS? Like in Linux where you fool them into thinking it is on windows?

    Greetings eyol
Yes, you can run Windows apps in OSX using an application called Virtual PC. It was developed by Connectix and later bought by Microsoft, so that's who you buy it from. It creates (as the name says) a software-based emulation of a PC on your mac. You can install any OS on this 'PC', including (of course) Windows. See
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx?pid=virtualpc
    for details.
    Also, a few points...
    1. I'm an MCSE and a sysadmin with an all-Windows environment. I switched mid-last year and have never regretted it. Not once.
    2. An emulation evironment (like VPC) will always be slower than a hardware-based PC, since the software has to translate system calls, etc. Graphical-based apps, games and prcessor-intestive apps aren't good cadidates for emulation. That said, if what you're doing will run well under WINE, it should run fine under VPC.
    3. Especially on this board, it's going the other way (Mac to Windows) that's considered converting to the darkside.

  • Thinking about upgrading to infinity but moving ma...

My master socket is upstairs currently and there is an extension that runs from that and the wire goes around the outside of the house and enters into the hallway. I was ideally hoping to get it all moved and ready for installation before even booking an installation appointment.
Would BT disable both the sockets and install a new master socket at the front of my house In a front room? A hole would need to be drilled through the wall then the new master socket connecting up?

Thanks for the response is that home wiring solution you speak of internal?
Because like I say I want the master socket moving to a front room which will require a hole drilling through the outside wall and the cable directing in (I don't really want extra wires running internally when all it needs is one wire running outside the house and then in). I have no need for the 2 sockets currently connected and would happily have them disconnecting so the new master socket would be the only socket in the house.
I doubt the infinity engineer would do this thats why I stated i'd have no problems getting this done beforehand but was just wondering if BT would do this for me and at what sort of cost. Think I was hoping someone on this forum had done something similar and could give me their impressions on this regarding cost etc.

  • Thinking of converting a secondary DC & replica DFS into a Hyper-V host - a good idea?

    Hello!
I am trying to minimize the amount of server hardware regarding adding more servers to our domain (2008 R2).
We have a quite new and strong (2x 6-core xeon with 24GB RAM) secondary DC server in our 2008 R2 domain. I am trying to come up with a better plan to utilize this machine's resources which was a bit of an overkill for just an AD, DNS and DFS services.
Do you think it would be a good idea to demote that server, erase it, install 2008 R2 in Hyper-V mode and then add the AD service with DNS and DFS in Virtual mode and more (separate) virtual servers for other various purposes - thinking of Remote Desktop
Services specifically for now, it can't run on same physical server as AD which is a slight problem as we are not planning on getting any hardware anytime soon.
Can MS Exchange also run on Hyper-V? That would be a plus as well if it could.
    Thanks for insights.
I am new to Hyper-V, never tried it before. Also forgot to mention, we use 2008 R2 Standard licenses, not enterprise/datacenter whatever.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3512
is this the "regular free Hyper-V" you mentioned? is it a standalone OS that needs no key?
anyways, the question stands, I am not sure I can use the physical and virtual keys (from 2 standard licenses) in VMs, i'd certainly like to... 4 VMs sound really good, much better than 2.
that is the old one, there is a new 2012 R2 version for datacenters

I'm talking about production environment in live business ...
reviewed the 2008 R2 licensing and it seems that no matter the approach, each of Standard licenses allows only for a single VM...
    EDIT:
OK, that is a full feature version, free and supposedly an RTM, which is good. might consider it for future.
either way, legally speaking, the licensing problem with 2008 R2 STD still exists, because officially you can use only 1 STD license per VM. As far as I understand from legal standpoint, one cannot use both physical + virtual keys (from a single 2008
R2 license) for two separate VM guests, no matter how, it probably is not OK (even though it may work and activate properly).

  • Thinking of joining BT Infinity

I am considering joining BT Infinity since Virgin Media has become very un-reliable. Their Technical Support team is made up of a bunch of idiots, just yesterday I spoke to a guy who didn't even know what latency was.
Is BT Infinity truly Unlimited? I currently use upwards of 500 GB a month with Virgin Media, will this be a problem on BT?
What is the uptime and reliability like with BT Infinity?
What is BT Technical Support like? India Based? Skilled Knowledgeable Operators?

  • Thinking of migrating to Infinity?

Im currently with Zen, had no problems for years but their fibre package is expensive and capped (although it does have fixed ip's and no throttling).  My exchange FTTC live date is the end of March 2012 and the exchange has no LLU currently.
If I stay with Zen will they just be reselling me the Infinity service as there is no LLU?

So basically, if I stay with my current ISP I will get the same speeds as a BT subscriber, taking into account the service differences, capping, no throttling etc?  Are the package differences the only way to influence the quality of service without LLU?
What I'm getting at is; why pay £38 per month for 100gb uncapped and an £80 setup fee and only 2mbit uploads and great tech/customer service when I can get the same DL speeds and up to 10mbit upload speeds, no FUP but peak throttling for certain packets, no fixed ip but I can live with that (use dynamic dns), **bleep** service for no setup fee and £25 per month.  Contracts are similar 12 and 18 month.
I've read loads of negative Infinity posts, but forums are usually full of problems rather than praise and I've never had any issues with my ADSL service.  Do I stick with the cap to ensure a consistent service or go for the better deal?

  • I'm thinking about converting from a PC to a Mac but....

Okay so the laptop i have right now is a Toshiba Satellite PC. I do love it to death but I hate that there are a million and a half viruses for it >.< I'm getting into Graphic Design and computer gaming more. Right now I have a ton of PC software and I've heard that Mac can read almost all software. So I'm wondering if some of my PC only games will run on a Mac as long as it has Windows XP on it? The only reason I'm asking is because I'm about to buy a small bundle in Adobe Web Bundle..My possible future Mac will be farther along before I buy one. I'm a college student so I want to wait, save, and try to buy it myself. SO I guess my question is....would it be worth it for me since I have soooo much PC software..<br>
    >.> a PC   Windows XP

well I don't hardcore game or anything but I do play online games (I.E. Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Black and White)My newest passion has been making graphics...hence why i'm getting the adobe web bundle ...I love computers and my boyfriend is also into computers. He was going to college for computers but he's not sure if thats what he truely wants to do with his life. That's why I'm asking about switching over to a Mac. The Mac I want is the really nice black one...mmm...but since I just bought this computer last year it's going to be a very long while until i get my desktop Mac (saddness). So I won't need any other software to install the PC programs? Like something other than xp. I don't really need to worry about losing my discount because my mom is also an educator so either way I et my discount =D

  • PC user thinking of converting to mac.

Hello i am a fed up PC user who likes doing video, some gaming, surfing for info, but mostly making video on the computer imported from the camcorder, mostly racing video with fast motion. My question is , is the IMAC a great computer for my purpose, and yes it will be equiped with 2 G of ram. How reliable is this operating system really. And Imovie is it a good editting program which will allow me to create many special effects etc. How often do they freeze up and is this a fast computer. Many thanks for your honest answers.

    GreyFoxx,
Running multiple programs simultaneously is no problem and very stable. The Mac OS X does that very well, very stable. Why are the prices so "high?" Prices are a bit deceiving. Its hard to look at Dell, for example, and see a 'complete' system running less than $1000 (or less) and then look at say the iMac 17" that runs about $1300. If you want a low end PC prices favor the PC market. If you want/need a graphics system or anything other than a "low end" product the Mac pricing is actually quiet reasonable. For example, take a look at this comparison between the Mac Pro and a similarly configured Dell: http://www.systemshootouts.org/shootouts/desktop/2006/0809_dt3200.html
Note the Dell didn't include a monitor.
You can do a simple Google search of 'PC vs Mac' and read others opinions. I'm not trying to sell you a Mac. In fact I work with Dell equipment on a daily basis and their stuff is good with few exceptions. Personally, I've grown to dislike Windows based systems (PCs) over the years. I use Linux in my job as well and found it to be superior in many respects. Macs run off a UNIX derivative. As a result you don't need to worry about spyware, viruses, etc. If you're into video or photo production there is nothing better than a Mac for these tasks. Final Cut Express/Pro and Aperture are some of the best applications available.
What am I telling you? Do some research and determine what it is you need to do with whatever system, find the software you need to do your work. That will tell you which systems might work for you. I'd recommend you go to an Apple store and chat with one of their guru's do the same with an IT Pro for the PC side. And, ask questions here.

  • How do you convert PC-ripped DVDs using a Mac?

Got a question about converting/burning video DVDs from PC to Mac.
So I acquired a rip of a Video DVD, which seems to be PC-made, as the original rip was made up of numerous RAR files (pls-amipys.r00, pls-amipys.r01, etc).
I used a program (UnRarX I think) to convert these to a standard .iso disc, with a VIDEO_TS folder that seemed to play just fine using DVD Player program. I then tried burning that folder to a playable DVD (using the Freeware program Liquid CD; Toast seems to be freezing up on me/not doing so for some reason...).
However, when I tried playing the burned disc in my DVD player, every chapter was jumping/skipping, like someone was using the DVD as a **** turntable (please, no hip-hop references...).
Anyway I've never had this problem with any other .isos/VIDEO_TS folders I've tried burning to DVD, so I know it's got to be an issue with my having had to convert it.
Any (serious) explanations for why this may be?? Any suggestions for any other programs I can use to convert/burn the original rip so it'll play properly?
    Thank you!!

  • BT Infinity Order Frustration!! Still waiting for ...

Ok, so I found out I could receive BT Infinity at the beginning of this month. I had line rental with another provider but quickly agreed to change and go for the Infinity Option 2 and Unlimited line rental package which was placed on 3rd January 2012.. I was told both services would go live on Weds 18th January and an engineer would attend my property between 1pm and 6pm. The home hub arrived in good time and I received notification yesterday that the phone line service had successfully changed over. Everything was going great and the next stage was for the engineer to attend. I received no phone call throughout the day but patiently waited. It reached 6pm and noone had turned up to my discust! I quickly rang up the BT help line and explained what had happened. After the call centre communicated with another department I was then told for whatever reason the engineer due to do the install had only received the job at 6pm which was when he was finishing and was the end of the timescale for what I had been allocated! I had no option but to accept this excuse but found it rather bizarre that this could of happened after it had been planned in over 2 weeks before! Anyway, I was then promised an engineer the following day for the morning and that I would be set as high priority and would definitely receive a phone call from the engineer shortly before attendance. The following day arrive and guess what, another no show! However I did receive a phone call late morning from the call centre explaining that I could not even receive Infinity in my area?? Or rather because I hadn't been with bt's line rental service for any length of time?? I struggled to understand what I'd been told? I challenged this and said if this was true then why was my order accepted in the first place?? After discussing this, the woman then went to speak to someone and came back to say we would able to get infinity but couldn't promise anything and another appointment would need to be arranged, and so would need to call back when this had been done. Later that day I couldn't wait any longer not knowing what was going on! I checked online on my bt account to find no order then existed?? I decided to give bt another call, I was told I'd be able to receive a strong strength infinity connection and could sort out another appointment right there and then. I was given the date next available which is tues 31st jan. I am now hoping the engineer does turn up this time! I have since logged back into my account and there is now an order existing for the correct date but instead of it saying my order is for infinity as before, it says 'your order - bt total broadband Option 1'?? This is what I currently have and am wanting to upgrade from this to infinity! I rang bt again and was told it says that because that's what broadband I'm currently on and would be getting infinity. I don't understand why it would say in my order though this and not infinity?? Can someone please double check this for me as I don't fancy it being wrong and an engineer turning up to find he didn't think he was installing infinity and then wouldn't be able to do it this delaying further!! Help!! It's so frustrating!!

    ORDER UPDATE:
Infinity Engineer arrived today for the install, and everything went smoothly! Pleased everything finally got sorted
However, I have checked my speeds and they aren't all that great! ...
I was and am estimated to be able to get Infinity at around 35.8 MB Download and 6 MB Upload speeds on my line  (I have checked again tonight on the broadband availability speed checker for new bt customers).
I have just done a speed test on speedtester.bt.com/ using a wired connection with only the one web browser page open, no other applications/programs open as instucted.
    The results are as follows:
    5092 KBPS Download
    6399 KBPS Upload
    'Acceptable download 12000 - 5524 kbps
    IP Profile - 5524 kbps'
The upload speed is good, but surely I should be getting alot more than 5 MB download speeds?? The download speed test bar shows red and says a further test (3) is required which involves changing the broadband username and password to a default example given and resubmitted but I can't seem to figure out how to do this?
    Can somebody help?
    Thanks

  • Convert from PSE10 to Lightroom - metadata concerns

After one too many frustrations with PSE, I've been looking for an alternative program.  I don't care about editing - metadata (Organizer type features) are my focus.  I looked at a few non-Adobe programs - a big problem with them is I can't import my PSE10 catalog, with 12,000 photos.  On the PSE forum, the most common advice was to go to Lightroom, so I was holding out hope for that.  However, I've played with the LR 5 trial for half a day now, and as far as I can tell, it doesn't make good use of the PSE catalog either!  This is very disappointing for me, but I'm wondering if some of you folks can show me things I'm missing.
I'm looking into to converting from PSE10 to LR 5 on a Windows 7 machine.  I have about 12,000, half TIFs from scanned images and half JPGs from digital cameras.  As I said, I only care about metadata management.  My focus is genealogy, so getting the original dates of scanned pictures captured is very important, and these often are only roughly known.
My main issue is that it seems to me that LR is taking the metadata from the photo files, not the catalog.  I used the LR feature "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog".  The reason I say this is for two reasons:
    (1) When PSE10 writes tags to files, it adds to any tags that are already there.  So although PSE10 shows only the updated set of tags in the GUI, the photo files have both old and new tags.  After doing the LR Upgrade PSE Catalog, I'm seeing old and new tags.  It appears to be ignoring what is in the catalog and looking at the file.  (As far as I know, the old tags are not present in the PSE catalog anymore, so it can't be looking at the converted catalog.)
    (2) PSE10 allow you to tag photos with incomplete dates (e.g. no time, no day and/or no month).  But if PSE10 has an incomplete date, it won't write it to the file (very annoying for working with historical photos).  But LR does not show these partial dates, it only shows complete dates.  In this case, I'm not sure if LR is showing the metadata in the photo files, or if it dropped the PSE10 catalog date info during the "Upgrade".
So my main question is, am I missing something with regards to the import, or am I correct in my impression that this "Upgrade PSE Catalog" isn't doing much of anything?  (ExifTool shows all the metadata in the photo files -- much more complete than LR for that matter -- so what am I gaining by importing the PSE catalog into LR?)
A couple other miscellaneous questions if I may:
-- In PSE10, there is a notes field in the metadata, which goes into XMP-album in the photo files.  Does LR not support this?  As far as I can tell, LR supports only a few XMP namespaces, with no support for others.
-- In LR in the Folder pane, I have no scroll bar, so I can only see the first few entries.  This seems to be a serious bug to me.  Or am I missing something?
-- It appears in LR that one cannot show your entire catalog in the main pane sorted by folder then by file name.  Is this correct?  (This also seems to be a major drawback to me!)
-- When I try to change the date of a photo (Edit Capture Time in LR), it forces you to enter a complete date/time, unlike PSE10.  Overall, it is much easier to manage these dates in PSE, it seems.  Does LR handle incomplete dates to any level?
-- When I did my PSE import/"Upgrade", it assigned the wrong file names to some of my photos (it used file names from other photos in the catalog).  Is this a known issue?
I imagine I have a very unusual vantage point, but at this point it seems that PSE is far superior to LR!  And I'm not happy with PSE10!!  Anyways, thanks in advance for your input.  Sorry about the long post - wasn't sure if I should divide it up or not.
    Bill

This is a reply to the post from John R. Ellis...
You mentioned "Adobe has never bothered to fix...".  Note that the last post by Michel B in this thread
    http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78779&page=2
indicates that PSE11 can handle this.
You say "After importing.... I used ExifTool to append..."  Did you do this file by file, or with a script?  A Perl script?  (The reason I ask is that I would have to learn Perl, so I would have to decide how much this means to me...)
Regarding your suggestion to use fake dates
    "(e.g. "1970" => "1/1/1970 00:00:00")"
I've been aware of this since I read it in your psedbtool material a year or two ago, but I've resisted making such changes.  When dealing with historical photos, you want the ambiguity.  In fact, you'd like to use things like "About 1970" and such.  I wish the photo metadata community would get on board with that.
Regarding your point about catalog conversion, for me it sounds like it would be just as good to import the photo files directly.  (Better for me, I think, since converting the catalog seems to lose the folder hierarchy in the LR Folder view for some reason.  However, if I'm going to import the photo files directly, then LR has no advantage for me over any other program that I can see.  The ExifTool GUI utility does a much better job with the metadata in general - the key drawback for me being the fact that you have to type out the keywords each time you want to add one to photo.  Looking at the ACDSee Pro trial, that appears to handle metadata better than any of the Adobe products - the critical drawback being that it uses its proprietary XMP namespaces, meaning interoperability issues.  LR has drawbacks for me, such as not being able to sort by folder than filename in the main view pane and the lack of support for other XMP namespaces (and the Folder pane scrollbar thing).  So at this point I'm in a state of depression.  As far as I can tell, I only have a partial solution to my problems - upgrade from PSE10 to PSE11.  Truly a depressing notion!!
