Thinking of getting G5 Quad - Questions.

Hello everyone,
I have currently a G4 MDD 2003 dual 1.25. Right now, I am at odds end with either getting for under 1100.00 a nice G5 Quad 2.5 with everything versus a bid for $1000.00 I already put in on a 6-day listing for a Mac Pro from last year 2008.
Here is what I use my current Mac for:
1. Surfing the i-net
2. Emailing, and skype, ichat, video conferencing and video chatting.
3. Playing 1980s based video games, and some modern ones.
4. Watching regular DVDs, as blu-ray isn't supported through Mac OS X as of yet. Though, not as of yet, I plan to watch High Definition content, such as movies.
I don't use my mac for the following:
Pro Apps, such as Aperture, Motion, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS3,CS4. Lets see what else.. Garageband, heavy intense gaming, and or heavy processor intensive applications.
I am mainly looking at the Mac Pro in getting it for its expandability and being able to upgrade what I choose, and not being pushed back by system integrated parts. I know processors can't be upgraded, so I have learned to live with this as I am happy with my mac.
With Snow Leopard in the works, Can someone tell me before I hit the buy it now button for the G5, should I try and take my chances of winning the Mac Pro? Its a 6-day listing and its right now at 658.00 dollars. I expect that to probably go up exceeding 1500.00 which is really my absolute maximum budget, or should I purchase the G5 quad and then maybe after a few months, try to trade it up for the mac pro? Advice? Anyone?! I think 1099 for a G5 Quad is quite a nice price!

"but if you want to be ready for future apps and OS you should go for a Mac Pro" - I know, but my chances of getting the mac pro on Ebay, at least for now are slim to none. Although, I also bidded on one for $1000.00, while there is a 6-day auction on one, and the price is now at $350.00 something, I doubt I will win it simply because there are too many people out there that want one. So, my hope is that within a few months once I have the Quad, I plan to trade it up for a Mac Pro as the Quad G5 I am sure has a higher resale value compared to my G4 MDD dual 1.25 which I have currently and typing this on.
Also, according to the seller, there is no airport installed. My other question is this: Is there a PCIe option for airport extreme wireless, or can I just use the USB wireless adapter and forgo having to spend another 217.00(mac-pro.com) for part number: MA252G/A which is the airport card/runaway card combo?
I didn't really give attention to the leak problems, but you said some of the Quads have a liquid cooled leak problem?

  • Thinking of getting an iPhone - question on the GPS map application

    Hi,
I'm at the end of the contract on my Nokia N95 and am thinking of switching to an iPhone as the N97 doesn't really look up to scratch.
One key deciding factor is whether the iPhone maps application can pre-load maps prior to overseas travel, so I don't have to crank up roaming data charges. The Nokia software is very good in this respect - you can pre-load, plan your routes on the phone etc. before you leave, and not use any data charges for the maps whilst you are away. Can the iPhone do this, & navigate without going on-line?
    Thanks in advance!

No, the map application gets it's maps for google maps, which needs an Internet connection to do. There are no preloaded maps. There are turn by turn apps coming out soon that will require you to download map packs but nobody knows if they will need a network connection to work

  • Thinking about getting a new macbook pro, just a few questions first --

    Hey guys,
I've been a mac user for about 5 years now and I love them. I've had a white 2.0 c2d macbook for about a year now. I primarily used this macbook for work, and my PC desktop for occasional games. I was thinking about getting a mac pro to do some gaming since my PC desktop broke about 2 months ago, but recently I've been getting more expenses so my wallet has grown thinner. So now I don't really have enough cash to get the mac pro. I also can't sell the macbook for a mac pro because I need something mobile for work. What I can do though is sell my macbook and get a macbook pro.
My question to you guys is, how do you like your macbook pro as a desktop replacement? I have a dell 2407-HC monitor as well to use with it. Does it game well over boot camp? I know cider hasn't yielded good performance, so please stick to bootcamp reviews. I'm not looking at anything really really intense, as I don't really have time to do as much gaming as I used to, but it'd be nice if it could run the orange box (mostly team fortress 2), dawn of war dark crusade, assassin's creed (when it comes out), and possibly the warhammer online mmo or age of conan mmo.
The other question is whether or not I should wait for a new one. Macrumors says that it's been about 150 days, and the macbook pros are updated every 180 days or so. I've already waited a few months since my desktop broke to see if the mac pro was going to be updated for penryn, but now the situation has changed, and now it looks like I might have to wait if I want a macbook pro. So, to wait or not to wait?
Any other opinions are welcome as well. Thanks.

    What's the beneift of buying 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 instead of 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Benefit of the QUAD core and the BASE UNIT 13" is extra cores for "heavy" photo and video editing and dedicated graphics
On 95% of things you wouldnt notice a difference, web viewing, typing, youtube, etc. Simple APPS

The 2.6 is DUAL CORE, not quad core.
    On the top model:
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

  • Thinking of getting a 15" MBP for FCPX... few questions...

    Hey everyone,
I am thinking of getting a MBP for FCPX.
I am new to Mac's and have always used PC's but with all of the trouble I have had with my PC's lately, and the fact that I have an iPhone, iPod, and everything seems to be moving to the "cloud" I think it is time to go with what seems like the superior product, an Apple Laptop
    So my question to you:
I am on a budget, but don't want to be regretting not spending enough in the long run.
I want to do some video editing and I have always used Sony Vegas in the past. With FCPX only being $300 now, that seems much more reasonable than the way FCP7 was previously priced.
What sort of system spec's should I shoot for?
I am reading that the minimums are as follows:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better.
2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended).
    OpenCL-capable graphics card or
Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later.
256MB of VRAM (512MB of VRAM recommended).
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
    OS X v10.6.8 or OS X v10.7.5 or OS X v10.8.2 or later.
    2.4GB of disk space.
So if I got a 15" Macbook Pro (without Retina display... do I really need the Retina?) here are the specs and my questions:
2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz Or should I go for the 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core?
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GBI figured this would be a good upgrade from the 4GB of RAM
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpmATA versus SSD? What size do you think?
MacBook Pro 15-inch Glossy Widescreen DisplayAre the high-res glossy or anti-glare any better? Is the regular screen pretty easy on the eyes?
Any other tips or suggestions for what to get? I want this to run as smoothly as possible, and I want this to be a computer that will last me a few years. I am currently on year 5 of my laptop PC, so I hope that the Apple's are as good of a product.
    Thanks!

As Tony writes, try to get the faster machine if you can afford. fcpx needs: a fast hard drive, a fast processor and lots of memory (ram).
Just a bit of my own experience: I am presently working with fcpx 1005 on a retina macbook pro (15", 2.7GHz, 16GB ram, the faster video card, and 500GB SSD internal drive). I was waiting for a mac pro so I settled for this machine and it lives up to all my expectations. I am editing material in ProRes 1080p30 with a lot of processing (effects) and usually 4-5 layers. The machine performs better than I would have imagined.
    - Internal hard drive: of course the internal SSD hard drive helps but you can skip that if money is tight. Try and put a 7200 rpm drive, the price difference should not be so great and there still will be a difference.
    - RAM is vital: on a regular project, as soon as you use color correction and plugins fcpx eats all the ram it can get. I used to work on a 6GB ram macbook pro until last summer and needed to quit and relaunch fcpx constantly. Now I have 16GB in the new macbook pro and the memory-hungry situation is just slightly better. The performance of course is much better in the sense that fcpx tends less to forget things, to show the beach ball or to act erratically. All this is due to lack of RAM. So do not spare on that and put in the maximum your machine can take.
    - The speed of the processor will make a difference between smooth and less smooth performance, and render times of course.
    - fcpx, also, is now GPU optimized and a faster video card in the macbook pro will make a definite difference. Same as for CPU.
    - external hard drives: don't even think of editing on your internal drive. Think that all your system and apps are installed there, so you want to keep this drive from running hot and die prematurely.
Use USB3 or eSATA drive enclosures. With an adaptor expresscard (like sonnet) you will get a decent performance and be able to read several ProRes 422 layers and a lot of ProRes Proxy layers and not despair in front of a sluggish machine. (I just upgraded from eSATA to TBolt RAID. This also helps with hi-res material and when you load an event with a lot of video files - much faster display). But both usb3 and eSATA are quite fine. If you can try and use a dual-drive enclosure you will get a real measurable performance boost.
    - Screen: the retina is showing the images with a LOT better definition than the regular monitor. It is not too relfective. In studio, with a normal lighting arrangement it is fine. My other machines were all non-reflective and of course that's perfect. Stil the retina without question is better.
    What else… well good luck.

You have to activate a new iPod by either setting it up via wifi network that has an internet connection on to connect to a computer that has iTunes and an internet connection.
You can go to an Apple store or or to a friend's house if necessary

  • Thinking to get FIOS. Need Info on DVR

I have been renting a TiVo Premium with my RCN cable tv service. I am leaving RCN and thinking to get FIOS which is finally available in my neighborhood. But I love the TiVo. Anyone has any hand-on experience wth Verizon's DVR?
In particular, I am most concern with 3 things:
1 With the TiVo, using their software I can transfer recorded shows to my PC. Can the Verizon DVR do that?
2 The RCN TiVo has 2 turners, so I can record 2 different shows at the same time. I chat online with the Verizon sales people, they say all their DVR's are single turner but then they said I can "watch one show while recording another. It even allows for recording two shows while watching a previously recorded show." I asked him how that's possible with only 1 turner in the box but they didn't know the answer.
3 Can I expand the capacity with an external hard drive?

Question 1:  No, not directly.  You can however copy material recorded on the DVD in real time to another recording device (e.g., a DVD-R device).
Question 2.  The VZ DVRs also have 2 tuners, not one.  They operate in the same way as the TiVo you described.
Question 3.  The latest VZ DVR units support an eSata external drive (evidently 2 TB max).

  • IPhone 3G - thinking of getting one but... what are the potential issues?

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 3G because:
    1. I've been writing iPhone apps with a friend of mine (already have two in the app store) and I think I'm probably the only iPhone developer in the world who doesn't actually own an iPhone himself. My friend and partner in this venture has worked extra time doing actual testing on her original iPhone (and we've had other beta testers too), but there is only so much I can do in the simulator. I can't develop multi-touch or accelerometer features without my own device. And I feel I shouldn't put the entire hardware testing burden on her.
    2. I like the iPhone browser and the ability to use apps and a lot of other aspects of the iPhone.
    3. I live in Japan, and switching from my AU cell phone to the iPhone is actually a bargain here. There is no money down, and the payment plans start at like $25/month to a max of about $68/month. So it's actually cheaper here than in the U.S. Even adding in the $10-$15 extra charge for 24 months until the phone itself is paid off, it's no more expensive than my current cell phone. And I can keep my current phone number.
So it would seem to be a no-brainer. I should just walk over to my nearest Softbank store and get one, right?
The only thing holding me back is this - every time (and I mean every single time with no exaggeration) that I have ever purchased an Apple portable device, including every single one of my many MacBooks and MacBook Pros over the years and the iPod nano 3G I bought last year, have had problems that needed immediate care and replacement or servicing and, in the case of the iPod 3G that awful "tilted LCD" problem that after 3 exchanges I had to have the consumer affairs office in Tokyo arrange with Apple for me to get a refund on.
I love the systems, I am using my MacBook Pro right now as I write this message (already been repaired twice and the trackpad is acting funny again - glad I have AppleCare), but I dread the mental stress of dealing with getting my new out-of-the-box Apple products fixed. I feel they have quality checking problems with certain of the product lines.
I just know that there is going to be something really annoyingly wrong with the iPhone 3G as soon as I turn it on - like obviously dead pixels, or a tilted LCD like with the iPod nano 3G, or some weird color discolorations, or something loose and jiggly like with my MBP battery cover or ... I don't know... something. It's just happened too often with me to not be wary.
So my question is this. If the Softbank store lets me turn on and check out the iPhone before buying it, what are the things I should look out for?
Are there common, well-known issues with the iPhone 3G that I can check for, similar to the tilted screen issue on the iPod nano 3G?
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
I would like to get an iPhone. I just want one with no problems out-of-the-box.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    doug

But if it is something more subtle like "the colors seem wrong" or "the screen is not set straight" it will take more arguing. And I can't stand arguing about stuff like that just to get a good phone.
So... What were the problems you had with your phone?
Well the only reason I got the IPhones was because it was a birthday gift,And the first phone I got was the 16G in white so when we got home My screen was jumping so I said okay maybe if I power my phone off and than cut it back on maybe it will started to work a little better,While it didn't I just made thing worse My screen was only jumping it wouldn't come back on after that,So I was so mad cause we had to drive a 138 miles to get my phone and than my cousin came over and she have the same phone I had just got.But her phone look like she had it for some years the white on the back of the phone had turned a off white.
So we had to drive other 138 miles there and back for me to get other phone and when I made it to the Apple store I didn't know you suppose to call and make appt before you come up there about your phone. So I'm standing up there telling them that I just came yesterday and drove a 138 miles here and back and I just had to turn around and do it again today. So they went on and seen me and ask me what was going on with my phone. So I told them as they can see it was not coming on no more.
So they exchange my IPhone and I didn't get the same color due to how my cousin white IPhone was looking like,So I got a black IPhone instead.
So the new phone I got was working so good and than about two weeks later my phone would blink on and off and it would freeze on you during call's are anything. So you already know what I had to do again I had to drive other 138 miles there and back and I was not happy about that at all.So this time before I went I made appt that morning to come and they told me to come around 200pm but for me to try to be there at least ten minutes early. So I made it there around 145pm they didn't get to me still around 315pm.So when they final call me to go talk to someone about what's going on with my phone. They ask me for my receipt and I let them know I didn't have it cause they didn't give it to me cause yale told me I didn't need it cause yale was going to send it to my email address.
So they went to try to look up my email address,That took them other 30 minutes to find it,But they finial found it in there system. So they went on and exchange my phone again with no problem at all.
So this phone I got was doing so good, I really thought my trouble was all over still I saw a black line running down my screen of my phone. So I had to get on the phone with apple again so I can make other appt for the 3rd time,So I can go up there and bring this phone so they can look at it,Cause I thought maybe I was seening something are it suppose to be on my phone and I didn't know,But to come to find out it didn't suppose to be on my phone so they had to replaces my phone for the 3rd time.
So I bent haveing this phone That I got now about 3 months now and I got to tell you I went through **** and back to get this phone and it's really doing good really love the phone so much I'm so glade that I didn't give up on this phone because I was haveing so much bad luck with getting a IPhone I was about to give up but I am so glade that I kept trying. It really is a great phone to have it have so much on this phone I love it.I just hope I don't have no more problem down the line cause I don't want to go through this again.
I feel were you are coming from cause I wouldn't want nobody to go through what I went through try to getting my phone.
But I'M telling you,it might be worth you going through this at the end..The TV on this phone is so unbelievable I'M telling you,you going to love it.Before I go to sleep at night I listen to my i pod on my IPhone and I love it that's how I go to sleep at night are I might watch a movie that I have on my phone at night. It's a great phone to have all the way around I give it a ten.
And other thing you said you don't like to arguing sometime you just have to do that.you and me have so much in common cause I don't like that my self,I feel like why should I have to raise my voices to get my point a cross that's just crazy to me.
So how long do yale have to exchange something were you stay.

  • I am thinking about getting?

    a samsung-52" 1080p flat-panel lcd hdtv but i am wondering should i get it.

Good question, lcd vs. plasma.  Alot depends on lighting in the room.  Lcd is better for well lit areas, plasma is better suited for low light areas.  Plasma does process faster and I think has a better overall picture.  I spent may hours looking at tv's when I was recently replacing a 3 year old Sony Wega hdtv.  Although is was a tube tv the picture was amazing in hd.  Didn't care for the lcd due the image ghosting.  Basically if you watch close enough during picture with alot of motion you can see the lag in the movement wich gives you a fast shutter effect.  Plasma processed faster so went that route.  Purchased a Panasonic 50" 85u series plasma.  Nice tv and all but did not like the coloring.  Just returned it for the new 600hz panasonic plasma 50" tcp50g10.  Coloring is so much better, picture far better quality on standard and hd.  Also has new feature on picture settings, THX optimized setting (way nice).  Also can be hooked up to the computer for Viera Cast mode wich allows you to search through pictures, You Tube, set local and national weather, check stock markets.  Super awesome feature.  Not sure if this series is avail in 52" but I think you'd like the 50".  Would not attempt to mess around with any other series tv.  Regaurdless of your choice, Samsung has the best rated lcd and Panasonic has the best rated plasma.  If you have any other ?'s let me know and I'll be happy to answer.  I'm a home electronics freak and very picky about what I own in my home.

  • Does anyone know why I am getting a yellow question mark by my AS3 .swf?

I developed a few Actionscript 3 animations in CS Flash 5 to use in Cp5.  Instead of the green ball icon in the upper right corner of the animation, I am getting a yellow question mark like I did when with my Actionscript 2 .swfs.  The reason I created new ones in AS3 was to avoid any conflict.  Hmmm
The new ones I am trying to use are Moving Red Circle, Moving Red Rectangle, and Moving Exclamation Point.  The Green Ball items are from Cp5 Gallery.
    Thanks

Ah...that explains why you would be seeing these icons.
When Captivate's library opens, it goes through and checks the locations of the objects in the library to see if it still can connect to the source file locations.
I would say the way to get around this would be to have the path to all source files replicated on each machine you work on.  So if you set up a C:/Projects directory with exactly the same folder structure on each PC you use, the path to source files should remain the same.  But I think trying to keep all the files in three machines always synced up will be more trouble than it's worth, personally.

  • Thinking about getting an Iphone 3g

Hey guys, just have a couple questions concerning the iphone 3g
    Thinking about getting, two questions?
I've heard some negative press about the actual phone feature ironically. Has the call drop issue been resolved, or is that issue mainly due to your service area now?
Also, does the phone have a tendency to slow down massively if it gets close to capacity?
My old ipods have never really worked correctly in that regard.
Little skeptical b/c of these issues, any advice is appreciated.

Why you are thinking of buying 3G phone?
if you run a business and you need to access your emails on the go?
while talking on the phone? and while updating your website and you want to talk to your IT department? do online trading?
do you wanot make a multimedia call? (does ATT support this feature?) ive lived in Bahrain and that was one the first country to have 3G cellular network up and running around 5 years ago)
if these are not your primary usage then don't expect anything from a 3G phone as its just a 2 radio device which drains battery quick and you are okay with that too go ahead and buy iPhone 3G what i hate is people who don't understand what a 3G phone can do and what are its limitation come here or for that matter on any forum and whine whine whine till i feel like brk my leg by kicking their butt so hard

  • Thinking About Getting An iPhone??

I'm thinking about getting one but im not quite sure if it is for me.
I was just wondering if you can answer these questions for me:
Does the touchscreen ever stuff up?? Like go all funny like i no other touch phones do.
(this might be a stupid question to u) But how do you like pay for ringing and texting people. Is it like a normal phone where you use prepaid vouchers or does it only have credit card payment?
Thanks and im in Australia if that matters.

Like all devices, it has its little glitches from time to time, but overall its seems to work great...and I have the original iPhone...never had a real problem that couldnt be fixed by simply turning it off and on...
As for payment questions, you may want to contact Optus, Telstra or Vodafone...looks like they are the carriers in Australia.
(Scotland uses O2 as a carrier)

  • Thinking of getting a playbook!

    Hi
I am thinking of getting a playbook but have a few basic questions:
Can you link or bridge more than 1 bb phone to it?
Can you watch 'sky go' and download sky go movies/programmes on to it?
Can you use skype on it?
And what is the battery life time like?
Sorry for being so such a thicko but i dont want to waste £200 and i am a bb fan so would love a pb rather than a different tablet.
    Thanks
    Ian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I find the battery life to be great, it says 10 hours but a lot depends on whether you're using Wi-Fi, Bridging reading a book or things that keep the screen on for long periods of time. I usually get a few days or up to a week.
Sky Go says they'll have an Android out right about now, so with OS 2 it should work with Sky Go,

  • Thinking about getting first iPhone (the iPhone 5s).

Thinking about getting the iPhone 5s, this will be my first iPhone (always have been a Android user).
Can a bunch of you guys be OBJECTIVE PLEASE and tell me why I should get the iPhone 5s over the HTC One or the Samsung Galaxy 4s?
I have a iMac desktop. This is my main reason for getting the iPhone (beacuse of iCloud)...but I would like more information about the phone and how it compares with the other phones I mentioned.
                                                            Thank you.

There's no such thing as a 30GB iPod Classic. You most likely have an iPod 5th generation so it would probably be best to ask the question in that forum.
