Thinking of Going From Yosemite BACK to Mavericks!

Greetings All-
First of all, I'd just like to thank this community for being the most helpful group of professionals one could ever turn to in times of distress or need.
I have spent hours of time seeking to find why my wifes 15" MBP - which we upgraded to Yosemite, has been nothing but trouble ever since. The infamous "Spinning Colored Wheel" is a hourly sight along with a freezing system, and extremely slow processing! I have sought out everything I possible scenario and also backed it up in case I found something that erases all cache, cookies, etc OR brings me back to using Mavericks!
Looked into the typical Anti Virus / Malware software and if truly required, what settings to put MBP on for safer surfing & operation and to be honest I don't really know if I should be using the Mac Firewall and FileVault (or what Security settings should be ON vs OFF)
On my trusty 17" workhorse I stayed on with the 10.9.5 OS and have no issues of the sort thankfully. I also really didnt like the new layout of Yosemite while using hers but just cannot put a finger on what it is I don't like. My question is - are there any members who had troubles like these or simply didnt care for it and chose to return to Mavericks? And better yet - HOW easily can one convert their OS Backwards to a previous one too?
Thanks for any advice on these topics and hopefully I can solve her matters!

First, reverting to an earlier Mac OS X from Yosemite is not difficult if you have a TimeMachine backup of the system:OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version  If not, things get messier because you have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the Mac OS X version and then reinstall all of the applications.  Data will be lost unless you make a backup on an external drive before starting the erase process.  If her MBP came with Mavericks installed at the factory, you can restart holding the Command+Option+R keys (this takes a good internet connection) which puts you on the Apple servers.  Then use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then Install Mac OS X to get Mavericks back.  After that the issues are your applications and other data.
As to her slow performance, you can check what is running in the background pretty simply by getting a copy of etrecheck, from etresoft.com, it is free, and that will show all processes that are running and you can look for obvious culprits like MacKeeper, Anti-Virus software, cleaning software - the usual bad actors.   Latest version is: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
I have had no issues with the latest Yosemite running on an Early 2011 15" MBP, but I have a lot of memory and that usually makes a big differences.

  • Does anyone have any idea how to downgrade from Yosemite back to Mavericks?

I do not have time machine, and I feel like erasing the HD is too risky. Has erasing the HD worked for anyone? Any suggestions would be great. I really dislike the look of Yosemite, so if I could get it back to Mavericks it would be great.

Before embarking on this system downgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
If you had done any type of prior backup, your time to downgrade back to OS X 10.9 Mavericks would have taken minutes instead of hours or days.

  • Switched from Yosemite back to Mavericks, iPhoto issues

    I have a 2008 MacBook (13" Aluminum).
Yosemite/OS X made it run incredibly slow, so I took it to a Genius Bar to see what they could do. The Genius tried to re-partition, but this did not work.  Instead she re-installed Mavericks (and it's running much faster!)
I back up with CrashPlan and was able to restore all of my files.
Somehow I lost iPhoto in the transition back to Mavericks.  All of my photos are in a giant CrashPlan folder on my desktop.  If I re-install iPhoto, will it remember my old iPhoto folders and organization?  I have 10K+ photos on my Mac.

iPhoto only reads an iPhoto Library. If you backed that up, then restore it into the /Home/Pictures/ folder. iPhoto does not use a folder full of pictures, but you can import them into a new iPhoto Library.

  • After unsuccessfully updating to Yosemite, back on Mavericks. But now my Timemachine or system not recognizing hard drive.

After unsuccessfully updating to Yosemite, back on Mavericks. But now my Timemachine or system not recognizing the hard drive. Is there any way to manually locate or find the hard drive?

    Hi kruione,
If you are having an issue with an external drive not being detected by your iMac, I would suggest resetting the computer's parameter RAM. See this article for how -

  • HT201232 Is it possible to convert to Mavericks from Yosemite without a Mavericks backup?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro and recently downloaded Yosemite. Turns out this was a horrible idea and my computer cannot handle the new software properly. I want to revert back to Mavericks, which was running wonderfully with few issues. I have not done a backup, and just ordered an external hard drive to use Time Machine with. I was wondering if it is possible for me to revert to Mavericks if I only have backups of the current Yosemite files/settings. I am not worried about keeping apps and their data (the most important stuff is in iCloud) but am more focused on my files, which I know I can back up to the external hard drive. I want to know if I can actually revert to Mavericks without killing my computer. I'm a recent college grad and don't have a spare $2500 laying around to spend on a new computer, which would be the ideal fix (it's been slow for a while anyways). Help please!

If you have no TM backup with Mavericks but you updated to Mavericks from say Mountain Lion then go to the app store under purchases and see if it will show Mavericks.  You may be able to download and install.  Be sure to save your files first. You could do an internet recovery (command-option-R) boot and it will install what came with your Mac (e.g. ML) then you can then update to Mavericks from the your purchases it it shows up there.

  • I have recently downgraded my mac from yosemite to os mavericks but i want iwok apps which were free when i bought mac now why am i supposed to pay.

I was facing some problem in my macbook when i upgraded from os mavericks to new os yosemite. So I went to the apple store and they downgraded my macbook. Now after all the softwares removed i wanted to get pages keynote and pages in my laptop on which I have been working since so long. Initially i purchased them for free but now I am being asked to pay. What is the solution to this?

You cannot download the same Apps that you have on your iPhone. They are two seperate stores.
The store you have on your iPhone is the same for any iDevice (iPad, iPhone and iPod)
The store on your MacBook is only for Macs.

  • Yosemite back to Mavericks issues.

I just finished reinstalling Mavericks on my Macbook Pro after a brief trial with Yosemite.  I have lost am having trouble getting into iTunes and have lost my admin status.  I went through the terminal-reset password procedure but when I got to the options screen, I did not see any info regarding my user account or the Mac hd.  I was unable to select anything on that screen.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you erase the drive before reinstalling Mavericks? If so then when you started into the Setup Assistant did you create an admin account? Or are you erasing the drive and restoring from a backup?

Hello. I have a macbook pro (2013) and I got so caught up in the new Yosemite beta being released that I downloaded it without making a backup. I know, stupid. Is there any way to wipe out my computer completely and start over with Mavericks?

  • How to downgrade Yosemite back to Mavericks.

I have the problem issue with Ricoh printer after getting Yosemite
Because it doesn't compatible with Yosemite
Then I have no choice other than downgrading back to Movericks

Or look at the other Ricoh threads here to see if those provide a workaround.

  • Going From 2k Back to 4k

Ok here's my question. I'm about to cut together a music video for network television. My very first one. And they want me to give them back a 4k res version for the color correctionist. Ok, so here's the specs i can lay out to the best of my abilities. the music video will be shot on the Red Camera. Now i've downloaded all the proper codecs, and what not. And i'll be getting a copy of FCP7 exclusively for this, so, i just have to update some of the other codecs once i get it. Now, i just want to know, what are the proper steps for transferring the footage into fcp, which i'm guessing will turn it into 2k res, and then once i'm done with the cut, how do i bring it back out into 4k?
Thanks so much for the help.
    Jared.
And also, i'm fairly sure this is being sent to someone who is going to color correct it in either Color or Davinci, so if there's something specific i need to do let me know.

I'm sure there's a fancier way, but you can just transcode the source to 1080p (close to 2K but handles better) using duplicate names, cut the show, and then re-link the project to the source (instead of the 1080).
We used a similar scheme to cut HD long distance back in '04-06...

  • After restoring from TC from Yosemite to Mavericks, I lost my Parallels virtual machine.  Any way to restore?

My situation was that my older iMac met the bare minimum requirements to use Yosemite so I went for it.   It was super slow so I decided to go backwards from Yosemite back to Mavericks.
I booted in the internet recovery mode and restored from my TC backup.   Took a long time (like 9+ hours) for this process to run its course.  When it completed, all appears well except that it seems I've lost the virtual machines I had installed using the software Parallels.  This makes sense I guess as my hard drive was wiped to make room for it.  It didn't hit me that this would happen as when I upgraded to Yosemite it was working just on that part of the hard drive.  Just ran with going backwards (my fault) for not thinking that the entire hard drive would be wiped.
So, long intro to asking, is there any way to restore that virtual machine from a TC backup?  Not sure if those files are saved somewhere on the Mac or in TC to somehow restore?
    Thanks.

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Erase and format the hard drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then reinstall the OS. Use Setup Assistant to transfer from Time Machine.

  • Revert from Yosemite to Maverick

I downloaded Yosemite a few days ago and made the bone headed mistake of not backing up my files before upgrading to yosemite, my macbook pro won't start up normal without freezing a getting the spinning wheel. The only way I can get into my Macbook is to do safe mode start up. I've tried repairing the disk but no help. I want to revert from yosemite back to maverick, I don't have another Mac to get Maverick from to put on a thumb drive but I read somewhere that I could go to the app store and go to "purchases" and re download Maverick through safe mode, would that work? I also don't want it to delete my files if I do that.

You must first erase the hard drive and install an earlier version of OS X that will work in order to re-download Mavericks. So you need to install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. However, if that version preceded Snow Leopard, then you can reinstall Snow Leopard from the retail DVD and update it to 10.6.8. If your computer came with Lion or later pre-installed then do this:
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Downgrade from Yosemite using Time Machine

    Hi,
I am planning on downgrading from Yosemite back to Mavericks because of the fonts/resolution debacle, I am partially sighted and use the Accessibility function Zoom and the thin, grey blurry fonts are made worse by the magnification process  which means I am having great difficulty just doing simple things like reading emails and using Finder windows, I have tried checking the 'Increase contrast' option in Accessibility>Display and the 'Use LCD font smoothing...' option all to no avail, if only Zoom worked like 'pinch to zoom' in Safari (I use a trackpad).
Anyway my question concerns using a Time Machine backup to downgrade, I have two external HDDs one for TM backups the other containing my iTunes media folder which is also backed up by TM,  can I disconnect the iTunes media folder HDD before I restore from TM or will there be an issue if TM has to also restore the iTunes media folder ?
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thanks in advance
    Pete

If you upgraded to iTunes 12, there may be a problem with iTunes media if you didn't have iTunes 12 in Mavericks.

  • Yosemite revert to Mavericks with Time Machine

I had to revert from Yosemite back to Mavericks because some of my software isn't Yosemite compatable. I used Time Machine (and a Time Capsule) to restore. After about 12 hours (restore seemed to go fine) the iMac restarted but is now "stuck" with the gray screen and apple icon. It's been this way for about an hour. What should I do now? What should I have done differently? Thanks very much.

    Hi fairfaxdoc,
If you are getting a gray screen with the Apple icon at startup, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Reverted back to Maverick from Yosemite - extremely slow

I just spent an entire weekend reverting from Yosemite back to the previous operating system. This was the worst upgrade I have ever experienced with Apple. As it was, with Time Machine backup, it worked to restore but I lost files even though. I would like to know when will it be safe to upgrade if ever. I felt like a test-case for Apple.  I should have stayed with my system because it worked great before and very fast. This upgrade is not for everyone and I want to make sure people are warned. Some may experience nothing but good, but for me it was not!!
    my system: MacBook Pro
      Memory: 8 GB
    back to : 10.9.4
processor: 2.2 GHZ intel core 17
symptoms after upgrade to Yosimite: extremely slowness to crawling. Adobe creative software suite upgrades would not install and stalled at 42%
I fixed all that by reverting and using cleaner application from Adobe.
