Thinking of moving from O2 Broadband to BT : Opini...

Hi all,
I'm currently with O2 having been a customer with them for many years. I'm on a rolling month to month contract with them as I have never renewed since my previous contract expired last year. I've got my MAC having requested it last week and at the time O2 offered me free broadband for 12 months if I renewed there and then.
I'm unsure whether to stay or move with the upcoming sale of O2 over to Sky. As I said, been a happy customer for many years and its only recently I've had any hassles with speeds. In the evenings laterly from 18.30 onwards until about midnight my d/l speeds drop from a normally very good @16mbps to around 1-2mbps. This is becoming tiresome and despite having reported it to O2 Support they maintain there are no issues and that there is no congestion affecting me. Been getting nowhere with this problem so as you can understand I am reluctant to sign up with them for another contract at this time. So I've been looking at a move, perhaps to BT. My exchange details can be seen below along with my current line stats - my exchange looks to be getting FTTC in 2014 so I'll have to wait for that. Until then I believe I can get ADSL2+ with BT from my exchange so I'd like to aska couple of questions on not only that but on peoples experiences with BT if I may.
Firstly, has anyone else moved from O2 to BT and if so how did you find the experience and subsequent line speeds?. I'm of the understanding that I'll receive similar speeds with BT that I already get with my current O2 package?. Also, I assume since I'm on ADSL2+ with O2 at the moment that with BT's 'top package' I'll also be put on ADSL2+?.
We've been sent a letter by BT offering the 'top broadband package' for £11.10 per month for 18 months. This one:-
To thank you for choosing us, we've chosen you for something special. You can get our top of the range broadband package with unlimited UK evening and weekend calls for £11.10 a month, plus your usual line rental throughout.
Normally this costs £26 a month, so you'll be getting it for less than half price. You won't see this offer advertised anywhere. It's only for the handful of people we're writing to.
Here are some of the benefits that set this package apart:-
Unlimited usage. You don't have to worry about exceeding your limit or paying extra. You can download music, watch films and BBC iPlayer and play games - as much as you like.
The latest technology. You get our most reliable wireless signal ever to your laptop, desktop, tablet or phone, thanks to the latest Smart Wireless and 'N' Technology.
BT Home Hub worth £99. Your Home Hub is included. All you pay is £6.95 for delivery.
Free, unlimited wifi minutes. When you're out and about you can avoid expensive data costs by logging on with your smartphone or laptop at over 4.5 million hotspots in the UK and 3 million abroad - the largest wifi network in the world.
Free advanced McAfee Family Protection software worth £44.99, to help keep your children safe online.
Plus unlimited UK Evening and Weekend calls. You can chat away to family and friends every night and all weekend. Unlimited UK evening and weekend calls are all part of the package. And unlimited minutes to 0845 and 0870 numbers are also included within your calling plan times so you can ring companise like banks without worrying about costs.
Is that a pretty good deal?. Here are my current details, exchange and line stats:-
Many thanks for any replies.

Hi Cammy55,
I've moved your thread to the Bills & Packages board as it's more related to the BB&phone packages and hopefully you'll also get more of a response from the community members.
It terms of ADSL2+ and broadband speed, as long as your local exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded ( which it looks like it has ) then you will be able to receive the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12mbps / 20mbps) service with a upload speed of around 1.2mbps.
Your line attenuation should also be around the same, so with a line attenuation of 20dB your line is approx. 1.4Km long which I would have estimated a broadband speed between 17mbps to 20mbps on a good quality line.
BT Retail should also give you an estimated broadband speed figure when your order or use the BT Retail BB checker.
Hope that helps,
Cheers

Here is my experience with the two distro's. I tried gentoo before finding arch linux. I was looking for a OS that I could have more control over the setup, that was my criteria.
Gentoo fit that bill exactly. So I started in on the installation guide for gentoo. When I was done I rebooted my pc only to find that gentoo didn't install right the first time. Somewhere I made a mistake and things went ape sh*t on me.
My next attempt was at arch linux, again, I just started in with the installation guide and things seemed to go smooth, sorta like gentoo. All seemed well, but I did not get my hopes up. When I rebooted my pc after the install of arch I was pleasantly surprised to see it had booted to the command line. WOOT! I was hooked, what can be more easier then diving into something completely blind, a newb at that, and still come out on top with a working, fast, reliable system. Plus its bleeding edge, which just makes my day.
I am not saying one is better then the other, but I find arch linux to be right up my alley. AUR is one of the best features of this site. But, my favorite section is still the wiki. I have linked to this wiki plenty of time even for others using different distro's. The amount of knowledge in the arch wiki is a godsend for any newb like me wanting to understand linux. Gentoo has a great wiki, but half of what they say and discuss is way over my head ATT.

  • Is it possible to transfer your license to another country? I am thinking of moving from the UK to Canada

I am looking to purchase products but need to know if the license is transferable.
    Thanks

    Hi there
Creative Cloud subscriptions are linked to an Adobe ID for a specific country.
If you move, you can cancel the existing subscription under the UK ID and sign up again using a new ID with the country as Canada so you get billed correctly.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Has anyone moved from Sky to BT Vision - opinions ...

Hi. My Sky contract is up at the end of July and I want to move to BT vision.
I'm wondering has anyone gone through this process and what are your thoughts on the new service?
How did the transition go? How much are you saving? What are the call centres like (I know they have Indian call centres like Sky I've heard that you need to keep the STB on all the time. Is this true?
Also, does the router need to be near the tv? This wouldn't be possible in the place I live at the moment. Would a wireless bridge work?
Basically all I'm watching is Sky Sports 1 and 2 (I also have SS3 and 4 which I don't watch) and Freeview, plus I've got BB,HD + 2 pack, and I'm paying £63.50. Its just too much.
I'm hoping moving to BT Vision I could cut my bill in half.
    Cheers.

Many thanks for everyones replies they have been most helpful
I cancelled Sky last night and got my MAC code!  Should be disconnected at the end of July.
How long will it take from placing an order with BT to getting package and STB in the post?  I'm thinking of ordering at the beginning of July.
About the STB issues I wold rather turn it off.  It will be connected to an 8 way power adapter with amps and 50 inch tv etc all connected.  I really don't want to leave all that on standy when I'm out.   I never schedule record never and I don't mind waiting to for the box to boot up, even if it takes 5 minutes.
    Cheers.

  • Thinking of moving to iMac from PC, got a few questions

I'm thinking of moving to an iMac for my next computer, probably in the next 6 months or so, but I have a few questions I wondered if you might be able to help me with.
I'm planning on getting Parrallels Desktop and installing Windows. Now I know Time Machine takes backups every hour. But I was wondering if it will also backup not only the Mac side but the Windows side too.
For example, if I install a program on the Mac side, edit a file, delete a file etc, Time Machine will backup the changes on its next backup. If I done the same while running Windows, i.e install a program on the Windows side, edit a file, delete a file etc, does Time Machine backup these changes for the Windows side too.
Presently for my backing up purposes. I have a hard drive caddie which has a esata connection as well as a USB connection. I have a 3.5 inch 1 TB sata drive that slides in and out of my caddie by way of (for want of a better word) a cradle. I'm planning on getting a 3.5 inch 2 TB sata drive and an additional cradle so that I can have a large collection of backups.
Now with the hard drive caddie I've mentioned above, to use it on an iMac, I would only be able to connect it via USB. My fear with this is that it will be a lot slower at taking backups to what I am currently used to seeing when I have it connected to my PC via esata.
I thought about this and noticed the LaCie eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series on the Apple website http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H8875ZM/A/lacie-esata-hub-thunderbolt-series?f node=5f&fs=m.tsConnections%3Desata
From what I can gather, it would allow me to connect my current esata caddie up to it and it would increase the performance of it to Thunderbolt performance and also would allow me to make use of my current hard drive in the process. I was wondering if anyone has used this hub and if so, is the performance significantly improved. I thought that Thunderbolt would be a good and extremely fast way of taking backups. I will point out that I find that the taking backups every hour with Time Machine, for me would be a bit of an overkill, so I'm planning on just switching Time Machine off when I don't need it to take backups, and then switching it back on when I want it to take a backup. Doing this could result in larger backups than if I had it doing it hourly, so again I thought something that would give me Thunderbolt performance would be good for this scenario.
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

By default TimeMachine does not back up your Parallels virtual machine and if you think about it that's a good thing. Since the Virtual Machine is in effect a hard drive, just booting up Windows or launching a program changes the VM file as temporary files are created. My VM is 25GB so not only would TimeMachine be making a copy of the VM every hour that Parallels is running, it would be copying 25GB! Not good.
There are a number of solutions. On my desktop I use a different program to backup my VM each evening about the time I eat dinner. On my notebook I have a repeating reminder that asks if I've backed up my VM recently. As far files go, my solution is to save all my files to my Mac drive space so that TM backs them up.
USB is slower than eSATA but for day to day use, USB is fine for TimeMachine. The initial backup will be longer and OS updates will result in longer backups but otherwise....I have a USB drive connected to the computer I'm using right now. On most hourly backups TM is running a couple minutes and it doesn't require much bandwidth or CPU so the only time I really notice it running is I look at the drive light.

Do you still have the iphone? I know this has been an issue with phones that were lost or stolen, but if you still have your iphone try going into settings on that iphone and turn off imessage. See if that helps, certainly cannot do any harm.

  • TS4006 Just moved from Vermont to Florida, but I pad still thinks it is in Vermont, why?

We just moved last week from Vermont to Florida.  Our I phones know they are in Floida, but the IPAD still thinks it's in Vermont.  The Ipad is connected to our WIfi and working fine except for the location issue.

If you have the WiFi-only iPad your location is determined by the mapped location of nearby WiFi routers.
The WiFi-only iPad does not have GPS. Without GPS location-finding is done by using a Apple location database which contains the MAC addresses of routers and their physical location. A MAC address is a unique number which is built-in to all network devices when manufactured. Each router has a unique MAC address.
The Apple database is built and updated by Apple GPS-enabled devices (primarily iPhones) actually seeing routers and then adding/updating the router's locations into the database.
Note that to be location mapped, or to be used for location determination, a WiFi router does not need to be connected to a router, it just has to see the router. More precise location determination can be done if several nearby routers can be seen. When a router is moved from one location to another erroneous locations can sometimes be reported until the router's location is corrected in Apple's database.

We have just moved from MobileMe, where we had a 'Family account' (and we each have our own @me.com email addresses) to iCloud. We share the Cal and Contacts on our iMac. How do we sync to multiple devices - we each have an iPad and an iPhone, but with different accounts set up for mail. Mine syncs OK to Cal and Contacts, but hers doesn't. There must be a way! Please help.

According the this: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/transition.html, "After moving to iCloud, family member accounts are no longer linked to the master account."  You can share an iCloud calendar (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2690), but I don't think you will be able to share iCloud contacts unless you are signed into the same iCloud account on both phones.

I am seriously thinking about moving to the adobe Creative Cloud. My concern is that if my design business runs into hardship and I can no longer afford the monthly payments, what happens to my software and existing files?

    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
"If I decide to stop my membership, will I still be able to use my Creative Suite software and the other components of Creative Cloud?
When you cancel a month-to-month or annual membership purchased directly from Adobe or let a 3- or 12-month prepaid membership purchased from a retailer expire, you will no longer have access to the Creative Suite applications, other desktop software, and services that are components of Creative Cloud. However, if you saved your work to your computer, you will continue to have access to those files. You will also have access to the same benefits as a free Creative Cloud member, which include 2GB of storage space (reduced from 20GB), the ability to sync and store your files, access to a free 30-day trial of the desktop software that has not already been installed and provisioned as part of your paid membership, and access to the free level of services included with Creative Cloud."
Having said that, if you  maintain a perpetual license, you will have to comply with the new Adobe one-version-back upgrade policy.
So when CS7 is released, you must upgrade in order to qualify for upgrade pricing for CS8. Likewise when CS8 is released, you must upgrade in order to qualify for upgrade pricing for CS9.
There is of course nothing mandatory about upgrading but bear in  mind that you can no longer skip a couple of versions and get up to date every 5 years or so at upgrade pricing. You'd have to pay full price for the new suite all over again.
So it's a matter of costing the various options out over a 3 or even 5 year period and budgeting for it.
If you're running a design business, you perhaps also need to consider whether the Adobe software design tools are mission critical or not. Will your other expenses exceed the US$600/year required for the Cloud?

  • Moving from MS SQL 7 to Oracle 8i

We are thinking about moving one of our client/server applications from MS SQL 7.0 to Oracle 8i. We know that we will have to change some of the datatypes in the database. But will there have to be a major rewrite of the backend code (stored procedures, triggers, views, etc...)? Does Oracle 8i support SQL or just PL-SQL and JAVA?

Thank you all, at the end, i have fixed the problem. It seems root cause of the problem is my regional settings.
I have completed to transfer my Sql schema to Oracle with errors. Migration Wizard gives errors in the stage of creating relations. It is something like that,
Failed to create foreign key: ORA-02298 Cannot validate - Parent keys cannot find
I have also tried to migrate my sql data but when the wizard finishes running, a large amount of my data is also lost.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

  • Moving from Amazon to Azure ?

Hello , we are thinking of moving to Azure from Amazon.
Our application is build using Delphi XE7 ISAPI , so we have our program.dll  doing all the work.
    www.domain/isapi/program.dll?key=xxxxx&id100
In background we are using Mysql (Can easily change),and a lot of html templates with tags not visible to site but visible to the dll. we also use S3 for holding images a.s.o
On amazon we are using windows 2008 server and IIS.
So we would love to use Azure "websites" , because it seems so easy  and not "cloud service" if possible , I have read some books for Azure but still I am not sure if we can use websites or not.
As a start we have developed a dll file called test.dll  , and it will only return a string  "My web server", as you may understand we don't use visual studio.
For us I think directly updating azure on web portal or power-shell will be the solution.
Can someone help me define a web.config  or  other files to make it run on a websites  ?  or do I need to use cloud service ?
Are there any step by step documentation to make my dll work.
After set up , we have like 3 GB DB  2  to  4 webserver based on time in day and many GB of documents.
Awaiting your recommendation and hopefully a description how to setup.
    Thanks

    have a look here: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-migration-from-iis-server/
there is a link there on the web.config entries and likewise you might find it useful to actually run the migration tool to analyze your app further.

  • Time machine backup files disappeared after moving from Osx 10.6 to 10.8.2 .

I had moved from a 6+ year old iMac to a new one with 10.8.2

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I don't think that they have disappeared. They are just "hidden" in your Time Machine drive because Time Machine detects your old backups as for a different Mac than the one you are using right now.
In order to see your old Time Machine backups, read > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html

  • Moving from nDS 4.1 on Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000

Having a problem moving from nDS 4.1 on NT 4.0 SP6 to Windows 2000.
First of all nDS 4.1 will not install on Windows 2000. It fails.
So I installed iDS 5.0 and everything went fine. Then I tried to import
users and it failed because of different schema. So then I tried to import
the schema. That didn't work or more accurately, I did not know how to do
it since iDS uses ldif files not conf files.
So I download and installed nDS 4.13. It worked and I moved the conf files
to import the schema and imported the users. Then the admin server service
quit working. The ipaddress had been changed, so I changed it back with
ldapmodify. Now the admin server service works, But I cannot connect with
the console to the server to make any changes.
    Please help.
IPlanet actually emailed me after I downloaded iDS 5.0 to offer assistance
getting it setup. So I emailed then back and explained my problems and
asked specifically what versions of DS are supported on Windows 2000. They
now don't return my phone calls and every time I get through to them they
pass me off to a new tech who says he will get back to me. Of course they
    never do.
So my question is how should I go about moving our Directory that is
currently running nDS 4.1 on Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. What version
should I run. How should I move the directory. I am unfamiliar with the
replication options and how to use them if that would be the best solution.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Ted

I think DS 4.12 or later supports Win2K.
After you installed DS 5.0, you should have run migration. This would have migrated all of your config and schema and data from your 4.x server to your 5.0 server.
"The ipaddress had been changed, so I changed it back with ldapmodify." Ouch. Exactly what did you do? It is very tricky to change the admin server port number and get the console to work again.
"replication options"? Do you mean migration?
What is the desired outcome of this process? To have a DS 5.0 running on Win2K?

  • Thinking about moving to Logic Studio

I am seriously thinking about making the move to Logic having watched all the online videos. LOOOVE those new amps!!!! I am pretty good now with Garageband, but think I am ready for more. So my question is has anyone tried to go to Logic? If you did was it hard to learn? Did you end up going back to Garageband in the end? If Logic is too hard to learn is there anyway I can add more cool amps-and sounds to Garageband without having to learn a whole new software.
    thanks!

    Frank,
These products have AU's that you use inside garageband. If you are looking for more than guitar sounds as in commercial synths you can try the demos of some frome this site.
    http://www.linplug.com/Download/download.htm
    iCresendo,
You can get demos of the guitar AU's I think. I don't play guitar so I have to use reFX Slayer2.
    http://refx.com/?lang=en&page=products/slayer2/summary
I also use Logic studio. I have found that the Lynda modules have helped make it easier to learn.
    http://www.lynda.com/
Lynda also has learning modules for GB that are pretty good also.
As far as moving from GB to Logic epress or Studio it depends on how much extra stuff your going to be doing to your tracks. I'm still using GB to make most of my tracks and then going over to Logic to master and add a few things. I really enjoy GB's quickness.
Whatever guitar apps (AU's) you buy for GB you'll also be able to use in Logic Express and Logic Studio. That is also true for commercial synths.

  • When moving from a list of threads view to a thread would be nice to jump to last thread read.

When moving from a list of threads being viewed to a thread, it would be nice to jump to last thread read or first unread thread.
Sometimes the threads get rather long.  Sometimes I haven't read a thread in awhile & I forget where I have left off reading a thread. It would be nice to have an icon to click on to move to your last read post or the first non-read post.
Seems this could be implemented in javascript without too much problem.  Might be a problem of when to get rid of the tracking data.
    Robert

This would be a new capability.   I didn't know you could jump directly to the last post in a thread by clicking on the posters name in your discussions.  However, I am interested in jumping to the first post that I haven't read.
Since writing my original post, I realize that software doesn't know what posts I have read. Lets say there are are 26 posts in a thread.  Lets assume these are divided into three pages with at most 10 items in a page:
    page 1 -- a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j
    page 2 -- k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t
    page 3 -- u, v, w, x, y, z
The software know that I have viewed the first three pages.  It doesn't know what post on the pages I have read.  The software would need to assume I have read all the available posts on a page.
Now lets assume that 12 more post were added.  This results in:
    page 1 -- a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j
    page 2 -- k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t
    page 3 -- u, v, w, x, y, z, aa,bb,cc,dd
    page 4 -- ee,ff,gg,hh,ii,jj,kk,ll
It would be nice if I could go to aa.
Jumping to the last post in the thread doesn't hack it. You have to spend a lot of time finding where you left off your reading.
Intesting, the list of your posts on your homepage usings the term Last Activity were as Your Discussions uses the term Last Post. The terminalogy should be the same & should act the same.  For the existing capability of going the the last post, I was thinking of Goto Last Post.
