Thinking of moving to Mac from PC--need iPhoto help

Hi All,
I'm thinking about getting my wife a Mac to replace her PC to get a better computing experience. She's not very computer-literate, and the frequent Windows lockups and other problems are causing much frustration.
She mainly works with digital photos, creating slide shows for family members to view on their macs, pcs, and tv sets. She currently uses Photoshop Elements 5 for WIndows for her work. It's my understanding that there are some differences between PSE5 for Windows and PSE6 for the Max. The Windows version has Organizer, which is the component that allows you to organize photos (tagging, etc) and create slide shows. The Mac version uses something called Bridge.
My wife spends most her time creating albums, slide shows, printing pictures and the like, but she only does light editing. I'm thinking that she may be better off with something iPhoto than with Elements. One issue we have with PSE5 is that it creates photo cds, not true dvds, and the quality of slide shows played on a tv set isn't very good. Another issue concerns how we'd do the conversion. I guess we'd lose the slide shows we've already created, but can we preserve the photo takes?
I'm really flying blind here, having never worked with a mac or iphoto. Any help or advice from this community would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,
David

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't use Bridge and iPhoto together. Metadata added via bridge will cause problems with iPhoto. To use Photoshop or PSE with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I noticed that in my download list there are only Windows downloads, and I'm moving from pc to mac. Do I need to buy everything again or.. ??

Um, I was hoping someone from the Store team would have answered. What you need to do is call Customer Service, and ask them to process the OS change. You will need to deactivate the serial numbers, uninstall the software, and send them a certificate of destruction for the Windows versions, and they should be able to provide you with keys for Mac.

  • Thinking of moving to iMac from PC, got a few questions

I'm thinking of moving to an iMac for my next computer, probably in the next 6 months or so, but I have a few questions I wondered if you might be able to help me with.
I'm planning on getting Parrallels Desktop and installing Windows. Now I know Time Machine takes backups every hour. But I was wondering if it will also backup not only the Mac side but the Windows side too.
For example, if I install a program on the Mac side, edit a file, delete a file etc, Time Machine will backup the changes on its next backup. If I done the same while running Windows, i.e install a program on the Windows side, edit a file, delete a file etc, does Time Machine backup these changes for the Windows side too.
Presently for my backing up purposes. I have a hard drive caddie which has a esata connection as well as a USB connection. I have a 3.5 inch 1 TB sata drive that slides in and out of my caddie by way of (for want of a better word) a cradle. I'm planning on getting a 3.5 inch 2 TB sata drive and an additional cradle so that I can have a large collection of backups.
Now with the hard drive caddie I've mentioned above, to use it on an iMac, I would only be able to connect it via USB. My fear with this is that it will be a lot slower at taking backups to what I am currently used to seeing when I have it connected to my PC via esata.
I thought about this and noticed the LaCie eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series on the Apple website http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H8875ZM/A/lacie-esata-hub-thunderbolt-series?f node=5f&fs=m.tsConnections%3Desata
From what I can gather, it would allow me to connect my current esata caddie up to it and it would increase the performance of it to Thunderbolt performance and also would allow me to make use of my current hard drive in the process. I was wondering if anyone has used this hub and if so, is the performance significantly improved. I thought that Thunderbolt would be a good and extremely fast way of taking backups. I will point out that I find that the taking backups every hour with Time Machine, for me would be a bit of an overkill, so I'm planning on just switching Time Machine off when I don't need it to take backups, and then switching it back on when I want it to take a backup. Doing this could result in larger backups than if I had it doing it hourly, so again I thought something that would give me Thunderbolt performance would be good for this scenario.
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

By default TimeMachine does not back up your Parallels virtual machine and if you think about it that's a good thing. Since the Virtual Machine is in effect a hard drive, just booting up Windows or launching a program changes the VM file as temporary files are created. My VM is 25GB so not only would TimeMachine be making a copy of the VM every hour that Parallels is running, it would be copying 25GB! Not good.
There are a number of solutions. On my desktop I use a different program to backup my VM each evening about the time I eat dinner. On my notebook I have a repeating reminder that asks if I've backed up my VM recently. As far files go, my solution is to save all my files to my Mac drive space so that TM backs them up.
USB is slower than eSATA but for day to day use, USB is fine for TimeMachine. The initial backup will be longer and OS updates will result in longer backups but otherwise....I have a USB drive connected to the computer I'm using right now. On most hourly backups TM is running a couple minutes and it doesn't require much bandwidth or CPU so the only time I really notice it running is I look at the drive light.

Hi, Lee. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
From this Apple Knowledge Base article:
Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed).  Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.
Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.
Note: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account.
Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

  • I think I killed my Mac, trying to install XP - Help, please!

I am at a loss. I cannot boot my computer in OSX, but when I try to boot it will the install disk....it comes to the first screen for what language, but then says OSX cannot be installed on this computer.
Perhaps it is still on the computer and that is why...but I cannot find it, though I am not that savy with this stuff. I tried holding down the option key and it just lists a windows start up disk...but that is not working as it just recycles trying to install windows xp.
    oh my, I am sick.
If anyone can help, please let me know!!

It is common when installing Windows for the install disk to have to reboot the machine to proceed to the next step. People familiar with Windows installation are not thrown by this - but a person new to the task might be confused.
In Boot Camp this can throw you off because it does not prompt you as to your job in the procedure.
If you don't do anything your Mac will boot back to OSX and Windows will remain un-finished. Here it is: if you are installing Windows and the machine closes down and re-boots, always hold down the 'option' key (or if you like - the 'c' key) so you can avoid an automatic boot to OSX - choose the 2nd hard drive icon. Windows always wants to boot back to Windows - to finish the job.
If you want to erase your Boot Camp error - just boot to OSX, open Boot Camp Assistant (found in "Utilities" which is found in the Applications folder) and choose to create one partition. Your OSX install will not be hurt by this.
If you want to wipe your computer completely (as if factory new) in order to install OSX from scratch then first install your OSX DVD and boot (holding down the option key or else the c key - then select the disk icon) - after language selection wait for the tool bar at the top to appear, select utilities > disk utility and click the hard drive (listed at the top of the list) and then click 'partition'. Then under 'volume scheme' select 'current' and create a 3 or 4 partition (takes a minute) and then undo this and create a one partition. This should blank-out the computer hard drive completely for you to start fresh - all will be erased.
If your Mac will not boot properly and you happen to have materials on your machine that you MUST save or recover, then you will need different help than I describe here.

  • I lost all email 6months and older in mac mail. Need Serious Help!

I lost all email 6 months and older in mac mail. In my in-box as a well as all other folders I created. I expected that the mac email software would keep all email as it did for me in when I used to use Outlook. As well I thought I was covered with the Time Machine I have installed. Well.....The Time Machine that I was aggressively encouraged to buy apparently doesn't back up email. If it does, I must need some secret decoder ring to unlock where it is. I need serious help. I lost months of professional and personal data. I need to fix this immediately and find some way to get my email back. Please help.

In March when I upgraded to Lion and iCloud I also experienced a similar problem (cluster of problems) which was solved by a password reset (conforming to new requirements) for my Apple ID. I'm glad to see that many nice people contributed and your primary problem is fixed.  My comment is on your Quicken problem.
Your data inside Quicken 2004 is on borrowed time.  In the process of researching personal budgeting apps I found many reports on the web that indicate Intuit as a company is scaling down Quicken (desktop) development and its future attention to the Mac platform will be minimal.
Did you know that Intuit is behind Mint.com?  You may be hesitant to put your financial data "in the cloud" and I may be being sheepish, but.. bbaaaa, bbaaaaa, the cloud is where it's going.  I know first-hand want a pain in the arse it is to customize an app to your liking.  I spent several hours on Mint.com setting up categories and tagging transactions.  It's tedious. I didn't look because I wasn't a Quicken user, but perhaps Intuit was nice enough to provide a data conversion path for Mint.com.  It is worth a look.
My second suggestion is to scour the web for a hack solution.  You can't be the only person who is facing this problem.  Quicken was very popular.  I just bet someone has posted directions or some code for exporting the Quicken 2004 data and manipulating it for something else.
    Good Luck.

  • Loosing raw data size when moving album pictures from aperture to iphoto 08

I have all of my Raw files and pictures stored on Aperture using versions in album format. Would like to use iphoto 08 only for tranfering files to web gallery. Yet every time I try to move files (ie drag and drop) from my albums (my versions) the file size diminishes therefore defeating the purpose since i'd like to have high quality images on my web gallery so others can download. I've tried clicking preferences to "copy files" into iphoto08 as well as leaving it unchecked but still the image file size goes from 2mb to 330 kb. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? I guess I could export the raw files from the masters yet it seems this would be awkward when working with pictures from different sources. HELP ??

Actually this is an Aperture issue since this problem only occurs when I export and then import files from aperture into iphoto 08. When I import files off a disk or external compact flash disk directly into iphoto 08 and then upload to the web gallery they retain the same file size yet the files that were brought over from aperture somehow loose there size once they go to the gallery. Interstingly enough the file size of versions brought over from aperture appear to remain in tact in iphoto but drop off once on the web???? Does this have anything to do with Versions as reference files...but if so how does one retain the chaanges made in aperture to a master file and export it to iphoto 08 and then on to the web and still retain some semblance of file size??? Note I already did enable downloading prior to uploading to the gallery.. HELP!

  • Need iphoto help please

Hello. I am currently running 10.5.4 on my 1.8ghz single processor g5. I just purchased a new mac pro, and I would like to copy my photos from my old iphoto to my new iphoto. (I do not have the new computer set up yet—I would like first get some ideas on the best way of transferring/backing up).
I have a little bit of an issue. I think I screwed around with my iPhoto folders a little because I changed the location of my photos to my external drive and I think I may have messed around with the folders. In my "pictures" folder, I have three main folders. I think I created the first two separately for some reason—maybe as an attempt at a backup last year?
    1. 2001-2006 photos
    2. 2007 photos
    3. iphoto library
Basically, I have currently have over 10,000 photos in my iphoto library. I was hoping to archive some of the older photos so that I do not have to transfer all of the 10,000 photos to my new computer. What is the best way of doing this? I still want to keep the old photos, but I figured I would burn them on a DVD to archive, but I no longer want them in my iphoto library. I want to be able to pick and choose which photos I am going to transfer to my new computer. In iPhoto, I have all of my photos categorized into folders, but it doesn't seem to categorize them like that in the iphoto library (it does it by rolls?). It also contains folders called "modified," "originals," etc. Any idea how I can for example choose that "Tara's Wedding" Photo folder can be archived, but not transferred?
I apologize for the lengthy post, but I want to be sure I am getting my point across. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

    1. You need to do this in iPhoto and not through the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder. The changes you make in iPhoto will be reflected there but Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    2. Simply: Any photos, albums or folders of albums you want to archive: Select them in the iPhoto Window and use the Share -> Burn command to burn them to disk. This will make a “mini” iPhoto Library on the Disk so that if you need to access these files popping the disk into your Mac means it will show up in the iPhoto Window and you can drag them back to your Library there.
    3. Having archived the pics (and then tested the disks to make sure that all is well) put the pics you no longer want into the iPhoto trash and empty it (iPhoto Menu -> Empty trash. Tip: Do this in batches of about 100 or so. Iphoto baulks at trashing too many pics at a time). This removes the pics from the iPhoto Window and the Hard DIsk
    4. To move the Library to the new machine: Copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures Folder to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine. Then launch iPhoto. That’s all. +There’s no importing involved+.

  • Just moved to Mac from Windows, so far biggest headache is the way folders are treated. I manage several very large websites and involve a lot of files within folders and I need the folders to show the date the last file inside it was changed?

In my FTP client I can click to sort by date modified which is fine if you are in a folder and then it shows the file dates correctly - but any folders within the root folder don't they seem to display randomly all together at the bottom of the list and it is a nightmare trying to find what folders have files in them that have been changed.
Is there any way to get the folder to register the last date of a file within it that was modified?

I dont know the answer yet, but i have noted what appears to be a bug in 10.9 in how it handles folder dates.  Right now i am seeing folder modified dates changing randomly ot "today" - whatever date the parent folder was opened.
In the past my folders "modified" date was always the same as the last modified date of the items within.  But this only moved down ONE level - if a subfolder's entries were updated the "gradfather" folder did not update.
But now severa people are reporting random, incorrect folder dates. I hoep this will be corrected soon, but who knows?

  • [MAC newbie]: Concerns about moving to MAC from Windows

    Hello.
I want to upgrade my PC.
I'm having thoughts of moving from Windows to Macintosh (Mac Pro), but there are a few things that concern me.
I use my PC to do these things (in a more or less exact order):
    1. InDesign, Photoshop, Quark XPress
    2. Internet browsing
    3. MS Office
    4. Video games
    5. Music, movies.
Now I know I can do all these things on a Mac as well, except solving the troubles with Video games.
My PC upgrade would cost me around 200 EU max (video card + some ram), while the cheapest Mac Pro I found on Amazon is about 600 EU + shipping taxes.
Could anyone tell me what is it that Mac Pro desktop or Mac mini desktop have that would make me invest in it instead of simply upgrading my PC?
Is there a "secret ingredient" about those MAC machines or is just a simple overpriced hype?
Thank you for taking time reading this and for any help.
    Best regards,

    Well, instead of
    http://www.apple.com/why-mac/better-software/
it could just as well look like
    ww.microsoft.com/why-windows/better-.../
Of course, and so you should in order make a balanced judgement. You also need to look at the inevitable costs of replacing/updating your software applications if you change to a Mac.
If I was in your shoes I would stick with upgrading what you have, but I hope you end up with whatever works for you!

  • Moving to Mac from PC: Question about using external HD

I am trying to figure out how I will move my files from my PC to my new iMac when I get it. This would include favorites/bookmarks, music, document files, pictures, etc. I was looking for clarification regarding the use of an external HD as I have gotten different answers elsewhere.
Can you use the following process?
    1. Connect an external HD to my PC and copy my files to the external HD. I assume I would need to format the HD on the PC and that it woudld be FAT32.
Note: My PC has USB 1.0 and a firewire card.
    2. Connect the external HD to the iMac and copy my files from the HD to the iMAC. Can the iMac recognize a drive as FAT32?
    Related questions:
I have not purchased an external HD yet. If the above is possible, anything I need to consider in the type of external HD I purchase?
After I move the files to the iMAC should I reformat the drive on the iMAC since it uses a different format?
    Thanks for the help.

Connect an external HD to my PC and copy my files to the external HD. I assume I would need to format the HD on the PC and that it woudld be FAT32
If the drive is 32GB or more, you cannot normally format it to FAT32 on a Windows XP or Vista machine. If this happens, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder on the Mac to format it as MS-DOS, or choose NTFS on the PC.
Connect the external HD to the iMac and copy my files from the HD to the iMAC. Can the iMac recognize a drive as FAT32?
    Yes.
After I move the files to the iMAC should I reformat the drive on the iMAC since it uses a different format?
If you only want to use the drive on a Mac or formatted it as NTFS as noted above, yes.

  • I just moved to Mac from Windows and my desktop is still visible when I use Photoshop.

Most people who switch from Windows to Mac find it unsettling to see the desktop when they start Photoshop. This is the way Mac works and has since the beginning. What you are looking for is the Application Frame. This is a new feature in CS4. You can find it towards the bottom of the Windows menu.
If you are using a version prior to CS4 there is no Application Frame. You can change your desktop to gray; many do this; or you can hit the f Key for Maximized mode and once more for Fullscreen mode. This is the closest to the Application Frame in CS3 and earlier versions.
CS3 is the only version with the Maximized mode, but all have the Fullscreen mode.

I dont know the answer yet, but i have noted what appears to be a bug in 10.9 in how it handles folder dates.  Right now i am seeing folder modified dates changing randomly ot "today" - whatever date the parent folder was opened.

  • Hard drive removed from old, dead mac. I need your help!

So the logic board failed on my 2006 15" MacBook pro. Apple were charging £500 to replace the board, so I've decided to get myself a new MacBook. At the Genius Bar, while we were discussing how I could go out fixing the laptop, the genius was kind enough to remove my hard drive for me. He explained that there are simple USB cables you can buy that literally connect to the loose hard drive one end, and pop into the USB of the new mac the other. My first request is can anyone link me to a cable to buy (preferably uk). Every time I search I get external USB hard drives. The second piece of help I need is how I go about restoring some old files. I want everything as clean as possible; no migration type processes, just drag and drop. Once this is done, I have some worries about connecting my iPhone and getting things to carry on as normal (without losing apps and photos).
    I appreciate any feedback.

The driive enclosure required will be the SATA enclosure. (The IDE would be for a much older machine.) The best policy would be to take the extracted drive with you if you are shopping in person; that way the tech help on site can identify exactly the model needed. Just one word before opting for a FireWire enclosure: the newer Macs have FireWire 800 only, no longer FireWire 400 ; your old 15" had both ports but the new Mac will have only 800. That means you might need an adaptor cable 400 to 800 if the enclosure is 400. There will be no similar complication if it is  USB only. The advantage of FireWire is speed and Mac compatibility.
Once you have this bit of kit, then you are ready to tackle the main task of Migration or simply copying to the new Mac.
