Thinking of purchasing Time Capsule but need to know a few things

I currently have the Airport Extreme (no time capsule yet) and share the internet with a roommate. Each of one us has a mac and we are currently we each backup our files to an external hard drive manually - it's a pain I know....So now I'm looking at Tim Capsule. I like the idea that the backups happen automatically, incrementally, and best of all "wirelessly". Since we are two individuals who have personal files, I don't want no one but me viewing my own backups and same goes for my roommate. Do we get two Time Capsules? If so, how do we share one single internet line? If only one Time Capsule, how do we both backup our own files to one Time Capsule and does the other user have access to my files? Please help and advice, we would totally appreciate your feedbacks.
Thanks!

For backups, Time Machine will create a separate backup for each of your computers. You each can only access the backups from your instance of Time Machine on your computer.
For Internet, the Time Capsule is really no different from your current AirPort Extreme ... both of you can access the Internet simultaneously.
For using the Time Capsule as NAS device to store files outside of backups, you can establish three types of file access: 1) With Base Station password, 2) With Disk password, 3) With Accounts. Based on both your requirements, the last type would best serve those requirements.

Thinking of purchasing Time Capsule.... Can I access my documents saved on (Home Network) Time Capsule from another Network??? For instance, I can access my documents saved on MyBookLive (which is connected to my wifi) from ANY wifi connection... Like when I'm at school I can download documents stored on my MyBookLive at home.... I love this feature... But I would prefer to keep my products apple... So my question is can I access my documents from ANYWHERE with Time Capsule???
    Other products I have: MacBook (2009 limited edition it's aluminum) two iPad2 (2012) iPhone 5 (2012) two iphone4 iPod touch (2010) iPod Nano (2011)

Remote access to TC is allowed by BTMM and iCloud service.
Not for ipad or iphone.. only the Macbook although I think people have some work arounds..
NOTE. Your school firewall should block it. If I was still working in network admin I would. ie you are risking the whole network to get access to files unchecked for viruses.. and please don't just say Macs don't get viruses, you can still be the source of the infection even if you don't suffer the disease. Just a carrier.

  • IMac connected to Time Capsule but doesn't know it

The strangest thing is happening right now. About an hour, I suddenly lost internet connectivity. One minute, things were fine, so I took a break. About 30 minutes later, I cam back and no internet. I tried leaving then rejoining the network. It worked, but didn't. The iMac logged on, showed it was connected, but wouldn't surf the web. So I checked on Macbook, just to see if my DSL was down. Nope, working fine on the Macbook. Went back to the iMac and saw a "!" in the wifi indicator. Upon closer inspection, I realized the iMac couldn't even see my Time Capsule (Airport Utility found no devices), but was still somehow logging in and getting a DHCP address. Then it would promptly lose it. I've tried restarting the Time Capsule, the DSL modem AND the iMac. None have fixed it. What's stranger, Airport Utility on my Macbook shows the iMac as connected (the MAC address is listed).
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I've never seen this before. The iMac is connected but doesn't know it. I have made no changes that would cause this. It was all of the sudden.
Thanks in advance (and yes, I give stars).
PS It is worth noting that I have 2 iPhones, an iPod Touch, a Macbook and a PC laptop as well. All "see" and connect to the wifi network, browsing the internet just fine. The iMac refuses to acknowledge the connection, despite the fact that it is active.

Since you previously tried just restarting the iMac, what you did differently this time that worked was:
Shutting down (powering off), then restarting.
Resetting PRAM. Not sure if you did this because it is not the same as unplugging the iMac.
Resetting SMC (power management). This IS basically unplugging and reconnecting power cord.
The hardware involved in wireless networking may have needed to be reset. One of the above probably reset it. These are the formal procedures for resetting PRAM and SMC.

  • HT4623 Trying to update to iOS7. Update was successful, but needed to do a few things next. Went through steps, then phone states update iCloud settings. Phone has been trying to update all night and today without success. Is there anything I can do?

Trying to update to iOS7. Update successful except a few more things to do. Now it is in "updating iCloud settings" and has been updating all night and day. Do not understand why it is taking so long? Any suggestions?

    Try a Hard Reset.....
Press and hold the Wake / Sleep button AND the Home button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen, it can take 10 or more seconds.  Ignore the swipe to turn off message.

  • I'm going to Africa with my macbook and need to know a few things?

    Hello,
I'm off to Africa on friday.
    1) I have just received an email saying that plugging my laptop into their electricity may cause damage to it due to power surges? Is there any way I can stop this happening?
    2) I need find a dust proof very good case for my macbook pro 15 without retina if anybody knows any they can recommend?
    3) Are there any other ways of charging my laptop? E.g. solar or a power pack is available? Any suggestions would be fabulous from anyone who is very good with laptops.
Thank you and thank you for your time answering this question
    Alicia:)

for a case, if you are planning for rough treatment, dust, water...
    Look at the Pelican line.
    http://www.pelican-case.com/1095.html
This is ne of many they offer, this is brand most TV crews use. You can call them they have a ton of cases to offer, it depends on how it is going to used.
Something like this for power, this is a grey area to recommend as it depends on what the voltage supply is doig, the heavier duty, the more $$$
The solar charger you will have to do some research, I could,nt find anything that looked promising.
    Have a safe trip

I just purchased Time Capsule today.  I ONLY want to use it as an external drive.  I do not need it for Time Machine. I need to free up room on my computer. As of now, I can't even load updates. I can see the TC in my finder, but when I click on a file or video to drag and drop, I get message that TC can't be modified. Help please!

I agree with Kappy.. passing files and especially via wireless is slow as slow.
Just need to be sure your TC is the new AC model??
And the OS on the computer is Lion?
Have you completed the setup of the TC via the utility? You do still need to get internet via the TC so it has to be plugged into the main router..
Give us the full picture of the network.
Then we can help you get into it.. whether you should put your files on it is another question.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

I have an older white Macbook. It is supposed tohave "N" networking but needs to be unlocked. The software is supposed to come with the time-capsule, but I can not find it, also I checked with a friend who just bought an airport extreme and he can't find any software. Does anyone know where this software is located?

If you add another Time Capsule, you can have one or both Macs backup to that new device.
However, please note that it is not possible to have backups "carry over" seamlessly from one Time Capsule to another.
If you add a new Time Capsule, each Mac that is backing up to the new device will make a new complete backup and then backup incrementally after the master backup is completed.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • Wifi Working With New Time Capsule But Can't See It To Configure Settings?

I had an airport extreme but recenlty purchased an airport time capsule. When I initially plugged it in, by airport utlity saw it and it asked me to set up a password. But then I noticed there was no internet signal getting to the time capsule. We wound up replacing the DSL Router and now the internet is up and running. But now when I open the airport icon, the time capsule doesn't even show up. When I open the airport utility through finder it shows the time capsule but blocks me from accessing anything. So I can't go into any set up configuration for changing passwords, setting up guest network or setting up the back up to the time capsule. I don't see any downloads for a new utility for the time capsule, so I'm assuming it's the same as for the airport extreme? What do I need to do in order to be able access the configuration areas?

Reboot the TC.. it is hard for poor OSX to find it.
    No luck.
Just press reset and start again.
Do a new clean setup.. please use all SMB names this time, short, no spaces and pure alphaumeric.
Ensure ipv6 is set to link-local on both the wireless and ethernet if you use it. Wireless is essential even if you use ethernet you cannot do setups without wireless.
    Still got trouble??
What is the OS on the computer and therefore version of the airport utility.. you will have huge problems with Mavericks.. as that is its nature.

  • Does it create a problem if I only connect the backup external drive every few days for use with Time Machine?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

After a near miss with my 4-year old MacBook, I finally wised up and purchased a WD My Passport for Mac to back up my hard drive. I connected the Passport today and have performed the first full backup.  However, I do not wish to keep it permanently connected to the laptop.  Does this create a problem if I only connect the drive every few days?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

    Hello,
I don't think it'll cause a problem, but I'd disable/turn off Time Machine before disconnecting, then turn it back on after you connect it again.

  • Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when i enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username

Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when I enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username. how can i prevent this from happenning. I really need to access all my accounts and dont want it to save automaticlly.

Why have 5 accounts if you need to access all of them.. just have one account?
Sorry I cannot follow why you would even use the PC to control the Time Capsule. Apple have not kept the Windows version of the utility up to date.. so they keep making it harder and harder to run windows with apple routers.

  • Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
    What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.

I connected an external hard drive to the Time Capsule but can't get it to work.

And are you using a powered USB hub? The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you almost always need to use a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
