Thinkpad 430u Windows 7 - Public Network - Wireless router is not assigning IP address

Hello,
My computer knowledge is limited, but I have a chronic issue when attempting to connect to public wireless networks, ie a coffee shop:
When I attempt to connect, the laptop identifies the public network as an Unidentified Network and although it "connects" it says No Internet Access. Normally, when I connect, I would be prompted to selected Home, Work, Public and this does NOT happen.  In the Network and Sharing Center, under the heading "View your active Networks" it says Unidentified Netowork, Public Network; Access type: No Internet Access, Connections: Wireless Network Connection (name of network).  The words "Public Network" is NOT a hyperlink and cannot be clicked on.
When I run run cmd and check ipconfig I find that the wireless router is not assigning an ip address to my laptop.  i then input ipconfig/releasei, and ipconfig/renew.  I then receive and error saying "An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: The operation was canceled by the user."
I have turned off my firewall.
My smart phone can connect the the internet with no problem and the other laptop users have no problem either.  This indicates there is no problem with the wirless router itself, but is some kind of setting or something that needs to be adjusted on my end.
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.86.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: n/a
Please, any help is appreciate.  This is a chronic problem any time I link to public networks.
P.S. I have no problem connecting to the internet in my own home
Thank you!!

Sorry, forgot to include: it's a 2Wire 2701hg-b Residential Gateway.  I'm unsure how old the model itself is--it was just given to us by AT&T (it's the model they use for their U-verse service).  I checked today and the firmware is up-to-date.
Thanks.

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Will Not Assign a Network Address

A Linksys WRT54G router will not assign a network address when I access the router using a Linksys WPC600N wireless card. I have the same problem accessing the router with a TRENDnet TEW-621PC wireless adapter. Both wireless adapters are assigned network addresses when I use other wireless routers. Also, I have no problems being assigned a network address when I access the WRT54G router in question using an old 2WIRE 802.11b wireless card.
I have tried "Repairing" the connection, I have used ipconfig to "release" and "renew" the connection. However, each attempt fails to have a DHCP address assigned.
I am a visitor at the work location with the connection problem, the router works for others without any issues.
    Thanks

Well in such case .... you can try few settings on the wireless adapter ....
If you are using WLAN monitor .....
Click start >> All programs >> Linksys wireless monitor >> Click on "Profile" >> Delete all profiles >> Click "New" >> Type in the wireless network name >> Click next >> Configure the rest of the wireless settings same as in the router ...
At last point it shows .... all the configuration settings ...reconfirm that  >> Click on connect ot a network & reboot the computer ...
After reboot see if it shows connected or not....
You can also use Static Ip in the configuration ....

  • Can connect to wireless router but not to the internet

Please Help, I have a WRT150N and I can connect to my wireless router by it will not connect to the internet from there, even though the internet, wireless, and security lights are lit up. If I plug a cord into the back of the router and then into my computer, I can connect to the internet, but once I disconnect the cable, I can still find and connect to my wireless router, but it will not connect to the internet from here. Under access it says "Local Only", I have the security type set to "Shared" under the security properties, and set to "WEP" with WEP key #1 entered. I have spent about 4 hours working on this problem now and could really use some help. Thanks.

Type ipconfig /all in command prompt(cmd.exe) to see whether it displays valid and correct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS info. If not, take a look on these cannot connect to wireless network problem and using ping to troubleshoot network problem articles to get more ideas. Hope it helps..

  • WRT54G Wireless Router -- Do not have setup disk, what do I do?

I just moved into a new apartment and my father had an extra wireless router lying around but misplaced the setup disk. The only time I have ever set up a home network it has been with the use of an automated setup wizard. Is there any way I can download this software, or someone can give me step by step instructions on how to get this thing up and going?
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

You do not need the setup CD to install your router, you can configure it manually...

  • WRT610N V2 wired as 2ndary router to wired router, does not give IP address wirelessly

My WRT610N V2 is wired as 2ndary router to a wired router but it does not give IP address wirelessly to connected PCs.
It is getting DHCP IP address in the 192.168.1.xxx range from the 1st router, on its internet port, and issuing properly an IP addresses in the 10.10.1.xxx range thru its LAN port  when wired to a laptop.
But if I connect to its 10.10.2.xxx wireless network with another laptop, the wifi adapter utility software shows the laptop is connected, but the laptop is not receiving an IP address.  Please help in correcting this, as I need to use this router to give internet access wirelessly to guest laptops.
I know DDWRT does this kind of bridging with secondary DHCP when both routers are connected wirelessly, but it seems to me that if the 1st and 2nd router are wired together, DDWRT shuld not be needed for 2ndary HCP to take place.
And 2ndary DHCP is indeed working for those laptops wired to the 2ndary Cisco router: seems to me it should be able to do it also wirelessly.

  • LInksys E1200 Wireless router is not responding after a while

Hi there, I have E1200 wireless router and it was working nicely for the whole last year with 2 mac laptops hooked up on it. About 2 months ago there were 1 mac,1 win laptop and a network printer. And again, it was working just fine at the beginning. I'm not sure when exactly it happened first, but now after working couple of hours internet gets off and router stops responding. If I try to reconnect to it from my laptop I just see an error message saying something about "Connection timeout". Also I don't know does it have something to do with the network printer, btw it's connected to the router via ethernet cable not wireless. Anyway, the only solution I've found so far is power off the router for a couple of secs and power it on again, which is obviously not a solution at all, it's annoying and not practical. The time it works fine before it dies is also not fixed, it might be even 10 hrs of working and sometimes only 1-2 hrs. My other suspicion is firmware. I upgraded it almost at the same time when new laptop and printer showed up. Maybe I have to downgrade it, but I couldn't find older version of it. It was HW v. 1, SW v.1.0.00, and now it's HW v.1, SW v.1.0.03. I'd highly appreciate if someone could help me out or at least show me direction where to dig in. Thanks.

It seems that router is intermittent. I suggest you observe your internet connection without the router which means connecting the computer to the modem (if you can) to isolate if your modem's internet connectivity is okay or stable. Upgrading the firmware to the latest is actually okay. Try to reset your router back to factory defaults by pressing its reset button found at the bottom for 10 seconds. When you do reset by the way, it will delete all the current settings that you have especially for the wireless. But you can take note of them before you reset the router. After the reset, you have to get the internet up and running again. You may refer to  the links below on how to get it up and running again for wired and wireless internet.

  • How do I restrict access to Wireless router (800 series) by mac address

I hope I'm in the correct area.
I'm trying to deny access to 3 wireless devices to the cisco 800 series wireless router
    The MAC address are:
MAC Address    IP address      Device        Name            Parent         State
    0014.6caf.410a 192.168.2.26    unknown       -               self           Assoc
    9803.d8ba.cd42 192.168.2.41    unknown       -               self           Assoc
    a4d1.d205.72e1 192.168.2.25    unknown
If this cannot be done is it poosible to assign the mac address to an ip address and then denying access to the ip address.
    Thanks
    Jon

    Hello Jon,
You should be able to do it either way. Best way would be by IP address so you do not even allow the host to associate with your AP.

  • Time capsule wireless router will not work

I have a Time Capsule that I use as a wireless router in my condo.  Our internet company was recently purchased by another company, and after the transition, I am not able to connect to internet wirelessly.  My condo is wired with active ethernet ports.  If I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, I am able to log in to the ISP's main page and connect to the internet without any problems.  However, if I plug my ethernet cable into the Time Capsule as I did before, I cannot connect.  Before the company bought the old company, I didn't have any issues.  I've called their Tech Support 3 different times about this and they tell me they don't provide support for my wireless routers because there are so many different types.  They suggested resetting the router password, but I'm not completely sure how to do that.  Is that different than my airport password?
I should also note, that if I pull up System Preferences and to the "assist me" feature under the Network option, it tells me that I'm connected.
Any help you can provide would be fantastic!  I'm at my wits end with this issue, as I connect a number of devices to my Time Capsule wirelessly.
    Regards,
    Jake

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Numbers on Wireless Router do not light up

I have hooked up my wireless router to my cable modem and my computer. I plugged the ethernet into the back of the router and the numbers do not light up. The internet and power light up but not the number. Also when I try to connect to my lab top through the wireless router it says I am connected but it will not allow me to open any web pages? Why is this?

Use this LINK as a reference and make sure your router is configured correctly with a PC hard wired (firmly seated) to the number one port of your router.  If you can not access your router go to this LINK and download the tftp.exe file for your routers model and try to flash the firmware.

  • Can't connect wireless due to "self-assigned IP address"

I recently switched from PC to Macbook. I cannot log on to many wifi networks I could previously access with my ThinkPad. The computer successfully finds the network and has a strong signal but will not connect. Under network status, I get a message that says something like "Your Macbook is connected to the wireless network but AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the network."
Ive tried various options but still no luck. This mostly happens in public Wi-Fi networks such as internet cafes, airports and Starbucks' T-Mobile networks. Thanks!

Can you connect to any wireless location? Or does not fail only in certain places? If you can't connect anywhere, it is your problem. If you can connect in some places but not others, it is their problem.
It wouldn't surprise me if there is some new, cheap vendor of wireless access points that doesn't do the network settings correctly and only Windows machines will connect to it.
You were a ThinkPad owner, so you weren't a typical PC user anyway. Most of them use PCs only because they are cheap, cheap, cheap. Is it 3.29 cheaper than a Mac? Buy it! Those people are now making cheap wireless access turnkey solutions. I have seen people like that before. Just because there are hundreds of millions of pounds of equipment depending on the software, or people's lives, doesn't mean they know how to do networking. They may be so incompetent they don't know they are incompetent. Those types typcially would never, ever think to test their product on a Mac.

  • Lost wireless and repeated self assigned IP address

After I updated to OSX 10.5.6 my powerbook started dropping my wireless/internet connection, and adopted a self-assigned IP address. This happened whether I connected to the router via wireless or cable.
I was eventually able to change the system configuration files as suggested in previous posts, and reset my PRMU. This has worked for a wee while, but sometimes on starting up my laptop, the machine self assigns again.
I know the internet is available as I can access it from my iphone.
Then 20min ago, whilst surfing, the internet went down AGAIN, and self-assigned its favourite IP address.
I recently updated to 10.5.7, but the problem remains.
Is this a new problem or has it been going on for a while?
Also, is it a hardware or a software problem?
    Any ideas?
    Charlie

If you are able to connect initially and then it drops out I would look towards possible sources of interference. While most modern devices avoid this issue fairly well, it is a possibility. Devices such as cordless phones used to cause problems.
If it is dropping out while you are physically connected, I would perhaps check the settings on your router. Most models have a reset function which will allow you to reset it to factory defaults. Then you could reconfigure it and see if the problem persists.
The other possibility is that there is a software service on your macbook that is starting up and causing the network loss. If possible, I would attempt to initialize and reinstall all the software on your macbook. Note that this will wipe everything off, so make sure you make appropriate backups before reinstalling from scratch.
Once you have reinstalled the OS, you can upgrade it to the most recent version and see if the problem persists before installing any other software that may interfere with it.
You really need to go through a process of elimination to find out whether the problem lies with the macbook or the router. However considering your iphone works fine, I would look towards the macbook first.
