Thinkpad 600X

My Thinkpad 600X stopped booting and gives 1 long beep and 1 short beep when turn on and immediately turns off.  It was working fine docked or undocked and now this problem.  I removed the memory and it still does it.  Any suggestion or help will be apprecited.

  • Damaged line cord on Thinkpad 600X AC Adapter

    Greetings.
I have an old Thinkpad 600X, which I adore.  Got it secondhand -- the first owner used it all day long, I use it all day long, have carried it in my backpack on numerous trips, in a bag on the floor of a Greyhound bus across the country.  The sucker just keeps on chugging.  Well done, IBM!
The insulation on the line cord (running from AC Adapter to laptop) has become torn.  The metallic-looking threads inside (the ground?) that surround the white fiber have become frayed near where the cord plugs into the laptop.  I can get power only by pinching the cord together to establish the connection.  Better than nothing, but I really need both hands to type.
Looks like the line cord will unplug from the AC Adapter itself, but using moderate pressure to try to pull the cord out has failed to unplug it, and conversations with half a dozen Lenovo support people haven't confirmed that the line cord will unplug from the Adapter.
I'm hoping that some Lenovo person who was around in the old IBM days, or anyone else who's had this problem, can tell me if the cord can be separated from the Adapter.  Any chance of being able to get a new line cord somewhere without having to buy the Adapter along with it?
The part number on the AC Adapter is FRU P/N 02K6557.  No part number on the line cord.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm sure it's possible, but there's someone in the Marketplace at TPF who has the adapters for sale for $20.

  • How to disable IBM Thinkpad 600X's tracking point ?!

    To whom it may concern:
How are you? This is Daniel. I have an IBM Thinkpad 600X notebook. The tracking point already doesn't work. I want to disable it and use an external mouse. Could you please give me a favor how to solve this problem? According to IBM manual, "Holding F1 and turn on the system, then modify its BIOS !!!". I already try serval times, but this method doesn't work, the screen always show me "ERROR CODE 8611" at first, and then automatically enter into Windows XP system. NEVER SHOW ME ITS BIOS MANUAL !!!. I think perhaps there has an another HOTKEY to wake up the BIOS. I am looking forward to your help. Have a good day.
    With best regards,
    Daniel

Yes, it can be hard to gain access to the BIOS when the Trackpoint error (8611) occurs. About the best thing I can suggest, short of removing the keyboard, would be to hold down the F1 key, while at the same time applying constant pressure on the Trackpoint in one direction (up, down, left or right) before you turn the laptop on. Continue to hold the F1 key and applying pressure on the Trackpoint while the system boots. You should eventually see the Easy-Setup (BIOS) menu. Then you can release the key and Trackpoint. Note that you may not be able to select the BIOS menu options with the Trackpoint; use the arrow key instead. When the selected option is highlighted, press the Enter key.
To (semi-)permanently disable the Trackpoint you need to access the "Config" menu and then press the CTRL-D key. That will bring up a hexadecimal display, "System Configuration Edit Utility". You then need to change the value in the third row and first column (i.e., offset 200) from the "02" that is already there to "01". Again, use the arrow keys to move the cursor to that location and then type in 01. Once that's done, press the F2 key (Save) and the screen will flash and the cursor will return to the 000 location. Then press the Escape key twice. That will put you back to the main BIOS display. Use the arrow keys and select the Restart option and confirm it.
The Trackpoint should stay disabled until you reset the BIOS. That's what I mean by semi-permanently. If for any reason you need to re-enable the Trackpoint at a later date, change the "01" back to "02" or simply choose the Initialize option in the BIOS Config menu.
edit: I had forgotten that I set up a web site with this information awhile back

  • ThinkPad 600X 2645-9EU

A friend gave it to me to see if I could get it up and running again.  It has no HDD or RAM (in addition to the native 64MB), nor does it have any of the optical drives, and I'm nearly certain the battery is dead.  I found the power cord and plugged it in, but it won't power up... the status indicator will only blink amber.  I figured I would start with this before investing in time and money refurbishing it.
I think that since it won't even power up on AC it indicates there is a problem.  Does anyone have any idea what that problem could be and how complex/costly a fix might be?

You can find out what the status blinking means, when looking into the 600X Hardware Maintance Manual :
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/09n8608.pdf
Usually that will mean that the battery needs charging, but you might also need to check and possibly replace the internal CMOS backup battery.
However, all Thinkpad 600X related documentation can be found here and I would suggest to take a look into those documents, in order to find out, if it's worth to invest time and money to refurbishing it.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?subcategoryind=0&familyind=50224&brandind=10&d...
I'll hope the above referenced documents will help you to determine if it's worth to refurbish that fine old Thinkpad, which BTW has an outstanding good keyboard.

  • IBM Thinkpad 600x OS boot issue

    Hi All
i am new to the forum world and would really appreciate your advise on a issue i have with my IBM Thinkpad 600 X.
The issue been that i replaced the cmos battery and set the time and date but yet i am still having a issue loading windows XP. It will should the typical loading screen and then blue screen as it is loading the desktop.
My experence tells me it is a corrupt file and i have tried many times to load XP and Win 98 onto this machine but all attempts fail. If it does not show me the floppy load screen ( Who uses floppys theses days?) then it shows me the screen where it says i am missing the \windows\system32\nto ..... kernal.
Any advise would be a great help. I have now take the hard drive out to try and load it from another machine as a slave so i can get my information off but without the correct resources ie convertor it has proven to be a fail.
    Thanks
    Bruce

Check your HDD, do a surface scan, perhaps it is reaching its end.Did you get the error when you were trying to install windows?

  • Last version for a Pentium III processor

I have a very old Thinkpad 600x that has a Pentium III (coppermine) processor. The current system requirements for the latest versions of Firefox reference a Pentium 4.
I'm currently running 3.5.13. None of the current add ons work with this version. What is the last version of Firefox that will work with a PIII? Operating system is XP, SP3. I want to install some form of Ad Block, and none are compatible with 3.5.13.

This is a 450 mhz processor. Computer was built in 2000 and still works like a charm. But so much today requires newer, faster hardware. The HD on this thing is only 25G, but it originally came with a 10G HD.
I should think that there might be vast numbers of people out there with functional, but outdated, hardware who still need to access the web and be safe and secure. It kind of upsets me that Mozilla would not continue to support the browsers that work for people in that situation.

  • ThinkVantage Productivity Centre-Is it pre-loaded on Lenovo Win7 Disk?

HI all, I've had refurbished IBM Thinkpads for the last ten years and, as my Thinkpad 600X began to die a slow death, I felt it was time to seriously upgrade to a Lenovo, so I got myself a T410 and it's a great machine. It's probably more computer than I need, but then I'll probably use it until it disintegrates.
The thing is that it came loaded with WinXP, which is fast becoming prehistoric, so I was thinking of loading on the Lenovo Win7 Professional CD that came with it.
However, since this will be a clean install, does this mean that I will lose the Thinkvantage Productivity Centre program that came pre-installed with the computer?
And if I do lose it, is it available to download free from Lenovo?
FULL DISCLOSURE- I'm a Gen X'er and computers really kicked in by the time I was too old to learn new tricks. So, my apologies if this query comes across as a real newb question.
    Thanks in advance, all.

Start with the operating system recovery media disc first then it would prompt for the next disc set.
But i remember there should be a Rescue and Recovery Disc.
Did you this disc package from Lenovo?
Before you go ahead and do this update, you should make a set of XP pro recovery media discs, you can do this by going under start->program->thinkvantage->create product recovery media. This should create two disc set, which is exactly like the Win 7 Recovery discs that you got, so if you ever feel like recovering back to the original win xp OS, you can use that.
    1. Put the disc in and restart the laptop, and see whether that starts the whole recovery procedure.
    2. (You may need to go into your bios, press F1 during the initial laptop startup. Once you are in the bios menu select startup, then change the boot order to make the cd drive first in the list, by pressing F5/F6 to change the listing). Now save and exit the bios.
    3. The laptop should reboot now and you should able to get into the Rescue and Recovery console, now select  the recovery back to factory condition, and do a full restore, this should load all the discs and you just have to follow the prompt.
P.S. How did you get the Win 7 OS recovery media, as the Win XP pro loaded laptop don't ship with the Win 7 OS recovery media.

  • Maxing out a G40

Hey, new here, but I've been a Thinkpad fan for a while, particularly the older and quirkier models. Just got a G-Series becuse of the interesting processor setup, and I'm planning on making a fully-loaded one if I can get some insight as to the limits of the machine. I've got 2 1GB RAM sticks and a G41 mainboard with the Nvidia card on it on the way, so I'm now looking at what all I can do while I've got the thing apart.
First off , what is the most powerful Socket 478 processor available that the BIOS supports? That's really the most important, since I'd rather not drop $60 or so on a P4EE and have the G40 not like it. Heat's another issue to consider. I imagine the ionizing plasma the thing is venting now will be nothing next to a top-of-the-line P4, and it's not like I can go out and buy a faster fan.
Second, I've heard of a Japanese-exclusive model called the G50 that came with an optional Core2Duo or Celeron M. I don't know of any C2Ds that used the desktop variant of Socket 478, so does this have a redesigned motherboard or something? If so, what are it's capabilities? The only info I can find whas that no variant of it came with the Nvidia card, but the Intel IGP was a newer model to compensate.
Third, what are the model numbers for the Samsung and Hitachi SXGA panels, and is it possible to retrofit an SXGA panel to a machine that didn't ship with one?
Finally, GPU cooling. As far as I know, the Nvidia card takes up the floppy slot and covers the hole with a cooling grate. Does the GPU have a seperate heat sink or fan? Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding pictures of how that assembly is put together.

  • DVD-RW thinkpad t23

I bought a DVD RW drive for my thinkpad t23 and the computer does not recognize it. It works and everything, but it does not appear in windows explorer even after rebooting. I tried putting that ISO file on a cd and running it at startup, but it does not seem to have any effect. What would I have to do to get this to work?
    \Thanks!

Several things could be at work here...
Has any previous Ultrabay optical drive worked before, and if so, does it still work correctly?
Who is the manufacturer of the DVDRW drive and what is the model number?
Was it bought new or used? In either case, is there any DOA guarantee provided by the seller?
Would it be possible that you can install the DVDRW drive into another Ultrabay 2000 system?

  • Thinkpad E531/E540 don't work with Corsair CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9

    Hi All,
as per title, I bought a new memory module (Corsair CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9 1 x 4GB) since I wanted to add a new 4GB module to my laptop (E531). My laptop was provided with only 1 x 4GB, so there is 1 slot free.
So, I tried to insert the new module, but the system doesn't boot up (black screen after power on, no POST beep, no alert).
    My tests:
I tried to shift the 2 memory modules, no change (1st slot: manufacturer module, 2nd slot: Corsair module; 1st slot: Corsair module, 2nd slot manufacturer module).
I installed only the new Corsair module both on the 1st slot and then the 2nd slot (by removing the manufacturer module), no change.
I tried to install the Corsair module on a E540 laptop and I performed all these tests, same behavior.
What can it be? Is the Corsair memory broken? Don't the Thinkpad Edge laptops support the Corsair memories?
    Thanks!

It is possible that the T23 motherboard has a problem with some bad solder connections of the memory module sockets. I have personally have had at least two T23 systems with this problem (out of about 60 that have been in my hands - all purchased quite used from eBay). Your options are to change out the motherboard or to attempt to re-solder the sockets; not that easy to do but it can be possible with a steady eye and good hands (or is that the other way around ).
As a double-check, could you please list the TYPE number from the "System-unit serial number" in the main BIOS setup screen? It's only seven characters long and will start with 2647 or 2648. Don't list anything past the seventh character as that's the system's serial number and that's not needed here. I know that you've listed the 1.20 BIOS, which appears to be the latest for the T23, but I want to make sure that somebody hasn't put a T23 keyboard onto a T22 (or earlier) system. That would be one explanation as to why a 512MB module does not work and what fmyhr may have been thinking about earlier (systems older than the T23 will not work with "high density" modules).
