Thinkpad A21m BIOS Password

Hi everyone.
My dad's got a Thinkpad A21m and i can't access the BIOS because it's password protected. Since he doesn't remember which password he's put there, I thought opening up the laptop and disconnecting the small battery would be enough to reset the BIOS, but now it's worse! Now he's asking me to recheck time and date settings in the BIOS, still asking me for a password! So, basically, now i can't even access the OS. Is there any way i can reset the password? Or have i done that and now he's asking me for a default password, which i don't know?
Could anyone please help me out on this?

ejmoreira, welcome to the forum,
your father will need to remember which password was set, removing the bios battery has prompted the request for the supervisor password. There are no default passwords which will help.
The only other suggestions we can offer you here are that you look in the Maintainance Manual, which explains about passwords, and replace the mainboard, or contact service or a service partner in your area.
I'm sorry; this subject is not allowed to be discussed here as stated in the forum rules and I have to lock the thread.
No posts shall include instructions or directions intended to subvert security measures, including passwords, locking mechanisms, fingerprint scans, etc, nor shall any posts provide descriptions to the location of, nor direct links to content related to these topics.
Thanks for understanding

  • Bricked laptop b/c of a major bug in the W530 BIOS password!?

I have purchased a W530 (model 2441CTO). I had to add a short/low security but convenient password to protect the BIOS. It that was exactly ** (star-star, easy to remember and fast to type on a French keyboard as it sits next to the Enter key). The BIOS accepted it  without any warning.
Now when I reboot, the BIOS asks for the password. But it WILL NO MORE take into account any special character, including the stars, it just totally ignores them. I read (too late) that a dirty way around was to skip the special characters in the password. But in my case it leaves the password empty, and an empty password means read-only mode in the BIOS. By the way, it also does not check if the stored admin password is empty *before* it checks if the entered password is empty (a second programming mistake imho).
I spent a lot of time trying to understand until I read about such an issue that dates back to 2009 !!!
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/SL-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Undocumented-problem-with-BIOS-password/td-p/...
So my question is: what shall I do now?
Send it back for an exchange?
Would a BIOS upgrade (or downgrade+upgrade) bypass this one-way security?
I am really upset by my 1775 euro brick featuring a 4 year warranty that gets half-bricked in a week or so. I just cannot understand how such an ugly and MAJOR bug could go through unfixed till 2013. This is really a serious hit to lenovo reputation.
    please do help!

Empty password means no password. The discussion you reference is for an older machine where there was an option to make the bios settings visible but not changeable when there was a pw. I am not going to get into a discussion of how passwords are stored, but I will say that the data stored is encrypted and the date depends on the scan code of the key, so that a password can be entered on one type of keyboard and cleared on a different one.  The data stored for an empty password or no password is all zeros.

  • Y510p bios password attempts

    Hi,
I have a problem with my bios password. I am not sure about it. I am pretty sure that if I had more attempts i would gues it, because I use only few passwords. I have read, that in some BIOS versions it is possible to try the password again after three wrong gueses, if you restart the laptop. I do´t want to get my notebook blocked, so the question is if it is possible in this version (74CN44WW).
I need to dualboot ot at least virtualboot Linux, but without the password is is not possible.

    adolf15,
I've not seen a Lenovo implementation of BIOS password that would permanently disable the system after X number of failed attempts.  On older ThinkPads that I have used, you got 3 tries and if you got it wrong 3 times it was locked until you powered off and then you could restart and try again 3 times, etc.
This was for the power on password.
If you can never remember it, then a board replacement would be required.  But, as far as I know, trying multiple times would not cause you to need to replace the board.

  • Thinkpad x22 bios locked

My laptop's BIOS is way out-of-date.  I have downloaded the latest one, but the update failed. The reason seems to be that the BIOS is locked i.e. all changes are disabled. There doesn't appear to be a BIOS password so I can get into the BIOS settings fine, but no changes can be made. The laptop works very well in most respects, just it would be nice to have it updated. The same problem exists with the Embedded Controller Program which I've downloaded, too. Any ideas, please? (I'm running XP Home SP3) Thanks.

  • T400 Bios password

    Hello:
I bought a Thinkpad T400 earlier this year. I haven't set the BIOS password on it but it prompts me for one. Does Lenovo put in a default BIOS password when they ship it?
    Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks,

You can still enter BIOS by pressing F1 at boot without pressing the ThinkVantage button first.

  • BIOS password (power-on password) replacement by fingerprint on x61s

Hello, just bought x61s (type 7669) and want to know whether (and how) I can set fingerprint login for power-on password.
    Thanks
On Lenovo web I found only "BIOS password (also known as power-on password) replacement is currently available on select ThinkPad notebook systems"  which is not really helpful for me

    hi snowbuk,
    try this:
    1. set the power-on password within bios (save and reboot)
    2. go to "ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software"->fingerprints->register fingerprints->power-on password
and add a new fingerprint (click on empty field above windows password)
    3. check "ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software"->security with power-on->
and enable using fingerprints for startup (save and reboot system)
    plz check whether this works

  • Urgent help, BIOS password

Hi, I'm bagging for someone to help me. I've configured my BIOS with a password, now I can't change there anything (a read only state). Is there any way to remove the BIOS password? Removing the battery will help? Please help me. Adam

If you still know the password; press F1 as soon as you see the BIOS splash screen and enter the password when required to. Removing the battery will result in the password being required to start the machine, if you don't know it you'll turn your ThinkPad into a doorstop.
If you don't know the password; discussion is not permitted in these boards as you will have seen in the forum rules. The passwords are security measures designed to protect a system and it's data should it be lost or stolen.

  • Administrator Bios Password won't work on HP 4420s XT940UT#ABA Windows 7 64 Bit

Someone please help me with this!!
I bought this laptop from a friend (have a receipt) who sold it to me because the screen was cracked and all spidered out when you turned it on. Well everywhere he went to ask about getting the screen fixed it was very expensive ($250 - $350) and he said he would just get a newer laptop. So he sold me this one which is a HP4420s XT940UT#ABA Probook Model. About a week after I bought this Probook the friend who sold it to me died suddenly. This was sudden and terrible. Some time later I got around to buying the LCD screen for this model, replaced it myself (was very easy actually) and booted up the laptop with a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro edition 64 Bit. After installing all my software and using the laptop for quite some time now, I wanted to get into the Bios which I had never done. So when I started up the laptop, hit escape, then F10 to enter BIOS, there were two places to enter a password which is different then any Dell I've ever owned. One was mine I guees that I set up using HP protect tools and the other says BIOS/Administrator. Well I can make most changes using the one I set up with my password however my password doesn't work nor can I get into some of the very important changes I wanted to make using the Bios/Administrator, like turning on the LoJack, figuring out the hard disk lock etc, turning on turbo boost, fan controls, etc. Well Since the person I bought it from is no longer with us, there is no one to turn to for the answer to this Administrator/BIOS password question / problem.  I tried taking out the Rtype battery and resetting it that way, didn't work. I called HP multiple times and they sent me to a BIOS page to download the same BIOS I have already, wouldn't let me install it. When I bring up the command prompt and put in BiosConfigureUtility.exe nothing happens, just tells me wrong command. When I try to get into the BIOS going through the C: file into the SSM files, I reach the BiosConfigUtility.exe file, click on it to open and it just flashes a small command page way to fast to read what it says. I would like to have complete control over my laptop figuring I have so much time and money invested into it now. Could the problem have something to do with installing the 64 bit version of Windows 7 instead of the 32 bit I guess it originally came with? I have all the manuals and they say that this laptop is Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64 bit compatible so that's what I installed. I get mixed answers from a lot of different people on this and would like a answer from an HP person who has experience dealing with the BIOS in the Business models of Probooks if possible please. I really like this Probook and have since became a major fan of HP over Dell and Lenovo products.  I plan to buy two more probooks, one for my wife and one for my daughter because this one is like a MacBook, only better.  Thank you for reading this and hopefully someone can help.

once you log a support case with HP customer care, they will provide you once utility and steps to run it. which can capture the UUID. BTW- UUID is a unique ID for each machine (16 or more digits) stored in BIOS itself.
Once the utility results(UUID and other info) in the log file, shared with HP. they can generate a key file(SMC) to reset.
well, Technical support depertment can help you in it, no need to ask for any specific person or department.
    hope it helps.

    hi..i have a problem...
    i have a laptop Toshiba SATELLITE A100-528 PSAA2E-01H00WGE....
the problem is that i downloaded toshiba HW setup and i accidentaly set a password..
.not a user password....it's propably supervisor password or bios password...
.the thing is that i don't know what the password is...i boot up my pc and it don't let me get in windows if i don't type the password.....is there any way to remove the password ??
it does not let me either boot from a cd or usb....i press F12 in order to choose to boot from cd or usb but it's still asks for the unknown password....is there any solution ??
    please answer it's critical !!
    thank you very much...

    >the problem is that i downloaded toshiba HW setup and i accidentaly set a password..
    >.not a user password....it's propably supervisor password or bios password...
Thats weird because the BIOS or Supervisor password can be reset only by an authorized service provider.
The BIOS password is a high security option which cannot be reset easily.
So ONLY ASP can remove a UNKNOWN password.

  • What is the BIOS Password on my Satellite A100-376?

    Hello!
Yesterday I made a BIOS update of my Toshiba Satellite A100-376 (PSAAR) to version 5.90-WIN. Everything went ok but now when I'am trying to enter BIOS Setup by pressing F2 in start, the BIOS ask me for a password but I don't know what it is because I don't have any. What's the problem? Is anything wrong? Please help me.
    Thank you!
    Tiago

    Hi there,
you are sure you didnt set a BIOS password or some of your friends/relatives? Because this is impossible that a BIOS update is setting a password. My friend has a Satellite A100-778, so he did the same update you did and he has no problems.
Maybe you should just tap "Enter" when trying to enter the BIOS. Otherwise I would say make the update again and then try to find out who set the password. :)

  • Compatible WIFI card for Thinkpad a21m, wifi orinoco silver no longer working

Thank you for having this forum available.
My husband passed down his Thinkpad A21M Type 2628-GTU to our son. The wifi card that was with it is a Lucent Technologies Orinoco Silver 11mbit/s t/n 03549501 p/n012938/c. When powered up last night, the ethernet was fully functional, but the wireless card didn't connect to the net. My husband assumed the Lucent card was bad. Is there something compatible I may buy to replace it? Do you have a suggestion on what he might have missed in trying to get it to work at home?
He has used this laptop all over the country including at home before, so I would imagine he knows what he is doing. But, we do have a new service provider since the company upgraded his computer system.
    Thank you so much!

    Welcome to the forum!
Honestly, it's time to upgrade to a newer card anyway, at least b/g. Any PCMCIA wireless card will work with your A21m, it all depends on your router, and your personal preferences.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cisco Server VCS C220 M3 Server BIOS password issue

We have a Cisco Server VCS C220 M3 Server BIOS password issue.
We needed to turn on Bit locker in the Cisco Server VCS C220. To do this we needed to create an administrator password for the BIOS to turn on trusted Platform Module (TPM). After we set up the administrator password and turn on Security for TPM. We were prompted for the administrator password. It would not let us log in with the administrator password that we created for the BIOS. In the next few days we received a BIOS is corrupted screen (BIOS Flash Image Corrupted *****).We follow procedures to recover the BIOS with the USB stick with recovery .cap file in the root folder. We tried reseating the jumper pg. 35 of the Cisco Server VCS C220 M3 Server of the Installation and Service Guide.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/hw/C220/install/C220.pdf
We were able to bring up the server, but we are still not able to get pass the Admin password issue. We tried to clear the CMOS header with Header J37 page 2-18 but we had no success with clearing out the password prompt. Figure 2-6 Service Header Locations shows the J41 BIOS RCVR boot and J37 Clear CMOS.
Can anyone provide us documentation of where the pins are located on the motherboard to clear the BIOS password? We are looking for more of a detail picture of the pins please. The documentation is only showing a basic diagram of the header locations.

You need to look at the CUCM logs for further info on what might have happened, and to make sure your servers are fit for the amount of users, devices, etc. you have in your environment.
