ThinkPad A21p

My ThinkPad has a mind of its own.  Sometimes you can push the power on button and it will turn on just fine, other times it will not.  you can let it sit for a while sometimes it takes a day or two, you push the power button and it works.  I have the battery out , I tried a different OS, I tried different memory, a different HD and the problem still exist.  When it does not work when you push the power button the lighjt flashes but nothing.  Can anyone help??

Welcome to the forum!
What you're referring to is known as a "Blink Of Death" that A2x and T2x (not inluding T23) series are infamous for, and amounts to a motherboard problem with no known cure.
A replacement motherboard is the only permanent solution to your problem.
Good luck.

George

    Healthy people
At IBM A21p laptop I installed xubuntu and I have a problem with graphic card or display. Monitor is divided into three acts. I looked a bit by the net. I found that it was possible to fix this problem with "Screens and Graphics" program. When I launched it I have not found the type of screen that I have:

  • A21p laptop

    Hello everyone
My native language is not English and I can not stand with the best of English. I use translator with Google so that errors are possible.
I use IBM thinkpad A21p - 2629HWG and unfortunately know very little about him. I hope that you can more data to date me about this notebook.
My interest to me is that operating system was installed on it originally?
Can I am for him to buy a new Ram 256MB of memory and where.
What is the screen on it, which is the manufacturer.
Can I at him, to install XUbuntu as the operating system.
    Thanks for help

    Welcome to the forum!
Feel free to PM me and we can change the language...
This is the original description of your ThinkPad:
    Product: ThinkPad A21p 2629-HWG [change]   Operating system: All [change] Original description: PIII 850MHz (256KB) 128MB RAM 32.0 GB-HS 15.0 TFT 1600x1200 8X-DVD, 3Com Combo, Win2000
Maximum RAM is 2x256Mb PC100 or low density PC133 (8 chips per side, 16 total). Original hard drives were 12.5mm, you can use standard 9.5mm ATA/IDE with no issues. You should be able to find most parts for it, RAM included,  on Ebay.
LCDs were made by LG Philips I believe, but these are long gone from production lines.
With the RAM maxed out, you should be able to run Ubuntu, although I'd opt for a lighter distro because of the low RAM...there were a couple of Serbian distros which were quite good a couple of years ago, what happened with that? You may want to start there and move on...I normally run PC Linux OS 2006 version on older ThinkPads...
    Hope this helps.

  • DAQCard-6533 performance (PCMCIA)

The on-line DAQCard-6533 PCMCIA card ad states "up to 400 kbytes/s (pattern I/O); up to 740 kbytes/s (handshaking I/O). I'm not even getting on tenth of those speeds.
If I run the card at even 25 Khz, I get error -10803 indicating an input buffer overrun (too fast). I've tried patterned I/O and handshake I/O with the same results. Increasing the buffer size makes a small difference up to about 4096, then no benefit after that.
Has anyone ever actually used this card to acquire continuous data faster than 25 KHz? Nobody I've been able to contact at NI has any hands-on experience. Everybody throws answers at me assuming I'm using the PCI version of the card, not the PCMCIA.
It appears that this card's internal FIFO is 8 samp
les deep, and it uses PIO rather than DMA, so interrupts are constantly happening. This seriously limits input speed, even on a fast notebook.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm just about to abondon NI as a supplier for our data acq cards, but I thought I'd give this one more shot. I have sample source code and a program that demonstrates the problem.

  • Error 2755?

How's that for a unique problem?
First of all, I never could get iTunes 6 to even start installing so this is a step forward, haha, as I actually managed to get the PROGRAM to crash rather than the installation... these are the problems:
    - At least three copies of msiexec.exe appear during installation, and it's only when I end one of those (has to be the right one) that the installation even starts -- found this out by a fluke.
    - After that it gets to the end of the installation, where it tells me that it could not create the values WinVersion and ActiveX for HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Apple Computer, Inc\QuickTime and to check that I have proper access and such. (Yes, am logged in as admin.)
    - Finally it gives me error 2755, saying "There might be a problem with the installation package". At times it skips step two and goes directly here at the beginning of the update and sometimes it never gets here but ends after the value thing.
All error messages are paraphrased as I'm running the installation in Swedish; hope it makes sense anyway. Would be delighted if anyone could tell me why it does this! Have tried lots of different things but no luck. Most tedious,

I clicked on "ignore" and then manually added those values in regedt32 -- voila, up and running.

  • Serious W7 Bug - ALL ATi Drivers for Thinkpads /w Switchable Graphics Technology bricks OS.

Alas, i have found one serious bug for my Thinkpad.
It comes with Switchable Graphics Card Technology, with an Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATi Mobility Radeon 3470 paired together.
I have initially installed Pre-RTM 7260(ok, i know it's leaked), and faced the problem for the first time after installing the ATi drivers from either Windows Update OR ATi's website. However i have downgraded back to Release Candidate as there was stability issues with EXPLORER.exe
Anyway, surprising what i've though to be a show-stopper bug was also present in RC 7100. After installing(or rather, midway through) the driver installation, the screen blinks for a moment and after that, Explorer.exe is nowhere to be found with only wallpaper. OS seems to be bricked as restart does nothing. Only a System Restore prior to installation would solve the issue.
After diagnosing the problem, i have found the issue to be with the Switchable Graphics Card system. In BIOS, it was set to Swithable Graphics, with OS Detection set to Enabled, Thinkpad LCD Display(for output). I tried to set the graphics to either Discrete(ATi) or Integrated(Intel) but when i booted the system up it was in SVGA resolution and DXDIAG stating no graphics found. When it was in Discrete, i tried to install the ATi drivers once again, and although installation was successful, after restarting the same thing happened.
To be fair, i have repeated the drivers installation EXACTLY the same for both Windows 7 Builds(7100 RC and 7260 Pre-RTM) and the same problem occured. I have also tried to install the ATi drivers before the Intel Chipset(and basically the rest) and it's the same nevertheless.
I believe that this is a serious issue with Switchable Graphics Technology for Windows 7 Beta, since we have to make do with the generic Microsoft display adapter alone. I hope Lenovo engineers can put priority a solution for this as soon as possible.

PS: The Ati card is showing a triangle icon in Device Manager too, but i guess updating it brings the same bricking result.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties.
When I installed RC1 (build 7100), it came with a built-in driver that worked just fine for the discrete graphics in my W500.
A few weeks later, I installed the current release Vista driver for integrated graphics (this one) and it is working just fine as well.  Installing the Lenovo driver gave me the ATI control panel (not sure what use that is), otherwise, it didn't affect performance either way.
I have switchable graphics turned off in the BIOS, OS detection turned off, and have the machine set to use the discrete graphics only.  I think it would be a bit much to expect either Microsoft or Lenovo to support the switchable graphics this early in the development of Windows 7.  Besides, the discrete graphics doesn't eat up the battery that much - I still get 3 hours of battery life, which is sufficient for my needs.
Maybe try turning switchable graphics and switchable graphics detection off in your BIOS, that might get you running again.

  • How to disable IBM Thinkpad 600X's tracking point ?!

    To whom it may concern:
How are you? This is Daniel. I have an IBM Thinkpad 600X notebook. The tracking point already doesn't work. I want to disable it and use an external mouse. Could you please give me a favor how to solve this problem? According to IBM manual, "Holding F1 and turn on the system, then modify its BIOS !!!". I already try serval times, but this method doesn't work, the screen always show me "ERROR CODE 8611" at first, and then automatically enter into Windows XP system. NEVER SHOW ME ITS BIOS MANUAL !!!. I think perhaps there has an another HOTKEY to wake up the BIOS. I am looking forward to your help. Have a good day.
    With best regards,
    Daniel

Yes, it can be hard to gain access to the BIOS when the Trackpoint error (8611) occurs. About the best thing I can suggest, short of removing the keyboard, would be to hold down the F1 key, while at the same time applying constant pressure on the Trackpoint in one direction (up, down, left or right) before you turn the laptop on. Continue to hold the F1 key and applying pressure on the Trackpoint while the system boots. You should eventually see the Easy-Setup (BIOS) menu. Then you can release the key and Trackpoint. Note that you may not be able to select the BIOS menu options with the Trackpoint; use the arrow key instead. When the selected option is highlighted, press the Enter key.
To (semi-)permanently disable the Trackpoint you need to access the "Config" menu and then press the CTRL-D key. That will bring up a hexadecimal display, "System Configuration Edit Utility". You then need to change the value in the third row and first column (i.e., offset 200) from the "02" that is already there to "01". Again, use the arrow keys to move the cursor to that location and then type in 01. Once that's done, press the F2 key (Save) and the screen will flash and the cursor will return to the 000 location. Then press the Escape key twice. That will put you back to the main BIOS display. Use the arrow keys and select the Restart option and confirm it.
The Trackpoint should stay disabled until you reset the BIOS. That's what I mean by semi-permanently. If for any reason you need to re-enable the Trackpoint at a later date, change the "01" back to "02" or simply choose the Initialize option in the BIOS Config menu.
edit: I had forgotten that I set up a web site with this information awhile back

  • Temperature Reading for Thinkpad T510 Usage

    Hi All,
I got a question regarding the standard / acceptable temperature operating range for the thinkpad t510 laptops. So my setup currently is my t510 is connected to an external monitor, external speakers, external keyboard and mouse. So it is essentially a desktop except using the innerds of the laptop as the "heart" of the system. My power manager has set the cpu to be adaptive. The temperature readings I am getting for the CPU and the Motherboard from downloading the program called Speccy from Piriform are at an average of 60 and 61 degrees C. I am wondering if that is within normal operating temperature for the laptop and if it is acceptable. Or is this temperature not ok and the reason why it is so high is that I am using the externals. Also, I am not even using heavy load work for the laptop besides for web browsing and listening to music and working on documents / spread sheet so basically office work.
And lastly, would the temperature problem be solved if in the future I would to get a w530 laptop since those laptops are more "powerful"?? Or is that wrong and the temperature is normal.
    Thanks in advance for answers

Is it because of the confined space or is it because the cpu is i7??
Either or both, It also depends on what you're doing with the T510. If the CPU is running hard that will definitely raise the temperature compared to idle/light load.
Make sure the fan air exhaust (and intake if the T510 has one) grilles aren't obstructed. Leave a few inches to let air circulate.
    Also consider:
    1. Place plastic or wood spacers below the unit to raise it an inch or so above the desktop.
    2. Use a USB-powered notebook fan base/pad to circulate air beneath the unit.
Neither will make a huge improvement but they'll both help.

OK, next suggestion is that you open the Lenovo Power Controls (it is a control panel), and see what Power Plan you have selected.
I normally use the one called "Power Source Optimized".  I suggest you pick that one, then switch to advanced mode (there is a button for this purpose in the upper right corner of the Power Controls screen), and press the 'Reset to Defaults' button.  Then reboot the machine and see how it performs.
Later on, you can go back into the Advanced mode and do some minor fine tuning.  For example, I have noticed that by default, this power plan switches the wireless LAN to 'Maximum Power Savings' when on AC power - that doesn't seem right to me, so, I usually change that to 'Maximum Performance'.

  • X61s: lost Thinkpad welcome screen

I just got an L2440p external monitor to use with my X61s (and T60p.) After messing about with this combination I no longer get the standard Thinkpad welcome screen when I power up the X61s. I suspect there is some conflict between the built-in Windows screen property settings, Intel's GMA driver/applet and various ThinkVantage software like Presentation Director. Toggling Fn+F7 doesn't seem to help. The X61s runs Vista Business.
Any ideas on how to get the Thinkpad welcome screen back?

    > are you missing the welcome screen when powering the X61s with or without the L2440p attached?
Either way. During power-on the screen remains blank all the way until Windows Login. Even the standard Windows boot progress bar is absent.
     > what do you have set as the default boot display device?   this can be accessed in the BIOS
That's the problem. I can't get into the BIOS because I can't see the ThinkPad screen. (Well actually I can, by pressing the ThinkVantage button, but I can't see what comes up thereafter.)
BTW my T60p and earlier ThinkPads all had a Configuration Utility where among other things I could forcedisplay settings. I notice this utility is AWOL on the X61s.
Edit: My error. I had the L2440p powered off but not disconnected. After I disconnected the VGA cable the Welcome screen came up on the X61s and I was able to go into BIOS Config to set Display to "Both."  Now if I power-on with no external display the Welcome screen comes up on the X61s. But if the L2440p is connected, even though I set "Both" the Welcome screen comes up only on the L2440p. What's going on?

  • "thinkpad video features" update fails and breaks machine. Anyone else got this?

The update is "thinkpad video features [...Quadro 1000M/2000M Optimus] for Windows 7 64" version 8.17.12.7593/8.15.10.2538.
It failed (gave an error message during install allong the lines of "update failed").
After this, I could not play any Direct-X games.
It also killed my color-munki profiler, so the colours are now completely off. I resinstalled the color-munki, reprofiled and im more or less back to where I started, but without the update.
Does anyone know one rolls back, or re-applies an upate?  The failed update is no-longer appearing in the new upate list.
I was hoping the update would fix some of the external monitor problems, where it randomly will not expand to a second monitor, or the internal monitors reoslution gets stuck at some low res for no apparent reason, wakeup "loses" the monitor and switches back to internal only etc.

I've had that software installed for a long time (it was released back in November), and it is trouble-free.
If you have only recently attempted to install it, go to 'Control Panel', select 'System', at the upper left corner of the screen click on 'System Protection', then roll back the system state to a date and time prior to when you installed the driver.
In the future, I recommend that you use ONLY the Lenovo System Update application to fetch and install updates.  You have created too many problems for yourself over the past couple of months trying to install drivers on your own.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Paul:
Although I am no expert on this subject, I think that the "ThinkPad Configuration Utility" has been replaced by additional functionality that Microsoft built into the operating system of Windows Vista.
There is now a tool (program?) that comes with Windows Vista called "Mobility Center".  This appears to include most of the functionality that Lenovo used to provide in the configuration utility.  Lenovo has released a little add-on tweak that gives the Microsoft provided Mobility Center a bit of extra functionality to control features that are unique to the ThinkPad, such as the keyboard light.  That Lenovo add-on is called "Mobility Center Customization", and it is available from the DDFM.
For folks who are still using earlier OS, such as XP, there has probably been no need to update the ThinkPad Configuration Utility since 2006.  By this I mean that the XP operating system is fully mature, the ThinkPad Configuration Utility is fully mature, and it is unlikely that either will be updated again unless some problem is identified.

However, my Thinkpad X201i doesn't come with Windows, it come with freeDOS. I install my own copy of Windows 7 and install all the driver from lenovo site. How can I get the recovery partition since I don't have the ability to create the recovery disc in the first place?
    Thanks

You could purchase a set of Recovery media for a X201i model 3249 ThinkPad from Lenovo for about $50, then use that to create a HDD identical to what's on a new unit. I don't know if your Windows COA key will work with that. If it doesn't, leave the partition structure it set up intact and use your Windows 7 media to reinstall Windows into the appropriate partition.

  • DVD-RW thinkpad t23

I bought a DVD RW drive for my thinkpad t23 and the computer does not recognize it. It works and everything, but it does not appear in windows explorer even after rebooting. I tried putting that ISO file on a cd and running it at startup, but it does not seem to have any effect. What would I have to do to get this to work?
    \Thanks!

Several things could be at work here...
Has any previous Ultrabay optical drive worked before, and if so, does it still work correctly?
Who is the manufacturer of the DVDRW drive and what is the model number?
Was it bought new or used? In either case, is there any DOA guarantee provided by the seller?
Would it be possible that you can install the DVDRW drive into another Ultrabay 2000 system?
