Thinkpad a22m 2628 no sound
My Thinkpad a22m 2628 is running Windows 2000 SP4 and the drivers for the sound are installed acording to the computer and it seems to be utilizing the resources correctly. I have turned on the spekers themselves and they work fine under linux I know that it is a combo driver (CS4624/CS4297A) and I have installed to the letter of the drivers from the Lenovo website but still no sound with the speakers or headphone jacks any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Hello,
if you run the downloaded audio-package, it only will be extracted to C:\DRIVERS\W2K\Audio (or similar). You additionally have to execute the CRYSETUP.exe from there.
Please also read the "Readme" from download page for additional requirements to get sound.

Hard Drive Upgrade on a Thinkpad A20m 2628-11U
I've got a Thinkpad A20m 2628-11U that has an IBM Travelstar 10gig Drive in it. After using the laptop for about half an hour, the drive warms up and gets to the point of someone using a hammer and chisel to store data. So I decided to purchase a WD250BEVE (PATA) drive to replace it. Right off the bat, The laptop would not recognize the drive at all. I've tried updating the bios and such to no avail. I've even RMA'd the drive with western digital questioning them along the way as to the possibility of why their drive would not work in this unit. They show no record of complaint. When the new drive showed up, I got the same results. Can anybody tell me if IBM put a drive or Brand limit on this unit or have any idea why a WD would not be recognized at all?
Thanks for your time...
GaryWelcome to the forum!
Have you properly inserted the drive, because that's the reason for drive not being "seen" by the machine 90% of the time, and that can be tricky on A2x and A3x unit...make sure it's sitting properly in its caddy and is pushed in all the way.
Even if your machine had a BIOS limit (137GB for older ThinkPads) the drive would still be recognized. There are no "brand restrictions" on ThinkPads of this generation.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
George

Ethernet Capability in ThinkPad A21m [2628]
My ThinkPad A21m [2628] does not currently have Ethernet capability. (“Network card” was an optional extra at the time of purchase in 2001.) The Ethernet port on the rear of the ThinkPad A21m is covered over with a cover that looks like it could be pried off. It is hard to see whether there is an actual Ethernet port underneath the cover.
I am wondering whether I would be able to add Ethernet capability to this computer. Can I simply pry off the cover, buy a compatible network card, put it into the computer myself according to the hardware manual, and then install the driver? Or, does the fact that the Ethernet port is covered over mean that there is nothing I can do about it now? My operating system is Windows 2000 SP4. I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thank you.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Yes.
Just replace the modem card with an appropriate LAN/modem combo card and it will work "out of the box".
You might have to download the appropriate driver, but the procedure is as simple as stated above, I've performed this myself many a times in the old days on both A2x and T2x units.
Cheers,
George

Wireless Card IBM to laptop A22m - 2628
Can anyone advice about the FRU number on the ref card in the subject. Thx, Kenneth
Ron_9972 wrote:
Hi kstrid,
The FRU number for the wireless card is 06P3809. The A22 System FRU Parts List is here:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-38952&velxr-layout=print
All part FRUs are listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/bp_thinkpad/06p8883.pdf
That is not the correct FRU for the card in question.
Unlike other ThinkPads, A22m had an integrated wireless card in one of the PCMCIA slots - not in the mini PCI slot - and the FRU was 26P8087

Thinkpad Yoga: Strange honking sounds and audio/video glitches
WARNING: LOUD VIDEO EXAMPLES
I have a Thinkpad Yoga, type 20CD with Windows 8.1, and when I'm running some white noise to help me concentrate, I get these strange honking noises that are quite disruptive. Even worse is that when I'm trying to watch a video on youtube, the honking noise occurs and this seems to lead to quick stalls in the video as well (note: the major stall in the middle of this video may just have been a bit of lag, I meant to highlight the minor stalls like the one that occurs at around 2 seconds). Actually, it seems that the honking causes the entire system's video to stall (e.g. cursor stalls, clock stalls, etc)
I've found only one other thread dealing with this issue and it wasn't resolved.
Addressing the suggestions brought up in the linked thread:
1) The problem occurs regardless of if I'm using the laptop's built-in speakers or my headphones. I don't see any reason to hook it up to my TV and check HDMI out.
2) Yes, problem persists with headphones.
3) The problem occurs whether I'm using the lowest quality or the highest quality audio.
4) It's the whole system, not just one application.
5) The microphone has nothing to do with it. Enabled or disabled, the problem still persists.
I've updated my audio drivers but this hasn't done anything to mitigate the problem.
Strangely enough, what does help is turning off my WiFi (i.e. Fn + F8). When the honking is occuring, I can switch the wireless card to airplane mode and the problem immediately goes away. I've read somewhere that this may be because of poor grounding on the audio card, meaning that the antenna is possibly picking up radio signals.
Are there any possible solutions to this problem?cesario85 wrote:

I have since tried putting in a different sound card (another soundblaster, I think a 28 model) and installed its drivers but had the same problems. Im having a go at using the onboard sound though, just to see.Message Edited by cesario85 on 09--2005 06:57 PM
Audigy shares IRQ with IDE controller and firewire controller. This is not good.
NOTE: I suppose you're running your PC on "Standard PC" -mode (since IRQ's >5 not showing). If so, you can try to assign IRQ for the PCI slot, Audigy is installed, manually from BIOS. See your motherboard manual page 4-26.
Can you check if your PC is running as "Standard PC" and not as "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" (Device Manager --> Computer). Make it "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" --> you get more IRQs (virtual) in use.
NOTE: You may need to reinstall OS to get this done.
Also you may need to enable APIC mode on BIOS.
How To:
A) Go to 'Device Manager' a short cut to get there is "Right Click" on the My computer Icon on your desktop (Control Panel --> System --> Hardware),
B) Next click on 'Computer', then double click on 'Standard PC'. Then select 'Driver' and then 'Update Driver'.
C) At this point you will see a screen pop up asking you to do this "Automatically" or Select 'Display a list of the known drivers for this device', - Choose this option.
D) Next you will see - 'Show all hardware of this device class'. Now you can select "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" in the list shown in the window to the right.
E) Now Windows needs/will re-start and re-install all hardware/ settings needed to run in this configuration.

Thinkpad T60 fans making sound
Hello all,
I had this thinkpad t60 for 10 months now, lately I noticed there's an noise coming from the fans located on the left side of the laptop when the systems heat up at 92º F. The noise last about a few seconds during the warming up stage, then its quite like normal, it's repeats a few times during the laptop is ON.
I don't know if anyone has the same problem, I'm thinking of something might get stuck blocking the fans or the oil is dried out.
Any help would be appreciate.
Thanks.
TWSYes, calling for support would be the best thing since it's under warranty.

PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.
Now that I've tried it out, I'm starting to think the contributors to that site were windows users who didn't read the topic. Starting up docked gave the following lspci output (notice there's no radeon card):

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
So a few parts of the dock are getting detected but not the most important parts. The error that I think is related to the absence of the graphics card appears in dmesg. Look for the part about "cannot allocate resource region":

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. Here is a docked dmesg from 2.6.27:

The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
Tells me i can't use cover flow?
hello,
i just reinstalled windows xp home on my computer, itunes gives me the "itunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer"
my specs are the following:
windows xp home sp3
latest directX
updated drivers (i think, windows was having a problem with updates)
700mhz ibm thinkpad a22m (2628) 512mb of ram 40gb hdd, i think ati rage M1
it works perfectly on my ibook g3 500 and imac g3 500 which are both obviously half of this thinkpad.
it worked before the windows reinstallation.Start menu -> Control panel - Add/remove programs.
Select QuickTime and run Repair. -
Unable to install volume controls / battery status software on A22m
I have a rather old ThinkPad - a A22m 2628-TSU - that I just recently reformated and installed with Windows XP.
I'm now trying to install the software that'll let you adjust the volume with the volume buttons and that'll show the batteries status and am having some difficulty doing so. I would have thought that Keyboard Customizer Utility for Windows 2000, XP - ThinkPad and ThinkPad Power Management driver for Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Me, 98 SE - ThinkPad would have done the trick, but alas, it appears that they do not. I ran the *.exe that I downloaded, which created a C:\DRIVERS directory, and I then ran the setup files within each of the newely created directories, but that didn't help. So what will help?
Also, unrelated to this... whenever I try to visit lenovo.com, in Firefox, on that computer, the computer freezes. It doesn't do this in Internet Explorer and lenovo.com is the only page I've found that causes this problem in Firefox (well, the whole computer freezes, but it only happens while I'm using Firefox). I know this is a short in the dark, but... any ideas? You need to install the Hot Key driver from the system utilities file matrix. (You may also need the on screen display utility also?)
re. the firefox, sorry I don't use it.

2 problems, video drivers, and cpu underclocked a22m
hi, I have an a22m 2628-RSU, first off, whatever OS I install the cpu runs at 697mhz, the bios says it is an 850mhz (the cpu it self says 850/256 meaning 850mhz 256k cache) I even replaced the CPU with an identical one, and still 697mhz.
the bios has the cpu set to performance not battery life. I have the same problem with an a21m which is a 700mhz, but only runs at 547mhz.
problem 2, I have installed windows 7 RC (7100) everything works great except it does not like the video card, same happend with vista. It says drivers are installed, but I know they are not functioning. 3d screen savers like the 3d text which work flawlessly in windows xp, tell me that my video card does not support them, in both windows vista, and 7.
thank you in advanced for any help.

IBM Thinkpad a21m 700mhz (547mhz) 384mb 40gb, Windows XPWelcome to the forum!
You have to push the machine pretty hard (open 10 Firefox windows and run Photoshop at the same time) to get the CPU to work at maximum speed. That is one of the ideas behind Intel's SpeedStep that your A22m has.
Graphic cards as old as yours are not supported by Vista or W7.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
George

Hello, I know what your thinking, but it actually runs better windows xp, except for one thing, the display drivers.
same thing happens in vista. the drivers install successfully, but in device manager I get this error: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
people told me its because the video card is "too old" it works in XP, and can handle direct 3D with directX 9, it has no reason not to work. has ANYONE gotten this card to work in either windows vista or windows 7?
its an a22m 2628-RSU
OS: Windows 7 RC (7100)

I don't have any sound when viewing Youtube on IE or Firefox. I think it disappeared after a windows xp update (before the Microsoft cut-off date). I still get beeps from the X31 Thinkpad though, just no sound with Youtube or XP on start up for example. By the way Youtube is lagging too since the win xp update -it wasn't before though. I updated all the drivers for the X31 from your Lenovo site but to no avail. I have the latest Flash installed. Installed Shockwave too Direct X installed - didn't make a difference I think its something to do with the windows xp update cause after that my Thinkpad got stuffed up, Youtube slowed and Soundmax drivers kept disappearing and reappearing. I tried the regedit trick for audio whereby you trick windows into thinking it's service pack 2 (I'm on service pack 3, XP). Also checked Device Manager under audio, no ! marks beside the audio. I tried CCleaner as well. I disabled the video accelerator under settings in Youtube video as well I don't have many 3rd party programs installed on the Thinkpad eg no iTunes, no Skype either. Thanks in advance
Solved!
Go to Solution.Service pack 3 included the HDA drivers. Did you change the registry back from trying to fool the system into thinking you had Service Pack 2?
What is exactly listed under Sound, video and game controllers in Control Panel?
In C: there should be a folder labeled Drivers. There should be a folder in there called Audio. In there, there should be an icon for Install. See if you can install it from there.
You might want to check and see if you are set to automatically install all updates from Windows Update. If you are, Windows might be installing a later driver that might not be working quite right. I wouldn't let Windows automatically install optional updates.
Another thing you could do if you haven't already tried it is install TVSU and run it and see what it comes up with. You'll need an up to date net.framework installed to run it. If there is a bios available, that could fix it. I usually don't recommend updating the bios just because bios updates can be a little dangerous to do, but in this case it might just fix it if there is one available.
I have an X32 running the preload that I'm checking out your problem with and it's set up pretty much the same as yours. We should be able to figure this out.
Regards,
Dave

Hi
I just installed an application caled camtasia on my g580, which is is video making tool. I done a few tests of the sound playback of my recording and the sound is really hissy and muffled like speaking into a cup. I tried increasing the system sound and lowering the microphone sound, which helped a little bit but not much. I still get the hissing interference sound in the background.
I used camtasia on my old XP HP laptop and never had this problem.
Any thoughts on proper sound settings I can use or changes I can make to fix this?
Thanks
AndrewNo it is the same both headset on and when unplugged.
I have two microhpone devices listed in the properties. The default one says manufacturer is Microsoft so I am guessing that it is the built in microphone. If I mute the microphone and try speaking with my headphones on then nothing gets recorded, same with if I remove my microphone headset.
I take it if you plug in a mic then this is what directs the sound through the system but the main microphone is still the default device?
Also wondering why I do not have realtek showing up anywhere. I have realtek folder in my program files. Seen a thread here where no sound problem was fixed by doing some tweaking in realtek advanced control panel wherever that is:

Cannot map sound through it from another system?
I have two systems, the mac mini and a thinkpad notebook. I initially setup the mac speaker output to go to the input on my thinkpad dock, worked like a charm, I could hear both the sounds on the mac (itunes for instance) while still being able to hear sounds on my thinkpad when I'm working through the same speakers.
I just tried this in reverse as the family would like the mac to have sound when I'm out of the house with my laptop. It doesn't work.
When I am looking at the input for sound on the mac and I play a sound on the thinkpad the mac KNOWS the sound is being played, the input level shows it, but it just will not actually play it through the speakers.
What am I missing here? Sound does play from the mac through the speakers though.Well, this worked and didn't work. It did pass sound through, but it always had an annoying "buzz" in the speakers, like a mic hooked up to an amp etc. Also, the sound wasn't clean and crisp, was kind of choppy I guess...Tried it even at the lowest levels I could set everything to, the buzz was always there and the sound just wasn't quite right.
Thanks for the suggestion though!
It's just too bad a mac can't do this natively and clean like my thinkpad does...on the thinkpad no buzz and sound is clear as a bell...Guess the family will just have to get use to plugging the speakers into the mac when I've taken my laptop with me and left for the day.
