ThinkPad E335 function keys

My Edge E335 came with Win 7 but I later added Win 8.1 in dual boot.  Win 8.1, free of all the Lenovo software, is better in use for me except that the function keys all have the Lenovo laptop functions for camera, screen brightness and so on rather than the default Microsoft functions with no option to switch with the Fn key.  Is there a BIOS update available for 8.1, or any other way to have both sets of functions available?

Hello.
To keep your F1-F12 keys locked, just press FN+ESC once. When you wish them to return to the default media mode, then just press FN+ESC again.
Cheers!

  • Thinkpad E531 Function Key Fix?

Is there a way to toggle the function key off so the F1 to F12 keys work as they would on a normal keyboard? I have found threads where you can change this in the bios on other machines, but there is no fix for this in the E531 bios. Lenovo, if you read these forums, this is a major design flaw.

Hi, it is a serious design flow. All our users are complaining about this totally obsolete function.
However, if you read the manual, you can see that you must use the keycombination [Fn]+[Esc].
The led on the [Fn]-key will light up, which means that you can use the function keys the normal way!
I sincerely hope that Lenovo is reading this forum and that they stop shipping computers with the wrong setup.
Function keys should be set according to the world standard: [F1]-[F12]

  • E545 and Function key not working

Any help here is apprecited. My function (Fn) key is refusing to work at all. None of the special features are able to be used. I've checked all my drivers, and followed the instructions in the User Guide, but some of the options described in the guide are even showing on my computer.
I'd love for some help on this issue, as the computer is pretty worthless right now.

    Hi Jamesbjenkins,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with keyboard function keys not working on your ThinkPad E545.
Is the system updated with all the latest drivers and application? To confirm with I request you to run ThinkVantage system update tool. This will search for all the required drivers and application for your system and will update.

  • Persistently lock function keys!?

    Hello,
I would like to persistently lock the function keys at my E531 laptop.
I know you can switch between function keys and multimedia functions by setting FnLock (Fn+ESC), but unfortunately this setting is volatile: everytime I restart the system (even from power saving mode), it is lost and the keys default to multimedia again.
Using this laptop only for "real work", with software that extensively uses the function keys, this is really getting on my nerves...
Is there any way to persistently lock the function keys to generate F1..F12 keycodes?
If I'd ever need the multimedia functions, I'll luckily hold down the Fn key before...
    OS is Windows 8.1.
    Thanks for any help,
    Tilmann

    Tillman,
In addition to the suggestions Mithunr has made, I would ask if you are running the preload?
Could you also check to see that the hotkey drivers are installed, especially if you have done a reload of the system.
I mention this after reading this thread -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/ThinkPad-Yoga-FN-keys/td-p/1355211
    Thanks!

  • Lost all visual indicators, function keys, etc. on T500 (Type 2082)

I think CCleaner is the culprit as soon after running that, I lost all my onscreen indicators (volume, brightness, battery meter in the system tray, etc.) as well as functionality - volume up and down work, but mute does not.  Blue Thinkvantage button doesn't work.  Also, none of the Function keys now work.  I re-installed software - the HotKey manager, the ThinkVantage toolbox and have done all updates, but still the T500 refuses to cooperate.  I'm running Win7 32bit.  If anyone has some advice to get things running correctly again, it'd be most appreciated.
    thanks,
    Dan

Well making some progress.  Once I tracked down the HotKey Client Loader dependencies (ThinkPad PM Service, which was also disabled), got it to start.  So now, the mute button and volume indicator are working.  The ThinkVantage button now works (though I'm not sure why I really care that much, since that bloatware takes forever to load).
The function keys are working, but still no visual indicator for brightness and the Power Manager Gauge icon in the SysTray is still not showing.
    Any more clues?
    thanks

  • Ideapad U430p, Swap function keys and my cat

So I bought the U430p and after installing the complete system new, I am quite happy with it. Obviously my cat also. I disabled in the Bios the Hotkey that I don't have to press all the time Fn+one of the function keys to access these. However, I read this forum and several others asked also this question, however my cat must have found a hidden key combination to swap the Fn keys back after stepping or sleeping on my notebook. It happened already 2 times, that I pressed F2 (to rename a file) and the loudness was going down. F5 and the window closes. So I went back to the BIOS and to my surprise the Hotkey was still disabled(!). So I enabled it and disabled it again, Exit and save settings and all was back to normal. Pressing the Decrease Volume was F2 again, so I could rename w/o pressing the Fn key. Until 2 days ago, same situation, cat stepped at night on the notebook and I had to suffer again that selecting F2 was only possible with the Fn Key. Bios same, Hotkey was still disabled. My question is now: what is the secret hotkey in Windows (or login screen) to swap the Fn keys. If my cat can do it, I wanna do it also Cheers Tom

I have the same problem, and I really can't understand why do they do such things! I even can't get a normal answer from Lenovo about it. I like Thinkpads, they are great designed & they have a lot of unique features, most of them could be customized, exept this! Why??? I can't belive that it's so hard to remap 2 buttons using BIOS! The problem is that the FN key doesn't generate a scan code, which could be recognized by the software, i tried numerous programs to remap the FN button, but it's useless. You can do it only in 2 ways: 1. mechanical - to swap them fisically, but it's hard, dangerous & the warranty will be lost of course. 2. BIOS remapping which can be done only by Lenovo or maybe by somobody, who can hack the BIOS. So, Dear Lenovo Experts PLEASE do this feature for us, we REALLY neeed it! We need it much more than "keyboard customizer", more than "easy eject", more than "media center" becouse we use the left CTRL button every minute, working on your notebook!

  • W540 How do you reverse the hotkeys back to the function keys without Fn

Just got my thinkpad W540. want to be able to swith between the hotkeys and the function keys. Is there an easy way to do this?

Good day and welcome to the community.
On my newer ThinkPads, pressing the Fn key and tapping ESC turns on FnLk (small LED on the key lights up) and the F keys then invoke F1, F2, etc.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo Z500 Intel Graphics and Function Keys problem on Windows 10

Hi.i have a problem with Windows 10 upgrade. My Model Is Lenovo Z500.  6Gb Ram.  Intel 3230m.  Nvidia GT740m.Since the upgrade to Windows 10 the brightness is at full and i cant dim it,it's always the same.and there are two more problems.second one is my shortcut function keys(Fn + F buttons) don't work :bluetooth, touchpad, turn off screen, refresh etc... .Only buttons that work are for volume and for brightness that dont do anything when i try to lower it down but it shows in upper left corner that the keys are responding. And the third problem is i cant duplicate my display but only can extend .As far for the other stuff everything is smooth and fast.even my games got bigger FPS, for example "Counter Strike Global Offensive". I would like to know if there is fix for brightness and for duplicate screen problem regarding graphics driver, and for my function keys regarding keyboard. Thanks and  i hope for quick response. I know Windows 10 just came out and i know you are at full capacitity for solving everyone's problem but i hope you'll look into this because i'm not the only one with this problems.

    Hi phitbull,
Are all the hotkeys on your SL500 not working, or they are simply not displaying the controls on-screen? (ie. increase, decrease or mute will display on screen). It may be possible that you are missing out on some drivers for your system. If you look around the forums, there are many posts on users experiencing hotkey issues, mainly due to missing pre-requisite drivers. You can find a handful of drivers in the Lenovo Support website's Windows 7 BETA page at the following URL:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=WIN7-BETA
Perhaps you can give this a try:
    1. Install the Lenovo System Interface Driver (v1.01):
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=WIN7-BETA#sid
    2. Install the Hotkey drivers (which installs OnScreen Display v5.32.00 and ThinkPad FulLScreen Magnifier v2.07)
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=WIN7-BETA#atkh
Hope the above helps with your issues.

  • I need an option to remap reprogram or swap the ctrl and function keys on my laptop

    Open letter to Lenovo
How many Lenovo laptop users does it take to get a change or option added to remap, reassign, reprogram or swap the two keys on the lower left of the keybards with each other?
The number one question I'm asked (and the first question I asked of a lenovo laptop user) was how long did it take to get used to the function key being in the wrong place on the keyboard?  I did a search on the web and found a number of threads that discussed and talked about if it were possible to switch those two keys on the keyboard such as this: http://www.ashbaughonline.com/2006/08/12/thinkpad-fn-ctrl-key/   The point being is there are many lenovo laptop users that would love to have the option at least of swapping the function and ctrl key location on the keyboard and we wouldn't even complain that the key names were wrong afterwards if it were made available in some BIOS or other configuration setting.
Lenovo, how many users would need to ask for this option to make it happen?
Please add me to those who would like to see this happen and to anyone else please reply and chime in.

I have the same problem, and I really can't understand why do they do such things! I even can't get a normal answer from Lenovo about it. • ThinkPad Yoga F keys

    Any help appreciated.
I'm trying to get my F keys to act in a 'legacy' fashion so I don't need to hit the "Fn" key to get the "F Keys" to work as ordinary F keys.
Tried the Advanced Startup BIOS. Didn't provide me the option there?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Danny,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The option of changing the function keys back to legacy is no longer available in the BIOS in most of the new ThinkPad models. You may try the Fn+esc combination that locks it, but when the computer reboots, this resets back to a default mode and you have to use Fn+esc again.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • [SOLVED] Function Keys Problem On Dell Inspiron N5010

Yesterday I bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron N5010) and immediately installed Arch Linux on it. But when I launched the installation framework, I needed to use fdisk to partition my drive manually and to open another tty, ctrl + alt + f2 or up to f7, none of them worked. When I use f4 or f5 for example, it changes the brightness of the screen cause these keys have icons on them which represent the brightness control. So I quitted, took care of that fdisk issue and got back, installed Arch Linux successfully. When launched in GNOME 3, nothing was changed. It still uses f1, f2, ... and so on as "just function keys" without using "Fn" key. It's fine somehow cause my system automatically detected those keys, I can use every single function of my keyboard. But without using Fn key, I can't actually use any fx key for my own use. For example, I can't use Tilda anymore cause when I use only f1, it tries to open monitor control stuff.
    So... any ideas?
Edit: It seems that this problem is all about Arch Linux. A friend of mine has the same laptop and he has just tried Mint Debian RC and function keys worked properly. So, there's a problem and it seems it's related to Arch Linux (or maybe Xorg version, somehow?).

xdunlapx wrote:The function key on my dell laptop was set to the F keys, meaning you have to hit the function key and then an F key to activate the F key. I switched it in the bios so I don't have to hit the function key to activate the F keys. So I would have had to hit Fn+Ctrl-Alt-F1 for example to get to TTY 1. Now since i switched it off in the bios All I have to do is hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the terminal. But in order to turn off wifi from the F key (for example) I have to hit Fn+F2. It's switched.
I can't tell you how this was helpful. I've never noticed that there was an option in BIOS's Advanced menu for this. I updated it as "Function Key" and it solved my problem, thanks.

  • X1 Carbon 2014 Function keys not working in windows7

    Hello.
I have a brand new X1 carbon(model: 20A7-005KMD) that was installed with our company image, running windows 7.
Alle drivers in device manager has been installed, and system update is updated.
The carbon has the "touch" function keys and they only partly work.
When booting the computer i can swap between the different functions, but when i get into windows, its is "stuck" with only the options F1-F12. The F keys work, but i cant change settings by pressing the FN key on the left side og the touch display, and get sounds/brightness settings etc.
as said, this works just fine during the boot.
Any ideas what can be causing this and even more important - a fix?

    Hi Guys,
We are currently having the same issue on the X1 Carbon 20A7 models (20A7000LAU). In BIOS or during boot the function changing works without issue (limited to two (2) function screens how-ever), it stops working once you log in. If you then lock the computer you can change the functions, but then once you unlock the device, it stops working.
When the drivers are installed and the device is restart we get the above behaviour, if we uninstall the drivers the function keys will function as expected till the device is restarted. This is very strange behaviour.
On a device received by Lenovo there are 4 function changes/screens in total, we can only make two work temporarily as listed above. We have tried the following.
    1. MDT 2013 Delivered Windows 8.1 x64 image image. All drivers/software components installed from the lenovo website. We receive above issue and cannot resolve by uninstall/reinstalling.
    2. Vanilla Windows 8.1 ENT x64 image installed from Microsoft Volume Licensing portal, installed all drivers supplied from the Lenovo Website. The same behaviour is seen as above and is reproducable.
    3. We have als compared all drivers/software installed on the factory supplied model to a manually built device, still the above behaviour is witnessed.
    4. We have manually exported drivers from the X1 Carbon device from lenovo and injected them into the vanilla Windows 8.1 ENT or PRO newly imaged device, still the same behaviour above.
Please let me know what I'm missing, I'm certain this is a bug in the drivers for this model.
    Regards,
    Nic

  • Is it possible to display the standard function keys in screen painter

    Hi ,
I design a screen in se51 where I use push buttons and input/output buttons and so on in the layout, here in the layout or in my final output screen(when i assign this screen to a transaction) I would like to display other standard keys, ie the function keys and application toolbar items. I would like to know whether there is a possibility to do this , if yes then how?
In a menu painter there is a possibility where I can customize the keys or I can use the standard keys by going to se41 extras->adjust template. Is there similar possibilities in the screen painter.

    Ok I see. I should use &var.
