Thinkpad E430: Is this some kind of a practical joke?

I purchased a Thinkpad E430 in May this year, personally. Generally I don't post
reviews, but this product deserves it.
First of all, as a developer, my reasons for purchase of the machine were to get
a computer with a decent keyboard and build quality better than the general
consumer products. I don't have many complaints with the keyboard. The media
keys should not be activated by `fn` key instead of the function keys. But
considering the hardware and build quality, E430 fails miserably.
I expected my E430 to hold up for a year at least, but it isn't designed for
that apparently. This is the case when it was not my primary computer, I spend
about 80% of my time on the office computer. The laptop just degrades while
sitting there it seems.
It has been about 200 days and so far, there have been 3 hardware service
requests processed on the machine: Dead pixels on screen, dysfunctional
microphone and then a broken case (probably because of the previous 2
services). Plus there is the faulty BIOS, which issue

has been ever pending.
All this was fine until a few days back, when I realized the screen has
developed a permanent spot in the middle - because of the way the screen and
keyboard are placed. I haven't been able to find time to place another service
request. Plus the behaviour of the people at the lenovo center is just so
terrible that I am reluctant to visit them.
I have owned 4 laptops from other brands - 3 consumer (2 HP, 1 Sony) and 1
business (HP). None of these computers ever failed or required any hardware
maintenance. A couple of were served upto 5 years, after which the hardware was
just obsolete. Infact I have used Lenovo's ThinkPad X230 for a couple of months
which was a decent experience.
It is clear that Lenovo's plan is to make as much as they can from the ThinkPad
brand name while they slowly kill it off.
After the purchase, I actually recommended this machine to a couple of my
friends. Mow my opinions regarding computers are valued much less thanks to the
E430. What I wish now, is for someone to just take this machine away from me. It
reminds me of a mistaken purchase (which actually seldom happens). I was never
in my 3-4 calls with the sales people told about E430's quality even when I
specifically enquired. It were the Lenovo's service guys that told me that the
case is the same with all the other unit's which exist of this "ThinkPad" Edge.

Im described as a thinkpad evangalist but I too agree with this disregard for the brand.
Having owned multiple thinkpads over the years its very obvious that there is no longer care for build quality and / or knowledge on the phone.
My X230T was plaqued with simple issues and phone support was laughable - the bottom line is to never let lenovo service your machine but to keep trying to get them to send you a unit that isnt broken.  Ive had lenovo say things are warrentable one day and not the next.
My brand new TPY arrived with the screen bezel popped off in the right hand corner - this isnt a warrentable issue!? and the laptop itselve is plagued with driver / sleep errors rending the trackpad frozen / disconnected for large periods of time.
All these issues would be resolved if someone in the factory took 5 seconds to look at the machine, or support to atually note down the failures that we are telling them about over the phone rather than mockingly being told that the "head engineer" doesnt regard xxxxx as a failure.

  • Only 71 of my 437 notes sync from my iPhone to iCloud.  Is this some kind of limit?

    It doesn't really make sense for them to cap what would presumably be very small text files... and if so, why cap it at the bizzarre number of 71?
    If notes cannot sync all of my notes between devices I'll have to copy-paste all of my notes into the evernote app on my phone.  I would like to avoid doing this for obvious reasons.

    There's a menu choice (I think under "Files") that lets you sync purchased items on a device back to itunes.  Look for that.
    iCloud does not store music.  If you want to do that you'd have to subscribe to itunes Match, but to get music to the match servers, you need the music in the itunes library on your computer.

    I just updated my Macintosh to  the latest build. I don't know how much data was fetched from the server
    but updating OSX takes less. Still when you switching between spaces CC expands this annoying panel.
    More fun was on windows. I've been notified that there's a new update and that's what i saw.
    I presumed that OK button was highlighted by default so first i clicked cross and CC was closed.
    Then i tried to click the left button and CC was closed.

    - what should be displayed ont those buttons
    - is it possible to skip the update

      - InDesign/Illustrator SDK for partners who paid to get this SDK's earlier - when?

    Hi,
    On windows, we have seen blank buttons happening when there is classic theme selected. Cahnge your theme for a small time and you will see the buttons rendered as they should be. After CC App is updated, you can go back to the classice theme. This issue will not come from build 183 onwards.
    Regarding disabling CC on stratup, there is a preference for that. In the top right corner of CC App windows, click on the gear icon. Now click on preferences. In the General Setting, unselect, launch at login.

    It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
    So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro.  But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
    Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
    Some qualification:  There are boxes that I think support hdmi input.  Look at Blackmagic.  But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box).

    Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

    Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
    * Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
    Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

    Yes, they can play games - there are hundreds if not thousands of games available in the iTunes Store. Beware of the "free" games; many are free for the base game but charge for things like additional levels, "coins" etc. and those paid add-ons can add up quickly, to dozens or even in some cases hundreds of dollars. I'd strongly suggest you set up restrictions on the iPad to prevent your children from making unauthorized purchases. See:

    You will need an Internet provider of some sort; Apple is not a provider and so the iPad does not include a data service. You can either use a home Internet connection with a WiFi access point (aka "router") or you can get an iPad with WiFi+Cellular and sign up for a data plan with a cell carrier. WiFi through a home Internet service will probably be cheaper.

    My advice is to uninstall that extension. IMO, you have too many extensions installed, and are asking for problems with Firefox.     also check activity monitor - all processes - see what's using up most of your cpu resources under % CPU....
    highlight anything that's really high and hit quit process......anything over 10% is considered high - unless it's your browser....
