Thinkpad E540 WAN

Does the Thinkpad E540 come standard with simcard internet?
I have gotten this laptop it has a sim slot but cannot get it to work via WAN?
By all looks it doesn't have a modem installed any assistance please would be greatly appreciated, and if I need to add a modem where can I get one?

You probably have only the sim slot, but not the WAN card installed. It's expensive and you buy it as an extra.
It's for the M.2 slot, located next to the clock battery/wireless bay. : )

    Hi Zepptar,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Hang while booting to Windows on your ThinkPad E540.
Please check if the system is booting to safe mode.
Check with HDD diagnosing tool, to proceed with diagnose tool you have to keep tapping F1 or F12 after switching ON the system and run the HDD diagnose and check if it is showing any error in the HDD drive.
Please click here to visit the link where you can check for more options.

  • Thinkpad E540 Dual External Monitors

    Hi,
I'm looking to purchase the Core I7 E540, and see it comes with the Nvidia 740M chipset.
I've found confirmation that the core I5 with intel 4600 graphics supports muliple monitors over both HDMI and VGA simultaneously - giving 3 seperate displays, one on laptop monitor, one on vga, one on hdmi  but cannot find any info if the 740M also supports this.
Can anyone confirm if this is possible on the nvidia 740M aswell?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK we went ahead and bought one of these. Can confirm you can extend your desktop to hdmi and vga simualtanously on the E540 with Nvidia 740M, and still use the build in screen, so can have 3 separate desktops.

  • Junk called Lenovo Thinkpad E540

Think twice before you buy LENOVO Thinkpad laptop...got mine two months ago, had issue with wifi. Called Lenovo support three times, three times different agents and three times problem was not solved. I called 4th time and had to order warranty repair that goes to other side of Canada(three times going to courier PUROLATOR who never left me TRACKING number, they just called me while I was driving and it was automatic voice haha)...then I wait for two weeks and their TECHNICIANS fix the issue by re-installing the windows and testing for 20min. They send it back as "fixed"...of course it has the same issue cause the problem is in WIFI card not windows. But, let's see if they gonna send me money back...cause I'm not gonna send it again unless they gonna come personally pick it up and drop it off in my place in the time when I'm available
You think twice about buying Lenovo, I'll think twice fist fighting again with my Toshiba that never had any issue in many many years...and life is goood

I know that ubuntu patches this driver... whether this is, has been, or will be submitted upstream I have no idea.  But maybe you want to give it a go...

  • Thinkpad e540 latency issues - please help?

i just bought this e540 model 20C6S01Q00 and there is a a certain game i play where i immediately noticed there is an issue with something in this laptop. the game shows my pings on this laptop ranging from 300 to spiking up to over 1k while i have my old lenovo running on the same server with a steady ping of a little over a 100. if anyone knows what the issue could be and if you know how to fix it please let me know, greatly appreciated, thanks.

Better yet, Motu 828 MKII offers direct monitoring through it's cuemix console. This is as low latency as you can get - direct hardware monitoring. Even with a small buffer setting when going through the computer there is still some latency. When tracking vox I've noticed that even the slight bit of latency introduced by running through the DAW keeps a singer from doing his or her best. It's a noticeable improvement when you go to direct monitoring. Takes a few minutes to figure out and set up but it is well worth it.

  • Thinkpad E540 with Windows 7 drops Wifi constantly

We just purchased 18 of these E540's and all of them are having the same issues in our network.  They connect connect wirelessly but while doing a continuous ping I see a Request time out or a destination host unreachable every 8 or so pings.
I have used system update to update everything on the laptop, I have also done all the updates for Windows 7 and I have det the BIOS to original defaults.
I know there is talks of this "Lenovo EMC Storage Connector" causing issues with excessive traffic on windows 8.1 but we are dealing with Windows 7 64 bit and the process in question "discovery.exe: is not running nor present.
Any help would be very appreciated.
As a note I would like to point out that we have around 400 other wireless devices in our network at any given moment and we have not had any issues with any other prior Lenovo products.  As a matther of fact we just deployed 60 Lenovo N20 Chromes last week without any issues.
     Thanks

The only way we could make this work in our envirinment (and we have a big High school with well over 500 wireless devices that work without any issues), was to have Lenovo send us some different WiFi cards, They sent us the Broadcom BGN 1x1, BT4.0 cards

  • Thinkpad E540 & Linux

    ¡Resuelto!
    Ir a solución.

    Hola Miguel!
He estado haciendo pruebas.

  • Thinkpad e540 Harddisc C Problem

    Hello,
So I took my barely 20 days old laptop at the university today because I had to make a presentation. On the way to the classroom and on the way back, to avoid any shocks, the laptop was completely shut down.
Then when I get home and try to open it I get a message under the Lenovo logo during the start up that basically says that a problem occurred to the Hard Disc C and that it was trying to correct it (and then there was a percentage counter).
Then the laptop started as usual.
Why did that happen? Can that be a sign of an underlying hardware problem?
I also get very often a message from Lenovo Thinkvantage that basically says that something is wrong with my harddrive sensors and that I have to use PC Doctor for DOS (even though Lenovo has discontinued it).
When I scan my Hardware with Lenovo Solutions though, it detects absolutely no problem.
Extra: For a week now the light on the mute button (F1) is on all the time the computer is on, regardless whether the computer is muted or not. The button per se works, but the light is on all the time.
I know they look like little things but a brand new, barely even used laptop shouldn't normally have so many hardware related issues.
I would greatly appreaciate any help you can give me.
    Regards,
    Ay42

    https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/videos/pd021754

  • Thinkpad E540 freezing on waking from hibernation

This is a brand new laptop running Windows 8.1 and it randomly freezes on opening the lid after hibernation.
I have updated to the latest bios and removed Lenovo tools for smal businesses both solutions were found on various forums.  Before I return it with a ticket to Lenovo does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause?
I bought an almost identical machine about a month before and it has no problem.

Yes I can confirm that this is what I was suspecting. When my Macbook Pro hibernates with Parallels running, it freezes with the RAM problem. When Parallels is off, if wakes normally, no problem at all. I am also getting constant bad RAM "access violation", "runtime", and "exception" errors when running RAM-intensive programs that crash whatever I was working on. This is really making Windows unuseable for me but I am struggling with it considering there is no alternative expect using an actual crappy PC.
I found an article on Parallels forum that describes this issue among others: http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=108735
Unfortunately, it's been an issue for almost a year now and no solution. Really bad support from Parallels if you ask me. Can't say anything about VMWare though, because I do not use that.

  • Thinkpad E540. Bios update 2.09. Ctrl and Fn swap bug

When i updated bios to 2.09 i see in changelog
    Added hotkey support for Fn+P(Pause)/Fn+K(ScrLK)/Fn+B(Left-Ctrl + Break)/Fn+S(Left-Alt + SysRq)
But this change is buggy. I use swapped Fn key and Ctrl. And key combination CTRL+S produces CTRL+ALT. Please fix.

  • White rectangular box in desktop screen of Thinkpad Edge E540

    Hello,
My Lenovo Thinkpad E540 (Model: 20C6008QUS) shipped yesterday and during configuring it for the first time , I found a strange problem (and it was during the first few hours after unboxing). I started experiencing a weird white (or gray) rectangular box on the top-left corner of the desktop and I have no idea where it was originated from (snapshot attached).
The box doesn't show up at the startup but whenever I logon to the windows after sleep or hibernation this box pops up. This box is just blocking all the icons below it and it is very much annoying.
Can anyone please help me out by providing any kind of solution with it ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I can't say I recall ever seeing that before, but my initial thought is that it is a dialog from an application that wants you to register, install an update or some other kind of interactive message but isn't painting properly.
You could try bringing up the Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together, looking at the apps whicha are open, and closing them one-by-one until you find the culprit.
If that works to identify the program, perhaps you can update it manually.

  • (SOLVED) Thinkpad T410 and 3G internet

This post may reflect my lack of experience with notbooks, but I have a question regarding my brand new Thinkpad T410. I didn't choose the notebook myself, it was given to me through my employer. Naturally all administrator privileges are non-existing, so I have to rely on my company's "technical support" for any changes to the software.
Now, if I'm not mistaken this computer should be ready for a sim-card and 3G internet connection (That's WWAN, right?). Model is 2522-WTX. Now, in device manager, I cannot find anything regarding a WWAN module, allthough there is a SIM-card slot under the battery.
I have allready called for my employers support department to help me out, but I know that they just started buying the Lenovo computers, and they don't have that much experience setting them up. So I'm trying to help them out by figuring out what needs to be done. From what I have read so far, installing drivers for this module should activate it. I don't know if the "Access Connection" tool is strictly needed. However, on Lenovo's  drivers download page there are too many choices for driver download:
    1) HUAWEI EM660 Wireless WAN
    2) HUAWEI EM660 Wireless WAN firmware
    3) Leadcore 5730D Wireless WAN
    4) Thinkpad Wireless WAN (UNDP) - Boot Code Update Utility
    5) Thinkpad Wireless WAN (UNDP) - Qualcomm Gobi2000
Do I need all of them? Some? Which ones? Should I be good to go only with the drivers, or is Access Connection needed (I'm running Windows 7)? Is any SIM-card valid, or are there any ISP-related limits I need to know of (currently my mobile internet provider is Netcom, Norway).
I hope that some of you are capable of helping me out, thanks in advance!

Thanks for all answers. To get to the bottom of whether I do have the 3G-card installed, I opened up the hatch underneath the laptop. There it is, as someone said, it is the Qualcomm Gobi2000 card. Antenna wires connected.
So, I browsed through the device manager again. It seems that I hadn't looked at the right places. I had looked at "Modems" and "Network cards". But in the "Ports (COM and LPT)" category, it is listed as "Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB QDLoader9204 (COM5). No exclamation point either. When going to properties, the driver date is 12. jan 2010. Driver version 2.0.7.1. Port  settings are: bps: 9600. Databits:8. Parity: None. Stopbits:1. Flow control: None.
But how do I use it? Fn+F5 doesn't seem to do much (should it?). I can't find any way of accessing it through the regular windows 7 Network and Sharing Center. As I wrote in my first post, I have no administration rights, so installing additional software needs to be done by my company's tech guy. Is there any way I should be able to connect through 3G without eiter 3rd party or Lenovo software? Any BIOS-setting that needs to be altered?
PS: I also have none of the Lenovo software preinstalled (Lenovo system update, toolbox etc.). This computer is almost completely stripped :-(
The Qualcomm device on COM5 is the GPS serial interface, the 3G card should be listed under Network Adapters. Once the card is working you should be able to select your provider from inside of access connections to connect.
