ThinkPad L440 Screen Brightness

I recently updated my BIOS from Lenovo's Drivers and Software page and it seemed to have locked my screen's brightness at the fullest setting. I've tried restarting the computer and adjusting it from the windows menu, but it still stays in one setting. It's too bright to use in dim situations now. Any help would be appreicated.

Hi Ericsheu68,
Please uninstall the Power manager application from the Control panel – Program & feature option and restart the system.
Download Hotkey feature from Lenovo support site and install it.
And for touchpad issue uninstall the touchpad driver (Elan or Synaptic) from the Control panel – Program & feature option and check restarting the system.
This won't affect to your system or with any of the application, you can reinstall it later from Lenovo support site.
Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Completely unsolvable: Cannot change screen brightness after I upgraded my ThinkPad's display.

I have a ThinkPad X240 which came with a 1366x768 TN panel, I hated it and so after a while I upgraded it to an IPS 1080p display. It works great and looks fantastic except it's stuck on max brightness inside of Windows 8.1. I cannot change the brightness inside of Intel HD graphics settings or inside of programs like Display Tuner. It doesn't work in Windows 10 either. The weird thing is, I can change the brightness just fine inside of Ubuntu. I've tried uninstalling the Intel HD drivers and reinstalling them, I've tried switching the drivers to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and none has worked. I feel like I've installed every single version of Intel's Graphics Drivers and that I've done everything and it still won't change the bloody brightness. NOTHING has worked except to just use Ubuntu, which is not an adequate solution. I've even gone as far as to update my BIOS and reset it to defaults, I've even pulled the CMOS battery. I've tried the version of the Intel HD driver from Lenovo for the X240 and I've installed the monitor.ini files. I've also just learned that during the Windows Boot Logo, the FN keys WILL change the brightness, but as soon as Windows is done booting, it stops working. This, coupled with the fact that brightness control works in Ubuntu means that this must be something related to Windows right? Brightness control works in BIOS. Dell L501x Screen Brightness

I've gotten most things working on my new laptop but I can't seem to figure out how to adjust my screen brightness.
The first thing I noticed was that there was no /proc/acpi/video directory. So I searched for where it might be:

The first three seemed like they might be useful since they are similar to the ThinkPad brightness values here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/La … brightness. Each one has only the number 15 in it. When I try as root to do
echo -n X >/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness # X being replaced by any number from 0 to 15
I get:

I have tried setting laptop-mode-tools to automatically echo different numbers when I unplug my laptop but they don't do anything. If you might be able to point me in the right direction, or know how to change the brightness on the Dell L501x, I'd greatly appreciate the help.

Just another thing: Do you get the synaptics touchpad work well? For me it works, but when I try to use two finger scroll, I can't use it when I lay my two fingers at the same time on the touchpad. I have to lay them one after another on the touchpad to use two finger scroll. Do you have the same problem or found a solution for this?

I own a Dell L401X i7 with Nvidia GT 425m and my touchpad also has problem. I use gpointing-device-setting to enable two finger scrolling. Sometimes it worked pretty well, sometimes when I put two fingers on the touchpad, my mouse jumped all over the screen. I don't know why.
Another thing I notice with this laptop is that my touchpad lock key does not work anymore (it used to work with the fresh installation of Arch)

PS: I don't why to hijack this thread of CanadaRox, I just want to share some problems some of you guys out there who is owning the same Dell laptop line.

T420i screen brightness issue

This one is a little hard to explain.
I should note that this only happens when I am not plugged in with an AC adapter.
On my brand new Thinkpad, my screen's backlight will brighten when there is a lighter image on the screen and dim when there is a darker image on the screen.
The way it works is when I transition from a lighter image to a darker one, the screen will slightly lower its brightness level about twice a second. It will do this 4-5 time, dimming the screen little by litte. It isn't a lot, the total difference between the 2 brightness level is about 1 brightness leve if I were to adjust it manually. It might even be less. The annoyance is how it changes bit by bit.
I'm led to believe that this is actually a feature with the notebook, but I just can't find a way to turn it off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: After a ton of fiddling, I finally got it fixed. In case anyone else wants to disable this, you have to go into the control panel, open up Intel GPU options, select Advanced, go to power, change power source to battery, and uncheck the box that says "Display Power Saving Technology"

Computer monitors may need to be calibrated. If you have AMD graphics you can go into the Catalyst control panel and adjust the gamma and white balance settings.

Can't Adjust Screen Brightness MBP 2010

Hi everybody, this issue is driving me nuts!
I've browsed all the sections on this forum and numerous threads and still no dice... Here's my issue:
-I own an late 2010 MacBook Pro (iOS dev machine), which was working perfectly up to the point where I had to update to Mountain Lion 10.8.5
After the update, brightness control on the keyboard is gone (F1 and F2 are duds), also no manual control anywhere else...what gives??
I've done all the SMC reset mumbo-jumbo without any avail....seriously, it sounds like the old fix for windows 98..."just reboot and it will be fine...or not". I also won't accept "go to a genious bar" as answer, since that doens't exist on these parts and any "procedure" over a apple device will take over a month to be done with.
So my questions are:
1-What where they thinking when they removed the frigging slider from settings?? Do they take us for some sort of idiots that can't be trusted to handle their brightness without using the keyboard?
2-Why can't I change the brightness on my $2500 laptop after a software update? Pray, do explain how this has come to be?
3-Is there any command (using terminal) that I can run to permanently set the brightness level or just to, you know...change it?
4-I'd like to scale this issue with a formal complaint towards apple, I find this to be unacceptable as a customer and I'd like to give them a piece of my mind. Can someone point me out on the proper path to do this?

As per the query you are facing issue with screen brightness for your ThinkPad T500.
Please go to start and type device manager, open device manager and check if there is any yellow mark in any of the adapter.

Random changes in screen brightness every few minutes (while working)

I am beginning to become unhappy with my new Thinkpad Twist. The laptop was just delivered and no changes to the setup were made.
The screen brightness changes while I use the device in an unpredictable way which is just annoying to me.
I prefer to work with full screen brightness and disabled the energy saving settings that would dim the screen after some minutes of inactivity. Still the screen just dims from time to time (also while I a am working) and also changes back to full brightness in a similarly unpredictable way. Those changes in brightness might take some minutes between them...
Do you have any ideas what software settings I should consider?
Also, the laptop appears to have an ambient light sensor. Could those changes in screen brightness be related to this sensor? FYI: Light conditions remained the same, no turning on or off the lights. Covering the position of the sensor did not induce any reaction.

Took me a while to find this but I believe this is the order of menus, links and drop downs to get to this feature.
Control Panel / Power Options / Change Plan Options / Change Advanced Power Settings / Display / Enable Adaptive Brightness / OFF / OFF

How to reduce screen brightness below standard level

How to reduce screen brightness below standard level in ThinkPad T520 ?
I think it is possible somehow, but I don't know how. I reduced brightness to zero using Fn key + End key, but it's not enough, I want to make screen darker, because my eyes get tired.

The latest Intel graphics driver (from Lenovo) is here:

This should provide a decent lower bound to brightness. If the install complains about unsupported hardware, force the install using Device Manager and Have Disk. (Something like this: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/11997-have-disk-method-for-windows-7-vista/ )
If that didn't work, try f.lux (https://justgetflux.com/). It has a software dimming feature (of course, this loses contrast).

Cant adjust screen brightness

Hi there,
I cannot adjust my screen brightness after replacing my screen cuz I'd broken my screen. The followings are my computer details:
Computer system: Window 8.0
Minotor: Thinkpad MaxBright Display 1600x900 (checked the device manager and show hiden device, this is the only two)
display adoptor: Intel Graphics 4000

Yes, i have just reinstalled Windows 7 64bits home premium on mt laptop (and I believe it's the latest version and with most present updates). After the installation, all the funtion keys are not working, e.g. Brightness adjustment/volumn adjustment etc.
I did some research before posting this post and followed the steps on "Resolving Problems with the Brightness of the Display" from HP website to try to fix this as well, however i did not have much luck.
One thing I haven't try is to download the drivers for HP, as there are too many drivers out there im not sure which one to download, so if i'm going that way would love to have someone's professional guide of which one should I donwload in order to fix this problem.
Btw, since the system is newly installed the HP support desktop usually appears before going into windows is not there anymore, don't know if this is relavent to the issue here.
Please help me with this, I really need to get my laptop going but now with such a bright sceen I have to ware a sunglasses

Thinkpad L440 - Left-Handed Bluetooth Mouse but Right-Handed Touchpad

I have my bluetooth mouse connected but I want to use it as a left-handed mouse. I can't seem to figure out how to do this without changing the configuration of the touchpad. I want to keep the touchpad right-handed. Is there any way to do this? Thanks!

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Touchpad setting on your ThinkPad L440.
Please go to Control panel – Mouse setting and in Buttons menu tick the check box “Switch primary and secondary buttons” this will change the complete setting for left hander users, and after applying those setting go to UltraNav menu and click on “Touch Pad Setting” you will new window touchpad properties in that expand Buttons option on “Left Button Action” set it to Primary Click and on “Right Button Action” set it to Secondary Click apply the settings and click on OK.
You can give a try on the above setting; it worked with USB external mouse but I am not sure with Bluetooth mouse. Check the screen shot from the below link

X200 screen brightness

I have just upgraded to Widows 7 and after the computer comes of out of sleep the screen brightness is a the lowest level but the value show it at the highest level (it is plugged in). I move the brightness up and down and it shows it happening on the green bars but no change. My setting, plugged in or not is always at the brightest level.
When I re-boot all is good, any thoughts out there?

How exactly are you adjusting the brightness? And does "sometimes" include waking up from sleep or hibernation, specifically? Detailed description is always good.
You can run ThinkVantage System Update to verify all drivers are current; especially Hotkey features, Video driver, Power Manager and Management drivers.

T440s: No on screen display of caps lock, volume, screen brightness, etc.

Hello all-
I updated the BIOS to 2.26 a while ago and ever since then there's no on-screen indication of caps lock on/off, screen brightness or volume when I change it. Since it seemed to be affected by BIOS, I updated again to 2.27 just now, but the problem persists. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help.
EDIT: Just fixed my own problem. I needed to update the Hotkeys Feature Integration by downloading the utility thingy from this page. Probably wasn't a BIOS thing after all.

I'm having trouble with xfce4-power-manager and the screen brightness osd on my thinkpad t530. There seem to be only 2 different brightness levels. If I change the brightness manually in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness it seems to work fine, but when i do fn-f8 or fn-f9 its either on full brightness or 11. Does anyone else have this working? It used to work fine.

MacBook Pro 13" screen brightness

I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro and find the screen brightness and contrast is much less than expected. It basically has to be turned up full on AC to be acceptable, which is very unexpected, since I am typing on a 16 month old MacBook Air now that is about the same at 80% of screen brightness. The contrast is less pronounced on the new machine, too, and the notion of 60% more color saturation seems faulty. I am going to return it and see if the Apple Store thinks this is normal or a faulty screen. Am I being unreasonable to think the new MBP screen should be at least equivalent to the original Air screen?

Yes, I agree that there is something different about the two displays. I conducted my own side-by-side comparison -- in the same room lighting, and also switching the places of the two machines -- and found at any given setting, the 13" MacBook Pro was darker than the MacBook Air. Furthermore, when I first started the machine, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not go off, no matter the lighting. Then, when I went to make these comparisons, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not come on.

So, I packed up the machine for a trip to the Apple Store and either an exchange or a return.

Satellite A100 (PSAA9): Win7 + screen brightness adjustment issue

I have installed Windows 7 64-bit on my toshiba A100 (psaa9) machine, and i cannot modify screen brightness anymore.
It is maximum brightness always. Fn key does not work, and neigther i can modify the brightness manually through nvidia control panel. nvidia driver is 7.15.11.7967, installed automatically with windows.

i've read suggestions about Value Added Package to be installed, but there is no package like this for my model.

ok, i tried to install VAP and Flash Card Utility for Satellite L500. first, installing Flash Card Utility i got invalid serial number error. i've read in forum that it might be due to inappropriate driver for my version on laptop or if i did not install VAP first. so, second, i tried to installed VAP, but i get value "Setup tvap error 0x8146045B" :(
according my display driver: it was nVidia driver automatically installed with win7. in fact there is no display driver for win7 64bit version on toshiba website... i guess i have more problems with display, as my secondary display blinks every time some system event like driver/program installation or usb device plugging-in or -out happens.

Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Problems (Switchable Graphics, Screen Brightness Adjustment, etc.)

Hi guys! I hope you can help me with this.
My laptop is a Lenovo U400 bought last April. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 8 Pro.
The Upgrade Assistant detected incompatibilities on the following softwares (I'll be mentioning only those I had problems with after the update.)
-AMD Catalyst Install Manager
-Catalyst Control Center
-Lenovo Energy Management
-Cypress Trackpad
After the update, the following problems occurred
-Windows kept prompting me about the incompatibility of Catalyst Control Center and Lenovo Energy Management
-When I check the Device Manager -->Display Adapters, My AMD Radeon HD 6470M was changed to HD 7400M and has an exclamation point on it indicating a problem. When check Properties it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
-I can't manage switchable graphics because the AMD Radeon driver has been stopped by the OS and Catalyst Control Center doesn't work. It says, "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
-My touchpad works but does not support multitouch functions.
-Screen brightness adjustment stopped working both on hotkeys and Power Options.
I tried the following actions to fix the problems:
-Downloaded the new softwares from Lenovo Support but the Catalyst Control Center and Cypress Trackpad still doesn't work. I also tried installing driver software from the AMD site but it still didn't work. [FAILED]
-I tried to use the Cypress Trackpad software for U300s/e and it fixed the problem with the touchpad [FIXED]
-Installed the Energy Management software for Windows 8 but when I click the 'Optimized Battery Health' button, it keeps reverting back to 'Maximum Battery Life'. [PARTIALLY FIXED]
-Resorted to 3rd party software to fix the Switchable Graphics (Catalyst 12.11 Beta from leshcatlabs.net) and it fixed the switchable graphics problem as well as the Catalyst Control Center problem. This is temporary until a working solution or update is available. [TEMPORARILY FIXED]
-All actions trying to fix the Screen brightness adjustment didn't work. [FAILED]

Yes I own U400 too and I'm using it now. To many forums been read, can't remember which one. Basically, u have to clean AMD and Intel drivers that come along with Win 8. Why? Because the Win8 driver database will lead the device ID "DEV_6760" (if you looking at display adapter device properties) to HD 7400 series instead of HD 6470M, again why? At the bigining only the HD 7400 series already "certified" by Microsoft, while the 6470M out of somewhere. Current CCC (or else) + 6470 drivers, contain also driver for 7400 series in same packages (at least until now, hopefully near future they will release an update). So you can gues where the windows will lead to? Yes 7400 series (certified one). This will explain also why the Energy Management didn't work to= "missing identifier" or we can say "hardware not match".
You have to find a "fix" driver which contain only HD 6470M and install it manually trhu "Have Disk" option, after you claan all AMD and Intel driver. If you success, then install the CCC from Lenovo Support and from ATI ( I use 12.11 Beta8 Net4 CCC - this is a must), but remember to unchek the AMD Display driver when you install both CCC, and leave the rest checked including Intel Component. Then you can download install anything you want =).
Leschat's driver did't work on my and "harm" the system. Believe it or not, I found the AMD 6470M standalone driver on HP website. They call it "SoftPack", which actually contain CCC software.
It's quite tricky thing, that's why not everyone willing to try. But I think it's worth to try, as the risk is not too deep, just backup anything befor you do it. Cheer
