Thinkpad R40 type 2682 - 6GU Bios flash problems

Hello all!  I made sure to check all of the R40 threads for information on this, and have been unable to find anything, I was hoping you could help me!
I recently purchased a Thinkpad R40 type 2682 - 6GU, and absolutely love it!  I maxed out the RAM (1 gig), and it came equipped with Windows XP professional.  It has the internal 802.11a/b wireless pci card.
I just purchased the IBM Thinkpad MiniPCI Atheros 802.11g card, and saw that I will need the latest BIOS
Version: 1.27
Release Date: 2006/06/30
1ouj24us.exe
installed for the card to work.  I checked, and I currently have 1.14 .
I downloaded the file straight from the Lenova Support & Downloads site.  I read the readme file, and followed all of the instructions, and it isn't doing anything.  I will give a detailed description of what I am doing, to see if you can pinpoint something I am doing wrong, or a setting somewhere I need to change.
1.   saved file as C:\bios\1ouj24us.exe
2.   opened start menu --> run
3.   typed in c:\bios\1ouj24us.exe --> enter
4.   clicked "run"
5.   accepted EULA
6.   chose "next" through the first 4 messages
7.   chose "next" on the next 1 of 4 messages
At this point, the computer restarts, logs into windows (no user accounts or passwords setup yet to avoid the mess of that during BIOS flash), loads like normal, and no further process on the BIOS flash.  I have done this at least 20 times on the same machine, and it still has BIOS ver 1.14 .
Can you please help?!?
Thanks in advance,
Lee

If it's a genuine IBM card, there should be a sticker on it saying FRU P/N 39T0081 or something like that, but would include a FRU P/N part regardless of the actual number.
A generic card will throw a "1802 error" in a R40, where the original one won't.
You can't update BIOS on a machine that has a bad battery or charging issues, BTW.

George

Ok so i tried to flash the bios and i succeeded but the problem is that i flashed with winflash, bios v5.2 and from my understanding that version is for the boards that support dual channel cpu-s. The problem is that now when i try to flash the bios with version 1.2 it tells me that the size does not mach the installed bios size or something like that. I would like to add that now with v5.2 i have a lot less options (settings) in my bios. How can i flash back to 1.2?

Stop BIOS flashing and tell us what you are trying to do.

You are trying to kill your board..That BIOS is not for your board.

  • 875P BIOS Flash problem

Used the live bios program to download and flash v1.4. (DOS procedure). Message that BIOS `flashed ok'. Will no longer boot. Used the AMI energency flash to go back to 1.2. Loads OK four beeps as required. Still no boot indicator 3 is on on the diagnostic lamps. Anyone had any experience in this space?

update to 1.4 bios kills motherboard!
Same prob'. borrowed some slower ram from a friend but still no go. Board is dead as hell. No blinky No beepy Not anything. Just a black screen and fan noise. I have exhausted all my resources and am in the rma process.
I like the board and will get another. I won't be updating the bios on the new board until there is a stable bios update.  :O  Wish I knew when that was gonna' be !!!
Sure would like to see something from MSI in consideration of this obviously well documented technical issue.
    Communication is the key!
Do you think MSI might reimburse me for my shipping and handling as well as business down time ?
    No ?
Good Luck with your machines people !

  • 6800U Bios flash problem

Hey, I have the NX6800Ultra and decided to wait for MSI to release their own bios based on the rev 2 nvidia reference bios to minimise the risk of stuffing somethign up.  Lately however the click in the sound are driving me insane, they happen all the time in World of Warcraft and ut2004's menu's.
I downloaded DrDos and nvflash 5.10 and the reference bios however when i do the command nvflash -5 -6 (bios).rom it tells me I/O error: Cannot open file :(bios name).  When I try to use WFFLASH.exe it tells me the file is not the correct format.
I have downloaded this bios several times and still get that error.  Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thankyou for your patience.

    aha yes exactly
i did the same thing at first
you needed to put in the ~ instaed of typing the whole thing
in answer to your question i did flash with a diferent make bios yes
not saying it will work with all but that one did ok,
have tryed a few to see which was the best.
but most people say dont mess with the bios flash unless you have too !!!!!

  • 870 BIOS flash problems

Well, I am a moron flasher! Didnt know the first thing of what I was doing, and didnt think anything of coming here first. Dumba**, I know. (facepalm) However, I am apparently one lucky dude as well, as I have had no problems whatsoever out of it. My only complaint is that it took the really cool MSI MILITARY CLASS MAINBOARDS loading screen off. Is there anyway to get that back short of reverting to old BIOS? If not, how would I get the old BIOS back? Didnt backup.
I also have another question that I'm not sure where to ask. So I will ask it here and hopefully someone can point me the right direction. I went into the BIOS and turned on RAID. I know my hd is raid compatible, but when I hit save and boot, it went back through the bios boot screen and then went into a raid screen, and then asked me where to boot from. I pointed it out and hit go and it acted like it was going to boot into windows. The windows emblem flashed and then screen went black with a message at the top (message was instantaneous, and I could not read it in time). Then it goes to a screen that tells me window couldnt load properly and gives me the option to run windows recovery manager or start windows normally. NEITHER OF THESE WORK FOR ME. The recovery manager tells me that it cant fix my problem, and starting windows normally results in a full cycle back through everything I just explained. My problem is that I cannot get back into the BIOS now at all. When I restart the pc and start hitting f11 it acknowledges that I have selected it, but jsut goes into the RAID screen again. WILL NOT GO INTO BIOS. What can I do or where do I post this question.
    Thanks.
(I realize this sticky is not for individual troubleshooting. As I said I really dont know where to post this question.)

First of all, to whomever moved this for me, THANK YOU!! Secondly, I'm not real sure how I would have checked that. But I have found a workaround to get the AHCI driver working and I will report back afterward. Would like to note that I did manage to get back into BIOS. Was hitting f11 and needed to be hitting delete.

  • Z87-G45 Ethernet and USB problems. And BIOS flash problems

Hi. I kind of have a problem and hope you guys can help me.
I got this motherboard yesterday but I got a major problem with the Ethernet connection. It will simply not work, it’s totally dead. I have tried to enable everything that has to do with the Ethernet (Settings/advanced/intergrated peripherials) but it still will not work.  There is no light at the back side that indicates that there is signal when I plug in the cable. I have tried the cable on my laptop so I know there is signal.
There is no problem installing windows, but I can’t install the drivers for the ethernet. I get an error message then that there is no hardware that can use this drivers.
Are there any places in the BIOS where I can enable it? How can I get this up and running?
And my USB driver is kinda messed up too. My 120MB UBS pen is found and can be used, but my 64Gb flash pen and my 500Gb USB HDD will now work with the USB. I only get the USB "ping" connection sound over and over and over and over again with the windows error, drivers not installed.
The other thing about the USB is that every time I restart the PC, I have to unplug the mice and put it into an other USB to activate it.
I have tried to flash the BIOS, but when I try (after pushing m-flash and connecting the USB and finding the file), the whole BIOS just freezes up and nothing happens. I try to wait a bit but nothing happens. I have to manually restart the machine by "force" (Turning the power to PSU off and on again. Ayone know if there is a problem with flashing the BIOS from USB? Or maybe that the USB system is messed up? Any other way I can flash the BIOS?
I have downloaded all the latest drivers and updated.
    Best regards
    Robert

Again do not try to use MFlash. Try the board outside case like suggested.
THis is making me frusterated now......
I have now had the motherboard on my wood table with a antistatic tablecloth and antistatic armband.
I only plugged in 1 ram, power, a monitor and mouse/keyboard(USB).
I manage to get the USB pen bootable so I could do the memtest and biost flash.
The USB ports are still unstable. I still have to move my mouse and keyboard from slot to slot when I restart the machine. It feels like if random USB conection is being turned off and on for every time I start the computer.
    I connected a HDD to install Windows 7 64bit.
The computer will still not read USB storage with larger then my 120mb storage in both the BIOS and Windows (I suspect that 1GB is the limit for some rason). It only shows that USB device was not installed.
After I isntalled the USB 3.0 drivers that came with the mother board, the USB 3.0 system just stoped working. I tryed to update the drivers to the latest ones, but they still dont work. The USB 3.0 drivers do work in BIOS, but the drivers that came with the motherboard does not support windows 7 64bit. Or this motherboard.....
The ethernet conection is still FUBAR. When I try to install the drivers from the CD, the "LAN picture" is still grayed out. And when I try to force install the drivers, nothing will accept the network connectin. Trying to install the Killer Network Manager just ends up in "No supported hardware found in your system". It is like that the ethernet system is turned totally off.... But in the BIOS is marked as enable.
I have tryed to installe Realtek drivers, Intel drivers and the Atheos drivers, but non of them will install, all just say that there is no network that supports this drivers.
I am at my wits end right now. During the last 15 years I have build about 20 computers and this motherboard is taking 1st price for being the worse one ever.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) dual bios flashing problem. One works, the other is bricked.

    Hi guys,
First post but not excatly the right scenario I wanted to post under.
This all started when MSI updater decided out of no where to download and auto run the bios updater. Before I had a chance to close it, it had started the update process before I could close a number of program's that I was running. Obviously my windows decided to freeze on me. I had no choice but to reboot. On the restart my PC was stuck on a F2/F6 (could be F9) loop. So I switched to BIOS B and all was good in the world.
My attempts to recover BIOS A have been unsuccessful. I tried clearing the CMOS first, this caused the pc to reboot every ten seconds in instead of the auto recovery. I have yet to reach post yet. So I tried the forum flash method flipping the switch after the tool had loaded up back to A. No luck on 1.7 Or 1.7 beta 181. Done a mem test which ruled out the RAM as well. Not sure what to try next.
As stated before everything works fine on B, A must be super bricked or something. Either that or the forum flash method failed or I'm just doing it wrong.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Makes it risky for any future updating of the good chip without a second one to have as a safety net.
RMA is always an option. Should be no problem getting it covered under warranty.
I'm contemplating an RMA but i honestly feel it is more hassle then it's worth while it's working fine on B. I just won't bother updating the BIOS unless they release something which seriously effect's/help's me. This is the first motherboard i have had with a dual BIOS so i'm usually quite safe when it come's to updating things like this. Just my fault for a moment of stupidity.

  • U330 BIOS flashing problem

    hi!
I have a very serious problem with my U330 ideapad.
i've upgraded BIOS to the newest version avialablem from lenovo (0FCN67WW).
    Everything went fine.
After using it for a day i've noticed the system is considerably hotter - ~61*C vs ~45*C idling with the ATI card enabled. I've tested on Windows 7 and two Linux distributions.
I've decided to downgrade to the previous version of the BIOS (i don't need VT-x THAT much) - 0FCN54W
Everything went fine. I boot up my system and mute the startup jingle in the BIOS and changle from Discrete to Switchable graphics, then "Exit saving changes". Noteboo reboots and i hear the jingle...
The BIOS won't save the settings! I can't change anything there, can't change to switchable graphics or enable NEtwork boot.
So i've decided i can do with the hotter laptop, but a WORKING one.
Unfortunetely when i try to flash it again with the (0FCN67WW) i get  "VERIFY ERROR" - what the hell does it mean? Is there any other way to flash BIOS? maybe with a bootable CD? Or is this a problem with the new BIOS?
I've found couple of people with this problem but no one answered them. I know there is MARK_LENOVO here who sometimes can solve problems. Could you help me? Please

Try to reflash again the latest version.

  • P67A-GD55 (B3) Bios flash problem

    Hello!
First of all sorry if this post exists but i havent so far found one and ive searched for 2 days.
Well something happened during the flashing of my motherboard and no when i power on the pc i get an error message saying "Disk read error occurred"
i downloaded the latest version of bios from msi (V4.3) it says i have version 1.J0 when i boot with the usb stick.
when i run the flash from my usb it says "Error: Problem allocating memory" then "Successful" but the bios ver is still 1.J0
So then i tried a Cmos reset and same problem..
it has been working fine up until this point, Does anyone know what went wrong or how to fix this?

Please, give us some détails about your PC : processor, HD ...
If you have a sandy bridge processor, you can stay with 1.J bios.
If you have an ivy bidge processor, you must have 4.30 bios.
I advise you tu use MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=116721.0
And you create a bootable USB with it.
Use "Method 1: Processing a BIOS Archive Directly (ZIP/RAR)"
With an archive (last one "4.3"), downloadable here : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=164135.0
If you want to stay with 1.J bios, you must ask a special archive to an admin.
After bios update, dont forget to clear CMOS and enter in the bios parameters by SUPPR (4.3 bios) or F2 (1.J).
Don't forget to put your system disk in first position for the boot.

  • Lenovo T60 BIOS flash problem

Hi There, and first of all sorry for my bad english!!
I have a problem with my T60, because i flashed a wrong (wide screen model) bios onto it. Now it not booting, some leds are blinking then nothing. I've tried, the wincris method to solve the problem, but i dont know the key combination to acces the bios in recovery mode. I've tried to remove the CMOS battery too, but nothing happened. Please help me! Thanks a lot

    Hello yigit,
I'll contact to Lenovo technical service for this issue. But before contacting i would like to let you know that I found official 40CN22WW(1.09) bios for G470/G570 from China support page and i flashed bios with that version. It flashed the BIOS but same problem happened when it comes to EC. When i clicked on OK for flashing EC it freezed and nothing move so around 10 mins later i had to reset laptop by unplugging the battery. But when i enter the setup i saw that all INVALID gone and the correct values are there. So i can see model, uid and serial number in BIOS now. But the EC is same old one which i typed in 1st post.
    When i saw this i wanted to flash BIOS with official 2.09 version. It flashed the BIOS and came to EC flashing. This time it become different. After flashing BIOS it asked me to flash EC, and i clicked on OK, after clicking OK around 6-7 seconds later this appeared;
    IHIS:EC write error in SMI!
and after this one it reset the laptop by itself, i checked in the BIOS and the serial, model changed to INVALID again but BIOS version is 2.09 and EC is 2.04. So I reflashed the BIOS with 1.09 and now in BIOS no more INVALID but EC is still 2.04. I don't know maybe this version has an EC protection or something like that. Or maybe my laptop BIOS or EC is corrupted. I wanted to flash my BIOS at 1st just because of those fan noise with almost 100% speed. Even the temperature is 45 the fan runs like F1 race car I'll take this with this BIOS now and when i go to Adana where I bought this laptop I'll ask for technical help there. Beside all those except FAN runs too fast, there is no problem on laptop everything works fine. But i noticed that boot time is faster with this 1.09 bios, i don't know maybe this is a coincidence.
Thank you for your interest and replies.

  • 645 Ultra MS-6547 BIOS Flash problems!

    Hi!
I've just tried to upgrade my BIOS from 1.7 to 1.9 for this board. I downloaded the version MSI Live Update 2 gave me - it created a boot and rescue disk.
Install of BIOS went well, was successful. After I rebooted my computer, I can't now see anything on the screen. It beeps at me 4 times, then searches the hard-disk and floppy-disk momentarily. It then beeps twice, then another beep comes up.
I can't seem to rescue the BIOS with CTRL-HOME either. Has anyone got any ideas? I followed the procedure to the letter!
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi!
Problem solved. It was an issue with the computer not recognising the AGP card properly. As I have dual monitors, I left the PCI card in the machine and removed the AGP card. After configuring the BIOS, I was then able to reinsert the AGP card - everything works.
    Thanks Assaf for your advice!

  • GT660R Bios Flash Problem - No screen but power/usb disk activity

    Hello everyone,
So, I got my new laptop, and the first thing I always do is update everything to the latest versions. Drivers, etc etc. As a matter of due course, I updated the bios for the laptop to E16F1IMS_30F from E16F1IMS_305. Everything went well, and I made sure to use the AFUDOS utility rather than from inside windows (it was inside the zipfile so, I figured that was safe).
After I did the update, I noticed that the bluetooth device and webcam both disappeared. This was after an EC reset. I figured since I used a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, that's pretty much a huge blow. So. I booted the usb key again and then did the AFUDOS on the previous version (305). I had to google for this, but I ended up finding it for download (not on MSI's site sadly) here; http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/BIOS/Msi/MSI-GT660-Notebook-Bios-305.shtml
Once I had flashed, I recognised the mistake. It was for GT660 not the R. However, I pressed on, did the EC reset step and booted the laptop. That's when I noticed. No screen.
The fan spins up, the disk drive is accessed, and if I press the ctrl+home combo when booting, I see that the usb key is accessed, however, that's as far as things get. No text/picture on the screen. I have left it alone for 15-20 minutes, nothing. The buttons up at the top of the laptop 'work'. The fan increase does increase, etc etc.
I tried to use the fix my usb key utility, but all I have is a virtual machine. It doesn't want to run inside it. It says 'no MSI mainboard' and bugs out.
       Help!!!
       Regards
       S.

    Why you did that?
    Flashed to old bios?
And why you flashed at all?
I am a long time pc user. I come from the days of bad bios's causing all sorts of troubles. I have an intel SSD x25-m in an external usb3 enclosure. I ~believe~ that this would help with my inability to boot from a usb3 device.
Quote from: Svet on 10-January-11, 18:49:27
You flashed from 30F to 305, then again to 305?
    And then no boot?
the machine was on 305, I then flashed to 30F (doing an EC reset). I lost bluetooth and camera, so I flashed back to 305 (again, doing an EC reset). Then I lost display. I used the afudos utility that came inside the bios zipfile.

Clarify what you are done exactly as your description is very messed up and vague
I hope this clarifies things. Ideally, I am wondering how to enable the bios recovery stage on the gt660. I believe/hope that the bios bootblock loader is still intact. I see usb/disk/cd-rom activity.
