Now im having a conflict of sorts when i try to update:

  • Can anyone of you who own a Thinkpad R61 Share your experience?

I Just get a Thinkpad R61, and it freeze on Windows Vista 3 time out of 6 boots, and it is making a high pitch noise. I do a few test with it before I return to the dealer for replacement. I didn't even bother to install Linux on it because if it is a hardware problem, it would be waste of time, and might get reject for replacement --.--!
    Here is what I get:
I try it with xubuntu 8.04, (the closest Live CD I can get). The high pitch sound still occurs, however, everything else seem working fine. NO freeze, no nothing.
I boot up into Windows Vista safe mode with network(wifi). Everything work fine and no high pitch noise. I would be really happen if it stay like this every time I boot my system.
I took the laptop apart in to a point where wouldn't effect the warranty and boot my system into both normal and safe mode with network. The Fan is not moving, the CD-rom is not moving, and the HHD is moving however not the one who make the noise.
I do a CLI ram test, and doing the whole thing, no high pitch noise is made.
At last the most making sense test, put my ear right in front of the speaker, and none of them are making any sense. in fact, I hear less noise when I do that.
So clearly, sense many people say it is one of the most silent and coolest laptop ever make in the Thinkpad R series. The high pitch noise is not one of the feature I offer. And Sense this noise is not make by any move part, The only two possibility is the audio chip or the graphic chip. It can't be any of the moving part because they also work under safe mode which make no high pitch noise. And it is not the CPU, RAM, or Battery making the Noise, sense they work the same under safe mode, and CLI mode. The only thing that is power up that is not power up in safe mode or CLI mode are the Sound chip, and the Graphic acceleration. Sense I can't really take those thing apart without avoid the warranty. I don't really know which of the one is making that high pitch noise. You might think I am crazy to think that non movie part is making noise, but it is true. Any that is my story. hehe
I hear all over the place that Thinkpad are great laptop, but it really doesn't give me a good first impression. So How's your experience with your Thinkpad R61?
Last edited by ioky (2008-10-04 10:31:33)

Some Thinkpads are known for high pitch noises, with many newer models it seems to be related to running on battery. See here for details. I have this problem on my T61, but as I have it plugged in most of the time I didn't really care.  I had problems with the preinstalled vista as well, no freezes, but I couldn't get wireless to work. Apart from that, I'm really happy with the laptop, the build quality is just great, it has this rock solid feeling to it and it works like a charm with Arch. The pre installed windows was clearly below my expectations, but I'd buy this machine again any time.

  • DVI/HDMI connection for Thinkpad R61 (with IBM 2504 Docking station) and Samsung LNT4665F LCD TV

I am trying to connect my laptop (Thinkpad R61) with my TV (Samsung LNT4665F) using a DVI/HDMI cable. Because the R61 doesn't have a DVI port, I am using it in the IBM 2504 Docking station. I have docked the computer, connected the DVI/HDMI cord (using HDMI in 1 on the TV, which I believe is the only DVI accepted HDMI on the TV). I followed the Samsung instructions to then hit "Fn-F7" on the laptop. Unfortunately, nothing is happening. It doesn't appear that any signal is pushing out to the TV.
I am not very tech savvy. Can someone please tell me what I need to do?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone I found this r61 on eBay to replace my dead t60 :-( anyway I thought id ask you guys before I spent most of my money again from what I can see the only problem is the supervisor password is it removable? It also looks like a 15.4"

    No reason to be sorry.
Please do note though, as George mentions, discussions about security feature circumventions, which include password hacks/etc, aren't allowed per the Community Rules.
Since you haven't purchased the machine yet, you should ask the seller if they will be removing any BIOS passwords (power-on, HDD, supervisor) prior to shipping the unit. If they can't, or won't, the best advice is to stay away from the machine altogether. All of that said, the seller claims that the machine is only being sold for parts. So you'll want to keep that in mind.
    Regards.

  • Upgrading Thinkpad R61 from Vista-32Bit to Win7-64Bit_stuck & need Help

I'm in the mids of upgrading my ThinkPad R61
I've added memory to 4Gb and a newer drive 320Gb
I've purchased the Win7 Home Premium Vista to Win7 upgrade (CDs).
Can I upgrade this R61 laptop to Win 7-64Bit OS?
Thus far, I cannot boot from the Win7 Upgrade CD
So I tried with a USB external DVD.  I got past the Boot stage, however, it's prompting me for a CD/DVD driver before it can continue to load.
I am sensing that I will be prompted multiple times for additional drivers (perhaps 64Bit) before I ever complete the upgrade process.
What is the quickest & easiest path to upgrade my laptop to Win7-64Bit.  (At least, to the point where I can boot from the upgraded drive).
    My ThinkPad R61 Model =  #8932CTO

    Thanks GMAC-R60
My intention was to actualy do a clean install to Win7 -64Bit.
Perhaps it has everything to do with using an upgrade (32-Bit & 64-Bit) version CD of Win7 from Vista?
When I tried to upgrade to 64Bit, it eventually took me to a screen prompting for a CD/DVD driver to continue the upgrade.  I suspected it was looking for a 64bit driver (likely the SATA controller), so I opted out thinking it will be lloking for more drivers through the upgrade process.
I then successfully upgraded it to Win7 - 32Bit version.
However, I would like to take advantage of the 64Bit speed & useability of the additional RA I have inside the laptiop.
I noticed that Lenovo have a listing of Win7 64Bit drivers under their Support section.  If one was to download and expand them them to a folder, would it be possible to essentialy upgrade to 64Bit?
Or, perhaps get CD copy from Lenovo with all the required files & drivers?

  • ThinkPad E455 Battery Reduced to 80% when Power Off in One Week

Previously, I have a problem with my relatively new ThinkPad E455 battery. The battery drains when the laptop is powered off (see https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/ThinkPad-E455-Excessive-Battery-Drains-When-Power-Off/m-p/2105732 ). I have updated my BIOS and power manager to overcome the problem.
Recently, I was on a holiday and I turned off my laptop for one week. Before I turned off my laptop, the battery gauge shows 100% of battery capacity. Today, when I turn on my laptop, the battery gauge shows 80% of battery capacity, even though I did not use the laptop for seven consecutive days. The power drains is not as excessive as the previous one as I described in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/ThinkPad-E455-Excessive-Battery-Drains-When-Power-Off/m-p/2105732 but this problem really bothers me. Is there something wrong with the battery? Or perhaps some other configuration? FYI, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

    sgegreen wrote:
At this point I have to assume one of very few possibilities: 1. The 1.17 BIOS fix for power to the USB ports doesn't work, 2. The Computrace code in the BIOS is waking the laptop up daily to call its manufacturer's server, or 3. Something else on the motherboard remains powered and causes the leakage. Our E555 isn't left powered off for long so we haven't noticed the problem. To eliminate the above possibilities, you could try removing the battery after switching the E455 off and replacing it when you need to switch the laptop back on. This would tell you if the battery discharges even when removed from the laptop. If it does, the battery is probably faulty, lithium batteries are usually good at retaining their charge.I hope that the newer BIOS version will be released soon. As for number 2, what does "The Computrace code in the BIOS is waking up the laptop..." mean? Can I disable it? It will be good if nothing is waking up my laptop when it is off.
I am considering to remove the built-in battery (ThinkPad E455 only has one battery, and it is built-in), but the user manual says that the battery removal should be done by a technician. I am afraid that removing the battery myself can cause a damage and violating the warranty (my laptop is less than 6 months old). If there is a user manual or videos or anything helpful about removing the built-in battery for ThinkPad E455, perhaps I will try it.

  • Rescue and recovery ThinkPad R61

    Hi,
I have a ThinkPad R61 (Product ID 8918A22) that was originally delivered with Vista installed.  When making the purchase the Lenovo consultant emphasised that I needed to make R&R discs BEFORE retrograding to WINXP.  I know that the first thing I did when I received the laptop was to produce three DVD's.  It is too long ago to remember exactly what I did but I marked the DVD's 1 to 3 with 'Restores to Vista'.
Over the years I have done 2-3 restores using the Lenovo supplied discs to overcome sluggish behaviour. Today I did a restore using the 1st Vista DVD that I made years ago. However, it only restored to WinXP??  Additionally there was no request during this process to insert either of the other DVD's. The folders on the 1st DVD are BOOT, PREBOOT and TVTOS and a file in the root directory called BOOTMGR. The 2nd and 3rd DVD's have a folder called RRbackups.  A search of the 1st DVD for *vista* threw up D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\PCDR2D3VIDEO-VISTASPECIFIC.DLL and D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\VISTAHELPPANE.EXE.  By contrast the Lenovo supplied R&R disc has folders I386, MFG, PREBOOT, RECOVERY, SWWORK and several files in the root directory. Not surprisingly, a search for Vista on the Lenovo R&R disc showed no hits.
Several hours of browsing around various webpage and threads located advice on how to make 'Rescue Media' using ThinkVantage.  I see from one article that you need 1CD and 1 DVD to generate Vista Rescue Media.  This compares to my three DVD's????
From what I have written, can anyone deduce where I stand at the moment in regard to my ability to recover to Vista rather than XP?  Does it appear that I stuffed up the making of the Vista R&R discs and I need to buy recovery media from Lenovo if I want to recover to Vista?  I still have the Microsoft label on the bottom of the laptop where I can just make out the words Windows Vista.  The Product Key is clearly legible.
Thanks in advance for any assistance or insight you can give.  Please don't be too techo in any replies because I'm not overly tech savvy.

    Welcome to the forum!
Personally, I'd just borrow a retail copy of Vista installation disk and install it fresh, then apply any updates that you deem fit. Original Vista media would be six years old now, and require updates as well.
You might have to give Microsoft a call in order to activate it, though.
My hunch is that the media you have will not do anything but install XP...which is clearly not what you want.
    Good luck.

    George

  • Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."
It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

If you are running WIndows 7 on your X230, go into Power Manager and find the Battery Maintenance function.  Then run a Reset cycle on the battery and see how it comes up.
The microprocessor in the battery can get out of sync with the battery capacity the X230 think should be available and that can cretae the sort of issue you have described.  Resetting the battery will resync the on board micrprocessor in eth battery with the expected battery capacity in Power Manager.

  • Thinkpad W530 Battery Problem

    Hi everyone,
The little latch on my thinkpad W530 is broken, resulting the battery to be loose sometimes. My thinkpad warranty is still active, and I want to know if lenovo can provide me with a new battery.
Here is a picture of the battery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Chances are if you don't have accidental warranty, they won't replace it.
I broke the same latch on my W520, and it doesn't seem to cause issues other than the battery being a little bit loose. I just used a bit of tape to attach the battery to the machine.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T510 Battery?

I recently (about 2 months ago) purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 laptop. Ever since I got it, I have the brightness on 50%, and only use it to surf the internet. My battery life is 2:50 at the maximum.
I have a warrenty for the laptop, could I call in and get another battery for free?
It is quite inconvienent to have to charge and recharge at least twice every day. It makes portability almost impossible.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do you have discrete graphics? If so, it sounds about right for an untweaked system. There are a few tricks to battery life optimization with the NVidia GPU involving PowerMizer.
    http://somemorebytes.com/wp/index.php/software/nvpmmanager/
Enable PowerMizer, and use Max power save on battery.
Also put your CPU into the lowest speed in Power Manager's advanced mode (battery only; AC should be adaptive).
    Also, defrag.

If the second battery is a *known good* example that charges in another machine, then the charging circuit on the motherboard has been damaged.

  • Thinkpad 570 battery

I have a really nice 570 with charger and external floppy drive but unfortunately it has a dead battery. Might anyone know where I can get a good battery? I am afraid of the ones being sold on eBay.
    Thanks,
    Tom

I feel your pain. it's been years since I've had a 570/E with any type of working battery, and I absolutely love these machines.
eBay, as always, is a hit or miss. You might get lucky and find NOS (new old stock) ones once in a blue, but you have to keep looking. And, with NOS batteries, life is questionable. But I'd take that over any refurbed or no-name brand.

  • Thinkpad 390X battery

    Hi.
Is there any way to get 390X battery in Russian Federation from Lenovo distributors ?

    Welcome to the forum!
IBM stopped producing batteries for your machine a couple of years ago, so chances of getting a new one from Lenovo are slim to none.
Watch for NOS ( new old stock) units on eBay...and hope that the seller is willing to ship to Russia....
