Thinkpad s230u - Intermittent Dim

Hi,
I am experiencing some intermittent screen dims (no consistency on timings) whilst both plugged in and running on power.
I have checked the windows power management console
I have checked the Intel power management console
as well as Lenovo power management console
I have set all of the above power options to perform optimally without dimming and it still occurs.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Hey there antondutoit and welcome to the forums!,
I believe you are referencing the ambient light sensor. Poking around I was able to find another thread similar to this issue, and I think it points us in this direction.
You may want to adjust the settings on this to see if it helps in your case. Check out this nifty knowledgebase article.
The solution for these types of symptoms:
To disable this or make changes to the settings, go to the Advanced Section of the Windows Power Settings >> Display >> Auto Dim.
I hope this helps!

  • MSATA or 2.5" SSD for Lenovo Thinkpad s230u Twist?

The Subject sort of explains itself, however I will add some more infromation for convenience sake:
Generally speaking I think of myself as fairly knowlageble about computers and their hardware. When it comes to laptops however I'm not so knowlagable, thus I would like to get a professional oppinion on the subject of SSD for laptops.
So I'm thinking of getting a Crucial m500 SSD (I'm so happy with my older m4 that I have full confidence in it's stability and speed) with 240GB of storage space, it comes in both mSATA and in the regular 2.5" x 7mm format. Thus I ask wheter or not to choose 2.5" or mSATA for my Thinkpad s230u Twist. It already has a 500Gb  Hitachi harddrive provided originaly by Lenovo, thus if I choose the mSATA I would be able to have a total of 740Gb of fast and reliable storage.
What are your oppinions on such an installation? should I just go for mSATA or choose the regular 2.5" format?
    Rainmaker91
P.S: I should probably just inform that Lenovos solutions is not an option due to it's extreme price and the drives beeing outdated. Also I don't need the Lenovo warranty and support due to the "Warranty" provided by law in my country.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have replaced my 500GB HD with a 2.5" Samsung 830 series, 128 GB SSD. After researching the benefits of both the "Main Drive" socket and the mSATA socket, I learned that in virtually ALL Laptops, the mSATA socket is limited to only mSATA II speeds, ie. 3 GB/sec, while the Main Drive socket can handle the 6 GB/sec characteristic of the SATA III properties. This higher speed is, after all, why one would go to the trouble of replacing the Drive to begin with. I did also put a 120 GB mSATA SSD in my WWAN socket (I have an Edge 530), where I store most of my new programs for easy, fast retrieval...So, I would definitely go with the 2.5" SSD.....fruhlpmd.....

  • Thinkpad s230u water spill - minor

    Hi everybody,
About a year ago i purchased the s230u, and had no problems with it. However, i spilt water on it and turned it on to try to salvage my work, and whenever there was a sound it made a static noise, or something like that. I tipped it over to try to make the water drip out, then it shut down. I need my computer for work tommorrow, please help.
    Thank you,
    Sarah

    Hi Sarah,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Static noise on ThinkPad S230u.
As you have mentioned that the water was spilled on the laptop, and after that you are facing this issue, for this issue you can check it out in keeping the system idle for 48 hours, and you have to remove the battery from that.
You can also use a air blower with low speed to get it dried up quickly, or else you can visit nearby by service center for further assistance.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thinkpad T420 Intermittent Freezing / Lockup

Thinkpad T420 Intermittent Freezing / Lockup
My Thinkpad T420 keeps intermittently permanently freezing / locking up. However it seems that anything that uses hardware acceleration makes the system suddenly lockup.  For instance, boot into Windows 7 and open Chrome Browser play a YouTube Video and it will lock up or enable the Windows Areo Theme and try looking at the event manager will also make the system permanently lock-up.
Here is the troubleshooting that I have tried so far:
Fresh OS installation from the recovery partition and update using Lenovo System Recovery but problem still persists. ( includes updated BIOS )
Run Lenovo Diagnostics ( 20 times pass over ) and no fault reported. ( no test in Diagnostics for CPU Graphics )
Tried a known good harddrive and loaded Windows 7 and applied Lenovo System update and problem still persists.
Tried using a known good memory module ( Lenovo T420 memory module ) tested separately in each memory bank, the problem still persists.
Used the machine with out the Battery, using just power cord and problem persisted.
Used the machine with just the battery and the problem still persisted.
Using the machine with Battery connected plus power adapter and problem persists.
Removed the DVD drive and the problem persisted.
Removed the Wifi Card and the problem still persisted.
Removed the 3GS card and problem still persisted.
Swapped over another keyboard from another Thinkpad T420 and problem still persists.
Disabled Fingerprint reader in BIOS and problem still persists.
Confirmed no freezes if Thinkpad is booted into the BIOS and left for some hours.
Booted machine with a live Linux Mint 16 DVD and problem still persists ( Freezes straight away )
No freezing when the laptop is used in Windows 7safemode.
No freezing when the laptop is used with Linux Mint in safe mode though Mint does confirm that hardware acceleration has been disabled.
CPU tempertures are within the normal range.
The troubleshooting confirms that the problem is a hardware fault. So I logged a warranty call and explained that it was likely a fault with the System Board or the CPU. The engineer replaced the system board and the problem still remained.
So it look most likely that the integrated graphics seem to be causing the problem, especially when the system freezes when hardware acceleration is used.  Has anyone else had a similar problem. I'm now waiting for the next plan of action form Lenovo. I did confirm the system freezing problem with Windows 7 and Mint 16 after the engineer replaced the system board and before he left. I'm still waiting on Lenovo getting back.

I done extensive testing, it was not the hard drive. It turned out that the integrated graphics on the cpu were faulty. The CPU has since been replaced and the problem solved. As per my first post, anything that used hardware acceleration would cause the freeze hence my suspicion about it being the cpu or planer board. It would freeze in windows and when using a live mint Linux cd, so the mint live cd ruled out the hard drive and preloaded software on it.
    Thanks,

  • ThinkPad S230u Trackpoint mouse and touchpad problems.

My Tackpoint keeps pulling mouse random directions slowly random times... (Same bug that my older X61 Thinkpad)
Can that be caused by static charge or something??
And Touchpad... How i can turn it off??
    Is that button really missing??
I mean "Disable Touchpad" button with FN shortcut

    Hi Finlander,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m really sorry to hear that you are having trouble with Touchpad and TrackPoint in your Lenovo S230u.
I would recommend you to update the Ultranav Driver to the latest version and check.
In order to disable the touchpad, go to Control Panel -> Mouse -> Ultrnav -> Uncheck Enable Touchpad checkbox ->OK.

    Hope this helps!

  • IPhone 4s iOS 6 intermittent screen dims and Ringer volume notification

Seem I am getting intermittent problems which look to be increasing in frequency.
One problem is the screen dimming as though I have turned the screen brightness down to minimum, with no apparent reason.
I've checked the brightness setting and it is set to my usual screen brightness, auto brightness is always off. Touching the screen or home button does nothing and switching apps has no effect either. No particular app is being used at the time so can't pin it down to a buggy app causing it.  The only way to restore the brightness is to switch off the phone via the power button.
A similar problem is the dark grey square containing the ringer volume setting, set to the minimum one square appearing without touching the volume buttons. This stays on screen in a similar way to the screen dimming in that. Nothing apart from powering the phone off will remove it.
Also having problems with reduce volume button, could this be the cause of all these problems? This problem is when I'm reducing the volume it actually increases it to the maximum first before reducing it. Again it is intermittent.
Any one with same or similar issues?

    Sorry for delay in reply.
I've done the above but to no effect this is still happening.
    It is intermittent.

  • ThinkPad S230u won't wake up after IRST sleep since BIOS update

I am using S230u (i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD+24GB SSD) with Windows 8 x64 for half a year now and so far everything has worked just fine.
I have IRST enabled and when I put it in sleep mode, it automatically saves the state to SSD after an hour. That has worked great so far - I can put it to sleep for short periods and get it up instantly and if I put it to sleep for longer it will save to SSD and not use battery - when I wake it up, it flashes the red LED for a while and system comes back online.
However, this Friday I installed BIOS update - updated from 1.57.1.57 to 1.61.1.61 (at least according to System Update history).
Since Friday when I try to wake it up it does not work if the sleep is longer than an hour (or so) and the state was stored to SSD. The red led keeps flashing, but nothing happens - after around 1-2 minutes the system reboots and Windows loads again.
I want to downgrade the BIOS and doublecheck that this is the issue - perhaps it is some other Windows or Lenovo patch, so I want to be sure.
I have already located the BIOS drivers downloads (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032000) and am wondering if downgrading BIOS to check if this is the issue can break anything with my laptop?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

We are working on the BIOS defect that causes this failure.  I'm very sorry for this inconvenience.
While downgrading the BIOS is a possible work-around, my advice is to simply disable the 30-Day standby feature in Lenovo Settings, until the new BIOS to fix this issue is released.

  • Please help - Victim of the disastrous Twist - Thinkpad s230u

I got fancied by a 2 minute preview of the Lenovo Twispad by a store associate and some online videos and decided to buy it. Now I am repenting my decision like a drug addict in rehab. I have multiple issues with this. I would've returned it, got it replaced because it is still under warranty but the problem with that is that I've relocated to a different country and the warranty is not honored internationally.
Below is the list of issues I have in order of severity. The first one is killing me and I need immediate help with that. The others, I can still live with but would love  a resolution.
    1) ** Severe ** . My twist pad with Win 8 automatically pop up the Win 8 Metro tiles home screen with the search bar (sliding out from the right edge) open on the press of certain keys. These are a bunch of keys like any keys in the number row and quite a few other keys like K S, O P etc.  I almost cannot do anything with it. I am typing a URL in the browser address bar and it shows the home screen. I am clicking on a pictures, it shows the home screen. As if , somebody has been hitting the windows key. I checked , the keys are not stuck or pressed. I cannot seem to find a solution for it. Please help.
    2) Levono tried to be too fancy and ambitious in making this piece of crap but failed miserably at it. The roation of my twistpad is so messed up. Everytime, I start up my computer in laptop mode, the rotation is typically reversed. The side button to flip the orientation or to absolutely turn it off does not work at all. Before I start my work, I have to literally take the whole twistpad and flip it multiple times randomly like an idiot before it gets the right orientation. The software option to turn off rotation also does not work. Man, is this sucky ? No, sucky is an understatement.
    3) The wi-fi does not connect automatically, everytime the computer wakes up form sleep or restarted, I need to click on the wifi icon, select the network and click on it to connect.
Please suggest me soem resolutions for it. I have searched and searched but did not find anything that is helpful in real sense.

Run Lenovo System update until it wont find anymore updates... After that manually update your BIOS to 1.62 HERE: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032000
Report after you have done those...

  • ThinkPad Twist (s230u) : HD400 - Memory Upgrade

I have a ThinkPad s230u with Intel HD Graphics 4000. My problem is that it work with only 32mb (see below) of memory for video, I can not run GTA IV because this, I already watch video in web wich people running GTA IV on HD graphics 4000, another problem is that this ultrabook has 4GB of memory but if I run Google Chrome and League of Legends the memory's usage rises for 90~95%.
If I put more memory the, memory for video will increase?
    Moderator Note; subject edited

    Hello,
The RAM in the Lenovo ThinkPad S230u is soldered in place and cannot be upgraded.
From the screen shot of the HD4000 settings you provided, it appears the video card as 32MB of dedicated RAM, and is additionally using 1760MB of system RAM for a total of 1792MB RAM allocated for video. It could be, though, that the game requires a larger amount of dedicated RAM, though.
I am away from S230u so cannot check this, but there may be an option in the BIOS/UEFI firmware to adjust the amount of RAM used by the HD4000.
You may also wish to check with the game authors to see if they have any specific recommendations about using a ThinkPad S230u with their software.
One thing to keep in mind is that the S230u is an ultrabook class laptop, which means a "thin and light" system optimized for things like running office productivity apps and web surfing.  It is not a gaming laptop like Lenovo's IdeaPad Y series which come with the video and cooling subsystems required to play demanding modern games, and weigh about twice as much (or more) as the S230u.

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u and ThinkPad x201 Tablet Creating Recovery Media

    Hi Lenovo Customer Support,
    ThinkPad s230u( model number: 3347CTO) - Window 8 Pro.
Before I start using my Laptop, I want to create a Recovery Media as is shown when installed with all partitions. Meaning if I format all contents of Laptop I want a recovery Media brings back computer as I go it in the first place include all partitions. By default there are five hidden partition and one ntfs.
What is the procedure how to Create a Recovery Media? I heard only Flash Recovery exist for Window 8.
Also I have Window 8 Pro but when I tried this link procedure http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Create-Win-8-recovery-media-in-ThinkPad-Thi... I saw only Window 8 option and even then it reboot and did not work.
Also I did Flash Recovery and Took Faster with USB 3.0 Flash around 10 min around 16GB Space
Is it possible to do CD Recovery too ?
    ThinkPad x201 Tablet(Model Number: 30933PG) - Wundow 7 Pro
Can you do Flash Recovery Media and CD Recovery Media under Window 7 Pro  Enviro.
If you upgrade Hard drive to 1T and RAM to 16 G RAM  , Can you Still do the Recovery Media?
What is the Procedure to successfully create Recovery Media.
    Thanks.
    saad

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • IOS6 update causes 4s to intermittently dim.

My iPhone 4s developed this problem after the updated to IOS6. The screen will intermittently auto-dim all the way to near black. Sometimes this will even happen while I'm actively using an app... any app! To get the screen back to it's original brightness setting I have to be in a darkened room so I can see the faint images on the screen and navigate to Settings and Brighness. Sometimes I'll find the slider all the way down, but at other times the slider has not moved at al, the screen is just as dark as it can get without being completely off. I just have to touch the slider and the screen jumps back to being bright.
Is anyone else having this problem? What is the solution?

I have not contacted AT&T yet, because I was hoping this was an IOS 6 bug.
So this is normal when upgrading IOS?
I thought once you got the iTunes confirmation it wasn't possible for it to relock.

  • S230u reinstallation and auto-rotate lock button

Some time ago (after switching to SSD) I reinstalled Windows 8 and upgraded to 8.1. I have made a fresh installation as I could not get the image copying from HDD to SSD to work properly.
The OS has been working great so far, but the one thing I am really missing is the auto-rotate lock button next to the power button. It does not work at all and never has.
I do have the System Update 5 software for installing packages from Lenovo and have installed all of the drivers it recommended except for Password Manager and IRST which I do not need.
I have also manually installed the 'Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad' package which I expected to be the thing I was missing.
Is there any additional software that I should install or something that I should enable to get the functionality?
I know Windows+O does the same thing, but when you are in tablet mode that key is not that handy.

  • Trackpad alternatives in other brands? s230u Twist Yoga

I had been excited about my planned purchase of Lenovo's Thinkpad s230u Twist until today.  I have purchased Thinkpad laptops for the last 7 years, I LOVE THEM!  I purchased an Ideapad G510S for my daughter's birthday from the Outlet store in July 2014 and received it with a non-working touchscreen, not a big problem. After troubleshooting it with techsupport it was determined to be a hardware issue.  My daughter didn't request a touchscreen in the first place so we decided to forego the hassle of setting up a return, waiting, then setting up another computer.
When contacting Customer Service (?) they wouldn't even reimburse the price difference for the identical machine sans touchscreen feature which only came to around $30.  On top of that, I'm also a Working Advantage member.  This has unfortunately left me with a bad taste in my mouth.  The poor service today will make me rethink my decision; my R61 has been an amazing machine and will have to hold out a little longer while I find comparables.
Does anyone have suggestions on a comprable convertible to the s230u i5?  How about the Yoga also with i5, which was to be the next purchase in the next few weeks for my older daughter?
I would miss most of all the trackpad "Nurple" as it was affectionately named in my home.

  • Twist s230u 3347; unable to project to 2nd monitor via DisplayPort

After a series of visits to the Repair Depot for LCD light going dead, machine has been working as expected until this week.  I connected the device to a big screen monitor (plasma TV), mini-DisplayPort->HDMI connector and nothing.  Attempting to troubleshoot the issue, connected the same route to my 55" LCD TV at home, same result - nothing.  I downloaded latest Intel driver (Intel HD Graphics 4000 ver 10.18.10.3496), hoping that would solve the issue but same result, upon connection & attempting to force projection/extension/duplication (of screen), nothing.
For G&G's, I took back to the store where I purchased it, just to see if their adapter & display would have different results, NOT.
Anyone experienced this issue and know of a result?  or just have some thoughts to try?
    p.s.
I use the device regularly connected to two external monitors via a Thinkpad USB 3.0 Dock and everything works perfectly.  I have not tried, nor am I interested in doing so - I expect the DisplayPort to work (I successfully conducted a meeting in this manner) as it did prior to the four trips to the Repair Depot (January).

    Hello,
Unfortunately, I'm not sure of how to troubleshoot this further, since I cannot repro the problem myself.
In that case, the only suggestion I really can think of is to contact support again directly and let them know what is happening.  They may have some additional troubleshooting steps or recommendations for you to take with the ThinkPad S230u.
