Thinkpad S440: installing a clean copy of windows 7 professional

Hi there,
I wanted to install a clean copy of windows 7 professional on my thinkpad s440. With the initial install, I've had peculiar issues with some devices and the Lenovo software. The power manager caused a massive slowdown on resuming from sleep if I had memory-intensive applications open, which was completely resolved when I uninstalled it. There's been other issues with WiFi stability, webcam use and mousepad behaviour among others.
I have a couple of questions before going ahead with this. Firstly, the laptop has no visible signs of any COA or windows 7 product key. As the laptop only comes with the recovery partition and no disks, how do I know the windows 7 installation will activate successfully or that I won't need a CD key during the install?
If I use the digitalriver file to create USB bootable install media, is there a md5 checksum or something else I can do to ensure what I download is not corrupted or altered in any way? It's not easy using the internet without connection errors happening over a few hours especially with what I have to use in China!!
Any help appreciated!

My question is basically how to reinstall windows 7 without the Lenovo bloatware, especially if I don't have any Windows 7 CD key available.
I have searched for this before and anything I read assumes I have a CD drive, or a CD key for windows 7 professional or that I had windows 8 pro and used downgrade rights. None of those scenarios apply to me.
Can anyone out there help with this? Thanks in advance!

  • I don't have the option of installing a clean copy of Snow Leopard

I'm new to Mac and have been exploring different programs that would fulfill the same functions as the programs I had been using on Vista. Unfortunately, my computer got a little wonky somewhere along the way and I want to remedy it by erasing the hard drive and installing a clean copy of Snow Leopard. I've looked in my owner's manual as well as several websites online. They all tell me to select something either from a tab or an Options menu but there isn't one. When I reach the Select Destination window, I have the option to customize what is installed (i.e. Quicktime, Rosetta, etc.), go back and continue. Is it not possible or something???

it's possible but there is likely no need to do this. what exactly is wrong with your computer? a simple reinstall of snow leopard on top of your current system will cure many ills and will preserve your data and applications. and many problems can be solved without reinstalling at all.
but if you insist on doing a wipe and install boot from the SL install DVD and start disk utility from utilities menu at the top. erase your hard drive using the erase tab in disk utility. then quit disk utility and proceed with the install. and if you do reinstall I suggest you back up your data first. otherwise it will be completely wiped when you erase your hard drive. and you should always back up anyway.

Yeah.  I remember when I had that board.  I found the best SATA ports were the Promise ones, but...
What do you think, Tiresmoke?  You had the same board too if I'm not mistaken.

  • I have installed a OSX 10.7.5 and I want to install a clean copy of OS X mountain Lion on my mac.

I want to install a clean copy of Mountain Lion not an update from my current version which is 10.7.5.
I do not want to keep my old program files. I already have my personal info backed up.
    Thanks

If you don’t have it yet, get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store but do not install it yet (orredownload it if you did install it)
Create a bootable install drive for OS X Mountain Lion, make one manually with a USB drive oruse the LionDiskMaker tool to automate the process with a USB or DVD
With the boot installer drive connected to the Mac, reboot and hold down the Option key
Choose the “Mac OS X Installer” startup volume from the boot menu
Select “Disk Utility” and choose the hard drive you wish to format, click the “Erase” tab, and then pull down the “Format” menu and select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” as the type, name the drive if you wish
Click the “Erase” button and let the drive format – this is the point of no return
When finished, quit out of Disk Utility and now select the “Install Mac OS X” option from the menu
Choose your freshly formatted hard drive and install Mountain Lion
When the Mac reboots you will have a clean installation of Mac OS X 10.8 to work with.
I did this last week and its working fine

  • I am trying to install a clean copy of Lion, but I don't see the OS in my Disk Utility

    Good Morning Friends,
I am trying to install a clean copy of Lion, but I don't see the OS in my Disk Utility... I am lost.

    Hi Bohandleit208,
Just double-click on the Lion installer to install it. You should not need Disk Utility for that purpose. The Lion installer should be in your Applications folder.

  • Installing clean copy of Windows 7 without out-of-box state software?

I have the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6025 model and was wanting to do a clean install of Windows 7 on it. Without using the system recovery option and having it formated too out-of-box state. I was just wondering if it would effect the computer in any way? Because I know their are lots of system programs that come a long with it for key features. What do you think?

Perhaps I can add some usefull information here.  Most, if not all, computer manufacturers no longer provide recovery disks.  Some provide these at a small cost.  They do provide intruction how to make these disks.  There is a great amount of free information available on the internet how to do this.  The hard drive on new machines usually has 2 partitions, 1 is the recovery partition (dive), the other is the system partition (generally drive "C").  These partitions also contain the product bloatwhere specific to there products.  Most users find these utilities very useful.  If you format the drive and install a fresh operating system (lets say Windows 7) you generally will only have 1 partition (drive "C") without the product utilities.  The machine will work just fine.  Keep in mind, you will have to download and install new drivers and operating system updates and perhaps will need to make some system changes, such as screen resolution. I DO NOT SUGGEST THIS FOR MOST USERS.  Most users are starting to understand the need to backup their DATA, very few backup the system.  Anyone that buys a new machine should first make the system recovery disks, then do all the system and driver updates and back up once again. I suggest purchasing a USB hard drive and a product such as CMS Bounceback.  Backup the entire system, perhaps weekly or monthly depending on your useage.  In the event of a hard drive failure, you can swop the drive and be back in business in less than 1 hour.  You can also backup from the spare hard drive.

  • After trying every suggestion and uninstalling & installing with clean copy. I still get firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window

I have tried to restore to an earlier period. uninstalled then reinstalled mozilla, and restarted numerous times, but whenever I try to open the message Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you much first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.
Can use some advanced insight on this.

Try to use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • Anyone having problems installing a fresh copy of Windows 7?

Yeah, so I've been doodling in my spare time with my MSDN access and decided to build that dev environment I've been trying to build for quite some time. Be prepared for quite a read!
I pull out a bunch of used gear. Set it all up and start the process of installing the management PC.Install bucks twice and canned the hard drive. Then the DVD drive burns up. I go the thumbdrive route and use the MS Tool to dump the ISO onto it and make it bootable.Install zooms at a breakneck pace now and everything is going as it should. Windows 7 Enterprise comes up to the desktop and immediately screams it wants a windows update.I open WU and it's got the usual "You gotta update the updater meng!". I oblige and initiate the update as service pack 1 is already established. It churns for 5 minutes, comes back and says it has updates available. I see...

  • I am having problems installing an oem copy of windows 8 pro on my 2012 mbp.

I used boot camp to create a windows partition. Once i started the windows install process and format the drive, the installer says that windows cannot use the partition because it is not a gpt partition. I have followed and reviewed the boot camp manual, but there is no troubleshooting guide to resolve the issue. Any assistance would be apreciated.
    Regards.

Found it in the threads, use the windows option when booting, not the efi. I tried this when trying to install the frist time, but the windows installer did notmload properly. Should have known to try it again, but at least windows 8 is installed and working now.

  • Thinkpad S440 systematic crashes after upgrade to Win 8.1

    Hi,
After installing Windows 8.1 I've had big problems with my brand new Thinkpad S440. The laptop has generated systematic bluescreens, mostly related to the Intel Wireless-N 7260 WiFi module. Disabling it in the Device Manager helped a little bit, but I also get other Bluescreens related to e.g.. to "usbxhci.sys" and other modules. After the BSoD the laptop always goes into a reboot-loop at the Lenovo logo during the boot-up with the only solution do do a hard shut down (keeping the power-button pressed for 5 sec).
Yesterday I tried doing a fresh install, but it did not help at all. A few minutes after installing Win 8.1 from scratch the laptop generated a bluescreen.
I have updated all drivers to the latest version, and also tried to solve it by installing an earlier version of e.g. the WiFi driver. Neither one has helped.
Below is a list of the minidumps generated during BSoD's I've had during the last 12 hours since installing a fresh copy of Windows 8.1.
Please, what can I do about this situation? I would not like to return the machine since I like the hardware, but in the current state my Thinkpad S440 is useless. I have not found a way going back to Windows 8.0, since the recovery partition on the HDD apparently was destroyed (according to an Microsoft engineer) during my first trial to update to Win 8.1. (the first update ended in a Black Screen of Death). Microsoft was only willing supply me with a Win 8.1 product key (since a clean install was the only way to recover from the Black Screen of Death back then), which, of course, doesn't work for installing Win 8.0.

  • Is it possible to install a non HP Branded Windows 7 OS on a HPE h8-1360t.

    Hi.
I would like a clean install of Windows 7 Professional.
I have a new OEM copy of it just waiting to be installed without any unnecessary HP branded software.
    Will it work?
    TIA

Yes it is possible to install a retail copy of windows 7, however there will be issues with drivers.  The hp software build that came preinstalled on your product already has all the drivers for windows 7 for graphics, sound, LAN etc. that are compatible with Windows 7.  You will most likely need to install the original drivers from the hp website if the native windows 7 drivers do not work.  Before doing this make sure you have recovery disks for your product in case you need to revert back to the original configuration.
