Thinkpad S531 - No Beep / Black LCD

Hi Community,
I have a 2013 Lenovo Thinkpad S531.
Everything was fine the first 2 weeks.
But then suddenly after beeing switched off for longer time or in hibernation mode the laptop did not start up
properly anymore.
Symptoms:
   - screen is black/off/blank
   - no POST BIOS beep
The only thing that helps is unmounting the RAM and reseat it.
I am running linux with a 3.11 kernel on it. I deactivated secure boot and uefi is switched to legacy. Further I deactivated Intel Rapid Start Technology since I use the internal SSD as swap.
I think it could be either a bios problem or a motherboard defect.
Has anyone else experienced something like this?
Regards
voltage531

Hello Voltage,
I have exactly the same issue : Lenovo S531 bought in september 2013 and it fails to boot (the fan and the leds wake up on power, but the screen keeps black and doesn't load the BIOS). I didn't change anything in the BIOS parameters as you did.
Did you solve your issue ?
Regards,
Fred Martin

  • Thinkpad S531 keyboard problem

    Hello everyone.
I have bought my Thinkpad S531 almost a year ago (still under the warranty) but the problem I am having persists from the moment I bought it, I just didn't have the time to deal with it. I am using my laptop in dual boot and the problem manifests in slightly different ways on different systems:
    Windows 8.1:
Sometimes when I type nothing happens until I slighty hit my laptop from the bottom or from the top face or if I shake the whole laptop slighty. After I do that the characters suddenly appear on the screen - several characters I typed in first, I don't think it would display the whole sentence if I typed it.
    Ubuntu 14:
Sometimes when I type when I press a key it seems like it got stuck. For example, if I am writing something it continuously repeats one letter until I do some of the things I mentioned before for the Windows (hit/shake...). When I do that it stops and then also some of the characters I typed in later appears.
Those problems appear (on all of the keys of the keyboard) very often and I noticed it mostly happens when there is some kind of a pressure on the surface below the keyboard, for example if I am holding my hand there. It also happens if there is some kind of pressure under the laptop. It is very annoying and makes my laptop impossible to use sometimes. I also noticed my touchpad is not working most of the time, maybe those problems are connected.
Does anyone have the idea of what might be causing the problem? As I said, I am facing this issues from the day one.

Quoted from page 47 of the L530 Hardware Maintenance Manual:
Fn+Spacebar is not supported on your computer.
Note: Though your keyboard comes with a ThinkLight icon on the spacebar, the ThinkLight
function is not supported on ThinkPad L430 and L530 models.
My L530 also has that icon on the space bar, but no backlight either. So I believe the manual is right

  • ThinkPad T42p - Monitor goes black.

I am having a problem with my T42p laptop.  While doing anything from Windows XP Pro desktop the screen will goto black.  Hit FN - F7 keys and the screen comes back.  It may do this serveral times in a row or it may do it once every hour.  I downloaded the latest video drivers and edited the color display for the monitor.  Any suggestions???

    Welcome to the forum!
Has your LCD been reddish/pinkish on initial boot lately?
If you hook up an external monitor, does the picture disappear from it as well, or just from the LCD?
Good luck and let us know.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad T60P 2007-8EU - Removing LCD Front Bezel

    Greetings,
I have just spent about four hours dis-assembling my Lenovo ThinkPad T60P 2007-8EU with the purpose of disabling the Blue Tooth device. One of the last steps before you do that is to remove the LCD Front Bezel. I have read the documentation and believe I have removed all the screws but I still can´t remove the Bezel.
    Document:
    Hardware refference guide

    Pages 117 - 118
I have the 14.1 inch monitor . So the information should be on page 117.
Can any one give me some advice here?
    Thank you.

    People,
    I figured this one out.
There were two additional screws that had to be extracted. The documentation clearly showed this, but I did not see them because they, as several others, were neatly covered with plastic patches glued the screw position. It hides the screw and looks nice but it is difficult to figure out and harder to put back into place looking just as good after access.
While I was waiting for an answer, I figured it out. Thanks to anyone that read my message. No advice necessary. Problem solved. Thank you.

  • Thinkpad T530 Constant Beeping From CD Drive

My Thinkpad T530 has been constantly beeping for a few days now.
My laptop is about a month old and didn't start beeping until recently.
It isn't beeping from the speakers, but from some internal source.
I can hear it best when I put my ear up to the CD drive.
I am not sure if it is coming from the CD drive itself but it is from that general area.
It's a quiet beep and it beeps about once a second.
Please help I really don't feel like sending my laptop in for such a minor issue.

so it is beeping without you even touching the keyboard?

  • T530 does not make typical ThinkPad Power Status Beeps

    Hello,
I just got my ThinkPad T530.  Things are going ok with it, the keyboard isn't as terrible as I had thought - but certainly didn't wow me like the keyboard on my T510 which I think was the best keyboard any ThinkPad ever had.
Anyway, something I have noticed, and that is sort of a problem for me, is that this computer is not making the typical "power status change" beeps that every other ThinkPad has ever made.  You know, the dee-dum, dum-dee that go along with plugging or unplugging the AC power adapter.  Also no single beep when it finishes going to sleep, or wakes up from sleep.
Anyone know how I get these back?  I didn't see anything obvious in the BIOS or Power Manager.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hey brillat,
Could you tell us what version of Power Manager you have on your computer?
    DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED
      1. Start Power Manager. The main screen will be displayed.   2. Click '?' mark at the top right of the main screen, and select the 'About      Power Manager...' . The version will be displayed.
    thanks!
    Best Regards,

  • Thinkpad S531 Ultrabook

    Couple of thisngs
Firstly the backlit keyboard on this laptop has never worked? is this a common problem -is there anyhting simple I can check?
Secondly - this laptop came with a 24Gb M.2 SSD on the board, can I replace this with a larger M.2 Drive and install Windows/Boot from it? If so I see there are a varaty of different M.2 sizes 'I mean physical length of the drive not capacity' what would I need? What's the largest supported drive?
    Thanks

  • 13" Macbook Pro Beeps Black Screen on Startup

    Hi all,
My 2 month old 13" Macbook pro won't startup and I get a series of beeps and optical disc noise at start-up.
My only modification to the machine is the addition of an intel X25 SSD drive that I have had installed since day 2 and two 2GB sticks of ram with no problems whatsoever.
Yesterday, I ran the battery down all the way until the machine turned itself off (I guess it went to sleep or some hibernation mode).
I plugged the MPB in and charged it over night. Woke up this morning and the charge light showed green.
I tried turning it on and all I got were some beeps (longish) and the optical drive sounds like it is making some noise, but there is no disk in the drive. The beeps/optical drive noise seem to just cycle on and off and the machine never boots up.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. I'm on vacation at the moment and don't have the proper tools to remove the aluminum cover to get at the RAM.
Upon startup I hear a beep folowed by the optical (DVD) drive making some noise as if it wants to read a DVD but there is nothing in the drive. Then I get another beep followed by the optical drive noise. This happens cyclically like this indefinitely. I am using the laptop to charge my iphone. While it's beeping/cd drive is making noise I can still charge my iphone, so I think the battery is ok.
    Thanks again for you help!

  • MBP won't boot, one beep, black screen

    Specs: 13" MBP (early-2011) i5
After a power off of the computer, on restart I encounter this:
One beep every 5 seconds. Nothing showing on the screen. The fan spins (I took off the back cover to remove the HD so I can get off the files); however, the computer doesn't seem to boot at all.  The battery does work as the power connector glows when plugged in and the battery indicator on the side of the computer shows it's level.
I thought it may have been bad RAM, so I replaced the RAM. Tested each stick in each bay. Nothing changed.
I've scoured the boards for any solutions; however, I can't reset the PRAM or anything else as all that happens is the same back screen, one beep every 5 seconds and the fan spins.

    Early 2011 ?

  • BLACK SCREEN on start up with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-power

Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any
cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears,
and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After
about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling,
    so I'm putting 2 together.

I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the
driver wasnt for the system, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on.

this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?

I'd beg to differ on both accounts.
*61 series nVidia-based ThinkPads from late January through July of 2008 are a 50/50 shot, since the old chips were mixed with the new ones. Any machine built in August and later can be deemed "safe".
As for the forums (I don't do feebay) there are people who sell genuine, properly-tested planars. However, these do not come at bargain basement prices, and with a good reason if I may add.

I know for sure you will have more questions when you get the Z77 but one thing is when you do get it is don't assemble it in the case right away. Do initial assembly outside the case with MB on a sheet of plain brown cardboard or on a cardboard box. That will save you time and extra work until you get it running properly.
One hint now is for initial start up use only 1 stick of RAM in the black slot nearest the CPU, do not put all of the sticks in right away. Also take note that the green LAN LED will probably not light up on the first start up, that's normal and will be OK after it is started a 2nd time. That will happen every time you remove power from the MB such as unplugging PSU or turning off the PSU switch. We'll be here waiting for you to answer any more questions you may have.
    Thanks for the information!
It will arrive tomorrow, I will tell you how is it going.

  • T61 blank lcd...video card or bios mem?

New to the community, and have looked around a bit but haven't quite found a post with my exact problem. I believe the issue is either my nvidia graphics card or my RAM. Or something else completely.
Recently was playing an rpg (not a big one like WoW; a small BFG download), when the screen suddenly began flashing and appeared to have horizontal lines and box capsules. Powered down, but flashing would always begin again after the Windows screen. A few times I was alerted that I had a problem with the nv4_disp but before I could read the entire screen with this message it would shut down by itself. Powered on in Safe Mode with Networking, and did some research. Went to nvidia site. Many people had this same problem, supposedly related to overtasking the BIOS memory timing. A lenovo-sanctioned beta fix was offered (I am always very very suspicious, but this was legit though beta), so I downloaded and installed.
When it restarted, I no longer saw the Windows splash screen or anything. Blank black lcd though it is clearly on, and the fans are working and the indicator lights for battery/plugin are working. Went to my netbook to troubleshoot this new problem; I determined if it was the monitor itself (it wasn't), and tried a complete power down and restart. There is no beep code on startup, but there is a single beep upon powering down. If I am right that the T61 7662 has an AMIBios(?), then this single beep means there is a memory refresh timer error (the beep did sound a bit different from the shut down standard beep, but who knows). I may have to buy new RAM. I also tried clearing the CMOS manually by reseating the CMOS battery. Did not work, though I was hopeful.
My warranty is expired, but I've heard in all kinds of forums that these problems are acknowledged by nvidia or lenovo and might be covered. Not sure. I have XP and 2G RAM currently. Don't really know where to go from here, and I am a student so I don't want to pay lenovo to talk to me if it will waste time (I once did troubleshooting with them over the phone for 4 hours, in which I was told to talk to COMCAST and then Netgear, when I knew it was a lenovo problem, and finally got sent back to lenovo who then was like, 'oh yeah, just check this box here. sorry.' I was under warranty then, but I know we've all been there...the endless troubleshooting!)
Please help! Thank you for your expertise.
EDIT: Possibly related to this issue:garbled display/lenovo accountability failure/replacing motherboards due to gpu
and I have experienced overheating issues (the fan was replaced last year), faulty dvd-rom (had to be replaced when I first got my unit), and others. I don't think I will ever buy lenovo again, given my experiences and that replacing the motherboard seems to not work.

from what you are describing it sounds like an issue with the nvidia gpu.

  • Mystery: Thinkpad's bluetooth range suddenly reduced

Tl;dr: My Thinkpad's Bluetooth broadcast range suddenly dropped to a mere few feet. Afaik it's not about the headset, not about the drivers and not about the antennas.
Hello, I was hoping somebody could help me with a problem that has left me completely puzzled.
I have a Thinkpad S531 which has been upgraded with Intel centrino N 2230 wireless card - the rig has worked flawlessly for more than a year. I often use a wireless Bluetooth headset to listen to music, not wanting to annoy my neighbours.
Recently however the range of Bluetooth dropped dramatically. I can still connect and pair devices no problem -  and the headset functions if I sit in front of the notebook -  but should I step a few feet away from the audio starts breaking and dropping. (Previously the Bluetooth had range in my entire apartment.)
    So far I have tried..
    - resetting and recharging the headset, they work perfectly with my phone and SO's thinkpad
    -uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
    -reinstalling Win7 (was overdue anyway)
-popping open the maintenance cover to see if any antenna wire has come loose (unlikely as Wi-Fi performance remains unchanged)
All in all I have no more ideas. What could cause the range to be reduced so suddenly and decisively, without affecting other wireless performance?
    Thanks in advance!

More serious than first appeared. There appears to be no help available here for issues like this because the Intel mac and Leopard is such a massive disaster the help supply side is tied up. Jobs built the Mac; Jobs wrecked the Mac; mixed cursed be the name of Jobs.
