ThinkPad S540 AMD GPU PROBLEM!!!!

Good day! I recently (2 days ago) purchased a brand new S540 laptop. It worked fine, until I discovered a problem with AMD GPU.
So I have 2 GPUs: Intel HD 4400 and AMD Radeon 8670M. I have the Windows 8 OS. The problem is: any time the laptop is switching to AMD GPU the screen goes black for a fraction of a second, and then I have a notification "driver failure" in windows tray. I installed ALL possible drivers, nothing helped. The AMD GPU doesn't seem to work at all. Moreover, I updated to Windows 8.1 through Windows market, and this caused huge new troubles: when I try to install the GPU driver I have a bsod with a message "thread_stuck_in_driver", something like that, and OS restarts; after restart I can't even see the login window, seems like windows is trying to initialize AMD GPU and I have same blue screen and another restart, only disabling the 8670M video adapter in safe mode helps, but again, exactly until I try to install/enable it again.
I did a factory reset, restored Windows 8 back. Disabled OS update to ensure that I have a laptop "exactly as designed", and again, same problem.
I assume this is a hardware problem, am I right? The laptop was in a brand new box with factory stickers.
Thanks!

Ok, no response
Is this thing official, can I hear a feedback from Lenovo support guys?
I sent the laptop back for diagnostics.
I'm afraid that seller will tell me to repair the laptop; for free of course, but I'm not happy to pay full price for repaired device. In such case I can ask to reduce the price, but can't find how much the AMD 8670M costs. Maybe someone here can help? In % for ThinkPad S540 - how much would that be? 10%? 20%?
Thaks!!

  • Windows 10 - AMD GPU Problem

I recently upgraded to Microsoft's new OS, Windows 10 (Was Windows 7 Pro). Before the upgrade, Microsoft's system check stated that all my software and hardware was compatible, so I decided to upgrade. The problem is that all my hardware wasn't completely compatible. My computer kept on crashing after a few minutes after start up, I did some research and the problem was my AMD Radeon HD 8750M GPU. I had to disable the GPU in order to even use my computer. Windows 10 & my computer works fine now, but I am wondering if there is an updated driver for the AMD Radeon HD 8750M. I tried checking for driver updates through Window's Device Manager but received this message:  I also went on HP's site to check for the drivers:
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5405424&ac.admitted=1405091577086.876444892.492883150&swEnvOID=4059&action=listDriver&swLang=8
There is currently no option for Windows 10 however. Will my AMD GPU have an updated driver released soon? or is my GPU unsupported now? If the driver is out there, I would like the link to it please, thank you. I would also like to note that my NoteBook has switchable graphics and I am currently using my Intel GPU. If I attempt to install a driver and use my AMD card, then Windows 10 will crash and give me an "Internal Battery Error" and reboot my PC.

So I reupdated to Windows 10 and I checked this: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5405424&ac.admitted=1405091577086.876444892.492883150&swEnvOID=4059&action=listDriver&swLang=8 and I saw that the AMD driver has a new update for Windows 10. HOWEVER! I am still receiving that "INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR" that I see a lot of AMD users on the ProBook 450 G1 have also received. This is quite frustrating. :L

  • Resolution doesn't reach 1080p - G510 with AMD GPU

    Hey there,
I was just thinking that my G510 should be able to reach 1080p judging by the description on Amazon (which directly states that). It has a 2GB AMD GPU, yet my resolution is capped at 1366x768 at all times. Is it possible that my i7 is capping it? How do I fix this?

    Hi,
Your screen size is 1366 x 768.  You can't add more pixels to that.  This is taken from your product description:
"The powerful AMD Radeon HD8750M with 2GB of graphics memory dezidiertem you enjoy your videos and movies in the highest 1080p quality. Connect the G510 via built-in HDMI connector with a large screen TV, projector or external monitor and enjoy your favorite movies and videos to share with friends."
    Notice the second sentence.
    Here's the specs:  http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/g-series/g510/
The first entry says 1366 x 768.  You can get the resolution you desire by connecting your machine to an external monitor or TV that supports the higher resolution, but you can't add pixels to your laptop screen.

    Dave

  • Thinkpad S540 possible BIOS bug concerning WOL

I have had a Thinkpad S540 for a few months, and have it installed as dual boot Windows 8.1 and arch linux.  After completely shutting the machine down from linux I found that the battery would be down to around 70% charge after three days unused, and decided to investigate this problem since it was not reasonable for a new battery to lose charge at anything like this rate.
By chance I came across a piece of information concerning the issue of disabling WOL (Wake on LAN) on the network interface, since I had seen one report that by default WOL is enabled and this requires power to be going to the network interface even when shut down in order to be able to respond to magic packets to start the machine up when it is shut down.
First I checked the BIOS WOL setting and found it was set to "AC only" by default. So I changed it to disabled. This machine has the latest available BIOS version 1.54.
However on investigating this after rebooting in linux I found that
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    enabled
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: g
So WOL was still enabled despite it being set to disabled in the BIOS!
I learned that I can make sure that in arch linux the WOL setting can be changed to set to disabled after bootup by using a udev rule:
    # cat 70-disable_wol.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="enp3s0", RUN+="/usr/bin/ethtool -s enp3s0 wol d"
Then rebooting the machine I checked the WOL setting and it really is disabled now:
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: d
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    disabled
So I then ensured that the battery was 100% charged and shut down the machine and left it two and a half days - rebooting this morning the battery was still at 100% charge and no longer discharges unnecessarily when the machine is switched off,  so this is a clear indication of a bug in the BIOS for the WOL setting - it is still enabled despite the BIOS saying it is disabled!
How do I report this to Lenovo so that they can fix the BIOS and release a new one that is working?
I am aware of other users with different Thinkpads who seem to have the same problem, so this may be more widespread an issue than just on the S540.
It is also not just an issue with the battery running down when fully shut down but will likely also be a problem for a machine in suspend mode since the network interface may be consuming a watt or so of power when in suspend, which will again run the battery down at an unacceptable rate.
I cannot imagine any use case where it would be necessary to have WOL enabled on a laptop that is mostly going to be used mobile - so having the default setting to AC only enabled, and having a BIOS bug enabling it when it is explicitely disabled is a serious problem.

Anyone running windows in the same laptop can check the same issue of battery drain due to WOl being enabled by default - in the Device Manager under the network card, opening the settings menu for the ethernet wired card the default for Wake-on-LAN on my computer was set to enabled. This can be changed to disabled, and you may need to also disable the setting for Wake on Magic Packet. Also in the Power Management tab it is possible to uncheck the settings for "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer"
In my laptop these were all set to enabled by default.

  • Thinkpad S540 : Cannot Disable Microphone for real (even if disabled in BIOS)

    Hi,
I have an uncommon problem. Usualy people have troubles to get their devices working, mine is working to well...
I got a wonderful Thinkpad S540, working very well from scratch under the last Ubuntu 14.10
I went to the BIOS to disable all the devices I don't need like WAN, Bluetooth, camera AND MICROPHONE !
But this last one doesn't want to leave from my configuration.
And it is VERY sensitive and powerfull, I've tested it a bit at work, at home and I manage to catch conversation very far away from my place with the microphone with simple software like arecord, example :
    arecord -D default -f cd toto.wav
    next, try :
    vlc toto.wav
you will be upset by the high quality of the record. I made some test, the entire metal LCD panel is used "as" microphone amplifier. I tried to cover the mutiple holes at the top of the LCD panel, it still works Great...
The problem is : I would like to switch it off...
I flashed the last BIOS Revision: 1.63
I disabled the microphone in the BIOS, I restart 5 times, with and without the AC adaptater, it doesn't change anything...
Does someone know how to switch microphone off for real ?
Is it a Bug in the BIOS ?
Can we have some support contact to get a new working BIOS release ?
    Regard's

    Sorry guys,
problem sorted, my BIOS supervizer password was different than power on password, always when I was promt to put in password, I was putting there the one for power on and it let me go in BUT when I wen in BIOS, I wasnt able to access settings.
after I put in right supervisor password everything is working how supose to.

  • A different GPU problem than any I've researched

About 6 weeks ago temperature gauge started giving me warnings that the GPU diode 0 was getting too hot. Usually it gets up to around 260 F. I haven't had any performance issues, but I have to assume this is no bueno. After doing extensive research regarding this issue, I found that most people have had issues caused by their discrete GPU, specifically the AMD Radeon 6750M. This was concerning because that's what my computer has. However I installed Gfxcardstatus and found that the GPU only shows as being excessively hot when using the Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU. The computer never feels hot, and the fans don't seem to help to control the issue, even after using macs fan control to customize the fan settings. I never do any heavy lifting with my computer, and the heat issue persists no matter what applications I have open or what I'm doing. Is this something to be concerned about? Can this kind of heat coming from the GPU damage other components? Is there any kind of fix I could do to help the issue? I know there's a million threads similar to this, but I felt my issue was different enough to warrant a new thread. It's a 15" Early 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.4. Just to reiterate, I have had no display or performance issues associated with this issue, just the excessive heat. Thanks in advance for any advice!
    With the AMD GPU
And then the Intel GPU. Both taken seconds apart immediately after switching GPUs

    a. Some programs don't seem to work well with opening in the right space (older versions of MS Office come to mind), and this should get better with program updates. As a work around, you can change to the proper space and then open the program while there. The applications from Apple seem to work properly for me. Mail, Address Book, and iCal all open on Space 1 automatically, every time I boot up. FireFox and Safari both open on Space 2 when they are launched. Word and Excel launch on Space 5, while WindowsXP inside Parallels always runs on Space 9 in full screen. For me, this is very organized.
    b. I used a couple of different programs to do this same type of multiple desktops approach to working with programs. The last program I used, under Tiger, was Virtue Desktops. It was a little more polished than this original version of Spaces, but we should see improvements by .2 or .3 (Maybe):)
I generally work with 10 to 15 programs running at once, and dual monitors, but even the dual monitors don't allow me to arrange program windows the way I want, or to work with full screen programs like Parallels(WinXP) in a less distracting way. I prefer to have up to 9 desktops (accessible using Cntl + 1 or the number of the Space to quickly change my entire desktop.
Some people are distracted or even confused with the whole Spaces concept while others have been using it with many Linux distros for years. If your brain doesn't wrap around it and enjoy the feature it can easily be turned off in the Spaces preferences, just make sure you delete the program assignments from the preferences first, before you disable the feature. I've read that there have been problems by some people where applications will continue to open in a Space, and the Space isn't available, so nevernever land for it...

  • GPU Problems with my GT60 2OC-024US

    Hi guys!
A couple of days ago, I opened up my GT60 to add a new SSD I bought and, since I was opening it up, I also repasted the GPU and CPU. It was the first time I was doing it on this computer, but its not the first time I do a repasting on a pc. So, everything went smoothly, changed the paste, put the heatsink back in place, and then, when I tried to boot the PC, it got stuck after posting, like waiting from a response from the GPU I guess...
Tried a couple of reboots and nothing worked, so then i proceeded to enter in safe mode to check if it was only a GPU problem and it was. With the integrated graphics i was able to uninstall NVIDIA drivers and then, voilá, I booted normally without problems, EXCEPT, of course, I cant use the dedicated gpu.
Already tried all kinds of drivers, tried opening it up again, repasting, reconnecting the GPU, and nothing works. As soon as the OS tries to use the dedicated GPU (after I install NVIDIA's drivers) the same problem appears. So it seems something has happened with it.
Any ideas or insight on this? I don't know how to proceed. I bought the notebook on the USA but I live in Argentina and i'm not sure if there's official RMA or something around here.
    Thanks a lot!

  • Thinkpad S540 restarts when i shut down

    Hi
I have had this laptop for 7 months now, but since about 4 weeks ago when i click on shutdown i realised that it looked like it was shutting down... and 30 seconds later would fire up again.  At first i thought it was me clicking the wrong button, but it has happened daily now.  Only way to shut it down is my removing the power cable and then shutting down.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thank you!

  • AE CS6 crashes at startup - indicating GPU problem

    Hi,
I am new to the Abobe suite. Using a MacPro running 10.7 Lion, Intel based processors. Using a Radeon ATI 6xxx video card (2 monitors connected via mini-display, HDMI not used at the moment). Installed AE properly (support desk Adobe verified this remotely). AE CS6 is crashing at startup, indicating a GPU problem. Support desk Adobe has advised to contact 'the Mac guys' in order to see if an update to the video card driver might resolve the issue. Mac support is confirming my system to be fully up to date. From other topics on this forum I noticed more people are suffering (or have suffered) the same problem. However I haven't seen any firm/clear resolution to this problem.
Can anyone tell me (in simple language) what I can do in order to get this configuration to work (ideally without having to replace my Graphics Card - as I believe it is a rather new model that I would expect to be supported)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcel

  • Has the Asus G71GX-RX05 GPU problem been fixed?

Has the Asus G71GX-RX05 GPU problem been fixed? And if so what do you have to do to fix it.

    hi vanhelsing.
i know that asus was working on an updated BIOS to fix the GPU issue, and according to the last post in this thread on the asus support forums (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20090627114124765&board_id=3&model=G71Gx(BestBuy)&SLanguage=e...), rev. 1201 seems to have done the trick.
i checked the asus support website (http://support.asus.com), and i found that there is an even new version of the BIOS - rev. 1302. i would recommend moving to this BIOS upon unboxing your G71GX.
i have updated the BIOS on both notebooks and desktops before, and the process is fairly painless. i found this link off the asus support site (http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments/technicaldocuments.aspx?root=198&SLanguage=en-us), and it describes how to update the BIOS. i would recommend having a conversation with your local geek squad if you're not comfortable doing the process yourself.

  • ThinkPad X131e (amd) RAM Upgrade Questions.

I have a ThinkPad x131e (amd 1.7 ghz) laptop. It currently has 4 GB (1x4 ddr3) of ram. I want to upgrade the ram on the machine without it bogging down. I have herd rumors that my system is able to support up to 16 GB of ram even though it only officially supports 8 GB. I am a college student and I do a lot of graphic design, and Photoshop cs6 runs slightly sluggish for my taste. I was wondering if these rumors were true. If so, what is the highest frequency of ram that I could get with a 2 x 8 GB setup. Any and all advice is accepted.
    Top 5 programs I use:
    Photoshop cs6
    Gimp
    Inkscape

    FL Studio 11

    Hi Blaze,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
We understood that your query is about to know the maximum RAM supported to ThinkPad x131e.
As per the Lenovo the system will support maximum up to 8 GB RAM.
Please click here to know the complete specification on that.
    Hope this helps!

  • Backlight AND GPU Problems? ARGHHHH

Even though my iBook G3 800 MHz has been having the flickering screen, lines, and freezes common of the GPU problem for about 6 months, it's been tolerable. I just told myself as soon as I couldn't deal with it, I'd send it in. Well, I wouldn't be posting this right now, if my backlight hadn't gone out. I opened it up, and it looks to me like it's the "pinched inverter cable" problem. So, I guess it's time to send it in. Problem is, I don't have the money to send it to Apple, but I really don't think I'm handy enough to fix it myself.
My question is, does anyone know a reputable website or company that would fix this sort of thing (I actully can live with the GPU problem, they don't need to fix that) cheaper then Apple?
    Thanks in advance

You may want to try DT & T Computer Services, but don't go halfway with it. Have them fix it completely or don't even bother sending it in. Why? Because one week after you get it back, that logic board could quit on you completely. Mine got so I could only use it 20 minutes a day.
If you ask, they may give you a discount on fixing the cable/logic board problem at the same time, since they only have to open it once. You could ask (I would.)
    Good luck.
