  • Factory fresh Thinkpad T440 won't boot into preinstalled Win8

    As the title already tells,
my company orderd new Thinkpads with preinstalled Win 8.
So I packed one out and pressed the power on/off button but the Thinkpad won't boot into Win8. Right now it hangs in the screen where I can choose from which option I'd like to boot (network, SSD etc.)
So I decided to take another one but it has the same problem.
I have no clue what I can do about this problem.
Has anyone a suggestion for me what I can do now ?

    Hi Mjschuster,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
Check if the HDD is detecting in the BIOS.
If yes, then perform “System Restore” to reinstall the Operating System.
If it is not showing in BIOS, try reseating the drive.

  • My ThinkPad T400 won't boot!

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!
I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!
    What do I do?!

have a look at your usb ports, there could be some sort of pins touching, as the result of damaged usb pins.

  • ThinkPad T400 won't boot

My ThinkPad T400 was in sleep mode - on battery power and not plugged in - over the long weekend. Yesterday, I noticed the power light was out, so I plugged the laptop in to recharge the battery. This morning, the laptop will not boot. I have light indicators for the device being plugged in and the battery charging, plus another indicator to the right of the hard drive light that looks like a Z (?). When I press the power button, it sounds like the laptop is preparing to boot, but nothing happens. I've never had any problems whatsoever with this laptop, so I'm at a loss what to try.

what is the model number of your T400?

is your T400 a switchable graphics model?

I have used my thinkpad T400 for like a year and recently I hibernated it and it could not boot. I tried the battery reset and it came right on but will not boot to windows (Blue screen after POST). I tried running a new OS instalation but anytime I boot from cd, I get a distorted screen (many colourful strips takes over the screen). I really need help............................from any one.

  • Thinkpad L520 won't boot without nox2apic kernel parameter

I can't boot using any of the stock arch kernels since 3.2.0 unless I disable x2apic.  There's a bug report at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43054, apparently it's affecting other thinkpads as well.
If anyone else is having problems, try adding nox2apic to your kernel command line or compiling a kernel without CONFIG_X86_X2APIC.  And be aware that installing arch using the net install iso will require using this parameter or ignoring the linux package when downloading/installing packages.
Booting without disabling x2apic was completely locking up @ the line:
"ACPI: EC: Look up EC in DSDT"

Interesting.  No issues here with a T410.

  • Thinkpad t410s Won't boot up

It's the same whether it's charging or not (it does respond to being charged, the battery light comes on) and if the battery is in or not. Pressing the power button causes it to give two short beeps, with the logo faintly visible. And then after a few more seconds, another beep, still short but with a different tone, and then the cheeky git turns itself off. Any help would be appreciated :/

Are there any error message after two beeps? Does the screen flash or has unreadable symbols on that after single beep?
In any case two beeps means the RAM sticks (or their connectors) or system board fault. Or it might be the screen parts related fault as you listen another one beep.

  • IBM R52 Thinkpad won't boot

After successfully imaging an IBM R52 laptop (with SATA drive) it won't
    boot into Win2k.
We are using ZFD v4.01 on NW 6.5, and this is from the bootCD.iso. At
first I was thinking this was a problem with the SATA drive, however, I
soon remembered that we are imaging and booting the IBM 8183 desktop which
also has a SATA drive, and it's working perfectly fine. The R52 thinkpad,
on the other hand, gives no errors and accepts the image just fine.....it
just won't boot. It gets past the BIOS, and then just sits at a
black/blank screen, like it's trying to find the boot partition but it
can't. If I manually reinstall just a blank Win2k OS on it and reboot,
everything is fine. However, as soon as I image it up, and then image it
back down, it messes up the boot partition again and won't boot.
ZEN Imaging is working perfectly fine on our other IBM devices we have in
    house: IBM R40, R41, R50, R51, A30, A30p, A31, A22, T20, 8183, 8171,
6792.....etc. It's just this one particular model we just got in. I've
checked the hard drive using fdisk, and everything looks fine. Just 1
    single, bootable partition.
    Any suggestions?

hmm... could you take a look with img d g at the size of the partitions
    before and after the imaging?

  • Network.service won't boot

    Hi there,
I just installed arch on my Thinkpad t42p which has a ipw2100 wireless chip. I configured the whole network manually and a corresponding systemd entry. Sometimes the network comes up at boot at sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't boot I still can start it manually with
    # systemctl start network
Why could it be that it sometimes boots and sometimes it doesn't?
    Last edited by dead_kenny (2012-11-10 08:35:03)

Thx for the link skunktrader. Now I fixed the matter by asining a udev rule to the network interfaces as described in the wiki.
Now I installed arch on an ASUS notebook where the interfaces don't shift during boot but there the network.service also won't boot. I have to start the service manually after boot. The output of
    systemctl /usr/lib/systemd/systemd
doesn't present the Network Connectivity until I start it manually. Could there be another reason for this? E.g. driver starts to late? How should I look for why systemd cannot start boot the network.service?

  • Thinkpad S540 possible BIOS bug concerning WOL

I have had a Thinkpad S540 for a few months, and have it installed as dual boot Windows 8.1 and arch linux.  After completely shutting the machine down from linux I found that the battery would be down to around 70% charge after three days unused, and decided to investigate this problem since it was not reasonable for a new battery to lose charge at anything like this rate.
By chance I came across a piece of information concerning the issue of disabling WOL (Wake on LAN) on the network interface, since I had seen one report that by default WOL is enabled and this requires power to be going to the network interface even when shut down in order to be able to respond to magic packets to start the machine up when it is shut down.
First I checked the BIOS WOL setting and found it was set to "AC only" by default. So I changed it to disabled. This machine has the latest available BIOS version 1.54.
However on investigating this after rebooting in linux I found that
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    enabled
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: g
So WOL was still enabled despite it being set to disabled in the BIOS!
I learned that I can make sure that in arch linux the WOL setting can be changed to set to disabled after bootup by using a udev rule:
    # cat 70-disable_wol.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="enp3s0", RUN+="/usr/bin/ethtool -s enp3s0 wol d"
Then rebooting the machine I checked the WOL setting and it really is disabled now:
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: d
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    disabled
So I then ensured that the battery was 100% charged and shut down the machine and left it two and a half days - rebooting this morning the battery was still at 100% charge and no longer discharges unnecessarily when the machine is switched off,  so this is a clear indication of a bug in the BIOS for the WOL setting - it is still enabled despite the BIOS saying it is disabled!
How do I report this to Lenovo so that they can fix the BIOS and release a new one that is working?
I am aware of other users with different Thinkpads who seem to have the same problem, so this may be more widespread an issue than just on the S540.
It is also not just an issue with the battery running down when fully shut down but will likely also be a problem for a machine in suspend mode since the network interface may be consuming a watt or so of power when in suspend, which will again run the battery down at an unacceptable rate.
I cannot imagine any use case where it would be necessary to have WOL enabled on a laptop that is mostly going to be used mobile - so having the default setting to AC only enabled, and having a BIOS bug enabling it when it is explicitely disabled is a serious problem.

Anyone running windows in the same laptop can check the same issue of battery drain due to WOl being enabled by default - in the Device Manager under the network card, opening the settings menu for the ethernet wired card the default for Wake-on-LAN on my computer was set to enabled. This can be changed to disabled, and you may need to also disable the setting for Wake on Magic Packet. Also in the Power Management tab it is possible to uncheck the settings for "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer"
In my laptop these were all set to enabled by default.

  • T420 won't boot with 2x4GB RAM (two identical RAM)

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a weird issue that I'm hoping you'll be able to help me with.
My T420 came with 1x4GB of ram (underneath the keyboard) and I wanted to upgrade to 2x4GB RAM so I bought exactly the same RAM again.
Both RAMs work fine by themselves, in the bay under the keyboard as well as in the bay underneath the laptop. Both RAM were tested individually in both RAM slots. The laptop works just fine with either of the RAM individually in either of the RAM slots.
BUT if I put them both in at the same time, the T420 won't boot. It switches on (screen stays black) and instantly switches back off. Without pushing any button, the T420 will then switch itself on again about 3-5 seconds later. This process is repeated indefinitely. I don't even get to see the ThinkPad security screen where you can access BIOS. I switched the RAM around in the slots but this didn't resolve the issue either.
I have never had anything like that before. Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Regards
    Lippasti

Has seriously no one ever had this issue? There must be a solution to this since I can rule out that either one of the RAM or the RAM slots is damages since each RAM works fine in each slot separately. I'm only experiencing this issue if I put them in simultaniously.
Is there possibly any BIOS settings which I need to adjust prior to installing the second RAM?
Not that I think it matters since I can't even boot it to the Windows screen but here are some specs. I am using a Kingston 512GB SSD and the other specs are:
Here's the RAM I am using.

  • UEFI-only Won't Boot Windows Installation DVD

As you can see from my topic subject, my W520 laptop won't boot from my Windows 7 Installation DVD when it is set to UEFI-only mode. I don't get any errors or anything, the screen just goes black for a second and returns to the Boot Menu, when I select the DVD drive. For what it's worth, my hard drive is already GPT partitioned, and I need to repair the installation.
Before I ask for help, I just want to mention that I created this particular Windows 7 Installation DVD using the All-in-One tutorial so that I could have 32-bit and 64-bit options all on the same disc. The disc booted fine in "Legacy/UEFI" boot mode, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Does anyone have insight into this?
EDIT: I've been following this tutorial: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=186440 and am at Step 14.

The UEFI/BIOS is the first thing I updated on the computer, so mine's 1.22. I wish it were that easy, though Could 1.22 have re-introduced the problem?
EDIT: Holy smokes! There's another version of the UEFI-BIOS already Unfortunately, my hard drive is stuck in limbo! It's now partitioned in GPT and needs to be repaired. I'll use the bootable BIOS cd and report back if the new version works

  • Windows 8.1 Pro won't boot without USB Stick

Please HELP! I bought a Thinkpad e555 without OS, created installation media for Windows 8.1 in a 64Gb USB stick. When the installation was finalized, I followed the instruction of removing the stick after restarting. After powered on, black screen for hours. Put the usb stick back and Windows booted, finalized the installations and configurations, and started normally. So I started with all of the drivers downloads and installation. So I removed the usb thinking that everthing was ok. But when a restarted it, it wouldn't boot until I restarted it with the usb plugged. Complained with the retailer and sent me a new one. Now I'm trying the installation all over again using a 16Gb USB stick. The same, the OS won't boot without having plugged the USB that I used for installation. What am I doing wrong? Note:NTB LENOVO TP E555 20DH000WGEAMD A8-7100, 4GBx1, 15.6" HD, Black, AMD R5 HD Grafik, 720p CAM, 500GB7200, DVD±RW, RTL bgn+BT, Numpad, No Fingerprint, Akku 6Zellen (48wh), None Preload OS

I have this problem on E455. Both in 8.1 Pro.It was after a driver update, but not sure which one.It doesn't what USB device is attached, just so long as there is one.

  • Helix died on me, won't boot after BIOS update

I just did a BIOS update the other day. No idea what version it is. When I booted it said it "detection error on HDD...". I have since reset the BIOS options to default, and now it boots to a DOS-like boot screen that shows the ATA HDD0 drive. But selecting it and hitting enter just flashes the screen and nothing happens.
When I attach a USB thumb drive with Linux, it shows up in the options on the DOS-like boot screen, but selecting it won't boot from it.
The laptop is now totally uselss and I'm losing days of time and it's a major problem. What to do?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hello. Assuming that you have not clean installed a new operating system, and you've got the
original Win8 installation on your Helix.
Enter your BIOS setup by pressing F1 when the Lenovo logo appears.
Go to Security - Secure Boot and set it to Disabled if you want to boot any other OS than Win8.
If you're happy with just running Windows 8 on it, then I recommend Secure Boot to be set to ON.
Go to Startup - Boot - and on top should be Windows Boot Manager.
With Secure Boot set to on, UEFI/Legacy Boot is greyed out and set to UEFI Only.
With Secure Boot set to off, and you want to boot other OS, like Linux, it should be set to both.
Check these settings and see if your machine boots.
