Thinkpad T20 docking issues

My Thinkpad T20 will not power on after being undocked until it is docked again.  Battery indicator is 100% and Maximum Lifespan mode indicated.  Anyone else with this issue??  Any solutions?/

For anyone having a similar problem -
It turned out to be in fact a hardware problem. I decided to give it a go instead of waiting a few weeks for Lenovo to fix it. It is surprisingly serviceable, basically disable the battery in the BIOS, remove 10 screws at the bottom, take off the cover (easy with a credit card), remove 1 screw for the battery, take out and un-plug the battery (wrap a small piece of tape around the battery cables to create a pull tab and not damage the cables/connector).
Then the NFC module is at the lower right of the trackpad area, with one connection to the mainboard and one to the antenna in the trackpad. It appears that the cable that goes to the mainboard was pluged in slighty offset - it had bite marks from the connector, but between the copper tracks not on them. I plugged it in again, making sure that it seats properly, put everything back together and now I have working NFC
I'm just a bit baffled that this could pass QC.

    Hello,
I have been trying to find the tech specs for my docking stations but have had no luck.
Some of my employees have said that the network connection is slow for them and the only thing they have in common is all 3 of them use the same Lenovo docking station.
Below are all the numbers/details i could find for the specific dock that we use:
    Type: 4338

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

I am really sorry you are experiencing such issues. What makes me really mad is the fact, according to your words, that Lenovo support is directing you to this forum for help? This forum works on volunteer basis, so you might have a luck or not. I mean, you are living in the USA which is the most important market for Lenovo so if I would you, I would escallate the support issue.
Meanwhile, there are two options you might try out:
You could check if the firmware utility driver update helps, http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd028011
or you might try out your luck with the native nVidia drivers, see http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/Quadro_Certified/334.95/334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit... . • ThinkPad Ultra Dock - 90W US 40A20090US Dual Video Vga port dropping

We have a new lenovo 440 with this docking station.   There are two monitors hooked to both the DVD and VGA output.
Everything works most of the time but every now and then the VGA monitor goes black and wont come back until you undock and redock the laptop.   The DVD monitor continues to work  its just the monitor attached to the VGA output.
Any thoughts as to what the issue could be?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi all,
thanks for posting. I believe you issue could be related to the solution I have below. Could you try the solution below.
NB: Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
The firmware for the DisplayPort hub in the dock needs to be updated :
If the display on an external monitor connected to a ThinkPad Pro Dock or a ThinkPad Ultra dock is flickering or going blank, download the firmware (fwdphb01.exe) from the following URL:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=HT081248
    Downloading:
A window will pop up asking you to Run or Save the file. Select Save.
Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and select Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
Make sure to be logged on with an Administrator account.
Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
    Installing file:
    Close all applications.
Double click the downloaded file: fwdphb01.exe
It will display the current firmware version and the firmware version to be installed.
If the current firmware version on your dock is older than 2.17.000, then click the Update firmware button.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the dock with following action:
Shutdown the system, unplug the AC adapter from the dock, and wait for 5 seconds. Then, re-attach the AC adapter and power on.
    6. If your docking station already updated, then click the Cancel Update button to exit.
Hope this helps and please do post back.

  • How to install Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop

    Hello,
I would like to install Solaris 8 on my IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop and I am facing two kinds of problems:
    -1- I cannot boot on the Matshushita DVDROM which is shipped with : i have got a boot panic ;
-2- My SAVAGE/IX 8MB Video Card is not recognised.
    ANY HELP APPRECIATED
    [email protected]

    Hi There,
Although laptops are not officially supported, I am aware that another
customer managed to install their system over a network connection
    due to local CDROM issues.
This may be something to try if you have access to another SOlaris System with a local CDROM.
As for the Video Card, I have not found any records of anyone
else attempting to use this particular chipset and so you may be
limited to just standard VGA in this case.

  • W520 Docking issue - attached monitor won't enter power saving mod

When my W520 (Win2008R2) power management profile shuts the display off (after 10 mins, for example), the externally DVI connected screen no longer receives a signal, but the screen doesn’t go into power saving mode.  Instead, the monitor stays powered on (the green power light normally turns yellow), and displays the message “Cannot display this mode”.  It’s a Dell monitor, and this message appears to be a Dell message, nothing from the Lenovo or Windows.
It’s a new W520, and a new docking station – the ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 170W.  The previous W510 and previous docking station ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 135W both worked fine with this monitor, and were able properly stop sending it a signal.
So…where do I start troubleshooting?  Is this a Lenovo docking station issue?  Are others having this problem?

    hey DougWelsby,
welcome to the forums and for this is hard to say if it is the docking station or is it something else.
is it possible for you to test a different monitor with the docking station or to have test the current monitor of yours directly with the W520 ?
If you can, do reply back with your findings.
At the same time, do hop over to http://support.lenovo.com and crosscheck the download list and ensure all drivers (including bios) is up to date.

  • Thinkpad T20 - Hardrive? Display? Who knows!

    Hello,
The model of the computer in question is a Thinkpad T20 type 2647 41u.
    The issue:
Awhile ago the computer starting bogging down severly ( there may have been more issues, it was awhile ago). The actions I took were to format the computer, and reinstall the OS. The format completed, however the OS failed to install.
Now I am revisiting the issue to try to revive this laptop.
    Steps/Notes of actions fo far:
    - notebook starts up, and will enter bios, is bios the hardrive, cd-rom etc are recognized with their proper names.
    - if you let it boot (without a windows disk in the cd-rom) from the hardrive the message, the Managed PC Boot Agent launches, displays some text, then the error: 'PXE-E61: Media failure, check cable' is displayed.
-if you boot from an install disk, the setup screen will display, however when you press enter to continue, the screen goes black (still backlit) and stays there.
-note: i tried removing the harddrive and putting it into another laptop, ran the windows 2000 install, and the setup will go PAST the freeze point. But, a few steps later, when you select the drive to partition, or place the OS on, the text 'Cannot select this drive' is displayed. Pressing enter anyway yields a blue error screen.
-note: i tried to run the DOS PC Doctor, but nothing launched ( not sure if this model is capable?)
That is essentially the summary of the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. I can not determine if its the harddrive, or display or something else.
Thank you to anyone with comments!

    Hi George,
    Thanks for the warm welcome!
Unfortunately I have no way to create a floppy disk. I have, however, started to search for a method to create a bootable CD which would be capable of launching the DOS PC Doctor. I'm sure this is possible. If you have any tips or links for doing so, please let me know!
In the mean time, I have tried a couple other things. I ran the Hitatchi Drive Fitness Test tool for the HDD, however it turned back a couple errors.
    1. When testing, the drive is scanned, and this comes up: Problem detected on a non Hitatchi disk drive, please contact your HDD supplier for additional support. Error code = 0x70 -> which translates to (via User Manual of test): 'A general hard disk drive problem was encountered. You can run the 'Erase Disk' utility. If a subsequent test fails again, the drive is defective and should be replaced.'
    2. So I run the Erase utility and get: You are trying to test a non HGST Hard Disk Drive. This program is only designed to work with HGST hard drives.
       - ( in regards to 1, the drive is definately hitachi, and the proper tool is being used - checked a few times)
I am currently running DBAN (www.dban.org) in an attempt to completely erase the drive. Could this be a potential soltuion (ie: remove any corrupt data created when the OS failed to install wayback?). Anyway, this program is taking a ridiculously long time, hovering around 50,000 b/s on a 12 gig drive.
Actually, the wipe kept failing due to a supposed 'no more memory' error. I dont know if this is the computer or a problem with the program.. so I am currently wiping the drive in another laptop.
About the PCI card, i will check that - would you reccommend abandoning the wipe to try this install?
    Thanks!

  • Maximum Multiple Monitors with ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W (4338-30U)

Bit of a multi display novice, with a question:
What is the maximum number of external displays that can be utilized with the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W. As I understand it, you can baseline connect three external displays without adapters, so with the laptop that is three monitors (1+3).
Then say you start getting creative and start using adapters, can you go up to five or six external displays? Are there performance issues? Does the computer have trouble recognizing displays, etc.? Would it benefit from a screen management program like UltraMon?
This is for simple excel jockeying, and business productivity, (for instance I would want to have a display for each instance of Excel 1, Excel 2, Excel 3, Word,  Outlook, PDF),  and would use the NVidia Optimus Card for the displays.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Depending on which ThinkPad you got, you can get 3 screens up and working (the W530 i tested could drive 4 external + 1 internal without using things like DP splitter or USB display adapter).

  • Problem using DVD/CD drive with Thinkpad Advanced Dock -- drive gets "lost" on start-up

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Advanced Docking station, a Thinkpad T60p, and an UltraBay Slim Super Multi-Burner Drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4083N) that I use in the docking station's expansion bay.  Whenever I restart the docking station and computer, the multi-burner drive becomes "lost" -- I have to physically remove the drive and re-insert it for the computer to recognize the drive.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Does anyone know how to get around it?

Yes, I have had the same problem. I have the HP Pavilion 14.1" but similar stuff. I don't know if you noticed searching but there are a LOT of people who have this problem. Apple won't help me because they say its not them. HP and Costco Tech Support can't figure it out and I don't have another 3+ hours to sit on the phone more to figure it out. Its an issue with Apple and Windows believe it or not, I am considering selling my ipod and not using itunes to purchase music and movies anymore. So are friends. The ONE way to fix it is you go into the regedit and delete the upper and lower drive filters for the drive. The problem with this is now when you go back into itunes it will no longer recognize your drive. So two options you are left with A) Itunes working without your cd drive working at all OR B) your cd drive working for everything BUT itunes and when you use itunes you get that message about not finding your cd drive. So no matter what you do, itunes and your drive will never work together. That is just how it is and NO SOLUTION has been found. Apple doesn't know or care. HP or Microsoft has no idea because its something Apple did. And despite people frantically trying to find solutions online, there really doesn't seem to be any to this point. If someone finds a viable working solution to this problem to get your drive and itunes to work TOGETHER even after restarting, I would be VERY HAPPY as well as 'computerguy'!

  • ThinkPad W520 Docking Station

Hey, everyone. My ThinkPad W520 should be arriving here tomorrow, and along with it, I ordered the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W. Currently, I have two monitors, one running at a resolution of 2048x1152, and the other one running at 1680x1050. I'm just now seeing that the limitation for the DVI ports is 1920x1080, so I'm guessing that won't work to hook these up.
My other route that I can go is by buying a DVI to DisplayPort cable, and then hooking them up that way. Lenovo's site claims that the dock has "Two DisplayPorts supporting 2560 x 1600 resolution," but would that mean I can hook up (these) two displays simultaneously? Inside the W520, is the NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory.
    Thanks in advanced!
    -Joe

well the real limitation of the single link dvi port is actually the 2048x1152 @ 60 hz, but this resolution monitor is seldomly used so they just use WUXGA or FHD as the stated maximum, 30 inch or 27 inch high resolution LCD uses dual link dvi (which is not supported by the dock dvi).
You can hock up two displayport monitors up and still run the internal LCD, since the new W520 uses the optimus graphics technology.

  • Thinkpad mini dock 4337 + thinkpad Х220

н.assembled p/n), 92p1157 (сервисный p/n, т.е.

  • M92Z like monitor display port in connect to DVI thinkpad ultra dock

I´m coneccting a thinkpad ultra dock DVI to M92Z display port in, but not work, the monitor is in black. I´m using a DVI cable and a DVI to Display port adapter (43N9160).

DVI (computer) to ADC (display) adapters are only for LCDs, not CRTs. Most do not pass trough the analog video signals needed for a CRT, and do not provide enough power. I have seen reports that the Gefen DVI to ADC adapter
<http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1203> does pass the video signals, but the power supply gets VERY hot when running a CRT. You could replace the supply with a bigger one. I think you need 28V 4A.
