Thinkpad T41 ethernet problem

Hello
I have a thinkpad T41 2373 1FU model with linux installed on it , it works perfectly , every system component is recognized by the kernel. But i have a problem with the ethernet connection , it used to work perfectly but now when i plug a cable into there is no link and no light , the device is properly recognize by the system as a gigabit controller and it load the correct module.
I have changed to the latest bios found on the website. Can it be caused by the new bios or new embeded controller?
Anyone as an idea or has ever encountered this problem?

Welcome to the forum!
Your 2100B card will always be slow, since it's only capable of 11Mbps speed. Time for upgrade, IMHO.
The Ethernet driver can be found here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62922
After downloading it, make sure to unapck it from the correct directory which should be C>Drivers>Win>Ethernet.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
George

  • IBM Thinkpad T41 - Display Problems

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and have had a quick search and could not find the answer to my problem.
I support a customer who has an IBM T/P T41 laptop, type 2373.  The customer is a 6 hour round trip away, so the details posted are what he has given me off the back of the laptop.
    The problem:
The display on the laptop (or external TFT) when either docked or undocked keep going blank, when being used or idle.
The user has to hold the power button to shut down the laptop and restart it.
The problem is very intermittent and has no real pattern.
    Any advice welcome.
I am more than happy to replace parts but would need a part number first, so I could try and order it.
    Thanks
    Pete

    Hello,
please try a linux live cd, like Knoppix or Ubuntu. Burn it to disc and boot with it.
When the problem reappears you unfortunately have to replace the mobo,
cause of connectivity problems with the bad soldered gpu.
The phanomenon is called flexing, the cause is moving your TP with open lid and with just one
hand holding it at only one edge.

  • IBM thinkpad T41 model 2373-72A drivers

I reformat my laptopn but I forgot that I lost my cd driver, now im looking everywhere but cant find its the driver for my ethernet, audio, wireless, vga and an unknown device. Can someone give me the correct drivers for my laptop? Please help me I need to finish this for my project.

    Hello,
Are you certain the ThinkPad is a T41?  I did a search on "2373-72A" on Lenovo's support web site, and came up with the following configuration:
    ThinkPad T40 (2373-72A) P M 1.5GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Intel 802.11b Wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro
In any case, here are the drivers for both model generations:
    ThinkPad T40, T40p
    ThinkPad T41, T41p
Don't forget to install all of the latest updates for Microsoft Windows after you have finished installing the drivers.

  • HELP!!! Mac G4 450mhz dual ethernet PROBLEMS!

Hello, my mac is having a serious problem with the internet. It won't connect, and even though i have a ethernet cable plugged in, it says i don't. Everything was working fine until i left for 2 days and and plugged it for that time. I need the internet in that mac as soon as possible.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

I too, am having the same problem... but mine isn't because of the possible software update, it just flat out doesn't work!
I too, have tried asking for help with the possibility of (hopefully) restoring the driver/extension... but after reformating the drive and reinstalling the software from 10.2, to 10.2.8 and it still failed to work, I ended up buying a Belkin Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card that has FAILED in every way!!!
The Belkin card will work as a one-time thing, and after restarting or disconnecting the Ethernet cable, it fails to function and fails to be "selectable" within the Ethernet configuration "Show:" options.
    ...so don't buy the Belkin...
I have yet to resolve my dead Ethernet problem, and it is... a problem!
I know this isn't contributing much of anything, but don't waist your time with the Belkin. I bought one, it acted in the way described above, and the Belkin Tech Support suggested I exchange it with another one, and so I did... and it too... is acting in the manner described above.
No resolve... no Ethernet... no on-line schtuff. not on that G4!!!

  • Macbook Pro ethernet problems

    Hi All:
First post here. I have a 15" first generation MBP, and I'm having some ethernet problems. When my ethernet works, it works fine. However, if i were to shut down the machine and disconnect the ethernet cable, I cannot reconnect to the ethernet. In Network Preferences, Ethernet is not available in the pulldown and it appears gray-ed out in the Network Port Configurations. Restarting the computer, unplugging or resetting the modem doesn't help. Also, the PC link light on the modem will not be lit (but is lit when working).
The computer will not connect to any ethernet network, no matter where I am.
I've noticed if I keep resetting both comuter an modem a couple dozen times over a few hours, the PC link button will light, and upon next startup the ethernet connection will be restored. What do you guys think the problem is? It seems abnormal to me.

Had a similar situation with mine back in January, 2.16 Intel.
After spending 3 nights with my Cable ISP as the connection would drop-off, ethernet light flicker green, amber etc.
Took it back to Apple dealer, connected to Dealers network same problem. Cause:::: Motherboard had to be replaced, possible soder loose on the MO. Got it back in 10 days, haven't had a problem ever since.
Suggest you take back yours to have Apple dealer try this out.

  • Thinkpad t41 dual monitor pivot

I have recently got a new monitor with pivot feature. I am not able to make it work so it is usable though...
I use arandr (xrandr frontend) for setting xorg, but as soon as I set the orientation of the secondary monitor to left (to use pivot), even moving windows around is slow as hell. Setting a lower resolution and/or color depth didn't help either. It almost seems as rotating the secondary screen eats all of my system ressources. Is there a way to make it work? The desired setup would be: laptop lcd normal, primary, 1024x768 + secondary lcd, pivoted, 1280x1024. Having both monitors aligned normally works absolutely fine, even when moving a glxgears window around.
    Specs (thinkpad t41):
    Pentium-M 1.6
    1GiB RAM
    Mobility Radeon 7500 (32MiB dedicated)
Openbox+latest Xorg, xorg.conf is pretty much default...

it seems I have to respond myself to almost all of my questions on the forum lately LOL. Maybe I am not clearly expressing myself
Anyway, after talking to some people on IRC, I have found out that in order for rotation to work, I would need to enable the EXA acceleration method. Futhermore, there is a 2047x2047 texture size (virtual desktop size) limit for the radeon 7500 hardware acceleration. After messing with different settings, I finally gave up after finding a bug in xrandr which prevents me from using the requested mode correctly (see http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20083).

  • Making Bluetooth and Wireless Internet on a IBM ThinkPad T41 work

    Hello Everybody,
I’ve bought a second hand IBM ThinkPad T41 yesterday. I want to connect wireless with my wireless internet point. But I’ve come to notice that there isn’t any wireless support on my ThinkPad 41T. Also I want to make an original Bluetooth connection point on my IBM ThinkPad T41.
My question is: what is wise to do first, is it wise to check in my ThinkPad to search my wireless component (and how do I do that). Or should order parts in order to make the wifi and Bluetooth work on my ThinkPad. And so where is the best place to buy and witch parts do I need?
Thank you for reading my question, I hope someone has the answer.

To add Bluetooth you would need to replace the existing modem card with the following FRU; 91P7315 ThinkPad Integrated Bluetooth with 56K Modem (BMDC) for T40/p, T41/p.  Then you would also need to install the Antenna FRU; 13N5515 Bluetooth Wireless Antenna Assembly XGA.

Hi scottiecargo, welcome to the forum,
hate to disappoint you, but server OSes were never supported in SystemUpdate and neither IBM or Lenovo ever released drivers for server OSes for any ThinkPads.
I know some people have installed server OSes on ThinkPads, searching here and at http://forum.thinkpads.com/ might produce some driver ideas for you.
    Good luck

  • T41 Screen problem

    I have a 4 years old Thinkpad T41, 14.1" laptop.
Suddenly, this morning, when I turned it on, the screen remained blank!
Since that time, I have a have a dimmed screen, meaning that the screen displays the items, colours, etc, but
it is very faint! ( I can hardly see the items on the screen, only if light reflects on the screen )
The funny thing is that when I log into Windows XP, nothing, and I mean nothing, appears on the screen!
However, when I boot, or log into linux, the screen displayes the items, but very faint, as I described above.
Apart from that, the whole computer is running normally, hard disk, processor, etc and also the external monitor port
    is working normally as well.
Is this an inverter failure, a blacklight lamp failure, or an an entire LCD Screen failure??
How should I proceed from now on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marios.

I strongly advise people against replacing CCFLs on their own, since the chances of damaging/destroying the screen in the process are immens.
A complete lid with a screen in good condition can be had for less than $50 nowadays when it comes to 14" T4x/R5x machines...this would be my suggestion.
    Good luck.

  • Is it okay to run (windows server 2008) on a thinkpad t41

so do you think its okay to run (windows server 2008) on a thinkpad t41

    Hello,
Microsoift Windows Server 2008 (not R2, just the original release) is based on the same kernel as Microsoft Windows Vista.  I would expect it to run about as well as (or as poorly as) Vista does on a ThinkPad T41.

I install (almost) all drivers from this location (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/DSHY-45XN9C.html), but I have problem with two drivers (in device manager) one is PCI Ethernet Controller (I think it is from network card) other in PCI Serial Controller (don't know what is it)?
Where can I get this two drivers (especially for network card)?

  • ThinkPad T510 Ethernet Card Driver on Debian Lenny

    Hello,
I just bought my first Lenovo laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad T510, and received it just yesterday. I partitioned the HDD and installed Debian Lenny on it. During the installation, Debian was unable to detect a network connection and throws up saying that it can't find a network connection and that if I knew the driver for it, I can select it from a long list. I was using direct Ethernet connection.
So from the list, I tried about 15 of them (just the ones I thought are possible candidates) and no success. I managed to install Debian without configuring that. I can boot into Debian, but I can't connect to the Internet via Ethernet so I can't get the wifi driver or anything. This is so weird. This is the only computer that Debian has ever complained about Ethernet drivers in my experience.
Any help, advice, suggestion is much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance. =)

    Hello,
Thanks for the response. I don't like Ubuntu or prefer it over Debian. I managed to solve this however (despite my lack of update here). I'll list the steps for Debian Lenny ( base install) for those who still wish to stick to it.
    1. Download e1000e driver from Intel's website. Unpack and install. Once set up, Ethernet will be working.
    2. Download the package iwlagn, which requires a kernel upgrade. Wifi should work after a restart and boot into the new kernel.
The only problem with the new kernel is the brightness/dim controls are no longer working. The following can be set up via alias for easier controls, but they seem to require root. It's not the best way, but I hadn't messed with it much because Squeeze was going to be released soon at the time.
    echo 4 > /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness
    echo 5 > /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness
I'm currently not on my laptop but I believe 4 is dim and 5 is bright. Or vice-versa. Easy enough to test it yourself.
But that's about it. Everything else ran fine. Since Squeeze is finally released, I will be trying it real soon.  =)
    Thanks for your efforts!

  • Thinkpad T440s Ethernet Adapter Automatically Disabled

    I have a Thinkpad T440s 20AQ with a Intel I218-LM ethernet adapter. The OS is Windows 8.1 x64
Since approx. half year ago, the ethernet adapter started to disable itself automatically every 1-4 weeks. The occurance of this problem has no pattern and is unexpectable.
When it happens, I cannot reenable it under Network Connection window. Rebooting the system has ~50% chance to solve this problem. The reliable way to solve this problem is disable and reenable the adapter under Device Manager.
