Thinkpad T420s - is it safe to run the CPU on PM 'Maximum Turbo' mode 24/7?

Hi guys,
I have been playing around with Power manager system settings and observed following core frequency behaviour:
Maximum Turbo - clocks all cores close to their Turbo Frequency (3.2GHz on mine) and they stay there, regardless if
                             under load or not
Turbo - frequency jumps between 2.4GHz and 3.2GHz
           - under load jumps to 3.2GHz and stays there (while under load)
Balanced - frequency jumps between 2.2GHz and 2.7Ghz
                 - under load jumps to 2.7GHz and stays there (while under load)
Low - frequency locked to 800Mhz, regardless if under load or not
First, I would like to ask for confirmation if this is really how it should work, and/or if someone is able to observe different behaviour.
Secondly, there is virtually NOTHING in the PM documentation that describes these parameters and what they do!
My main question: How safe is it to use the Maximum Turbo mode 24/7?
I can imagine that this CPU was not designed to run on 3.2GHz 24/7 and that the Turbo Boost is expected to occur only ocassionally.
Even if I choose to ignore the heat factor, would this mean increased wear on CPU?
Could the 'Turbo' mode be regarded as safe?
After some extensive testing, I can really see performance boost between 'Balanced' (which doesn't use Turbo) and 'Turbo'.
What I don't understand is why 'Turbo' seems to be jumping to Turbo Frequency, when the CPU is idle.
I would appreciate any comments and observations.
many thanks

I used HWInfo64 to observe the CPU frequency and Prime95 to generate the load

I have the T420s with the Core i5 processor. My observations are similar to yours, except when I'm on the Balanced and Turbo settings, the frequency drops to 800mhz when the CPU is not under load.
There is one option you forgot to describe: the "Lenovo Turbo Boost+" option in the power manager. This option appears to lock the fan at a high RPM to cool the CPU more quickly. This would reduce any thermal throttling when running at high clock speeds for a long period of time.
Regarding why "Turbo seems to be jumping to Turbo Frequency when the CPU is idle", please note that your CPU is never completely idle. WIndows and its applications run many processes and tasks in the background, and it is normal to see a burst of CPU activity every couple of seconds. To observe this, download the "Sysinternals process monitor" utility and watch all of the background activity that occurs.
Regarding the increased wear on CPU, running at high temperatures reduces the lifetime of electronic components. There are no problems other than the "heat factor", but excessive heat can be a significant problem.

  • Is the ThinkPad T420s available with i7 without getting the NVIDIA graphics?

I'm looking at ordering a Lenovo T420s soon for myself.  In both the reseller guide and on the Lenovo CTO site I don't see any configurations of the T420s that are offered with the Core i7 processor but without the NVIDIA Optimus graphics.  Is this an available configuration?

Will we be seeing those machines in April? I would be upgrading mine to recycle mine to a new hire. No approval yet, but depending on the timeline I may not have the option of waiting...
I like the look of the T430u but we use docking stations here so that one may not be an option for me. Besides I want a full power laptop because I find iPad fills the ultraportable space for me quite well right now.

  • What is a safe temperature for the CPU?

My new MBP's CPU is running at around 55-65 degrees idle, and upper 70's to low/mid 80's when doing anything intensive. (According to iStat widget)
I was wondering if this is normal or safe, as according to
    http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/366/2
The max temperature should be 60.1 degrees Celsius

My pleasure. Thanks for the star!
By the way, the temps you report are normal. Above ~65 C the fans speed to to provide more cooling (they idle at ~1000 rpm or ~2000 rpm depending on model, and have a max speed of 6000 rpm.

  • Running the report in Bitmap and Character mode

    Hi,
We have the reports which can run in both the character mode and Bitmap mode. The only problem I'm facing is font size in the character mode report. If the report is run in Character mode then the font size of the report will be greater. As the sizer is bigger, I'm getting the X symbol in the place of report. Can i reduce the size of the font. I'm using the font Tahoma (8 points). Reports 6i Version and Windows Xp is the OS.

Hi this may solve u'r problem
In Oracle Reports Designer, bitmap mode, you can make "C"
bold and in a different font and point size than "c". This
is because you are generating postscript output.
Postscript is a universal printer language and any
postscript printer is able to interpret your different
    design instructions.
In Oracle Reports Designer, character mode, the
APPLICATIONS STANDARDS REQUIRE the report to be designed in
ONE FONT/ ONE CHARACTER SIZE. Character mode reports
generate ASCII output. In ASCII you cannot dynamically
change the font and character size. The standard is in
effect so a report prints as identically as possible from
    both conventional and postscript printers.

  • HT3131 Will running the Macbook Pro 2011 in clamshell mode affect heat dissipation at all?

I'm worried about the heat not being able to escape when the laptop is closed.

I have used my new mid-2012 MBP in clamshell mode and monitored the temperatures and they were no different than when the lid was open, so it appears that the cooling system is unaffected. Very little heat dissipates upwards through the keyboard/upper case anyway, the heat is directed through the rear and underside of the case.

  • Is it safe to run a mpb with out a battrey

hi my battrey just died so i replaced it with one that was sat on my shelf (i think it's dead becaues it not charging) so i was wondering if it's safe to run the mbp with out a battrey till i get a new battrey ?

I misspoke (wrote). Actually the MBP lowers the processor speed when running without the battery.

  • Remote panels- server running application in log-off locked mode

I have not used remote panels before and was pondering if they would work if the server (Win Xp) running the application goes into workstation locked mode.
Company IT policy dictates that all PC's must go into locked screensaver mode after 15 minutes of inactivity. To reactivate, the user must log back in. Of course any applications continue to execute normally while in locked mode.
Would another user at another PC be able to view/control the front panel of a LabVIEW exe remotely while the server running the application is in locked mode?
    Thanks

The remote panel should continue to run while in locked mode.  If another user wanted to open the remote panel and view it, that should be ok too.  Remember that there are limits to the number of users that can be viewing a remote panel.  The limit depends on how many licenses you have.  info here
Because only one user can take control of the vi.  If the second user wanted to take control (and the first user had control) then the second user would not be able to take control.  The solution to this is to set time limits on how long a user can have control.  This is a configuration setting.

  • Running 32 bit apps in 64 bit mode

    Hi Everyone!
I've just had my old (in relative terms - only 5months old) mac replaced by apple with a shiny new one (loving apple right now!)... which runs natively in 64 bit mode... This is a nice surprise... except for the fact that I can no longer run the cisco vpn client (the inbuilt snow leopard client doesn't work as we have old cisco hardware on the network I'm trying to get to... long story)...
Just wondering if anyone knows how to run individual apps in 32 bit mode? I can't find what I need in the apple discussion forums or in google and I believe running the cisco client in 32 bit mode will solve all my problems...
    Thanks! & Much Appreciated

    Hi Lauren:
Among other things, I am not a networking "expert." I did look at the Cisco web site and my eyes rolled around in my head. Perhaps there is something there that might help. Frankly, when I was working and had a VPN networking problem, I yelled for my IT people!

  • Is it possible to downclock the cpu?

Does anyone know of any software available to let me run the cpu at a slower clock speed? When I'm going to leave the computer on overnight with a task running I'd prefer the cpu run a little cooler and not have the fans spin up to take-off speed.
I've tried using the CHUD tools to turn off one of the cores, but encountered some kernel panics.
    Thanks

Here is the easiest way and requires nothing extra. It cuts the speed in half.

  • If i upgrade my RAM will that be enough to improve performance even though the CPU stays the same?

I have an iMac (mid-2010) 4gb, Intel dual core i3 processor. OSX Mavericks (newest version)
I have moved almost all data to a 3TB external drive, freeing up much of the space giving me 871gb free storage on the main drive.
I am also running my libraries, back ups, & media from the external drive keeping the main free.
I am upgrading to 4x4gb to increase RAM to 16gb for the iMac.
However the CPU is still the same.
Clearly I am not very versed in understanding the hardware.  I've spent the last two days learning a lot!!  Everyone has been super helpful in
guiding me, and I feel I am almost there.
Just want to understand how I can get my iMac to function at its best when working in FCPX (newest version).  Especially
when it comes to rendering & exporting. My workload is heavy, multiple videos at 1080i HD.
I don't know much about how to read the Activity Monitor and posting a picture.  When viewing, and fcpx is running, the CPU will be
    upwards of 300%!!
    HELP!  THANKS

Yes, it is. It can be said to be almost ancient.
Note that this is not to say that your computer can't serve you. I am writing this on a 4 year old computer myself. It still works great (in fact better than when it was new, because it now has 8GB and an SSD). I can work on FCP X on it, too. I can run Mavericks and will be able to run Yosemite, too.
But I also have the chance to try a 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, and it is night and day :-)

Here's a picture of a while loop around part of your code. All it's doing is waiting to write until the user presses the save button. If you need it to do more, explain in more detail.

  • I am running OS X 10.7.5 on my MacBook Air, but I cannot download Mavericks. I tried downloading after a safe boot, but the progress bar hung up. Any other ideas?

I'm running OS X 10.7.5 on my MacBook Air, but I cannot download Mavericks. I've tried downloading after a safe boot, but the progress bar and the download hung up. Any ideas?

It can be a long download, so keep trying. My first download was at 3 am Cupertino time and took less than an hour. The second took close to three hours one evening.
