ThinkPad T440s + Nvidia = no docking?

Hi,
finally I see T440s with discrete graphic, but why no docking?
http://shop.lenovo.com/se/sv/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t440s/
"Traditional docks are not available for T440s w/Nvidia graphics - however USB docking alternatives are available."

Hi Jin Li,
thanks for explanation. This is very bad decision from Lenovo, at least for me. Docking connector saves a lot of minutes in my life every day and I'm not sure if those OneLink (USB) alternatives are good solution. I wanted to go for 2x 24" screens.
GT 730M is another story and honestly I was expecting a bit more powefull chip, but as I remember from last 4-5 generations, Lenovo always used some mainstream graphic solution.

  • Thinkpad T440s freezes with 2nd monitor via dock

Hi there - I have a strange problem with my Thinkpad T440s:
Connecting a 2nd monitor directly (VGA) works like a charm, however putting the Thinkpad into the docking station (with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock) freezes the system. Without the 2nd monitor the dock is working fine. When booting with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock, both screens stay black as soon as the kernel loads.
Is this a known problem / any ideas? Can I somehow help fixing this problem?
I know that I'm not the only one since I have found other people reporting this here: http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/165520 … -und-Linux
They also provided an xorg.log (http://pastebin.com/Qk7nHVwt) which shows nothing suspicious, I guess...

Same issue with my T440p. Happens with VGA, DP & HDMI (haven't tested DVI) on the dock. Undocking unfreezes it. If X is running the X server freezes and consumes 20% CPU, if none is running a kworker process does that. Even with no monitor attached it will freeze when the builtin monitor wakes up from sleep (again, undocking helps).
Here's a stack trace from the frozen X (^C'd while it was frozen from waking up the display, gdb only reacted again after undocking):

Edit: "Solved" by returning the laptop. This issue plus the loud (and not well-controllable) fan and the lack of support for the fingerprint sensor (different from previous ThinkPad models, it's from Validity Sensors) just aren't worth the trouble.

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock video monitor stopped working after updating NVIDIA software/drivers

My external video monitor had been working fine anytime I plugged my laptop into the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock until yesterday, immediately following a suggested upgrade of my NVIDIA software/drivers.
    NVIDIA information:
    NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.14.0702
    NVIDIA GeForce Experience 2.1.3
    NVIDIA Graphics Driver 344.11
I tried updating the docking station's firmware to V9.82, but mine was already at that revision.
Has anyone had this issue? Any solution out there?
    I miss my 23" display!

  • W520 and ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock (A033970) - Issues

I finally received my ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock today after a long delivery time from order. The basic USB 3.0 functions fully work, but I'm having some issues with the software that is supposed to control the dock for audia and video. In addition, Smart Audio will fail to initialize if I have the USB audio adapter enabled in the control panel (see below):
The user guide states that the control icon should be in the notification tray, but it is never there unless I first go to devices, right -click on the dock icon, and then select "Check for Updates" The icon will then appear for a brief time and then vanish. No setting of the tray customizations will keep it visible. This appears to be a bug. Also, the installation instructions are flawed in that the system will pick up the drivers from Windows Update BEFORE you get a chance to load from the supplied driver CD. The correct installation is to first load the CD, install the software, and THEN connect the USB cable for the dock.
Has anyone else had experience with the W520 and this dock? It is a slick hardware package for certain. I'd just like to get the control software setup to where it should be enabled.
FYI, here is the PCI tree for the setup:

OK, I found out the reason that I can't see the UI icon in the tray for Windows 7. The icon will ONLY appear if a monitor is attached to the dock. Otherwise, you need to access the controls via the Device Menu in Windows. The User Guide needs to be updated with the proper operational guidance. I wasted several hours debugging the issue only to determine that it was a known constraint of the chipset!
The following is from the DisplayLink website:
Why does the DisplayLink UI not appear in the Windows system tray?
            ID: 327 - Updated: Jun 29, 2012 - Category: Troubleshooting
    Symptom
The DisplayLink UI icon is not seen in the system tray. The DisplayLink UI  icon is shown below:
    Problem
    This can occur if:
A DisplayLink device has not been detected connected to the computer. The  icon will only appear if a DisplayLink device is connected. Please refer to this article to diagnose if your DisplayLink  device has been detected
If you have a product based on the DL-3000 (USB 3.0) family, the  DisplayLink UI will only appear if a DisplayLink device has been detected AND  a monitor is connected to the video output. The DL-3000 family implements  monitor detection and the DisplayLink UI will only be shown in the system  tray when a DisplayLink device and a display is detected.
    Solution
Ensure the a DisplayLink device is connected to the computer and a monitor  is connected to the video output of the DisplayLink device.

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - Prevents ThinkPad Twist (S230) from booting (Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit)

Hi, I upgraded to Win 8.1 tonight and found the ThinkPad Twist wouldn't boot at all when the USB 3 dock was plugged in. When it tried to reboot I just get a permanent blank screen. When I power down and do a cold boot, I get the ThinkPad welcome screen but no boot options line prompt below it and it gets stuck on the ThinkPad logo. The only way I can get it to boot is to unplug the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock USB cable from the machine then dreboot from cold again. It's a bit annoying and definitely didn't behave like this under Win 8.0 RTM just a few hours ago.
I also found the dock-attached external displays wouldn't work under Win 8.1, but updating the Dock firmware and the  DisplayPort firmware as mentioned in another discussion board fixed that prob at least.  But I still can't boot or reboot with the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock attached...  Help would be appreciated.
    TIA...

Thanks for the help. None of that fixed the problem, so I've run the tool and sent the results to DisplayLink support as you asked, with a link back to this thread. For your reference I have a Lenovo Service Request Number: 8001961163 on this problem. ( I mention this so we don't duplicate efforts).
Here's part of what I said to DisplayLink Support:
"I have all the latest drivers and updated the UEFI from Lenovo a couple of weeks ago. I restored a Windows 8.0 clone to see if the problem was present at that level, but I had the same problem, so I put Win 8.1 back. It used to work fine up until a week ago when I updated to Win 8.1, but as I said, I regressed to a Win 8.0 image and it persists there now, too.
The problem is when I restart Windows with the Dock connected, it’ll shut down normally then not reboot – it gets stuck on the Lenovo screen that asks to press Enter for the UEFI config. Same happens if I cold-boot it from power-off. Unplugging the USB3 cable and cold booting is the only way to get the PC going again.
Files attached show screen  shots of my troubleshooting progress. There was originally a “Mirage Driver” that the compatibility reporter was complaining about, so I removed that but still had the same problem after rebooting.
Personally, I think it’s a hardware or UEFI problem, as the problem happens before anything of Windows gets loaded at boot time."
    Best regards,
    Paul

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - Firmware update doesn't work

    Hello,
My company has bought over 200 ThinkPad USB 3.0 Docks to use with HP Folios to connect dual and single monitors.  Some users have experience multiple issues with this product and I am trying to determine how to resolve these issues.  I first want to update the firmware that is located here:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM014961
ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - Firmware Update - Lenovo Docking FW Update Tool V1.0
I have the USB 3.0 dock connected to the 3.0 USB port on the Folio.  The unit I am testing seems to be working fine as I have dual monitors up, external keyboard and mouse are working.
I ran the .exe, a command window comes up, and it attempted to look for the device.  The text is as shown:
    1. Initialzation<>   Success
    Start Search HUB
    !!!No device found!
Press any key to continue . . .
This has been tried on several devices and it simply does not work.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I have contacted support which was a complete waste of time because they have no idea what I am talking about.

I'm going to return my dock if possible.  My main problem is that I cannot view Vmware virtual machine which is required for work.  2nd I can't view photos on my dual screens, it just hangs saying "Loading...", but I can view them on my W520 LCD Display.  3rd, I can't view a downloaded video, as in an .mp4.  I disabled the hardware acceleration in Firefox, so I can see streaming video.
I have a Thinkpad W520 and an X1 Carbon and both exhibit the same problems with the dock.
I tried upgrading the DisplayLink Drivers to the 7.x version and that created a slew of problems.  The Dock firmware driver link in the OP doesn't work either.  As mentioned it couldn't find the device.  Uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the stock one cause lots of problems with my W520.  The dock would try to connect but it kept connecting and disconnecting and the cycle would continue infinitly.   It wasn't until I did a system restore that I could get it working again to where I can use the dock again.
I am extremely dissapointed with this dock.

Starting with Windows 8, the conventional Power Manager with charging thresholds is no longer officially offered.
Here's a third party tool to set what you need:

You still need to have the requisite power management drivers installed for it to function properly.

  • ThinkPad T440s will not turn on

Hi I'm to the forum and I have a problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad t440s. When I had switched HDD with another Lenovo and tried turning it on it just couldn't come on. So I tried removing its external battery and the ac adapter which didn't work. I also tried switching the old HDD back, and also tried removing its internal battery out for 60 seconds. Everything I've tried has failed, and would like to know if I should just send it to some Techs to look over it.
Also before I tried swapping the HDD I had previously turned off the internal battery because I heard people should.

  • Thinkpad T440s Ethernet Adapter Automatically Disabled

    I have a Thinkpad T440s 20AQ with a Intel I218-LM ethernet adapter. The OS is Windows 8.1 x64

  • X220 and ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - any success?

I've just bought a ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock for my i7 X220 having been at a site last year which had Fujitsu PR08 USB 3.0 replicators - those, once I had installed the driver, worked perfectly with two 1920x1200 displays.
Anyway I can't get my displays (LG IPS235 1920x1080), either via DVI-D or DVI-I with VGA adapter, to work plugged into the dock. They work fine when connected directly to the X220.
I suspect this might be a USB 3.0 issue as it seems the support for USB 3.0 on X220 is not quite what I'd expected (e.g. see https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-and-Mini-Dock-Series-3-with-USB-3-0/td-p...).
USB devices connect via the dock, but at USB 2.0 speed (which apparently is to be expected).
I can't see a network device at all (shouldn't it show up as another network adapter in adition to the built-in Intel 82579LM NIC?).
I have removed displaylink software and ThinkPad Dock software (originally I went to the latest 1.7.15 but tried cleaning everything off and using the older version 1.07.04 (no luck) then upgrading to 1.7.15 again).
I'm sure I read that this dock was compatible on a Lenovo spec somewhere. I have been through http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT073584
So far it's wasted a lot of time and been very disappointing - I'm kind of wishing I hadn't bothered  (I'm not sure if the supplier will take it back as I've opened the packaging etc). Has anyone had any more success with this dock and the i7 X220?

    A quick update:
Under Windows 7 I couldn't get the dock to work at all well - basically it worked as USB2 hub and that it. This included a long call to Lenovo and reinstalling the ThinkPad dock softare several times, from both the original CD and the latest ones. Note I even installed the latest version of DisplayLink drivers (7.5M1) directly from their site which did work (core went from 7.5.5172.0 to 7.5.54051.0) but gave a useful warning that the USB3 host controller software (Renesas emulation stuff) might need updating (and I found a 2.1.39.0 version, compared to the 2.1.36 Lenovo version, which I tried too - installed but didn't help). DisplayLink also mentioned (here) that Windows 8 had a different way to deal with older USB3 controllers like Renesas.
Anyway, I was all set to try send the dock back and thought I'd try Windows 8.1 (which I'd bought and was thinking of trying out on a new SSD).
On Windows 8.1 the USB 3.0 Dock seems to work fine: display, network and USB ports. Currently I've even got 4 displays running off the X220: 2 x DVI-D in the dock, 1 VGA plugged into the X220 and the built-in screen. I don't suppose this would be any use for games, but for business work it seems to be working fine so far
Note: I installed the latest DisplayLink driver again (mainly because I thought that I was missing transparent borders - turns out that's because Aero Glass has currently gone from Win8!).
For anyone who's interested here's the USB section of device manager - let me know if you need driver versions.
