Thinkpad T500 Ultrabay DVD/CD-RW Drive got disabled shortly after bios screen starts

My Ultrabay DVD/CD-RW got powered off shortly after the bios message appears on the screen. My Thinkpad is out of warranty for 3 months. I can open the drive in the first 5 seconds after starting the Thinkpad. 1-2 seconds laster it is powered off by thinkpad (as far as I can see).
I've checked google and this forum. I've found nothing related. Some people have written, that there is a bios option to enable the ultrabay and they described the same behaviour, but I've checked all the bios options and there is nothing about ultrabay.
This post is very similiar, but I don't have such an option on my T500:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/292026-14-writer-lenovo-thinkpad-t410-working
I've bought a new dvd drive, but this shows the same behaviour. It looks like something disables the s-ata port shortly after the bios screen appears.
Bios Version 3.22
Embedded Controller Version 1.06
I've tried to reset the bios to setup defaults, but this didn't change anything.
This is not OS related. The drive doesn't appear in bios boot (F12), Linux, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Actually I just found it it is under security for some crazy reason. There is 18 hrs i'll never get back.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Failure of the BBID credentials will never wipe a BB. What actually happened was you incorrectly entered your user-created device-lock password too many times, and it then proceeded with wiping the device, as per the requirements of the security level accepted when enabling that feature. There is no way to stop it.

  • Logical drives got in accessible after deploying removable storage policy

    Hi,
In my environment i had deployed an GPO for to block removable storage through Administrative templete but it got applied on couple of VM as well and now other drive in that VM is not accessible giving access denied.
    Need urgent help in this.
    Regards,
    Deepak Sharma

    Hi Deepak,
    >>it got applied on couple of VM as well and now other drive in that VM is not accessible giving access denied.
Does this mean that we don't want to apply the GPO to these VMs? If yes, we can use security filtering to filter out these VMs from applying the policy settings in this GPO. Besides, we can run cmd command gpresult/h report.html
to collect group policy result report to check how group policy settings get applied. Note: to collect computer part policy settings, we need to run the command with administrative privileges.
In addition, regarding security filtering, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

  • DVD or CDROM drives unrecognized when installed after Solaris 10

I have a number of SunFire V120s. All had Solaris 10 installed via the network and none had an optical drive installed. Since that time I have added CD or DVD drives to several of the systems. None of these drives will mount any media. The drives are recognized by iostat and I have run devfsadm with the clean option. Vold is running.
In an effort to validate the functionality of the drives I have reloaded one of the system from scratch, again via the network. This produces a system that will recognize and mount the optical drives.
Can anyone tell me how to correct this issue without having to reload all my systems? I'm sure it is something simple and stupid, but I can't see it.
    Thanks in advance.

    have you tried
    # touch /reconfigure
    # init 6
    OR
    # reboot -- -rCDROM on Solaris is usually linked to device /dev/sr0. You can determine the name of the device by entering the following command:
    #  ls -al /dev/sr* |awk '{print "/" $11}' Check this link: http://www.softpanorama.org/Solaris/Disks_and_filesystems/mounting_cdrom_on_solaris.shtml

  • Wireless LAN driver can't load after BIOS update NB550D

    Hi
I have a new NB550D and have jst installed the recommended BIOS update. Now the Wireless LAN driver can't load (error code 31).
I tried installing the lestest driver off the Toshiba website but it still can't be loaded by Windows...
Everything was fine before this! Any ideas?

    > In the Device Manager the Atheros Wireless is shown
This means that the Wlan driver was installed properly and the issue could be related to configuration between Wlan card and Wlan router.
You should check if the notebook can connect to Wlan router without the usage of any encryption settings.
Disable the WEP/WPA encryption and test the connectivity. Of course this should be done only for test attempts.
Are you sure that the Wlan is enabled? Enable this using FN + F8

Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.

The X300 uses 1.8inch HDD, the rails will not be able to hold the smaller drive if it's able to hold T500's 2.5'' drive. Also, X3xx series doesn't require HDD caddy. I think this is what lead_org meant.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can not find driver for Thinkpad T500

I can not find driver for Thinkpad T500? Could you please help me?
Moderator edit: Matched Subject to content.

Thanks to the folks at Kepware. I was able to get this working for CompactLogix L32E.
Step 1: In NI OPC Server Create a new Channel. Channel Name can be whatever you want.
Step 2: Device driver will be ControlLogix Ethernet.  You can also enable diagnostics if you want.
Step 3: Network adapter. I used default setting.
Step 4: Write only latest values.  Duty at 10. ( These are default settings and are recommended.)
Step 5: Finish new Channel setup
Step 6: Click on Icon to create new device
Step 7: Device Name can be whatever you chose.
Step 8: Select Device Model in this case CompactLogix 5300
Step 9: Device ID For me was IP Address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX,1,0    (Note the 1 directs path to backplane. The 0 to the slot where processor is)
Step 9: Device timing.  Leave at defaults.
Step 10: Auto demotion leave unchecked.
Step 11: Leave at defaults Do not generate on startup Delete on create and allow subgroups
Step 12: Port and watchdogs at default settings
Step 13: Project options leave at default. (In my case I changed to short as that is what most of my tags were)
Step 14: Create tagname from device.
    Step 14: Finish Device setup.
    You now have two options.
Option 1: Start creating tags as you need them. (This is what I did)
Option 2: Right Click newly created device and select properities.  Then select database creation and click auto create.
Go To Lookout  and create new driver.
    Select OPC Client
Server name will be from dropdown menu. National Instruments:NIOPCServers
    Click okay
You should be done and smiling.

  • Upgrading Hard Disk Drive of Lenovo THINKPAD T500 2055 ?

    Hi there,
My personal laptop is Lenovo THINKPAD T500 2055, and its main specifications as follows:
    - Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2).
    - 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB (2 x 4 GB) 1066MHz DDR31066/PC38500 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM Kingston
    - ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 with 256MB.
    - 160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm.
I really need to upgrade the Hard Disk Drive to a bigger size (500 GB, 7200 rpm). and, my major questions are as follows:
    * Could you please advise me on which Hard Disk Drive (500 GB, 7200 rpm) should I buy for my T500 laptop?
For example, I found (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NSBF32) But I have no idea what T500 supports and what it doesn't... Therefore, I need your help to guide me about this matter. In other words, How do you know if ABC-Hard Disk Drive fits with T500 and XYZ-Hard Disk Drive doesnt fit? What is the clue in knowing what T500 accepts?
    My another question is:
    * How easy is it to remove/replace Hard Disk Drive in Lenovo ThinkPad T500 ???
I already watched CRU Removals/Replacements on (http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/R61_T61/index.html), But the clip is for ThinkPad R61 and T61. So, Could you please help me how to handle it with T500 ?
I would greatly appreciate your inputs.
Thanks for your consideration of my request, and I very much look forward to hearing from you soon !

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Any SATA drive that is 2.5'' wide and 9.5mm high will work in your T500. The drive you linked to meets the requirement and thus will work.
For removal and installation instructions, have a look here:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-71568.html

  • T61 DVD/CD-RW drive fails to read and crashes

Hello Everyone, I hope people still visit this area of the forums!
I've highlighted and bolded the symptoms to make them easier to find.
I recently purchased a T61 6457-C15 on eBay, and have been in the proccess of setting up and customizing it to suit my tastes. When I recieved the laptop, it looked as though Windows had been restored to original factory state, plus some free software, so I proceeded under that assumption. First I used Windows Update to download all the updates that it could find including IE8. I wanted to have an anti-virus program running on my computer before I used a browser to access the internet. I ran IE8 and went straight to the Microsoft Security Essentials website and downloaded the Install program. At this point I tried to remove the pre-installed and expired Norton Internet Security using the built-in uninstall, but it failed. A message box popped saying that I needed to put the Norton installation disc in the CD-ROM drive so that the uninstall program could find a Norton support file. My computer did not come with any discs, but my mothe had bought Norton 2008, so I took that disc and put it in the drive. The drive started spinning right away, and the uninstall program found the file it was looking for in a few seconds. The support file directed me to the Norton website to get their removal tool, which removed Norton from my system in short order. Afterwards, I ran the Microsoft Security Essentials install program and got MSE running on my computer before doing anything else.
Then I went to the Lenovo support website and had it auto-detect my system. That took me to the support page for my system, where I went to the "Downloads and Drivers" page. I downloaded Access Connections and ThinkVantage Toolbox for Vista 32-bit (my OS is Vista Business 32-bit). I then used Lenovo System Update to retrieve all the updates it deemed neccessary from Lenovo, including those for itself and system components, both software and firmware. There were 35 or more updates suggested, and I trusted the software, so I started downloading them all. I'm not sure, but I think that a DVD/CD-RW drive update was included in the list, but I can't remember if it was auxiliary software, drivers or firmware. After Lenovo System Update was convinced that it had all the neccessary updates, I downloaded Revo Uninstaller and set about removing uneccassary and unwanted programs from my computer and trimming the startup list. I did not touch any Windows or ThinkVantage components, and I searched each program online, so I'm sure that I did not delete or disable any drivers or system files, or anything from Lenovo. I mainly removed Apple products and non-functional software from my system, including an integrated camera driver (my system does not have an integrated camera) and third-party programs that were already missing files or otherwise inoperable when I got my computer. Up to this point I had been using a gigabit ethernet connection to download software; I had not used the DVD/CD-RW drive except for the one time I specified earlier.
Now that I had my system set up to my liking, including personalization and power settings, I started to install my first program: Command & Conquer the First Decade from a DVD-ROM. When I put the disc in the drive and closed it, it took a few seconds for the drive to spin up, and once it did, it was constantly running at high speed and I could hear the reader constantly moving back and forth quickly. After a few minutes the disc's install menu finally appeared, so I clicked on the install button. I waited several minutes but nothing happened, so I tried to view the contents of the drive by going to My Computer > DVD/CD-RW drive (D, right clicking and selecting explore from the menu options. When I did that, the address bar of the My Computer window started to fill up with a dark gray progress bar and said "loading (D", I think with the drive or disc name after it. After it took several minutes to fill completely, nothing happened. I waited a few more minutes to see if anything would change, (nothing did,) I clicked on the X button in the top right corner of the window to close it. A few minutes and clicks later, the My Computer window was labeled as (not responding), and the window itself became grayed-out. I started Task Manager and tried to close the My Computer window, but the entire Windows Desktop disappeared along with it, saying that it would attempt to restart. Even Task Manager became non-responsive and quit after closing My Computer. After a few minutes of staring at my background (and nothing else), I ejected the disc, and Windows Desktop reappeared immediately and acted as if nothing had ever been wrong.
I checked Device Manager, but neither the DVD/CD-RW drive nor any of the ATA controllers were flagged; in fact they all said they were working properly with up-to-date drivers. I ran the ThinkVantage Toolbox diagnostics on the drive using a data CD, a music CD and a different DVD-ROM, but in each case the drive failed the tests and a message box popped-up saying that the discscould not be read because they were scratched or there was a hardware problem. I checked the discs both before I put them in and after I took them out, and they were not scratched; also, all of the discs are publisher-manufactured from a software or music company. I restarted my computer, booted the Rescue and Recovery option and Ran PC-Doctor from there. I ran the same drive read tests with the same failure results. The entire time the drive was behaving the same way it had when it first failed to read a disc. Next I removed and cleaned the drive both inside and out with a can of compressed air; I also cleaned the ultrabay itself. Finally I tried fixing the problem with Microsoft Fix It, but when it automatically ejected the drive and i put a disc in, the disc became trapped in the drive and Windows froze up like before. I had to restart Windows twice (once with a BSOD) in order to get the disc out. When the disc was removed the computer went back to normal operation once again.
Please help me, my DVD/CD-RW drive is a Matshi ta UJDA775, my operating system is Windows Vista Business and my T61's model number is 6457-C15. I have tried all the troubleshooting fixes and none have worked. I have tried updating drivers and using diagnostic software and they have not worked. I have tried disabling drag-to-disc burning and it has not worked. I have treid removing and cleaning the drive and that has not solved my problem. I did notice that the driver for the "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI controller" is the only related driver that can be rolled back, so maybe that might fix it. I'm also wondering if a firmware change caused this, and if so, if there is any way I can undo that. The only other fix I've heard of that I haven't tried is editing the registry, but I'm hesitant to do that. I haven't tried booting from the CD drive because I have no bootable CDs and I'm worried that my computer might get stuck in that mode. I'm hoping that someone can tell me what I can do to try to fix this problem, preferably without wrecking my computer. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
P.S. Just adding a note; I went through both the Microsoft and Lenovo Update histories and the only related updates I could find were: ThinkPad BIOS update, Easy Eject utility, Intel Matrix Storager Manager driver for Windows (32-bit), and maybe one of the two Intel Chipset Support for Vista updates. I tried rolling back the AHCI driver but it had no effect.
    Solved!

Well, my problem is fixed, and here's how. I had some trouble figuring out how to contact Lenovo technical support; online options directed me to the IBM support website, which was clearly designed for businesses. Selecting the "Call technical support" option on the Lenovo support website and then choosing my country gave me a 24/7 hotline number. After waiting about five minutes on hold, a nice young fellow by the name of "Tyrese" answered (I maybe misspelling his name), but the connection was so bad that we could barely hear each other. Although he semed eager to help, when I told him my problem the first things he suggested were simple, like cleaning the drive, However, when I told him all of my efforts, described above, to fix the problem myself and read him the log from the Rescue and Recovery diagnostic program, after he checked the error codes against his computer database he promptly replied that the only fix was to send out a new drive. I was happy to have gotten such a successful resolution to a support call in less than fifteen minutes; apparently, all the work I had done trying to solve the problem myself had paid off in a way. Unfortunately, although I had tried to spell out my address for him, some of it got left off of the address label, which caused some trouble in receiving the new drive. Once I got it, I installed it using the uninstall & remove (old drive), shut down, start up, insert & install (new drive) method that I referenced earlier in this topic. I've been using the new drive since then without any trouble, so I guess that the only fix was to replace the drive. Also, I noticed that the new drive was a Hitachi, perhaps a T400/410 or T500/510 Ultrabay Slim drive, which should help me avoid the problems that other users were having with the older Matshi-ta drives. I hope this description helps anyone else having a problem with the optical drives on the T61/61p.

  • ThinkPad T500 won't start ...

    Hi everyone.
I am using this forum as i have no other options left, in fixing a Lenovo ThinkPad T500.
The first time, with both battery and power plug connected, or just battery / power connected, when the pw button was pressed, nothing happened (no video, no audio signals, no fan, no hdd, no status leds).
So, i disassembled the laptop, removed all it's components (memory module, keyboard, trackpoint, fingerprint reader, hdd, cd/dvd drive, lcd, wireless, internal modem, cpu, cmos battery).
After a reassembly of the laptop, at power on, status leds are like in the picture below, the cpu fan is running for a couple of seconds, and the hdd is running without the hdd status led flickering, but there is no image on lcd and no audio signals. I tried to power on the laptop with battery and power, just battery and/or just power. In the picture below, there are only the necessary components connected: cpu, memory module, lcd, speakers, keyboard, trackpoint, and also hdd and cv/dvd drive. I also connected a external monitor, but there was no video signal.
As i have no video and/or audio messages/signals, i can't fully diagnose the laptop. I am hoping that someone have had the same situation, or knows what might be the problem.
    I would appreciate any help!
    THANKS.

  • External USB enclosure for DVD Multi IV drive?

I replaced the DVD Multi IV drive (FRU 45N7451) that came with my T430s with a SATA Hard Drive Bay 9.5 mm Adapter III (FRU 43N3412) to hold a 2nd HD.
Now what to do with the DVD drive? The physical interface isn't the standard SATA connector that's used on HDs. Is there an external enclosure available for this drive from Lenovo? I don't need a DVD drive very often but for when I do it would be a lot more convenient to plug it into a USB port than to swap UltraBay devices.

To answer my own question, yes. I ordered this item and it arrived this morning. I now have a USB-connected external DVD drive that works with both my T430s and X61s, as well as other PCs. The flexibility that this gives me, e.g. to put another HD in the T430s, is well worth the small cost of the case. A single USB connection is sufficient to power the DVD drive so there's no additional cables or AC power supplies to worry about either.
The Lenovo DVD drive went into the case smoothly with the following minor issues:
    1. There is a small black plastic spacer screwed into the back of the DVD drive which I presume is used to keep the drive firmly in position when mounted inside the T430s. I had to remove that piece in order for the drive to fit in the case. I'll have to remember to reattach it if I ever want to put the DVD drive back into the T430s.
    2. The new thinner DVD drives now being installed on s-line ThinkPads leave a small gap between the top of the drive and the top section of the case. I stuck some foam spacers using double-sided tape on the inside of the top section of the case in order to keep the drive in position.
    Cheers... Dorian Hausman

  • T500 and ATI HD 3650 Driver Problem

I have a brand-new T500. Due to shipping limitations, this was the only model available and it shipped with Windows XP. My company has standardized on Vista Business so I purchased the recovery DVD's with it and loaded Vista as soon as I got it. After the final boot upon install I get an error "ATI Graphics Adapter Driver failed to load." I have been messing with it for about 2 hours now. I've tried uninstalling the driver completely and alternatively installing a) The Lenovo version from the website b) the Microsoft version from Windows Update and c) the ATI version from their website (won't even load).
    Am I missing something?

I need to buy another usb, pcmcia or mini pci-e wireless card.
Can you recommend one that works well? Because I never work with wifi cards on linux.
    sorry my poor english
EDIT 21/07/09: add more information (thinkwiki):
    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_ … Adapter_II
    EDIT 22/10/09:
Finally came the expected driver, I think it's premature but it works perfectly.
    Here the driver (r8192se_pci):
    32bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33927923/ … 009.tar.gz
    64bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34090326/ … bit.tar.gz
untar; make; make install; reboot and enjoy it
    I test it with:
    netcfg
    standar commands:
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    iwlist wlan0 scan
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MySsid
    wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    dhcpcd wlan0
The first time I compile the module, function correctly, but after scan for available networks I haven't any results.
    Recompile and everything worked again
[b]I edit the wiki, pleased read it and help me because my English is a bit basic.
    thanks

Please note that the T500 has different hardware configurations.
Other options in wireless card (for the T500): intel 5100 - intel 5300.
This models work fine under linux
