Thinkpad T530 Hard Drive Cloning

Hello,
I'm looking for best practices, recommendations, lessons learned, etc. for copying the hard drive contents of one T530 to nine other identical T530s recently purchased for software engineering usage.  A current snap shot of our old laptops shows that  we have 214 programs loaded (majority of these programs are not pre-loaded from Lenova), so I'm looking for the most efficient and painless way of getting all the laptops loaded with an identical image.  In the past we have used Norton Ghost but encountered issues with using legacy IBM Thinkpad laptops.  Does the built-in Rescue and Recovery handle this process?  Is a 3rd party product (such as Norton Ghost) recommended?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

+1 for Acronis.  You _can_ also do this with Rescue and Recovery, but it's quite a bit slower in my experience.
Pull a full drive image onto bootable media, then restore to the other drives when they are installed in the target machines.
[edit] Or boot Acronis stand-alone on each machine and clone from the original drive in an external enclosure/adapter.  The options re resizing and preservation of volume ID (probably not what you want) are somewhat different when cloning vs restoring.
Historically, there have been cloning problems with ThinkPads when the target drive wasn't actually installed when it was written.  Something to do with the way BIOS addresses the drives.  This may not be a problem with newer machines, but ti's generally recommended.

  • Thinkpad Twist- Hard Drive issues

Hello all! I have a ThinkPad Twist that is still under warranty. A couple of weeks ago I got a 2100 HDD detection error . I am currently based in a rural part of Mexico for work (for a few months) and called into the US service center and they said I needed a new hard drive. As you can imagine, I was pretty frustrated to have the laptop die like this when it is way less than a year old. Anyway, the support center said that they could not mail the hard drive directly to Mexico but that they could mail it to a colleague in the US who was coming out here this past weekend. I got the hard drive yesterday and, as requested, called up the support center and they said that their systems have been down so they could not walk me through the reinstallation process, as they had said they could. The attendant directed me to a document I'd that would supposedly explain step by step how to change out the hard drive but I looked it up and it is for a different model all together...in the meantime, I went ahead and opened the new hard drive. From what I can tell, it is an SSD and my system has a HDD. They look completely different-Help! Is there a way to install the SSD or do I have no other option but to have them send another one to someone in the US and then get it brought out to me? Thanks in advance for your help. Oh, and the nearest authorized Lenovo service provider (3rd party) is about a 16 hour bus ride from here....

do you have picture of the two hdd that you have in your possession?
This is the correct hardware maintenance manual for your system.

  • ThinkPad Twist hard drive issues TWICE in 1.5 years!

    Hi,
I purchased a ThinkPad Twist in early December 2012.  After about 3 weeks, I experienced a hard drive crash.  I took the laptop to Staples where I first purchased it who told me the drive crashed.  I then contacted Lenovo and after months of trying to get the problem resolved, I finally did get a working hard drive and a new keyboard as that apparently was also defective.  My computer was working again (finally) in April of 2013.
Now, literally a year later, I have experienced yet another hard drive crash as well as the motherboard going out according to Staples tech team.  They were shocked to hear I had only had the laptop for a year and a half and that it was a Lenovo as apparently Lenovo is a trusted name in laptops.  Apparently, my unit was a "lemon" to have experienced so many severe issues in such a short amount of time according to the Staples tech department.
I have always carried it in a padded laptop case, have never dropped it, and have not abused it in any way, shape, or form.  Yet, I currently have a dead laptop that will take hundreds of dollars to get working again.  Even if I did pay that to get it working, I have so little trust in the thing after 2 hard drive failures in such a short amount of time that I would only use it for internet and use our older Dell laptop (that we've had for 6 years with NO issues mind you) for any important documents and files.
I am hoping there is something that Lenovo can do to help rectify this situation as I clearly have some defective parts or an entire defective Twist laptop on my hands.  Please help!  Help restore my faith in the Lenovo name for both their products and their business/service.
    Thank you!
    Jeremy and Stephanie Bradshaw

Did anyone respond to you? I am having a similar problem and have heard there is an issue with the connection to the hard drive, but I'm not inclined to get it fixed since I've had horrible experience with Lenovo customer support so far.

  • ThinkPad T500 Hard Drive "Holder" Part Number(s)??

I have a ThinkPad T500 ca. late 2008, I want to buy another hard drive "holder" for it just like the one holding the existing hard drive.
Is this available at the parts store, what are the part number(s) involved??
Can someone please point me in the right direction??
    Thank you, Tom

The X300 uses 1.8inch HDD, the rails will not be able to hold the smaller drive if it's able to hold T500's 2.5'' drive. Also, X3xx series doesn't require HDD caddy. I think this is what lead_org meant.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thinkpad x100e Hard Drive Clicking Sound

I don't know if it just a faulty hard drive or the way it is suppose to sound, but I can hear the clicking on the hard driver every time it is reading the hard drive. I just bought this on Monday January 25th and got it in the mail on the 27th. The first day I booted it up, I noticed it have a slight clicking sound. Didn't really think anything about but I have noticed that it had started to click more often. I have not noticed any problems with windows yet, no errors or it crashing/restarting. I ran Lenovo's software to check out the harddrive and it came up with no problems, at least on that end.  But the clicking is audible enough to hear it from 4-5 feet away, if you are trying to listen to it.
I am just wondering if I should send this back to get it fixed before I actually start using it, or if this is just a typical sound.
    Thanks,
    cpbs

Hello cpbs, welcome to Lenovo forums!
Some hdd´s are clickier that others and a faulty hdd on such a new machine like yours is rather unlikely.
The noise maybe distort you, because the whole system itself is very quiet?
Please tell us your model number, not S/N, OS and used HDD attached to your system, when posting issues, then it will be easier to narrow it down to specific configurations.

  • IBook Hard Drive Cloning

I recently gave new life to a ibook g4 with a new hard drive. But when i insert the OSX insall disk at boot, holding down option or the c key nothing appears just the ? and the mac logo on a folder. I was wondering if i could clone the hard drive on a ibook g3 to the ibook g4 and just use that. or would that violate the EULA?
    -Thanks

The installation from the G3 wouldn't have the right drivers for the newer machine.
Are you certain the optical drive works in this computer?
Try holding the option key while booting; this should bring up the startup manager.
Are you using the install discs for this iBook?

  • ThinkPad Edge hard drive replacement and OS install

The original drive has failed but managed to copy most users data.
Tried to run image backup but drive is too far gone.
Also tried cloning drive with Acronis boot disk but still fails.
Is there an ISO of the image I can download and burn a factory image restore disk?
I don't want to have to install from a Windows DVD then download all the drivers and software if that is even possible on this model.

    hi antitruster50,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Just to verify,  did you created a usb recovery drive using this method and tried to boot from it? If you did and it doesn't work, check if you see the following in the BIOS and set it accordingly:
    Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled (if applicable)
    Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Disabled / Other OS (if applicable)
Alternatively, you can also do the following:
    1. Booting from the stock 500GB, mount the SSD into the Ideapad S210 using a 2.5" SATA enclosure
    2. After successfully mounting the SSD, use Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home free trial to migrate the OS, drivers, app, etc. from the stock HDD to the SSD (complere guide here). When successful, remove the stock HDD and put the SSD in place and observe (no need to change any settings in the BIOS).
Let me know how it goes.

  • ThinkPad T420 Hard Drive Size Descriptions

    Hi
I have just bought a pre-owned T420 still within its warranty and restored to factory settings. It was sold to me as having a 320GB drive. Windows shows the main C Drive as having 232 GB free of 280 GB with 5.67 of 15.6 GB free in the Lenovo Recovery area.
    280 plus 15.6 = 295.6 GB.
Is it normal for this to be described as 320GB ?

Oook ! I have just Googled this - and it seems to be perfectly normal.

  • All applications were "?" On the dashboard after time machine restore to new hard drive...what went wrong?

    Hi folks
I used the cmd R option on booting the MBP and did a disk scan and it reported errors that could not be fixed/repaired.
So I opted to install a brand new 1Tbyte Seagate hybrid hard drive and restore from my time machine backup.
So I installed the new drive in the MBP...it stated that it needed to restore from the internet and I was treated with a rotating globe for about 10 minutes.
It then gave the normal restore options and I opened to format the new drive as a mac drive etc...
Selected the most recent TM backup from USB drive and pointed it to the new formatted HD in the MBP.
So far so good I thought....it said it was restoring....
waited about 4.5 hours and apparently it completed when I was out so I did not see any messages just a normal looking mavericks desktop BUT with "?" In the dashboard where all the applications icons should be?????
I assume something went wrong somewhere so I reinstalled the old HD and restarted TM and it's not starting to backup all 493Gbyte of disk whichI. Understand is normal after a full restore.
So...what to do now??? I'll wait for the 7 odd hours of TM to complete but how best should I proceed with the new HD etc...should I reinstall and copy mavericks to it from a memory stick and then attempt a new restore from the recent TMS backup? Or will this cause issues....
I also have an Inateck hard drive cloning device (brand new never used) so I had wondered if I should simply install the old drive and new drives into this and start the cloning mechanism? OR will this simply clone the errors that were reported on the old drive when it was in the MBP?
In short I'm not sure what to do for the best now and would welcome helpful suggestions as to how to proceed.
    thanks
    Nick

    <<<<UPDATE>>>>
If at first you don't succeed...
Last night after the new 493 Gbyte time machine completed. I once again installed the new drive and restarted the MBP ...waited 10 min for the internet to download the basic disk utilities...restarted the restore from TM and waited 6 hours...Happy days it worked perfectly and like a rocket...the old disk had a read write speed of approx 50-60 Mb/s the new one (hybrid drive) measures at 100-110 Mb/s...programmes open and close noticeably faster and it's better than when the MBP was new...
Apparently this new hybrid drive "learns" frequently used programmes and caches parts that improves start up time etc as time progresses etc...the MBP now starts from cold boot in less than 1 minute compared to 2 plus before...I know minutes should not really matter but it does improve the user experience. I should add I have 16G of RAM installed which does make a difference with Photoshop and Aperture etc.
Hope this helps others or at least encourages people to try hybrid drives over the much more expensive SSD option.

  • How do I set Catalogue to new larger internal hard drive and then delete the files from the smaller

I have just had a new 1TB internal hard drive installed in my PC and then the original smaller internal 500GB hard drive cloned onto it. The new 1TB is now Local Dick C and the smaller 500GB has been changed from C and is now Local Disk F. PSE11 is running from the new C and all my pictures are on both C and F but the catalogue is pointing to F. I want to delete all of the old files on F to free up space since they are all cloned to the new 1TB C, so I want the PSE11 catalogue to point only to the pictures on C. I have tried creating a new Catalogue and importing my pictures from C. The images come in and look connected to C but, when I close PSE11 and then reopen that new catalogue, the image path reads F, as does the original catalogue. So, now I have two catalogues apparently point to F but I want to: 1) have only one catalogue pointing to C; 2) the delete catalogues pointing to F; 3) then reformat F: so I have a clean 500GB old hard drive for future expansion. Can some please help?

Grant, all I can say is that another user was having almost identical issues a month or so ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the discussion thread now but my feeling is that it never resolved satisfactorily while both drives were connected.
To save you a lot of work formatting, copying, erasing and so forth why not just unplug the SATA cable from the old drive and see if the Organizer then starts behaving nicely with the new drive. If it does then you can go the destructive route on the old drive.
Hopefully the poster who had the similar problem might read this and update us on his/her situation - if it got resolved and how.

  • External Hard Drive/Time Machine Questions

The hard drive on my four-year-old-plus MacBook Pro is apparently failing, and I can't afford a new MacBook Pro yet. So I bought an external hard drive, hoping to clone my hard drive and run my computer off the external hard drive if the main drive crashes.
At the moment I can't afford an Apple external hard drive, so I bought a non-Apple model. So I was surprised when it asked if I wanted to use Time Machine to back up my data while I was setting it up. I chose yes, though I'm not even sure if I've set it up correctly.
OK, let me start from square one...
My external hard drive has 1 TB of storage space, and I initially formatted it in one big block - no partitions. If I want to boot off a cloned hard drive, will I have to partition it, so I'm booting off a particular partition?
If I do have to partition it, I understand I can use Apple's Disc Utilities to do the job. Can anyone tell me if there are any special steps or conventions I need to follow? I'd probably create a partition of about 200 GB for my cloned hard drive. (I'm currently using about 120GB on my internal hard drive.)
In fact, I might make two separate 200-GB partitions, cloning my hard drive to one partition, then cloning it to the second partition a few weeks later, just for security.
My first Time Machine backup is scheduled to begin in just half an hour or so. Will it merely copy all my files to the external hard drive, or will it create an operable clone? Approximately how long do you think this initial backup will take, using firewire?
Also, once I get my hard drive cloned, I'm thinking of booting up with the clone and upgrading to Snow Leopard. If everything works fine, then I'll upgrade my main (internal) hard drive to Snow Leopard as well.
Sorry for all the questions. I think I understand the basics; there are just a surprising number of details to figure out.
When I can afford it, I hope to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro 13" or 15" and an iPad, which I'd like to take to work with me.
    Thanks for any tips.

    David Blomstrom wrote:

    yes.
you would need to partition it and use one partition for cloning and the other for TM backups.
i don't recommend such a setup, however. it's like putting all eggs in one basket - if (not when) the external fails, you'd have lost both backups @ the same time !
If I do have to partition it, I understand I can use Apple's Disc Utilities to do the job. Can anyone tell me if there are any special steps or conventions I need to follow?
    yes.
you can use the instructions in [this|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] user tip.
I'd probably create a partition of about 200 GB for my cloned hard drive. (I'm currently using about 120GB on my internal hard drive.)
the partition for the clone needs to be just a big as your startup disk (e.g. 120 GB). the partition for TM backups, otoh, would ideally be 2-3 times the size of your startup disk.
    more information [here_|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/1.html].
Will it merely copy all my files to the external hard drive
it will back up everything on your startup disk unless you specifically exclude files from backups.
or will it create an operable clone?
    no.
use software such as _*Carbon Copy Cloner*_ to clone your system.
Approximately how long do you think this initial backup will take, using firewire?
the initial backup could take overnight - depending on how much data is to be backed up.
Also, once I get my hard drive cloned, I'm thinking of booting up with the clone and upgrading to Snow Leopard. If everything works fine, then I'll upgrade my main (internal) hard drive to Snow Leopard as well.
yes, that will work just fine. in fact, some users recommend this technique even if the internal drive is not about to fail - better muck up a clone than the regular startup disk.

  • I'm Going To Have A New Hard Drive Installed (500GB)

    Hi...
I’m going to have a 500GB hard drive installed (highest available so far - from what I know) in my MacBook Pro (bought March 2008) 17inch. I was wondering if there is anything I should pay attention to? And I’m going to go with a clean install (not to have the hard drive cloned over) - after I get it home, I’ll put the OS in myself and then all my other software etc... But what cross’s my mind is my “iTunes”...
What’s going to happen to my iTunes - and what can I do to keep all my songs and stuff?
Any comments, suggestions and opinions are welcome....
    Thank you in advance...

No..... Your right - it just takes time for things to sink in - putting together a software program along with a “case” that will make my removed hard drive act like an external hard drive takes time to sink in.
Is this right? Am I going to have a new empty hard drive in the laptop with my removed hard drive in a case, enabling it to be used as an external hard drive? If so, then were dose the software go?
Do I need to download it first to the (soon to be removed) hard drive? And then access it when it becomes an external hard drive?
But the whole issue might be irrelevant because I really want to do a new install of my OS - I’ve been through the wringer with screen sharing and other products that have come and gone (passwords, screen names, ID’s, emails) MobileMe, Time Capsule, iWeb, BlueTooth, In home networks, Skype, iChat, AIM, Bonjour.... My head is spinning... Because my iMac and laptop are all using my one email (or at least at first they were) and one password and one email (sounds simple) but it’s not... If you wanna talk to someone using my iMac while I’m out and about in town - the computer’s think your trying to talk to yourself, the same email address (same passwords etc) - and in a lot of situations, you run into trouble trying to do this - or at least - you get confused (is that my email for the iMac or is that the email for my laptop - system preference this, system preference that)...
I’m even ready, willing and able to forget about the songs on my iTune just to have a clean install (but that’s just between you and me)...
So in closing - as long as that removed hard drive can be used as an external hard drive with the use of a “case” then I’m good to go... I’ll take it from there....
But please let me know if I can not use my soon to be “removed” hard drive as an external hard drive... Then I’m (maybe) willing to forget about my iTune’s... (I don’t know - I’ll see)....

  • Suggested Ultrabay Hard Drives?

    Greetings,
I'm about to get a T410 from work, replacing a Z61t. I'd like to put a second bootable drive in the UltraBay running Win7 as a test partition ... am I correct in that I need the following parts?
ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (part 43N3412, http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=38&Code=43N3412&current-category-id=6D8E5191FB0B45CBB39F45EB5B2B986E&&hide_menu_area=yes)
Any SATA drive that fits (e.g., http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=38&Code=43N3411&current-category-id=30DCE24D4AD945988722793CBEEC65B3&&hide_menu_area=yes)
Any suggestions as to specific drive models would be appreciated - I'm having a bit of trouble validating the size of the drive that needs to fit into this adapter, as I'd like to shop around for prices rather than just defaulting to getting something direct from Lenovo.
Presumably the Ultrabay HD adapter I have from a Thinkpad Z61t wouldn't work? Don't believe it can support SATA.
    Thanks in advance.

any 2.5 inch SATA Hdd with 9.5 mm thickness should be okay. the Z61t ultrabay uses a PATA connecting interface to the laptop, while the T400 and later uses a SATA connection, so they are not intercompatible as such.

  • How do I restore time machine alias files cloned from broken hard drive

My external hard drive broke (a tiny transistor broke off after the drive fell two feet to the floor) so I purchased a new one and had the Geek Squad clone what was on my old hard drive onto my new one. I was using Time Machine to backup my files. My external hard drive had a much larger capacity than my macbook pro, so I deleted a number of the files saved on my Macbook Pro, knowing that I could access my files whenever I plugged my ext. hard drive in.
After plugging my new external hard drive into my computer, however, I am finding only alias files and I do not know how to restore my data so I can access all of the files again.
Does anyone know how to restore my time machine data from the cloned data I had transferred from my broken external hard drive to my new external hard drive?
    Thanks!

    morrisck wrote:
An update - I finally took both of my HDs in to an Apple store and they confirmed my fear: only alias files had been transferred from my old drive, meaning Geek Squad charged me $100 for 850 MB of unusable files.
That has been clear since early in this thread.
Geek Squad has agreed to retry the process
Why pay them to do what you don't need done??? Get a refund and buy an enclosure, which you should have anyway for backups.
but I'm now wishing that I had received more sound advice when I brought the drives into them in the first place.
Don't know who gave you that advice, but I sure wouldn't trust them with my data!
The Apple rep. informed me that my HD works perfectly fine and that it just needs a new enclosure (which I can buy for $20 online, as opposed to paying $100 for a data transfer).
Ummm, the action to take seems very clear to me . . . .
