Thinkpad t60 graphics card

Can I add an additional graphics card to my t60? It currently has an Intel 950 incorporated on the motherboard. Can an additional card be added and if so how do you do that and what type is recommended?

I believe that you could add a card via Advanced Dock, but you can't add one to the machine itself.
Cheers,
George

  • Brightness unadjustable for "High Performance" in Switchable Graphics Card Technology

    Hello,
I have just transitioned to Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad R400(2787-A31)
However, after installing the Thinkpad Switchable Graphics Card driver, i am unable to adjust my brightness if i am using the High Performance mode. My laptop comes with ATi Radeon 3470 and Intel GMA 4500MHD.
I have already installed most of the drivers, and after some testing i realised that it was the switchable graphics driver that cause this problem. Before installation of this driver, i was on the ATi Radeon all the while and i can change the brightness.
I hope some one can help me with this driver issue. My installation of the drivers was from the support page. All except the PCI Simple Communications Controller has their drivers.
    Solved!

    Rosemars,
Thank you very much for solving the problem.
The key solution lies with the BIOS update. For people who cannot get the tool to work(mine keep giving an error message), there's an alternativie BIOS update utility at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70351
This is for R400 and T400s, for other models please select your model number at the Support page and find the utility.

No, they want swap the motherboard for free (I've also bough a 3 year additional warranty). I've to reinstall the Windows system to "proove" that it also not working correctly. And still not possible to destinguish between the 3 theoretical options listed below. Otherwise they will charge 380EUR + the price for the motherboard (guessing 200 EUR) which is not acceptable. Theoretically only the cause which are possible are:- Hardware problem
    - Driver problem
    - Windows OS problem I also uninstalled all graphic card drivers (Intel HD4600 and Nvidia GT740M driver in safe mode with Driver uninstaller). Rebooted. Afterwards with opened device manager to see the graphic card devices I was installing the latest driver package. Intel HD4600 driver installs well, when the Nvidia GT740M driver will be installed computer crashes instantly.https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e540/downloads/DS039880

  • Thinkpad Yoga 15, discrete graphics card disabled

I just purchased a Thinpad Yoga with a discrete graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 840M. It's disabled. I've tried the most recent driver from NVIDIA and the driver on Lenovo's site -- version 9.18.13.3360
Anyone have any idea about this?

    Hi Horseatingweeds,
As per the screen shot I think the drivers may have got corrupted, uninstall both the graphic drivers and run ThinkVantage System Update utility, and make sure whether the drivers are not updated from MS updates.
That seems a little old, so I looked around. There are later versions, up to 1.24 4/6/2015 for ThinkPad S1 Yoga: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds038334
Please do not update the BIOS manually, instead of that run ThinkVantage System Update utility to check for the exact drivers and application for your system.

  • 30 inch screen on T60 with X1300 graphics card: impossible?

y Thinkpad T60 (2613-CTO) has a Ati Radeon Mobility X1300 video card and I'm trying to use it to drive a 30 inch HP screen (a HP LP3065).
From browsing these forums I discovered I needed at least the Advanced Mini Dock to provide dual-link DVI output to drive this beast so I've got that but I can only drive it at half its real resolution 1280x800 intead of 2560x1600. This screen only provides full resolution or exactly half - there's no scaling.
Can I get this video card to display at the full 2560x1600 resolution?
I've tried disabling the main laptop LCD so it could provide some oomph to the external 30" HP one but Windows and the ATI Catalyst Control Ctr refuse to list the full-res mode. Is it there anything I can do? I prefer not buying a Advanced Dock and fitting a desktop PCI-E video card - too expensive. I would very possibly consider a motherboard upgrade (=video card upgrade) if it was the only way to go and not too expensive and would definitely work.
Here are the spec of the Ati Mobility X1300 (note its the mobility edition, not the PCI-E one):
    Driver version: 7.01.01.646
    Identity: ATI Display controller
    Memory clock: 319.50 MHz
    Engine clock: 391.50 MHz
It has only 64 dedicated RAM but apparently it can grab some off the system RAM (3GB) when it needs to.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Ash
FYI I have already posted this on the competiing forum but not got any knowledgable response so I'm hoping this community knows more.

it is not about the oomph or this. It is whether your video card support Dual Link output on the dock. Do you have the dual link dvi cable from the HP LCD, so i gather that it is not working?
If you need a cheap solution. Do the DIY Vidock upgrade, and get a cheap desktop grade video card.
Google DIY vidock on notebookreview.com, there is an detailed tutorial on this. You can do it for around 200 USD max.

  • Installation of ATI driver for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1

Dear Thinkpad users. After many failures and zero support from official resources, this is a comprehensive, unbiased installation procedure for the official ATI driver with Catalyst Control Center for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1. In my experience, the latest driver for these cards written for Windows Vista 32-/64-bit works flawlessly on Windows 8.1 and you will benefit from multi-monitor support, full HW-acceleration and the PowerPlay option in Catalyst Control Center as well. Install only the official ATI driver, no other modification required. (The installation may work also on non-Thinkpad systems, such as Dell etc. but I have not tested it on that systems)
    Installation procedure:
    1. Before installation, ensure you are logged as an administrator
    2. Go to ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Power Options’ and click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ option from the list on the left side of the window
    3. Go to ‘Shut-down settings’ on the bottom and disable ‘Turn on fast start-up (recommended)’. Unchecking that checkbox is very important because it will prevent the problem with start-up black screen on the computer.
    4. Go to ‘Control Panel’ again and choose ‘Programs and Features’, then click on ‘Turn Windows features on or off’
    5. Select the checkbox ‘.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) to turn it on and wait until the installation is completed
    6. Go to Windows update and install all important updates including those for ‘.NET Framework 3.5 as well
    7. Download ATI video driver from the website of your hardware vendor. For Lenovo Thinkpad T60, T60p users the latest ATI video driver is for Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), please visit http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t60... and download the driver
    8. Once you have the driver downloaded right-click on the file and choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu.
    9. Click on ‘Compatibility’ card then ‘Change settings for all users’ and check in the checkbox at ‘Compatibility mode’ with the option for Windows Vista as well as at ‘Run this program as an administrator’
    10. Double left-click and install the program.
    11. Go to the location ‘C:\drivers\WIN\VIDEO and open the file ‘Bin’ (for Windows 8.1 32-bit users) or ‘Bin64’ (for Windows 8.1 64-bit users)
    12. Right click on ‘Setup’ file; choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu and repeat the step 9
    13. Once you have set the properties, double left-click on that file and install the driver
    14. Follow the installation instructions and finish the installation
    15. Restart the computer
    cheers

  • T40 graphic card error

Posted: Tue Dec 05, 2006 12:09 pm    Post subject: IBM T40 freezing
I have a question about my IBM T40 laptop. My computer is working fine for almost 4 years. One day the screen suddenly went black when I was using it. I held the power button and reboot it, the system remind that there was a system error and asked me to send the error report to the Microsoft, I did, and then got a report back saying that there is a problem with the video card, and this causes the computer to restart again and again. The report provided 2 solutions, but even before I tried one, the screen went back. I held the power button and reboot again, and pushed blue Access IBM button, then I tried to recover to the factory settings, the computer started to reinstall, but before it finished, the screen became black again...I consulted quite a few computer experts, they all said this is the graphic card failure, and I have to change the motherboard...
I called IBM help service, they say because my laptop warranty period has finished, I will be charged if I want to get it fixed, and the charge is £193 + VAT + parts. But the market price for second hand T40 is just about £200!
I paid a lot more money for my IBM laptop than other people did for other makes, I did not expect the motherboard to be gone so quickly.
    Anyone has better solutions?

    Welcome to the forum!
What you're dealing with is a known issue on T4x/R5x series ThinkPads with ATi graphics. Basically, the graphic card starts detaching itself from the motherboard as a result of heating/cooling cycles and/or chassis strain.
The only permanent solutions to this problem are GPU solder re-balling, or motherboard replacement. Temporary fixes are numerous, the most popular one being applying several "post-it" stickers on the top of GPU.
    Good luck.

  • W500 switching graphics card

Hi, so on my w500 laptop specs, it says that it has 512 MB ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 graphics card that is switchable to Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD. I want to switch to the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator but I can't seem to figure out how to do it- I was told it was easy, but I'm not having much luck. If anyone could help me, that would be awesome, thanks!
    Solved!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Which OS are you using? The switchable feature only works in Win Vista and 7.
    Maybe this will help:-
"How do I tell the system to switch my graphics adapter?
To switch graphics adapters, left-click on the ThinkVantage Power Managerbattery icon in the system notification area. At the bottom of the pop-up menu there will be a Switchable Graphics sub-menu.
Note: Changing ThinkVantage Power Manager from Basic mode (default) to Advanced mode will cause the menu to look different. The menu will no longer be transparent and the slider is replaced with a list of schemes. The Switchable Graphics sub-menu is still at the bottom."

  • Win 7 on a31p / need driver for graphics card FireGL7800

    All greetings from snowy Russia!
I had to install Win7 on my laptop a31p, in general, I am very pleased with the speed and new features. All the drivers are set automatically, and even managed to get to work the battery icon in the system tray
But there is one big problem: I can not find drivers for FireGL 7800 graphics card
I wrote a request to ATI (now AMD) but ou redirected me to Lenovo, citing the fact that they do not write drivers for these cards.
I would be very grateful for assistance in finding the driver for Win7 or la Vista!
You can write me an email:     barmaley.russia  @  gmail.com

    Welcome to the forum!
There is NO driver for Vista or W7 when it comes Fire GL 7800 because it's simply considered underpowered to run any of these operating systems.
I've had to tweak the XP driver to get it working under W7, and results were less than spectacular, although not bad for a 7-year old machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thinkpad Twist - Graphic Capabilities

    Hello everyone,
Here in the next few months I am planning on buying a new tablet. The twist is appealing to me because I have owned the old T20, T60, R61e and T510 thinkpad systems. All of these laptops have worked well for me and I am in love with the trackpoint mouse. Sadly, Lenovo systems (especially the thinkpads) are not known for their graphic capabilities. I am 17 and am about to enter college I will be using this computer on the go and for simple web browing, word processing, and the occasional programming environment however I would like to be able to play games every now and then in my spare time. I am not looking to play anything on ultra quality especially the newest or most demanding games but I would want a machine that could at the very least play Skyrim. Have any of you Twist owners tried Skyrim and can tell me how it works or possibly post the results of a CanYouRunIt test based on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?
    http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
    Thanks,
    JC

    Hi, sniderjc
I just used a Twist and ran the applet from your link. This Twist is the 8GB RAM model with the Intel HD 4000 graphics card. According to CanYouRunIt, the system failed on the video card, but everything else passed. So you might be able to get it to work with an upgraded video card.

  • T400 Graphics Card question

My parents got me a new laptop (T400) for Christmas it has the Intel graphics card in it but I have theATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 Graphics card. Can I just swap them out or not? I would really like to use this card as I feel it is better just looking for some help on what to do.  If I can swap it out it would be great I do know how to change it out or should I have Lenovo do it for me since they got all the onsite warranty and stuff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi NomadA32,
    Welcome to the forum!
It is not possible to swap out or replace graphics card on T400, the graphics chip is part of the motherboard. There would in fact be only few handful of notebooks in market that have user upgradable graphics modules.
    Hope it helps.
