ThinkPad T60p fan replacement

Hello, the subject says it all, I need to replace the fan in my T60p asap... its coming on a year since I've got it and the fan was never an issue until a couple of days ago and now it sounds like it's on its last legs!  My question is what part numbers exactly do I need to reference for this? I noticed in the parts descriptions that there are 'discrete' and 'integrated' fans? I'm confused as to which part I actually need, please help me with this...
Thanks in advance,
Corey

ctrlaltdelete, welcome to the forum,
members would be able to better help if they know which T60p you have. If you post your Type and Model Number, or better add it to your signature, this would help. If it ends in "CTO" you will need to provide a description of the main components.

  • ThinkPad E420s fan replacement

    Hi All,
In my ThinkPad E420s, the fan is not very efficient, even after I cleaned it.
I would like to replace it. However, I have hard time to find it.
First, I am not sure what is the FRU number.
I found next possible option here http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd010926
    04W2000
    04W2001
    04W1749
    04W1750
However, how can I find what exact FRU number I need.
Second, where to buy it? Quick search of those 4 numbers on http://www.lenovospareparts.com/ http://lenovoquickpick.com/ did not yield any results.
    I would appreciate any guidance.
    Thank you!

    Hi Mihalych,
    Thank you for the reply!
If the system is shipped with graphic card you can order 04W2000, 04W2001 if the system is having only Intel graphics then you can order 04W1749, 04W1750.
    Hope this helps!

  • Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?

Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?  I've looked all over the Lenovo site, and I can only find the part number referenced, not a location to purchase it.
When I opened up my Thinkpad, on the fan, it said:
    Lenovo P/N 42W2461
    FRU P/N 42W2460
Has anyone here ever tried other merchants with success (eBay, etc.)?
(I'm out of warranty, and the fan gets noisy when hot, unlike when it was new, and I sometimes get "Fan Error" on bootup at the BIOS.)

    Hello,
According to this page on IBM's web site, you can call IBM Parts Help at +1 (877) 719-0841.
I believe this office is located in Boulder, Colorado, which means they will probably keep Mountain Time Zone [GMT-7] office hours.

  • T43p Cooling Fan Replacement

    Hi all,
Have a noisey cooling fan on my T43p-2686-DHU.  So, have puchased from Lenovo part 26R9074 "long fan 24".
Before, I open my Thinkpad for the first time.  Was wondering if someone has instructions on how to do this repair, pointer to pitfalls, or comments.
    Thanks in advance,

this manual will show all the steps involved. The technicians at depot also follow this manual for most repair processes.
Fan replacement is fairly straight forward.

  • R61i fan replaced, now goes into standby every 20 to 25 minutes

First post on this forum. Having paid a tech ($$$!) to come to my home to replace the fan, I've had the additional issue of standbys occurring at least once per hour which are without a clean power down option, only unplugging the machine actually works. The tech denies that this issue is related to the fan replacement. Friends (non R61i users) say it's overheating or possibly the heat sink is not correctly positioned. Is this machine worth trying to repair? Yes it's old and an XP but my situation is such that I need guidance as to my next step. Any help appreciated.

I have replaced the fan on my R61 myself 3 times. It failed the first time when it was 4 years old, and each time I replaced it with a used fan bought on EBAY. Maybe they were too used. All you need to do it yourself is a copy of a few pages from the Hardware Maintenance Manual, a tube of thermal paste, a screw driver and about 30 minutes of your time.
The last time it failed, I did not replace it. I bought a can of compressed air, and blew it over the fan blades, which were heavily coated with dust, and it has been working fine since then (although I do have a spare waiting to be used just in case).
I am thinking that possibly, the thermal paste was not reapplied correctly. You cannot have a heat sink not correctly positioned on an R61 as the fan and heat sink are one unit, and fit tightly in position. There are many vidoes on the internet that will show you haw to change a fan.
    Good luck.

  • ThinkPad T60p not getting started

    Hi,
My thinkpad T60p is not getting started. Whenever i switch on my laptop, the power and battery led glows for a second and goes away after that. And after that nothing happens. I tried by removing the battery for 1 minute and putting it back but nothing worked out. I got the same result of not able to start my laptop. My battery is fully charged.
Can anyone tell what could be the reason for this behavior?
    Thanks,
    Harish

    1) Lenovo recalled T60p batteries as it has lot of issues
check your laptop batter is recalled or not by using this link : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BATT-LENOVO
    2) remove your laptop battery and run the laptop with power connected & see if it started without any issues
in my case, it's working without battery and with battery i also had seen the same issue what you have. i got new battery from lenovo.
    Try your luck too...

  • Thinkpad T60p Video/Graphics Issue

I am running a Lenovo thinkpad T60p, WinXP SP2, 1 GB RAM, dual core processor @ 2.16 GHz, ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5200 video card.
I am certainly not trying to run Half Life 2 on my laptop, or watch super HD-DVDs. However, even the smallest exertion of video graphics or even online game turns out to run pretty slow, sometimes lagging. online videos full screen consistently lag, while resizing to a smaller window usually helps them run faster. Flash games run pretty slow, and changing the setting to "low quality" usually helps a bit.
Laptop was purchased 2 years ago, started noticing these problems about 2-3 months ago.
Why is my laptop incapable of running even simple videos and games smoothly? How can i isolate the source of the problem?

Which ATI offical driver should I use, as the driver for on ATI's webiste for ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5250 is refer back to Lenovo's website which is the one I'm already using and was last updated 04 Sep 2007.

First thing I would do is either download and install your sound drivers, or install "system update" and let it search for any updates you may need.
However, if this just suddenly happened, meaning it was working fine one day, then just stopped, then you could have some hardware failure, but I'd go this route first.

  • Thinkpad T60p with Win XP - Lost color on external monitor (only black & white)

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)
I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this:
    *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".
    * When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color
    * When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)
    * When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)
    * I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel
As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next.
I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Cats seem to have a strong affinity for that display mode — remarkably often we hear that they've typed in the correct keystroke combo for it, and yet they never seem to set it back to normal after using the computer. Not very considerate, but you know cats: consideration isn't part of the package.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad T60P 2007-8EU - Removing LCD Front Bezel

    Greetings,
I have just spent about four hours dis-assembling my Lenovo ThinkPad T60P 2007-8EU with the purpose of disabling the Blue Tooth device. One of the last steps before you do that is to remove the LCD Front Bezel. I have read the documentation and believe I have removed all the screws but I still can´t remove the Bezel.
    Document:
    Hardware refference guide
    MT 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2613, 2623, and  2637
    Pages 117 - 118
I have the 14.1 inch monitor . So the information should be on page 117.
Can any one give me some advice here?
    Thank you.

    People,
    I figured this one out.
There were two additional screws that had to be extracted. The documentation clearly showed this, but I did not see them because they, as several others, were neatly covered with plastic patches glued the screw position. It hides the screw and looks nice but it is difficult to figure out and harder to put back into place looking just as good after access.
While I was waiting for an answer, I figured it out. Thanks to anyone that read my message. No advice necessary. Problem solved. Thank you.

  • Idle Fan speed 4400 RPM after fan replacement

Several months ago the left side fan on my MBP died as the result of a worn bearing. The computer is covered under Apple Care so I sent it in to have the fan replaced. Ever since the fan was replaced the idle speed on both fans is in excess of 4K rpm even when the CPU shows minimal activity. SMC fan control is set to 2K rpm. iStat Nano widget displays temperature at 120 Degrees Fahrenheit and fan speed at 4500K. I took my MBP back to my local Apple authorized service center and told them what was occurring since having the fan replaced. From Hardin Apple service center in Arlington my MBP was shipped to Houston Texas where Apple Service Technicians replaced the Logic board. I have since reset the PMU by removing the battery and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. I have also run the Apple Hardware Diagnostic test using the install disc which showed no hardware malfunctions.
With the CPU 95% idle the fans should not be running anywhere near 4K. Despite two trips to Apple Service my MPB still has a fan probably which is not only annoying because of the increased noise but it is affecting my battery life as well. If anyone has any ideas as to how to fix this problem which I have not already attempted please post them. I am hesitant to send my MBP back for more service at this time due to their failure to fix the problem the first time or check the results. They were aware of the problem when I sent it in for service and when they returned it to me the same problem persisted. This type of service does not inspire customer confidence.

I'd be inclined to try an "archive and install" of the OS, Jason, and leave off any third party "add ons" like SMC fan control for the moment.
Alternatively if you have an external HD then you could try installing a "clean" copy of the OS on this and using it as the boot drive, to see if this overcomes the problem
There are OS software elements to the process of fanspeed control and if these are corrupted then the fans are likely to run at "failsafe" speed.
Another possibility may be that a temp sensor hasn't been properly re-connected, again resulting in "failsafe" sped operation.

  • Unable to order recovery cds for used Thinkpad T60p's

I picked up three thinkpad t60p units second hand from my university's surplus auction, but per their policy the hard drives were totally wiped (including all partitions). I have looked up the FRU part numbers (43T8618 & 46V2346) here and wish to purchase the cds & dvds as spare parts. I tried to enter the part numbers here but it said the part could not be found in the database. I then tried calling the phone number on that page (1-800-765-5944), but I kept on getting bumped around to different numbers. I DO NOT wish to pay for a tech support call, I just want to order the parts! In fact I can't call support at all since they require a serial number but I do not have a way to get this information. This is due to the fact that the bios have been password protected but I do not have the bios password (the surplus guys have no clue), the stickers on the bottom having seen better days (serial number is not legible on two and only partially legible on the last), and obviously there is no OS to boot into. The only information I have is the model number (8741-CTO) and the operating system that was on them prior to the wipe (two were xp professional and one was vista ultimate). Anyway, I'm not concerned about trying to get this covered under warranty, as I am prepared to pay for the parts, if only I could actually order them! Please, somebody from lenovo, how the heck do I order these parts?

Yes, I know all about the supervisor password situation. Unfortunately these were part of 1000+ notebooks the surplus depot was auctioning off in lots and the supervisor password situation seems to have be on departmental level and unique to only a small subset of those sold. This is a state institution and, as such, little details like passwords tend to fall through the cracks. Since they were auctioned off and are no longer university property, the records (such as who had them/serial numbers/etc) were removed from the auditing system. I'm not going to return them because I got them for a song. Thus, I am going to be spending the next couple of months using some of my spare time to track down the department they came from using the tried and true method of trial-and-error. In the mean time, I would like to have them operational and having the supervisor password is irrelevant for this, since the system tries to boot from the optical drive and then the hdd. You know, why can't they put the serial number and what not inside the battery bay where it is less likely to come into contact with foreign substances/greasy hands/sharp surfaces? But more importantly, why is it such a hassle to order these disks? I mean, I have had to order restore disks in the past from HP and it is easy as pie. I just place my order with the parts system online, no serial numbers, no calls to tech support, or any other nonsense needed. Seriously, it isn't like these will work on a non-Lenovo system since you still need a valid key/slic in the system's eeprom. The search continues, but I think I will go the e-bay route for the XP Pro disks. I still need the Vista Ultimate recovery disks, however.

All - I have an IMAC G5 and a Thinkpad T60P. I have my IMAC set up to share its internet connection with the wireless option on my Thinkpad. Is there any way to set up both computers so that I can access each other's files from the opposite computer.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, and I'll be sure to leave "good feedback" for any answers, even if they aren't what I'm hoping for!!

    Hello,
I just read your posting, and tried to apply to my home networking problems. I seem to be having some difficulty with my PC or perhaps my router though ...
From the remote desktop client, I got the error: The Mac cannot connect to the Windows based computer. The problem might be temporary. Try connecting again, or contact your administrator.
From the Finder/Go/Connect to server method, I received the error "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in smb://192.168.1.117 could not be read or written. (Error code -36)".
... any ideas what this problem might be?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff.
