Thinkpad T61 starts up slooooooow!

Hey
I bought a secondhand T61 a couple of weeks ago. Therefore I had a T60. I replaced the org. HDD by a OCZ Vertex 96Gb. I put the SSD in the 'new' T61, but it starts up quite a bit slower then my T60. I did everything you need to do to use a SSD properly (ACHI, windows indexing, TRIM,... etc.)
I did a BIOS update a few days ago, but it didn't really helped so much... Is it worth it/ worth the risk to update it to the Beta BIOS that enables SATA II speeds? (or are that just some "rumours"?)
Then I've got this too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtuVy-XwXYY
A friend of mine says it's the WIFI card making that "electric" sound, just because it's been used for years now. Replacing it would fix it he told me... I'll take it out for a second and check if the sound goes on. But if it does, what could it be otherwise?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Just to check, was the OCZ Vertex 96GB SSD wiped clean before being installed into the T61 and the operating system loaded onto it?

  • Thinkpad T61 kernel panics

I'm having some trouble with random kernel panics on a thinkpad T61. Sometimes they occur just after boot yet other times I can be using my laptop for hours with absolutely no problems before it decides to panic. I've attached a picture of the error message I get and the output of some commands I thought would be relevant.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but recently I've been getting random kernel panics on my t61 as well. I believe the root cause is the wireless card. I have an intel 4965 card just like you.

  • Booting thinkpad t61 without a keyboard

I'm having the following problem with my Thinkpad T61.
Every few minutes the computer starts behaving as if a few keys on the keyboard are pressed. The keys are no physically stuck, the system just behaves as if they are. This happens sometimes for no apparent reason, but I can always make it happen by pressing any kye on the bottom right side of the keyboard.
I've concluded that the keyboard is faulty and ordered a new one.
In the meanwhile, I'm trying to use my laptop with an external (USB) keyboard. This doesn't quite solve the problem, b/c the laptop still allows input from the internal keyboard, so it still messes up too frequently. I've tried disabling the keyboard, but the Device Manager doesn't seem to allow me to do that. I thought of physically removing the keyboard, but then I don't have a Power button!
Does anyone have an idea for me for how to use my laptop until the replacement keyboard arrives?
Is there a way to boot the computer without a keyboard connected?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

How about unhooking the keyboard cable and taping the end so it doesn't make contact with anything on the board and leave the keyboard on so you still have the power button.
    Dave

  • Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?

Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?  I've looked all over the Lenovo site, and I can only find the part number referenced, not a location to purchase it.
When I opened up my Thinkpad, on the fan, it said:
    Lenovo P/N 42W2461
    FRU P/N 42W2460
Has anyone here ever tried other merchants with success (eBay, etc.)?
(I'm out of warranty, and the fan gets noisy when hot, unlike when it was new, and I sometimes get "Fan Error" on bootup at the BIOS.)

    Hello,
According to this page on IBM's web site, you can call IBM Parts Help at +1 (877) 719-0841.
I believe this office is located in Boulder, Colorado, which means they will probably keep Mountain Time Zone [GMT-7] office hours.

  • What drivers do I need to reinstall different OS and where can I download them for ThinkPads T61?

I just accidentally purchased one ThinkPads T61 with Linux OS version.  I don't use Linux so I plan to wipe out Linux and install Windows XP Pro instead.  I have the Windows OS, but as I know I will need to install some drivers afterward to make the notebook work properly.
My question would be: How many and what drivers do I need to reinstall different OS and where can I download them?
    Thank you for your help!

  • Sporadic reboots of a Thinkpad T61

    Hello,
we have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 that reboots itself every few days without providing any information in the logs about the reason for this behaviour.
I ran the Lenovo pc-doctor and got a failed result for the nvidia gpu with the error code 7082. Could you please help me with the meaning of this error code? Is there a list where I can find out what this error code stands for?
    Best Regards,
    Matthias

reboot with no message might be overheating. cleaning the fan and replacing thermal paste is cheap and certainly won't hurt anything.

    Hello,
I have seen otherwise operational computers running Microsoft Windows Vista fail to boot when the mode for the SATA interface is changed.
Prior to booting into Microsoft Windows Vista on the ThinkPad T61, try entering the BIOS setup screen and toggling the SATA interface from AHCI to Legacy (or vice-versa), saving the settings and then booting up into Windows.  Does this make any difference?

  • Upgrade Thinkpad T61

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my Processor and Video card of my Thinkpad T61.
It’s a 7665, It got now a Intel Centrino 2,0GHz processor and a nVidea nvs 140ms video card. I would like to have a min of 2,5GHz and a 256mb onboard 3D (preferred 512mb) or can't you remove the parts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kyoshin

You can either upgrade your ram now or later it doesn't matter, but before you decide to jump on to the 64 bit bandwagon, please remember that some softwares don't have native 64 bit support in which case they won't work.
Also, if i am you then i would wait to next year to upgrade the OS, use the 32 bit Vista now, because Microsoft is abandonding their Vista OS (relatively speaking) and is going to release Windows 7 next year to lure people away from Win XP.  So don't waste any more money on Vista, and just wait for the new OS to come out.
But getting 2 x 2 gig of ram is not going to hurt you, because the price of PC 5300 SO DIMM ram has pretty much bottomed out, any price change is minor and mostly will be result of different currency exchange rate. In Australia Ram price actually went up due to Weak Australian Dollar against every major foreign currency.

  • Slot-in DVD for Thinkpad T61

(First of all sorry for my english. Hope you understand me)
I'm looking for a slot-in DVD drive for my Thinkpad T61.
I live in Hungary and I've found only two affordable options. Get a Samsung slim slot-in drive or a MacBook's SuperDrive (maybe Panasonic or LG). I still have my guarantee so if I buy one of them; can the service "fit in" to my Thinkpad? I mean, I have to buy a special "only for Thinkpad" DVD drive or one of these also good?

Well there are over 500 different slim-line and super-slimline DVD drives on the market, some of them with special firmware versions and some of those drives are build as slot-in drive versions. Even most of the sizes (12,7x129x128 mm) and connectors (JAE 50 pin) are to 98% equal, there still some differences and things to take into account.
The overall problem with a slot-in DVD drive will be to find a suitable front-panel for a Thinkpad T61:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=22775
As you can see, beside maybe some possible firmware version conflicts, the main common problem for you with a Thinkpad T61 will be, to find a suitable front-panel for a third-party slot-in slim-line drive here! - BTW, I have a Samsung slim-line slot-in drive, which I use as a secondary external USB/Firewire drive when I travel. The front-panel which is supplied with the Samsung slot-in drive will not adhoc fit for a Thinkpad T61!

Hi, how to use touch pad (thinkPad T61) to scroll pages up/down, left/right? do I need any drivers?

Hi daneeo, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
In the Control Panel for your Mouse there should be an UltraNav tab. Under that tab are all the settings for the touchpad. Check to make sure scrolling is enabled.
If you do not see an UltraNav tab in the Mouse Control Panel, download and install the UltraNav driver and utility:

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Build Quality

I have a T61, and since then has been crap since I bought the LCD cover, cracking when you press, but the service could not start with him. And this is normal? What can I do? What can I do then? I am writing from Hungary.
Best of all, it is also fitting to the site was dismantled, and the bottom of the machine does not fit properly, and the Lenovo We announce that the plane could not be any paper is slid into the machine and the screen behind it, but I know to do that.
I do not want to szidni Lenovo, very love this machine and the brand, yet also got T-shirt, but somehow it does not get what I expected.

Could you clarify exactly what you mean please. Did you replace the LCD cover, or have it replaced at some point?
It looks to me as though a wlan or bt cable hasn't been routed correctly and is causing the disformation on the cover. Normally I would suggest just to apply pressure and click it back into place, but if a cable has been misrouted during a component replacement, this would not be the correct advice.
