Thinkpad t61p fx 570

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a thinkpad t series.  I cant decide whether i want to get the t61p 14 inch or 15.4 inch, mainly because the 15.4 offfers the 256mb video card and the 14 inch offers the 128mb card.  I really want a good graphics card, but the size of the computer is also very important too.  Id prefer the 14inch but it unfortunately only offer the 128 card.  Is there a huge performance difference between the 128 card and the 256 card?  I dont intend to play games, but i do plan to dual screen but im not sure if the 128mb card will cut it.  I dont want it to lag at all when i dual screen.  Will the 128 card work fine when dual screening?

The only real performance difference you should see between a system with 128MB VRAM vs 256MB VRAM will be if/when you run out of graphics frame buffer - i.e. use all available video memory and your system starts using main system memory. I'm a bit out of the modern gaming scene, but more graphically intensive games at higher resolutions will likely benefit from that 256MB.
To your question on one screen with Counter Strike (CSource I presume?) and another playing a DVD, I would say that will be more CPU limited than anything else. Your graphics card is taxed mainly with 3D rendering only. If you're running a game while playing a DVD, your CPU will be the major bottleneck. My opinion is that you won't have performance issues, especially if you choose a higher clocked CPU, but having plenty of RAM and a fast hard drive will effect that as well. After all, your system can really only be as fast as it's slowest part.
Personally I would choose the system based on how it will be used in the majority. Will you be out & about most of the time, taking your system places and being mobile? In that case the 14.1 standard is the winner hands down. Now our 15.4" model is one of the thinnest & lightest 15.4's in the industry, and I personally carried a rather heavy 15.4" Z61m around college for a while, but I would choose form factor over a difference in video memory any day.

  • ThinkPad T61P (6460-D8G) - which SATA interface?

    Hello,
    I'd like to add a second hard disk to my ThinkPad T61P (model 6460-D8G). I came up with a couple of possibilities;
    1) Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 160gb  (model HTS723216L9A360)
     * this drive has an SATA 3GB/s interface !!!
    2) Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 160gb (model HTS722016K9SA00)
     * this has an SATA 1.5 GB/s interface, and is exactly the same model as the primary hard disk I already have.
These two disks are of the same physical size.
Now, I quess the most important question here is; does my ThinkPad support the #1 drive? In other words, does this computer have an SATA 3GB/s interface? This bit of information I haven't been able to find anywhere?!
If this ThinkPad model does NOT have SATA 3GB interface, will I still be able to connect a SATA 3GB drive to it, or should I just buy the slower SATA 1.5GB model?
Btw, does the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (model 40Y8725) also support SATA 3GB? If this computer supports SATA 3GB, can I connect the #1 drive to the adapter, or should I swap the disks so that the primary disk goes to bay adapter and the new drive replaces the primary disk inside the computer?
Sorry if my english is not very fluent, but could someone still try and help me out here, as I just can't seem to find the answers anywhere myself...

Ok, thank you for your reply, wjli2.
I quess that solves the problem then. I can use which ever of those two drives I can get first, but will not benefit from the faster interface in drive #1.
Too bad my retailer estimated I may have to wait for about 4 weeks to get my hands on one of those . I quess others have also found those two to be good drives.

  • Thinkpad T61p is incompatible to Windows 7 x64

Dear Lenovo Support, i never had that kind of crap with any other thinkpad i bought. Today i tried to update my Thinkpad T61p (6457-7XG) to Windows 7 x64 which is already long enough on the market to update all drivers from your site. Remember: It has a very long beta and RC phase. Long enough to check everything is working without extra work for the user.
    Things are crap:
1)Lack of Win7 drivers for the integrated sd-card reader.. The driver from the Homepage installs. Everything is ok in the Hardware Manager. If i plug in my card, nothing is happens. (my card is 100% ok). At this point i need to search and tryout to get this thing working.
2)Lack of working bluetooth software. The support homepage offers v6.1.0.5100 which is definitive not working with Windows 7 x64. At this point this is not an up to date driver because the newest software is 6.2.0.9600 and is working with windows 7. If i try to download it from broadcom the setup software cancels because lenovo devices are not supported. So i need to do a workaround by myself because you are not able to fix it by time.
3)If i plug out my ethernet cable the lenovo software tries to switch to wlan. sometimes it starts to hang and my mouse is moving by 1-2fps... same problem occurs if i deactivate my wireless device by default so it cannot switch. This bug is representable at any time. There is no possibility to save anything after it starts to hang. I need to press the power button until the system powers off.
I also never had some high frequent beep noise in hard disk access mode until i bought the T61p.
If i sum all things i am realy unhappy with this product. My warranty expires in 286 days and i will need a new notebook. So tell me a reason why i should by a new lenovo notebook which would be less supported with actual os versions? Will i have the same problems by updating a new lenovo product to windows 8?
I am also wondering now why i bought a expensive lenovo product if i could buy a product with the same quality for 1000$ cheaper.. so where is this money at? It is definitive not the same quality as ibm provided it with the old thinkpads up to T60. The Thinkpad T61p is not as old to stop the driver support for new os because a lot of people still using it with a extended warranty in a productive enviroment. In this case its better to use win 7 then vista.
    Thinkpad T61p (6457-7XG)

The company i work for got several T61 and T61p running Windows 7 x64 without any such issues. I'm not sure if you got a hardware problem or software problem, but you say that you tried to update to Windows 7. Does it mean you performed a upgrade from Vista or a clean install of Windows 7? I always suggest a clean install since i had several issues with OS upgrades in the past. So if you did a upgrade you might have some issues because of that. In that case i would suggest a clean install of Windows 7. If the problems are caused because of a OS upgrade you cannot blame Lenovo. This could be a problem for any computer whatever Brand. There is also some BIOS updates that contains some Windows 7 fixes, did you update your BIOS before the installation or did you check that you already had a pretty new BIOS version that is supposed to work fine with Windows 7?
This is not a general problem for all T61/T61p models so it got nothing to do with low quality of the Lenovo models. There is no way you can get a computer with similar quality/spec that cost $1000 less. In that case it's either not the same quality or not the same spec. Windows 7 is supported on T61/T61p and there are drivers available that work fine. I never did a upgrade to Windows 7 and always performed a clean install. I read that several others performed a upgrade without these kind of problems though.

  • [solved] Kernel panic (?) when closing lid or undocking thinkpad t61p

    Hello,
I have a thinkpad t61p connected to the advanced mini-dock. I also have an external monitor connected to the DVI port. When I press the "Eject request" button on the dock, the green led starts to blink and then stops blinking. After this the laptop is totally freezed, with sound looping over and over again from the speakers.
Worth noting is that I can undock with no problems from the console (no X server running). This seems to indicate that this is an issue with the nvidia drivers?
This seems also be the case with the laptop freezing when I close the lid while X is running.
    I'm running 2.6.30.6-1 kernel and nvidia 185.18.36-1.
Any ideas what's causing this? Should I report this to nvidia, lenovo or ... ?

I haven't got around to get that working yet. It's been a real pain with my previous systems so I've just learned to live without suspend/hibernate.
Thanks for the link. Nothing seems to be related to the T61 models though.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T61p EVDO

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p 6459-CTO and i didnt get EVDO (TELUS) built in with it, but i am wondering if it is a "extra" if I pay to get installed or something totally different? --

    Dude,
I was having the same problem. You can get it to work if you go into the TCP/IP properties for your wireless connection and hard code the IP, DNS, and WINS addresses instead of letting the computer automaticall resolve them. You can get them by logging into the Verizon modem via the hardwired computer. Once you do that it works great. Also, this on;y seems to happen with my Lenovo R61 computer. All of my other computers connect fine.

  • Photoshop CS4 brush cursor bug on Thinkpad T61p

I've got a Thinkpad T61p with a Nvidia Quadro FX 570M onboard (driver version: 6.14.11.7471). There seems to be a bug with the graphics driver in conjunction with the new Adobe Photoshop CS4. Photoshop now uses GPU-optimization with more brush capabilities. Unfortunately the cursor clips when using brush-sizes larger than 64px. One can see the bug on the nvidia cs4 promotion "brush resizing" at http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe_photoshop.html. Nvidia corrects this bug in newer driver versions, but lenovo only offers a WinXP-display-driver from 2008-04-28.
Does anyone know any workround? I've tested somo older forceware drivers (178.24) with partial success. The display bug in Photoshop is fixed, but e.g. After Effects CS4 crashes while detecting the GPU.
Message Edited by mikey on 10-23-2008 03:20 AM

Today I've installed the latest Forceware Drivers 180.60 from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to test the bug behaviour.
The brush cursor now seems to be able to handle big brush sizes but the performance is reduced noticable. When painting inside a new document the rendering of the brush path is done after painting over the area, even when using small brush sizes.
So let's wait until Nvidia/Lenovo roll out a new driver.

When installing VeriFace message appears on Lenovo ThinkPad T61p - is Designed only for Company Lenovo (http://www.eos.com.ua/eos/images/VeriFace.jpg). The Installation soft does not go. And that to do? Can someone has no packet installation EXE, but RAR or ZIP compiling. Can VeriFace is not intended for ThinkPad T61p?

Further if somebody there succeeded to use it correctly (?) on a T61p, he can probably give you some hints into the right directions.

  • Scratches on a screen of brand new ThinkPad T61p

    Hello
I've bought a brand new (factory sealed) ThinkPad T61p (warranty valid until 2011). I've found scratches on a screen. One is almost 2 inches long and has multiple tracks. There are also other smaller scratches in different areas. I didn't even tried to turn it on and enjoy a new great piece of hardware...
How this could be? Will Lenovo replace the LCD?
    Kind regards

I purchased it on a polish internet auction from a private seller who bought it in the USA.
So it looks as though the TP is third hand. Keep trying, I wish you luck, but I believe you need to address your complaint against the seller, not Lenovo.

  • SXDE on Thinkpad T61p

Am trying to install SXDE from official DVD on a Thinkpad T61p; however, the installation hangs when it comes to starting GUI. The graphics card on this machine in NVIDIA FX570. I'm not in mood of installing in text mode, so I tried to find some relevant information, but to no avail. So - does anyone has any experience with installing on alike machine, are there known problems with above card? Also, if someone successfully installed SXDE on T61p, I'd appreciate any hint on hardware support (I found Solaris driver for this card at NVIDIA site, but I'm wondering is wireless, that is Intel 4965, supported, than Bluetooth, etc.).
    Thanks.

  • Thinkpad T61p - Windows 10

Sussessfully installed Windows 10 Insider on my Thinkpad T61p - 6460-67u. Several items don't work in Device Manager and the T61p is NOT recognized on your site for support. Will there be drivers avaiable for this notebook after July 29th? Thanks.

    Hi RockyLane,
Most likely not.  Drivers are provided by the internal hardware manufacturers and if they don't support the hardware, then there will be no drivers for it.
As Windows 10 progresses through the various builds, MS has provided more drivers so windows update might come up with drivers for your machine.
With that said, there are some ways that you can get an older driver to install and give at least partial functionality.  You could disable driver signing and force install a driver from an older OS or install a driver in compatibility mode.
I have Windows 10 installed on an X200T and an X301 and was able to get some older drivers installed these ways.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • ThinkPad T61p idle GPU temperature

I have a very minimal Arch installation with Xfce and only a few daemons. Cpu usage is usally around 5-10%.
The thing is the GPU temperature idles around 60 degrees at WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution. It's an nVidia Quadro FX570M with nvidia driver installed and powermizer working. Is this normal? Is there any way I can decrease it?

That's odd. How about CPU temp? Mine is currently 39 (opera + mpd only), with intensive, but normal usage it never exceeds 50 (however I'm not talking about gaming or compiling, sure it gets hot then).
That's my current sensors output. I'm sitting in quite cold room right now, maybe that's what making few degrees of difference.
