Thinkpad Twist S230u: Clean Install - Windows 8 on Custom Partition

I want to install Windows 8 using my own partition configuration, meaning where I'd get a C and a D drive. On my other computers, this is what I have and I really like this configuration. I want to install Windows 8 on the C drive and have all my data on D. I have reformatted and partitioned the HDD to C and D. When I slot in Windows 8 Enterprise to install, I keep getting this message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." What the machine keeps wanting is for me to delete both partitions and create its own partitions and I don't want this. I know it wants this because I have clicked delete of the partitions and looked to see what it would do. It ended up creating several of its own partitions (not at all how I want it). When I re-partitioned the drive back to C and D (2 partition config), it would repeat that same error message.
Can someone please help tell me how do I install Windows 8 doing my own custom partition (C, D) where Win 8 is installed onto my choice of C and D is left for my data. Why does it keep saying, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one"? Is it a settings in BIOS that I need to change to enable me to use my own partition? If so, what setting? I have never had these issues installing Win 8 using the C & D partition config on 3 other computers (not Lenovo S230u Twist).
Thanks for your help!!! :-)

Hello LightspeedX!
I glad you wrote this issue cause i still having the same problem (and questions).
I decided to put everithing down on my s230u because it is quietly irritant see a last generation porcessor like the I7 on a top plataform ultrabook running so slowly like our thinkpad do.
Since the embed software and the poor resource planning is the resposable for that issue, i really cant imagine why Lenovo decide to bring all this things up together at this device. I realize that any cheap I3 china device is more confortable and "quickly" to run any software than this machine in his original state (factory defaults), so i decid to try a brand new and clean installation of windows 8 or (perhaps) a dual boot configuration using a linux frindly distro like ubuntu.
At my own risc, like the cusummer service like to say, i will erase all HD and start this "saga" (making a full hard copy first, of course and will soon bring any results i found here.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Install clean Windows 8

    Hello Together,
I got a new Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230u and want to install windows 8 without all preinstalled Software.
But i cannot find any Recovery Disc/Partition and there is no Registration Key for Windwos 8 in the Package....
So, how can I extract the clean Windwos 8 Image to take it on an USB Stick and how do i get the Windows 8 Key?
It used to be so easy....
    Thanks for your Help!

    Hi bigwig,
I'm not quite sure what you want to do, but if you are looking to do a clean install without the Lenovo pre-installed software, you are headed down the wrong path.
Here's how you make a copy of the recovery image to USB flash drive.  That can be used to restore your Twist to factory state.  Factory state includes the pre-installed software too.  There isn't a "naked" Win 8 image anywhere on the machine, as far as I know.  Only the full  Wind 8 + Lenovo recovery image.

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u and ThinkPad x201 Tablet Creating Recovery Media

    Hi Lenovo Customer Support,
    ThinkPad s230u( model number: 3347CTO) - Window 8 Pro.
Before I start using my Laptop, I want to create a Recovery Media as is shown when installed with all partitions. Meaning if I format all contents of Laptop I want a recovery Media brings back computer as I go it in the first place include all partitions. By default there are five hidden partition and one ntfs.
What is the procedure how to Create a Recovery Media? I heard only Flash Recovery exist for Window 8.
Also I have Window 8 Pro but when I tried this link procedure http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Create-Win-8-recovery-media-in-ThinkPad-Thi... I saw only Window 8 option and even then it reboot and did not work.
Also I did Flash Recovery and Took Faster with USB 3.0 Flash around 10 min around 16GB Space
Is it possible to do CD Recovery too ?
    ThinkPad x201 Tablet(Model Number: 30933PG) - Wundow 7 Pro
Can you do Flash Recovery Media and CD Recovery Media under Window 7 Pro  Enviro.
If you upgrade Hard drive to 1T and RAM to 16 G RAM  , Can you Still do the Recovery Media?
What is the Procedure to successfully create Recovery Media.
    Thanks.
    saad

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • Some issues after clean installing windows 7 pro 64bit

    Hi,
I have a couple of issues, I clean installed windows 7 pro, 64bit, (vanilla) restored my license with ABR and used system update to download all the drivers. (no issues until here) But after restarting the system, I found this issues:
    1. I have to put the bios in legacy mode for system to boot. Otherwise it gives me a "no operating system found" message. Is there any way to make a proper installation for the system to boot in UEFI and LEGACY?
    2. System update didn't install thinkvantage center. (the program that stays in the taskbar). Should this be installed manually? Or system update should have installed it?
3*. I can not use lenovo driver page of my x120e. In IE it shows me repeatedly the wizard to choose my model, although I enter the correct info there. It starts all over again and again. Tried opera, I can see the drivers page, but I can't browse, or expand none of the sections. (all I can think of this, do I need java for the page to work?)
3*. UPDATE: After installing IE 9, java and flash player, still not working. Opera too. Google Chrome works fine.           What's the matter with IE and OPERA? What component do I need to make IE work with lenovo drivers download page?
Can anyone help me? Never had to deal with these issues.
    Thanks in advance

Who helped you today? Do not forget to thank him.
My hardware: TP x120e 0596-2ru. Windows 7, sp1, 64Bit, English, installed in UEFI mode.

    Hello,
Have you tried wiping the hard disk drive and reinstalling Windows 7 Professional x64 from the factory recovery discs while the BIOS is set to UEFI?  If so, did that work?

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u cursor flashing

    Hello,
I own a thinkpad twist s230u (3347 4HU) purchased 3 weeks ago. From the moment I turned it on, it has a major issue. The cursor goes on the right side of the screen, it flashes and it opens windows and applications itself whether it runs on desktop or on tablet mode. The problem appears every time I use the laptop and I can’t do anything. I can’t  write text anywhere due to the cursor flashing. Also most of the times that cursor flashes, the screen jitters too! I updated the bios system to 1.57 version so as most of the rest software including Atmel touch controller firmware update tool, Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, Auto Scroll Utility and many others. I also ran linux ubuntu from a usb flash memory but the problem still existed. So it is not a windows 8 or a driver failure. I noticed that few times when i  turn around the screen or I change screen’s angle, then the problem temporarily subsides for less than a minute. I am very disappointed and frustrated. I never expected to buy a Lenovo product with such a problem.
    Could anyone help me?
    Solved!

I have the same issue, on a brand new Twist.  So this is not some isolated occurrence.  It's a serious problem.  Could someone from Lenovo please respond regarding a fix or plans to address this?

  • Thinkpad W530 : How to install Windows 8 Professional over preinstalled Windows 8???

Hi, please help me, I'm spending way too much time on an issue that should take me 1 hour max...
When I try to clean install Windows 8 Professional from a dvd or a a usb key, my laptop silently retrieves the preinstalled Windows 8 key product instead of asking me the product key. I can't find a way to enter my 'Professional' product key, I always end up with a basic Windows 8 installation.
Please don't refer me to this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/Installing-Full-Retail-Win-8-Pro-on-a-Lenovo-System-supplied/t...
In my case the installation doesn't fail, it just silently retrieves the basic Windows 8 product key from the bios or whatever.
I also tried to upgrade from within Windows 8 by starting my Windows 8 Professional dvd during a session, but once again, it never asked me for any product key and nothing changed, I still ended up with the basic Windows 8 at the end of the process.
Or is there a way to flash the preinstalled OS license?
    Thanks,
    Frank
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Oook, got it. Here is my method (largely inspired by other threads..):
    1. Prepare a bootable Windows 8 Professional installation USB key: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2227-create-bootable-usb-dvd-windows-8-iso.html
The link for the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool is: http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe
    2. You have to create two files and manually add them in the folder named « sources » on the USB key. Create both files with notepad.
First file is « El.cfg », you have to modify the « .txt » extension of the notepad file to « .cfg ». It contains the following text:
    [EditionID]
    Professional
    [Channel]
    OEM
    [VL]
    1
Second file is PID.txt, it contains the following text where xxxxx-.... is your product key:
    [PID]
    Value=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
    (Step 2 is inspired by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2796988 and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824952.aspx and http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/Upgrade-Windows-8-Retail-to-Windows-8-Pro-VL/td-p/1086823 )
    3. Boot from the USB key!

  • Thinkpad Twist S230U Hard Drive (500GB) completely Dead - How do i recover/Re-install windows 8?

The main hard drive on my Twist died after only a little more than a year, just a few months after the warranty expired (of course).  i have installed a new drive, but is there any way to recover/re-install windows 8.1 without buying the recovery disks from Lenovo for $45?
is it possible there is a back up on the 24GB SSD?

Microsoft has a new online tool for this. I don't know for sure if the ISO/USB drive it creates is compatible with the license in BIOS since I haven't tried it yet.
Give it a try and let us know.

  • Thinkpad Twist s230u: Can no Longer Connect to the Internet

    Hello,
Several days ago my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I was at the cafe using my phone hotspot and everything was fine, but then when I got back home, it could not detect any wireless networks in my house. I thought it may have just been my wi-fi but my phone could connect to the wi-fi just fine. I tried plugging in my phone again for personal hotpot and it could detect my phone, but no longer connect to the internet (it'd say that it's connected, but no pages would load). I tried rebooting my computer, but the wireless networks still could not be found and my phone's hotspot could no longer help it connect to the internet. I tried a Malwarebytes Scan but that didn't detect anything, and my McAfee virus scanner is not gonna help me find anymore viruses (long story as to why I don't have a better virus protection).
Can't really install any updates since I can't connect to the internet at all...rebooted several times to no avail...
Any sort of help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
    Sincerely,
    Ingrid

I just started to have similar problem. I cannot connect to interent via ethernet or wifi. Both connections show I am connected, but cannot acces any web pages. It is like it is not connected. I would like to know how to restore back to when I bought it, 12/20/13, and then re-load the Windows 8 pro that is somewhere on the partition HD. Any help out there?????? All my other devices/laptops/computers work fine on the internet.

  • Clean install Windows 8.1 Lenovo TPT 2

I have a thinkpad tablet 2 that crashed when updating to 8.0 to 8.1. I don't have a recovery key. I'm attempting to load windows 8.1 enterprise 32bit onto the tablet I've got it loaded on via a bootable USB key. However after booting to windows 8.1 the touch screen does not work and I'm forced to use the keyboard/mouse via a usb hub I've loaded all drivers from the lenovo site also and still many devices show up in device manager as "unknown device"
Can anyone help me with this? Am I doing something wrong or is there a driver that needs to be updated for touch screen functionality? Is there a procedure that can be used to do a stock restore from windows 8.1 enterprise recovery media?

Did you ever get all to work???? We have the same issue you do....Nothing works with a stock Windows 8 or 8.1 install...No WIFI or BT or Touch and a lot other stuff bunked up...The IO drivers crash before they finish install and turn off the back light...The leveno tablet 2 is a frienkistien of off brand hardware I think....But if you could walk us through how you fixed your issue of a clean install we will post it for all to see...With pictures

  • Fix for slow-as-hell refurb ThinkPad Twist S230u

I recently got a refurbished ThinkPad Twist, and I was having issues with lagging - everything was taking forever, both web-based and local. Kept monitoring performance and nothing seemed amiss with memory or processing, nothing wrong with my internet connection. After a little digging I found that using Lenovo Solution Center solved my problem - it prompted me to update the BIOS, there was some kind of update related to power management, and there were some Windows patches. As soon as I did that everything was running as smooth as silk. Seems a little shady the refurb people wouldn't have done those updates since they came out before I got the laptop, but whatever, just glad I got it solved. I thought I was going to have to try a factory reset but no!
I just wanted to share here since I spent a ridiculous amount of time winding my way through the labyrinthine Lenovo website, when all I had to do was go to Start and type "update." So if, like me, you're pissed off that your brand-new-to-you machine is faulty, do yourself a favor and try that first and see where it gets you.
You can also do a hardware scan through Lenovo Solution Center - which it seems like if you just got a refurbished machine and the hardware scan didn't come out clean that would be a tip-off that they didn't do their due diligence in testing it.

Thank you.  I bought my Twist brand new and it has always run slowly until now thanks to your post.  I really appreciate it.

  • G505 How to do a Clean Install Windows 8.1 Core instead of Windows 8.0 Core?

    Hi,
I have G505 with Widows 8.0 core installed. I would like to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 core. So I installed but it ask for the activation key which I do not have. I thought we can use the same activation key for Windows 8.1 core. How do you activate it if it is possible.
Or do I have to install Windows 8.0 core and then upgrade to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Windows 8.0 core.
    Thanks for any help.

    hi magi44ken,
This might be because the WInodws 8.1 installer you used is a retail version and not an OEM from Lenovo.
The path should be Windows 8.0 then upgrade it. this way the Key inside the BIOS will be recognized and reactivated.
Try Doing a Onekey Recovery and see if the Recovery Partition is still active to revert the system back to Windows 8.0. Turn off the computer and hit the Movo button , see if recovery will be available.
If not, you will need to call Lenovo Technical Support to Obtain a copy of the Windows 8.0 install, (fees may apply).

  • Booklet: clean install Windows 7 Starter on Kingst...

I bought a Kingston SSDNow V+180 SVP180S2/64G 64GB to replace the original HDD.
I had a lot of trouble cloning the drive (or actual the restore operation). Both restoring the Windows partition and the System partition failed.
I decide to start from scratch and just execute a clean install of Windows 7 Starter.
The advantage of this way is you only need a 4 Gb USB  Flash Drive and no other hardware (besides the new 1.8 SSD...) This guide is also very useful when the original HDD is broken (and no system restore is available).
Ingredients (where to obtain is explained below):
    - 1.8" SSD
    - USB Flash Drive (minimum) 4Gb
    - Windows 7 key of Booklet
    - Windows 7 ISO file (x86 version)
    - Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool
    - Nokia Booklet Drivers
The Windows 7 key of the booklet can be found behind the battery. Just remove the battery pack and there is the original Microsoft Windows 7 product key.
As the Nokia Booklet doesn't have a DVD-ROM and it's not supplied with the Windows 7 DVD, you can download the Windows 7 ISO file from here (make sure it’s the x86 version):
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65804/X15-65804.iso
I got this information from here:  http://mrintech.com/download-iso-file-create-dvd-activate-windows-7-x86-and-x64-with-genuine-product...
I also executed the "Remove Edition Configuration (EI.cfg) File from Windows 7 ISO", but wait until proceeding; I will come back to that...
Also download the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool from here:
http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe (When the link is broken, just use Google).
Please note: nothing illegal is going on downloading this software!
Install and execute the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool.
When asked, select the ISO as source and the USB Flash Drive as target.
The tool formats the USB Flash Drive and the files are copied to it as well.
(I executed this on a Windows 7 machine, but I don't expect differences when executed on a XP machine).
When the tool is ready do the following.
Search on the USB Flash Drive for the file "ei.cfg"
I used the tool to remove this file from the ISO, but it was back on the Flash Drive .
You will have to remove it otherwise Windows 7 Home is installed (result: you can't use the original Booklet key).
How to replace the HDD for the SSD can be found over here:
    http://pc-level.com/2011/07/how-to-disassemble-nokia-booklet-3g/
Plug the USB Flash Drive into the Nokia Booklet and power the Booklet up.
Hit the F12 button and select the USB Flash Drive to boot from.
When asked, select Windows 7 Starter to install.
The installation takes a while, but in the end you will see the Windows 7 desktop and are almost ready.
It's very important to disable TRIM and you will see a an excellent performance increase when you execute the following:
Open the command prompt (for example):
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
    type:
    fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1
To check whether TRIM is disabled execute:
    fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
    The result should be: 1
Reboot the booklet, just to be sure.
Install the drivers from Nokia: http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/booklet-3g/software
    Execute a Windows Update.
The Windows Experience Index shows me 5.9 with the SSD.

Don't worry Reserter, your English is ok
Concerning your problem two things come to mind:
    - did you disable TRIM? It's very important to disable this option because the chipset can't handle TRIM. After I disabled TRIM a serious improvement was noticeable.
    - the reason of the clean install initially was because I wanted a SSD (solid state drive) instead of a HDD (hard disk drive). The factory installed HDD is slow and a SSD drive improves performance of the Nokia Booklet dramatically.
I would consider to buy a 1.8" SSD... The booklet starts up in an acceptable time and is really useful as a netbook now. (buy an enclosure for the original HDD and you have external storage as well).

  • 15-f010wm unable to clean install Windows 8.1 on Crucial M500 SSD

    I have a new 15-f010wm laptop I got from walmart's black friday deal.   I have a 240GB crucial M500 ssd I have already installed.
The problem is Windows 8.1 setup will not see the drive.   Windows 7 sees it just fine.
    What I've tried:
    - updated firmware on SSD
    - upgraded laptop BIOS to latest from f.03 to f.12
    - enable "legacy" mode in bios
    - enable / disable xHCI support
    - tried to load AHCI driver from HP's website (This is the storage driver from the driver page for this laptop)
    - format GPT
    - format NTFS
    - Remove all partitions and volumes with diskpart
    - Tried to upgrade windows 7 clean install to Windows 8.1 via DVD.  Upon reboot setup fails to see drive, reboots into Winows 7
I simply cannot get Windows 8.1 setup to see this drive no matter what I try.   Again,  Windows 7 sees it just fine... in fact, I am creating this thread on the laptop in question with Windows 7 installed on the SSD in question.  The hardware is working fine.

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - Prevents ThinkPad Twist (S230) from booting (Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit)

Hi, I upgraded to Win 8.1 tonight and found the ThinkPad Twist wouldn't boot at all when the USB 3 dock was plugged in. When it tried to reboot I just get a permanent blank screen. When I power down and do a cold boot, I get the ThinkPad welcome screen but no boot options line prompt below it and it gets stuck on the ThinkPad logo. The only way I can get it to boot is to unplug the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock USB cable from the machine then dreboot from cold again. It's a bit annoying and definitely didn't behave like this under Win 8.0 RTM just a few hours ago.
I also found the dock-attached external displays wouldn't work under Win 8.1, but updating the Dock firmware and the  DisplayPort firmware as mentioned in another discussion board fixed that prob at least.  But I still can't boot or reboot with the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock attached...  Help would be appreciated.
    TIA...
    Paul
p.s. my ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock is Model DU99019, ASM PN OA34193
    Solved!

Thanks for the help. None of that fixed the problem, so I've run the tool and sent the results to DisplayLink support as you asked, with a link back to this thread. For your reference I have a Lenovo Service Request Number: 8001961163 on this problem. ( I mention this so we don't duplicate efforts).
Here's part of what I said to DisplayLink Support:
"I have all the latest drivers and updated the UEFI from Lenovo a couple of weeks ago. I restored a Windows 8.0 clone to see if the problem was present at that level, but I had the same problem, so I put Win 8.1 back. It used to work fine up until a week ago when I updated to Win 8.1, but as I said, I regressed to a Win 8.0 image and it persists there now, too.
The problem is when I restart Windows with the Dock connected, it’ll shut down normally then not reboot – it gets stuck on the Lenovo screen that asks to press Enter for the UEFI config. Same happens if I cold-boot it from power-off. Unplugging the USB3 cable and cold booting is the only way to get the PC going again.
Files attached show screen  shots of my troubleshooting progress. There was originally a “Mirage Driver” that the compatibility reporter was complaining about, so I removed that but still had the same problem after rebooting.
Personally, I think it’s a hardware or UEFI problem, as the problem happens before anything of Windows gets loaded at boot time."
    Best regards,
    Paul
