Thinkpad W500 4058 Freezes during post

I have a Thinkpad W500 type 4058 that freezes on the Thinkpad post screen during startup. It stays frozen indefinitely no matter what I do. I have tried pressing F1 F2 F9 F12 Delete and the Thinkvantage button on startup with no results. I have also tried starting it up plugged into the wall with no battery inserted and I even tried resetting it by removing the CMOS battery, the main battery and pressing the power button. I would just send it in for repairs but this problem started 3 days after my warranty ran out. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ihad the same problem just crop up. I was driving cross country this last weekend with my son - Idaho to Virginia - and we were using my W500 with a Garmin GPS18 gps device and MS Streets & Trips for navigation. The 2nd day the machine wouldn't boot. We had been abusing the W500 a lot.
I just checked the USB ports after reading this thread and, sure enough, one of the 3 USB ports on the left side is DESTROYED! The pinds were crushed and touching. As soon as I seperated the pins it booted right up!
I agree - check your USB ports to make sure they are not compromised.

    hey amw,
could you try uninstalling the Ericsson driver first, restart your unit and then reinstall. see if that works.
curious to know, when the Ericsson card was working; was your unit running on Win 7 Pro ?

  • New x4100M2 freezes during post

We have a brand new x4100M2 which has been giving us a few problems.
Initially the server would not power on although ILOM was accessible. This turned out to be a problem with the tamper switch on the server which doesn't seem to work correctly until we press on the server lid. Although annoying, we can live with this.
Later, while configuring and patching the pre-installed OS, the server would occasionally freeze before the OS would start booting. The diagnostic code at the bottom right stopped at 0060 and we would have to power off the server at this point. When powered on, everything would be OK again.
Finally, late last week, the server started freezing during boot with the same 0060 diagnostic code. This time powering off or even disconnecting the power cords made no difference, the server always froze after the memory check (which seemed to be counting very slowly) with the 0060 diagnostic code.
This week I powered up the server to give Sun a call and found that it is booting with no problems at all.
This server is going to an offsite hosting facility and I don't want to encounter these kinds of problems at that point.
Anybody run into similar problems or have any idea what could be going on?
Obviously my next step is to call Sun but I would like to check the obvious things before getting on the phone with them.
Thanks for any light you can shed.

    what's the BIOS version?

  • W500 periodically freezes during games and videos.

My w500 laptop has been owned since summer of 09. This past fall, my laptop started to freeze in the middle of games and videos, and then speed up to the point where the video or game was suppose to be (ex. Video starts at 0:05, freezes at 0:06, 3 seconds pass and the video jumps to 0:09 in the video). It has been persistent and I sent it for repairs and reimages. I thought it was due to the graphics card and got a new one under a warranty, but the problem still occurs today. Is it a harddrive issue or is there a file I can download to resolve this? Any help would be great.

Yeah the drivers are updated, I'll try the solutions above and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions really appreciate it
Edit: Here's the screenshots. I don't really know what this means can someone interpret please?

  • Problem with P45 Platinum during POST

    Good day!
I have MSI P45 Platinum mainboard and from to time to time it freezes during POST with AMI bios POST code - 423C. This happens right after the message that "4096MB OK" and before the detection of SATA/IDE drives.  When this happens, the only way to make the system run is to turn off the power (pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del of Reset would result in the same error)  - after that the POST procedure finishes correctly and I don't experience any problems afterwards (system is rock-solid after POST completion).
So my question is - can anyone explain me what does this post code mean (D-Leds are not much of a help)? Is this a mobo problem or may be there is some kind of incompatibility with my hardware. I should mention also that I've tried all versions of Bios both official and beta without any success.
This problem does not trouble me that much (doesn't happen often), but still I would like to understand what may cause it.
    P.S. My system config - iC2D E8300/MSI P45 Platinum/4x1Gb DDR2-800 Geil Black Dragon (5-5-5-15)/MSI Radeon 4870 1Gb OC edition/HDD 250 Gb WD + 120Gb Seagate/SB Audigy 4/DVD-RW Asus 1814/PSU TT Toughpower 700w (w0105)
Thanx in advance and please excuse my poor English

    Thank you for the reply!

What is your current BIOS Version?
I've recently flashed the latest beta bios version - 1,5 beta 6... but it produces the same error as did the latest official bios v1.4

Does the same problem occur with only one memory module installed?
I don't know actually. But thanks for pointing this out  - I will test the system with one (and then with two) module(s). I've tested the modules with the memtest86+ software (the latest version, which supports P45 chipset) several times and it showed no errors. So the modules are OK and they worked without any problems with my previous mb (Gigabyte P35-DS3).

What do the POST-Status LEDs of the board tell you, when the system freezes at the described stage?
Well, I guess I don't fully understand what does the combination of LEDs tell during the freeze. I'll try to describe the combination -
    LED12 - OFF           LED13 - GREEN
    LED8 - RED             LED7 - OFF
    LED14 - OFF           LED10 - GREEN
    LED15 - RED           LED11 - OFF
In mobo's manual this diagnostic LEDs are grouped in 4 groups and the description of the group that most closely resembles my case is - "Testing base and Extended memory etc." But I'm not sure that I'm identifying the problem correctly, because of the LEDs that are OFF.
    Quote from: Jack the Newbie
Are you experiencing any freeze and/or stability problems appart from the described problem?
No, as I said in my initial post, once it get past this stage everything is running smoothly - OS boots and all software, including the most demanding games or tests, are running OK.

  • P7N Platinum Problems - Freezing During OS Install / During POST / Checksum Err

During boot, I hear a series of musical beeps when the MSI logo is being displayed.  After booting off the CD to install Windows XP Home - it freezes at the same point "Checking for other version of Windows."
However, upon rebooting, I get a random series of errors as explained below:
Sometimes I get no POST / no signal to monitor
Sometimes I get a bad CMOS Checksum error
Sometimes during POST it freezes and I get multicolored blocks all over the screen
Sometimes it boots but freezes when displaying the message "Press any key to boot"
Sometimes it freezes on POST halfway through
*These all occur without changing any settings, or physically touching anything other than the power or reset buttons*
Basically it freezes at random times, but it's gotten as far as the windows install program but when it does, can never get past the 'checking for other versions of windows'
When booting from the existing version of windows on the drive, will freeze when loading mup.sys
Previous OS loaded on an older Intel D946GZIS mobo.
    Im using a Thermaltake TR-2 470W PSU
Processor is an Intel E6420 Core 2 Duo
Vid Card is an NVidia GeForce 9800GT
    One SATA HDD (WD2500KS)
    One SATA Optical Drive
I've tried using only one stick of RAM (Corsair VS1GB667D2 PC-5300) or two sticks of RAM in DIMM's 1, or 1 and 3 respectively with similar results.

Really appreciate all the help guys.  Thanks for all the replies.  Took me some time to read through all of them, but I think I've just about finished.
Anyways, I after moving the RAM stick modules into positions explicitly opposite of what the installation manual suggested (manual suggested in DIMM1 first, or if two sticks, DIMM1 and 3 ) it booted up and went into Windows.
After getting BSOD's, I reinstalled Win XP again.  I installed the drivers as per the accompanying MSI Drivers CD, and rebooted.
BSOD on WinXP load, except in safe mode.  I did a system restore prior to the install of the drivers, and it worked again.
Dunno what to say, but from previous comments on other forums, I know I'm not out of the water yet.  Still have to burn in this mobo for a few months before I'm not worried about it - seems 'buggy' from the get go.

  • Time Machine Freezes During Initial Backup

I have a 500gb external Western Digital HDD I am trying to use as my Time Machine backup drive. The computer I'm using is a 24" iMac with about 250gb of data on it. The external drive is partitioned as a GUID / Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
When I try to run the initial backup, it will randomly freeze during the process. Sometimes it gets halfway through the backup and freezes, other times, right away. Sometimes there is an error, other times there isn't.
I have tried re-partitioning the drive many times, manually starting the backup and also letting the backup start on its own. All of my applications are closed when the backup begins, but no matter what I do, I cannot get the initial backup process to complete.
Ironically, I had the same problem on ANOTHER iMac of mine, with the same model Western Digital drive. The backup would freeze randomly during the initial process but I would keep manually re-starting the backup until it magically finished the backup. Now that computer seems to be working fine.
However, I still can't get this other iMac to work. I find it strange that two separate computers with two separate 500gb Western Digital drives would have the same problem with Time Machine, unless the problem is with Time Machine itself.
Any ideas out there how to resolve this?

Why do you assume it's TM, not WD?
    There are many possibilities.
Did you completely erase the drive before formatting it? Sometimes the utilities, etc., that come on new drives can interfere with TM.
Is your iMac an Intel? If it's an older PPC, you need the Apple Partition Map, not GUID.
Is this USB or FireWire? USB is often much slower and less reliable.
If it's USB, does it have it's own power, or does it draw from your Mac? Often there's just barely enough to run a drive; if you have another USB peripheral, it can take enough power to interfere with the disk.
Does it have an automatic "spin down" feature? If so, can you disable it?
Does it have the latest updates? I thing I saw a post here recently that a WD update fixed, but I can't find it now.
Are you running any anti-virus scanning? If so, exclude your TM drive from it.
Sometimes excluding it from Spotlight as well, at least during a large initial backup, can prevent conflicts between TM and Spotlight.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Reinstalling freezes during "Preparing for Installation..."

    Hi,
I'm using an Apple MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard).
I have installed Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium and Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium.
As written in my other post (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650516?tstart=0), I am unable to find a solution to reinstall my Adobe printer driver.
That's why I thought I might be able to just reinstall Acrobat 9 Pro completely.
However, when trying this, the installation freezes during the "Preparing for Installation..." screen.
I also tried installing in Safe Mode but without success.
I found some posts regarding this but mostly the solution is to uninstall CS4 completely and to reinstall it again from scratch. But of course I would like to fix the problem without the need to reinstall everything.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Wolfgang

    Hi Larry,
    thanks for your message!
I found that out later as well, see http://forums.adobe.com/message/2857742#2857742 .
However, the problem I tried to describe in this post, is that I cannot reinstall Acrobat as it just freezes during the Installation.
Do you know any work-around for that?
    Thanks,
    Wolfgang

  • HT201210 iPhone freezing during restore.....

My iPhone 4 keeps freezing about 60% way through a restore, according to iTunes when the firmware is being updated. Any ideas how to fix? I have tried a different computer, disabling my security software etc. and still no luck :o( (Windows)

I was doing exactly what you suggested for hours prior to posting my question. I tried restoring, I tried restore/update over and over and it would always freeze between 25-75% through. I restarted my laptop 20 times, uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 4 times. Finally, today I was so frustrated that when I saw it freeze up one more time, I just pulled the power cord out of my laptop and walked away. An hour later I booted back up and set it to restore before I left the room and ....magic, it finally worked. Whether the unplug event had any real connection, I don't know.
If anyone does freeze during an update and has the "connect to itunes screen with the red itunes logo" stuck on their iphone screen, modular 747 is correct. Just keep trying the restore/update through itunes, but be prepared to do it non-stop for almost 72 hours like I did.

  • MDD DP G4 elusive diagnosis - freezes during boot up.  Tired- HELP!

After not using my Dual Bootable  DP 1.25 GHz MDD G4 for a couple of months, it's now freezing during the boot process.
What's weird is that it boots in Target Mode just fine, and when connected in this mode to my G5 Quad, it actually boots the G5 Quad in Target Mode just fine!    The G4 drive shows in fact as the boot drive on the G5 Quad's monitors.
I was able to boot off a retail Tiger 10.4.6 disk, so I did an erase and install of a fresh Tiger OS 10.4.6, which I promptly updated to 10.4.11.  After trying and failing umpteen times to boot off the HD, even in safe mode, I ended up being utterly unable to get either of the Super Drives to open normally, so I had to resort to the straightened paper clip trick to retrieve the install DVD.
Now even the paper clip fails to open either of the optical drives.
I have twice wiped the HD from the G5 Quad after booting up in Target Mode, and installed fresh copies of Tiger 10.4.11 as described, with the Tiger install DVD in the SuperDrive of the G5 Quad.
Since in Target Mode the G5 Quad boots just fine of the G4 HD, I think I can rule out the Hard Drive.
I think I can rule out the battery too, as it boots fine in Target Mode and in the regular boot process it sometimes gets as far as playing the OS fresh install music after going through the registration process.
I do have the original install disks with AHT 2.0.2 that came with the G4, but I can't get the optical drives open to insert the disk in either one of them.
I'm thinking it could be bad RAM, but why would the optical drives be stuck, both of them??!
I'd be most grateful for any tips as to what to try next.

Jump all hard drives Cable Select and place the intended Master on the end connector of each IDE ribbon (each bus).
Can you clarify, please?  Are you referencing the actual CPU?
Yes. A very fine layer of corrosion on one or more of the 300 pins could render the machine incapable of achieving logic.
The step should be performed after doing all the other reseats that I suggested.
    I've never re-seated one,
    Not so difficult.
Replacement of the thermal compound is a requisite part of the proceedure, however.
    Use Arctic Cooling MX-4.
No worries if a bit too much is applied, unlike silver based compounds....... bzzzZZTT! Dead CPU.
    My tutorial:
    9AE7FE0E-0CF2-4A7C-8003-489B282582BC.html
I posted this for someone who wanted to remove a MDD logic board (edited for clarity, I hope):
To remove the logic board (of a MDD):
-Disconnect all cables connected to the logic board.
-Remove any PCI cards, and RAM.
-Find and remove the five screws that hold the heatsink. Remove the heatsink.
-Remove the processor board by lifting the edges of the daughter card. After successfully pulling the card free from the connector, it might help to slide the processor board a bit to the rear and/while lifting out, being careful to clear the two mounting pegs.
-Find and remove the one screw that holds the logic board.
-Slide the logic board away from the back panel, lifting to avoid the chassis hooks.
You need to pay attention to the three steps in bold. There is no screw retaining the CPU daughter card. It is sandwiched between the heatsink and the logic board socket.

  • Freezes during "starting windows" message even after factory reset.

I've gone through diagnostic tests and they've shown it wasn't a hardware error. After a failed update to windows 10 my computer rolled back to windows 7. After the rollback when attempting to boot win 7 It froze and hung on the starting windows screen.  At first i was able to boot in safe mode and navigate the desktop and drivers, but after plenty of failed fixes i had to result to a factory reset with alienrespawn. After the factory reset the issue still persists, and i can no longer boot up in safe mode. When i do, it tries to do first time installation and says that i has to reboot in normal mode to complete first time config. My computer didn't come with a disk so i can't re-install windows 7, and factory reset dosen't seem to fix the issue. All I need is to resolve this issue so i can get back with a clean slate to upgrade to windows 10. Any ideas?
