Thinkpad W510 and W530 accessories compatibility
Hello all,
From a previous post, I found that accessories such as the power adapter and docking station will not work between the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and W540 models. Instead, are they compatible between a W510 and W530 and if not, how about a W510 and W520?
Solved!
Go to Solution.
No. W530 and W520 use the same docks and AC adapters; W510 uses different ones. All 3 have the same shape of battery, but the W530 needs one with an additional chip. A W530 battery will work in any of them. Nothing fits a W540. The only difference in the dock on the T510 (vs. T520, T530) is the AC jack is keyed for the 170W adapter.

Thinkpad W510 and W540 accessories compatibility
Hello all,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and I am looking to upgrade to a W540. For my current W510 I have a docking station and two power adapters. Will they all still work on a W540?
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello.
No, neither the dock nor the power supplies will work. The xx40 series of ThinkPads use the new rectangle tip power jacks instead of the barrel shaped ones, thus requiring new models of both.
Cheers!

Upgrade ThinkPad W510 to Win 10
I want to try to update a 5 year old ThinkPad W510, which I have not really been using much, from Win 7 to Win 10. I don't yet see it in the compatability list yet so I am not sure whether it will be viable although hardware-wise it meets the Win 10 specs. I looked at the recommendations for upgrading from Win 7 to Windows 8 and I will attempt to follow those as a first step. 1) It recommended updating the BIOS as there was a BIOS change relating to Windows 8. I have done that.2) I will remove a lot of unused software. Those that I want to retain might need to be updated and I will install the latest ones after the upgrade.3) There was a list of five software programs / drivers that were indicated as being required to be removed. I will do that prior to the update.4) There was a whole slew of Lenovo software and some drivers that were recommended to be removed. I can do that also but it seems that Lenovo has not developed updated versions yet. I think it might be best to wait for those before committing to the upgrade.5) Regarding drivers, when I ran Windows Update under Win 7, it has 7 driver updates available: a) AuthenTec driver update for TouchChip Fingerprint CoProcessor [my device is made by UPEK] b) Intel Lan - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection c) Lenovo LCD (1366x768) [This is the .INF file defining the ThinkPad display] d) Lenovo Other Hardware - Lenovo PM (Power Mgmt) Device e) nVidia - Graphics Adapter Quadro FX 880M f) Ricoh Company - Storage - PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller g) Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device Using Windows Update to install drivers has been prone to problems for many. I intend to update what I can from the Lenovo drivers site. a) Lenovo has an update to the Fingerprint software for Win7/Win8 which includes a new driver. Apparently AuthenTec bought up the technology from UPEK, that explains the name change. Since Lenovo recommends that the Fingerprint software be uninstalled, I am not sure whether to install the new software and then uninstall it prior to the Win 10 install or whether Lenovo will be coming out with a new version for Win 10. b) For the Intel LAN Adapter I will install the Lenovo update. c) I probably will let Windows Update install the LCD .INF file. Lenovo has two different versions, one appears to be newer which had included support for Win 10 and then removed it (?). d) The Power Mgmt Device is questionable since I was not able to find any update from Lenovo. e), f), g) I will use Lenovo's updates for these. [ I would hope Win 10 would apply any driver updates that would be needed, but whether Lenovo will have new ones available shortly after the releae of Win 10, I don't know. ] Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, JohnD
According to the information I have been able to find at Lenovo Support on upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and from Windows 7 to Windows 10, there appears to be a bunch of Lenovo software that must be or is recommended to be removed before doing the jump to Win 10. Whether I will be able to get updates for them at this point, I don't know. Since this will basically be used as a test system for Win 10, for somethings (such as the Fingerprint reader and a lot of other items) it is not a big deal. I will be happy to have basic functions working such as TouchPad, Keyboard, Ethernet, and Wireless. i will have some limited software installed which I also hope will continue to function. I suspect that Win 10 may update some of the drivers as part of the installation process. Firefox 4.0 beta 10 crashes my Thinkpad W510
Firefox Beta 4.10 crashes the video driver on my Thinkpad W510 running Windows 7 64. This behavior did not occur using Firefox 3.0 and it doesn't occur using Internet Explorer 9.0 Beta. I use my laptop at work in a docking station hooked up to 3 monitors. Firefox 4.0 Beta has not crashed while docked. It only crashes when it is being used as a portable machine using the laptops display. The last crash ID I had was in December because I quit using Firefox and switched to Internet Explorer.
Firefox doesn't allow me to edit my sharepoint site properly.* Upgrade to Firefox 4.0 Beta 11.
* Upgrade your graphic driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-266.58-whql-driver.html or from your computer manufacturer support site.
* If it does not solve your issue, try to disable Norton IPS 2.0 that is known to be crashy for Firefox 4. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
* Using the latest version of plugins is also good to prevent crashes, [http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ check your plugin]. -
ThinkPad W510 HDD LED indicator always on
Hi,
I'm using a ThinkPad W510 but I notice that the HDD light is always on, though there's no significant I/O task.
I remember the HDD light is blinking only when you're doing something with the hard disk, and most of other time, it stays off.
The machine is run with Windows 8. Don't know if there's anything wrong with it. Does anybody have the same situation? \
Thanks alot
Solved!
Go to Solution.I would suggest adding them back a few at a time, and see when it starts the behavior.

Thinkpad W510 - trying to get 2560x1600 resolution on Dell wfp2007 using a W510
Hi All,
I am looking at purchasing a W510. I have a Dell wfp2007 30" monitor that I would like to drive off of the W510, at the full 2560x1600 resolution.
The wfp2007 only has a Dual-Link Dvi - and the W510 comes with a DisplayPort. It would seem I need a DisplayPort to Dual Dvi cable to make this work.
My questions to you:
(1) Anyone have any experience getting 2560x1600 resolution with a w510 and a wfp2007?
(2) Would I need to get the dock (even though the laptop itself has a DisplayPort - because of the extra power supply?)
(3) Any other reccommendations for driving the wfp2007 with the w510 at 2560x1600?
Thank you very much for your help!!

He posted some stuff about W510 and resolution limitations. As I recall, the W510 has a DVI-I and won't support your resolution.
In regards to DisplayPort to DVI-D port on your monitor, one approach would be to by a powered DP to DVI converter. Passive converts max out at a lower resolution, so make sure you get an active/powered box if you go this route. -
I just upgraded from my trusty X301 to a new W510 and wanted to transfer my WWAN card over. It is a valid Lenovo part FRU# 43Y6477. Unfortunately, when I install the card, I cannot get by the 1804 "unauthorized WAN card" error. I did not have this problem in the X301. What gives?
What is the work around for this?
ThanksHello mate,
If your card is not in the whitelist, you have 2 choices :
- Buy a new one
- Hack the BIOS

No connection with Thinkpad T61 and iwl4965
Hi everybody!
I recently updated the kernel on my laptop to version 2.6.25. Since than my wireless device acts strange. I can connect to my wireless network but I cannot transmit or receive any data. I checked with netcfg2 and with knetworkmanager, both had the same results. I also checked it with and without the compat-wireless package installed. I also checked the 2.6.25-tp kernel from AUR but the results are the same. I can connect the network but it won't work.
I'm using a totally fresh installation of Arch64 on my thinkpad and it started acting that way right from the beginning. With the previous installation and the 2.6.24 Kernel running everything was fine and worked flawless.
Does anyone have an idea how I can get my wireless device back to work? I really need to be connected through wireless at my workplace!
Thanks a lot!Does really nobody else has this problem?
I checked with an kunbuntu live cd that contained knetworkmanager and the previous kernel and with that one it worked out of the box again. So there must be something wrong with the kernel I guess....
Does nobody have an idea how I could at least find out?
I checked the /etc/resolv.conf and it had the right entry and I also have a valid IP address. But when I want to ping my router all I get is "Destination host unreachable"...
Maybe somebody can help! The problem is the same also with the recent 2.6.25.4 Kernel.... -

ILife 08 and iMovie 06 compatibility issues?
Sorry if any of this has already been covered in other threads...
Has anyone had a chance to thoroughly test the 6.04 version of iMovie (download version if you install iLife 08) and know what compatibility issues there are?
I.E. How well does iPhoto 08 play with iMovie 06, or iMovie 06 with iDVD 08. Are the third party plugins problematic with v6.04?
From what I saw at the Apple store, iPhoto08 and iDVD08 would be the only apps that I would really want since iMovie08 seems to be a step backwards and iWeb is still lacking in everything that I wanted improved. But I don't want to waste the money to discover all sorts of "gotchas" with trying to get iMovie06 to play nice with the rest of iLife08...
Also, has anyone done an install excluding iMovie08 entirely? Do you still need to download 6.04 if installed this way? Are there any pitfalls?
This is like Deja vu or something...When iLife06 first came out, I installed everything but iMovie and stuck with iMovie05 for a long time cause of all the bugs and how long it took to get the third party plugins working...Of all the things for people to moan about with iMovie '08, the real unfortunate thing is it's inability to import effects, etc. (essentially your completed movie) from iMovie HD. One could somewhat forgive Apple for this debacle, if only it played nice with iMovie HD. Then it could be everything it's supporters say it is, i.e. "a different app," "a simple app for simpletons in a hurry" (although I find it's lack of tools and compatibility issues more difficult to manage).
...and a lot of us feel like this is the thing we're going to be stuck with going forward.
I keep thinking that something else is going to happen, because this can't be right. I think this diver/video engineer who came up with this concept is suffering from the bends.
Apple doesn't need the money, (as in making us buy Final Cut Pro for decent video editing), trust me, so I don't understand why it would take the PR hit.
iMovie '08 spoofs are already on YouTube, etc.

EDIT 22/10/09:
Finally came the expected driver, I think it's premature but it works perfectly.
Here the driver (r8192se_pci):
32bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33927923/ … 009.tar.gz
64bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34090326/ … bit.tar.gz
untar; make; make install; reboot and enjoy it
I test it with:
netcfg
standar commands:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwlist wlan0 scan
iwconfig wlan0 essid MySsid
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
dhcpcd wlan0
The first time I compile the module, function correctly, but after scan for available networks I haven't any results.
Recompile and everything worked again
[b]I edit the wiki, pleased read it and help me because my English is a bit basic.
thanks

CS4 and Windows 8 compatibility
Has anyone successfully installed CS4 on Windows 8? I am currently using Windows XP and received a pop up saying Microsoft are no longer releasing updates for XP after August and I am entitled to a free download of Windows 8. I am trying to decide whether to do this but risk losing my use of CS4 which I really don't want to do. Any advice much appreciated as not sure whether to just continue with XP. Thanks in advance.
If you search Google using the terms "CS4 and Windows 8 compatibility" you can probably find various results from both Adobe and Microsoft that should give you some idea of how much of a gamble you might face in changing your OS.
In my own experience, a change in OS has yet to be a positive experience... while most people loved XP in its day, I suffered years of poor performance with it as an upgrade from the moment it was installed and regretted doing it. Maybe you've had better experience and aren't as shy of it as I am. -
Player 10.1 and Air using Compatibility Mode
This is related to post at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2933137#2933137, but, thought I should start another since that one is marked answered.
I'm having a similar issue with an Air app, but, I am using 4.1 SDK (and LCCS 10.1 swc), but still getting the same error regarding GroupSpecifier (pasted below).
I have an Air app project and related web app project, which both use a library project (ARSystemLib in the trace below). The library project is using 4.1 SDK, and has the Flex 3 compatibility mode turned on, along with 10.1.0 set as "use a specific version" under "Flash Player Options". The Air project is also using 4.1 SDK and Flex 3 compatibility, along with the compiler option "-target-player=10.1.0".
For the web app, I had to remove the "Use a specific version" of 10.1.0 for it to compile ( was getting many "Classes must not be nested", which seems to be a difficult issue to fix after much research on others getting this message).
I'm okay with the web version not using 10.1 for p2p, but, critically need this for the Air version. I'm hoping it's not the "Compatibility" mode setting, as reworking the app without is a huge undertaking.
Thanks,
David

at com.ssc.compoHi David,
Apologies for the delayed response. I am guessing you will have to update the namespace in your <PROJECTNAME>-app.xml file under src of your project.
Your name space should be 2.0 or greater.
Its possible that your app has namespace like -
<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/1.5"> ,
but it should be
<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/2.0">
Also other options is to add -target-player=10.1.0 to your flex compiler options [additional compiler arguments]
Thanks
