ThinkPad W510 HDD LED indicator always on

Hi,
I'm using a ThinkPad W510 but I notice that the HDD light is always on, though there's no significant I/O task.
I remember the HDD light is blinking only when you're doing something with the hard disk, and most of other time, it stays off.
The machine is run with Windows 8. Don't know if there's anything wrong with it. Does anybody have the same situation? \
Thanks alot

I would suggest adding them back a few at a time, and see when it starts the behavior.

  • Satellite A500-14k - HDD LED indicator always blinking

    Hi
First sorry for my bad english
    I'm french and i recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A500-14k ( http://fr.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-A500-14K/1072806 )
I've got a little problem with this notebook and i don't know if someone has a solution
The LED indicator of the HDD is constantly flashing (1 blink per second) even in safe mode. I checked some forums and i have learned that there was something to do with the cd /dvd autorun function of the CD/DVD recorder.
If the autorun function is deactivate in windows registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\CDRom and key value changed from 1 to 0) the blinking disappears but i can't access any of my CD or DVD data ( the media are marked as blank). However, audio CD and video DVD are working except that they can't be started automatically.
The same thing happens if the CD/DVD recorder is deactivated in the device manager of the control panel : the led indicator has a normal activity.
I would like if this problem occurs with other owners of this product and if there is a solution to use normally the recorder without this flash
    Thanks

I don't have A500 but A300 and I cannot say for sure why this happen and what kind of HDD activity is in progress but what you can try is to remove some Toshiba preinstalled stuff like TEMPRO or preinstalled antivir application.
When the notebook is brand new first days many updates will be installed and in the background is always some activity. Is automatic update disabled?
Try also to remove TEMPRO. This tool is permanent active and search for updates.
Try simply to optimize preinstalled OS and watch carefully if something will change. I do it always after clean OS installation.

  • K8N SLI-FI - HDD LED always on

To anyone that has used this board, have you had any problems with the HDD LED always being on??
One of my customers returned two of these boards to me saying that his HDD LED would always stay on with both of the boards.  Thinking that he was just plugging in the LED backwards or something, I tried it for myself and sure enough the HDD LED would always be on.  Everything else worked fine with the board, POST fine, installed WinXP fine, but the LED would always stay on, not blinking or anything, when the hard drive was actually working/accessing.  Even running memtest, the LED stayed on solid.
Hooking the LED up in reverse caused the LED to no work at all.  Tried with IDE hard drive and SATA drive.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  I don't have any more of these boards in stock to test with .
    Thanks.

No, the power LED is working fine.  It stays on like it should.  When both LEDs are hooked up they both are on constantly.  I've tried different LEDs I have lying around the shop, mostly from broken cases, and any LED I plug into the HDD LED connector stays on constently.  Any LED plugged into the power LED connector turns on and stays on like it should.  By reverse I ment that I connected the positive to the negative and negative to positive.  Just as a test.  And the LED did not light up.  Which is supposed to happen I think.
It's the first time I've seen this problem and the only conclusion I can come up with is there is something wrong with the boards.  It's just where there are two boards, both with the same, silly, little problem.
Could it be the brand of hard drive??  I've tried with an IDE Maxtor and IDE Seagate, and a SATA Seagate.  Is there a setting in the BIOS that would cause this??
    Thanks

  • W520 freeze and HDD Led always on

    Hi, I've got a new W520 i7-2820, 8gb Ram, NVidia 1000M, SSD OCZ Vertex3.
After some problem with AHCI controller and the SSD now it works great, with all the drivers correctly installed, but sometimes (1 or 2 times a day) the system freeze and the hdd led stays always on (no flickering). I can move the mouse cursor on the screen but I can't do nothing else and I've to restart the system (pressing the power button for 5 seconds)
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you

First of all, don't do anything when you get the freeze and see if your W520 unfreezes on its own after up to 5 minutes. You might then check out this entire thread for numerous "fixes," but pay particular attention to message #9.

  • Hdd Led Always On!

The hdd led a time ago only blink when the HD is active...
But now the led is always on...
Is there something i can do?!

    Quote
Does anyone know if the issue w/ the activity LED not working for SATA devices is a hardware issue (like w/ the ICH5), or a software issue (like w/ the BIOS)?
it is a hardware thingy with the ich5. i seem to remember this once before on this forum, danny's the man to varify this..
and trusso m8, i seem to remember my DVD drive used to cause my led light to pulsate, if i put it on as a 2ndry master. but this is only possible to do on certain mobo's.
i think we would all benefit from some machine spec's m8 so if you could post em (or create a sig) it would be both appreciated and beneficial.

  • My 790fx GD70 had approx 3 years of perfect operation, now the HDD led is red :(

Hey everyone I'm new to the msi forums here, but I built a gaming rig about 3 years ago and its been running fantastic ever since.
Ive been looking to buy an Radeon 7950 and finally decided on the HIS 7950 IceQ boost clock from newegg for 299.
So I opened up the case just to make 100% sure that I had the necessary 2- 6 pin power connectors, which I did . I did this while the pc was on (I know dont shoot me!) I didn't touch anything on board just a few wires from the psu to look at the connectors, an my hand slighty bushed the side intake fan, no stoppage or anything like that.
When I looked up after I put the couple wires back I had no display, no keyboard or mouse, and the red HDD led was lit above the mobo power button :( :(.
Ive checked all connections and they seems to be fine, my brother has the same board in his rig, so ill take a pic of his and double check mine just to be totally sure.
The pc powers up with either the case or mobo buttons, all fans (cpu, psu, case, gpu) power up and run normally. All lights are blue that I can see, except for the red HDD led, no display, keyboard, or mouse. Also I cant power the system down by holding down either case or mobo buttons, only by switching the psu off.
After reading up on this forum and a couple others ive come to a couple possible conclusions:
Either something came unplugged which ive some how missed, my mobo has shorted somehow after approx 3 years of perfect operation, or my psu has blown.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? Has anyone seen something like this happen before?
The tough thing is this pc is currently used for music recording through pro tools and was about to become the main media display pc at my church, after the purchase of the new video card, so having it down meant no music recording today at church :( :(
    System Specs:
    AMD phenom II x4 955
    MSI 790fx gd70
    Asus Radeon 5750
    Mushkin Redline 1600mhz 4x2
    Crucial SSD 120gb
    Seagate 150gb HDD
Western Digital 1tb HDD (pro tools session storage)
    LG CD/DVD RW
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give!
By the way I wrote all that on my phone! Lol

Thanks for all the help so far you guys!! Ok so i spent some more time on it and did what you both suggested. Reseated the ram, 2 sticks of 4 gb 1600 mushkin, made sure that all satas were seated properly on both the mobo and HDD sides, and checked all power connections to the board. After that i cleared cmos, and pulled the battery just to be sure.  I checked the case pwr and reset connections on the front of the case and at the mobo, and everything seems to match my brothers board connections (went and took a few pics of his). I also moved my gpu up to the top slot of the mobo so i could see the little led screen on the mobo better.
So i fired her back up, and the dang red light was still on :-(. Also the little led screen isnt post anything at all, no numbers or letters are showing. I believe my brothers read 42 when i was taking pics of his rig (must be the code for all-is-well lol).
My psu is an 850 watt Xion. For  + 12v1 and +12v2 its 18A for +12v3 and +12v4 it reads 20A and 22A respectively.
I dont see xions around much anymore, did they go out of business or something?
So do you guys think its probably the mobo since its not giving a display at the little led screen? Did it just happen to blow when i had the side panel off, could i have done something without touching the board to cause this? Maybe handling the wires? Could it possibly be the psu?
It looks like i may be in for an earlier mobo and cpu upgrade then i had originally planned :-P
Oh also my case is a full tower Azza, im not sure of the model, but its always had great cooling! (But i dont overclock lol)
    Thanks so much again!

  • Solutions for hard to see HDD LED

I was looking for some easier ways to see the hard drive activity since HP has moved the HDD LED to the left or right side of the newer laptops.  I really hate not being able to always see what the hard drive is doing since the change in placement of the HDD light.  Every laptop I've ever had or worked with has had the HDD LED on top of the base which is a whole lot easier to see than on the side.  I'm currently using a free program called DiskLED which puts a light in the system tray which can show a huge selection of items including the HDD but only one at a time.  It seems to be very accurate and can be configured to update as fast as you want.  I'm still looking for other options that would allow me to have a physical LED that would be viewable from above the keyboard like it was on my previous HP laptop.  If anyone know of an easy, cheap fix I would love to know what that is.  Thanks

There was a useful blend mode in MacOS 9 and Carbon called "AddOver" that could be used to get high contrast shapes over any background, in a reversible way (great for cursors, paths, etc.).  Even on Windows, we can emulate that blend mode.
In Cocoa, Apple doesn't offer that blend mode, nor a way to handle reversible compositing beyond what we are already doing (difference blend mode).
We have been investigating ways to do better path drawing using OpenGL shaders, but didn't have a solution in time for CS5 (it's not as easy as it sounds).

  • Upgrade ThinkPad W510 to Win 10

I want to try to update a 5 year old ThinkPad W510, which I have not really been using much, from Win 7 to Win 10. I don't yet see it in the compatability list yet so I am not sure whether it will be viable although hardware-wise it meets the Win 10 specs. I looked at the recommendations for upgrading from Win 7 to Windows 8 and I will attempt to follow those as a first step. 1) It recommended updating the BIOS as there was a BIOS change relating to Windows 8. I have done that.2) I will remove a lot of unused software. Those that I want to retain might need to be updated and I will install the latest ones after the upgrade.3) There was a list of five software programs / drivers that were indicated as being required to be removed. I will do that prior to the update.4) There was a whole slew of Lenovo software and some drivers that were recommended to be removed. I can do that also but it seems that Lenovo has not developed updated versions yet. I think it might be best to wait for those before committing to the upgrade.5) Regarding drivers, when I ran Windows Update under Win 7, it has 7 driver updates available: a) AuthenTec driver update for TouchChip Fingerprint CoProcessor [my device is made by UPEK] b) Intel Lan - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection c) Lenovo LCD (1366x768) [This is the .INF file defining the ThinkPad display] d) Lenovo Other Hardware - Lenovo PM (Power Mgmt) Device e) nVidia - Graphics Adapter Quadro FX 880M f) Ricoh Company - Storage - PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller g) Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device   Using Windows Update to install drivers has been prone to problems for many. I intend to update what I can from the Lenovo drivers site. a) Lenovo has an update to the Fingerprint software for Win7/Win8 which includes a new driver. Apparently AuthenTec bought up the technology from UPEK, that explains the name change. Since Lenovo recommends that the Fingerprint software be uninstalled, I am not sure whether to install the new software and then uninstall it prior to the Win 10 install or whether Lenovo will be coming out with a new version for Win 10. b) For the Intel LAN Adapter I will install the Lenovo update. c) I probably will let Windows Update install the LCD .INF file. Lenovo has two different versions, one appears to be newer which had included support for Win 10 and then removed it (?). d) The Power Mgmt Device is questionable since I was not able to find any update from Lenovo. e), f), g) I will use Lenovo's updates for these.  [ I would hope Win 10 would apply any driver updates that would be needed, but whether Lenovo will have new ones available shortly after the releae of Win 10, I don't know. ] Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,   JohnD

According to the information I have been able to find at Lenovo Support on upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and from Windows 7 to Windows 10, there appears to be a bunch of Lenovo software that must be or is recommended to be removed before doing the jump to Win 10. Whether I will be able to get updates for them at this point, I don't know. Since this will basically be used as a test system for Win 10, for somethings (such as the Fingerprint reader and a lot of other items) it is not a big deal. I will be happy to have basic functions working such as TouchPad, Keyboard, Ethernet, and Wireless. i will have some limited software installed which I also hope will continue to function. I suspect that Win 10 may update some of the drivers as part of the installation process. This is what I have gathered regarding what should remain and what should be uninstalled: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KEEP:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------     Intel Network Connection Drivers

  • Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.

  • T430 2349 WLAN Indicator always on

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem with the LED-Indicator of my T430 2349: It is always on.
As soon as I power on the laptop (windows has not yet booted), the LED-Indicator is constantly on. When Windows is booted, Fn+F7 and switching off the WLAN does not turn off the LED indicator. Only the hardware switch, that powers off the WLAN-Card, switches off the indicator LED. The indicator does not blink when data is received.
I already searched the community, and though there is one other case where this problem was reported, the solution is not relevant for me, as it implied switching of the WWAN card which I do not have. (see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/WLAN-LED-indicator-stuck-on/m-p/294486/high...
I also already tried creating the registry entry "LedMode" - no success either.
The W-Lan adapter is an Intel 6300 Ultimate.
    Every advice is much appreciated.
    Best wishes,
    KeepOnTalking

    Hi
Remove the battery and AC adaptor.
Wait some hours (2-3 hours) and then press Power button.
Then insert the battery and connect AC adaptor and check if the indicator would be on even if the WLan is disabled.

  • HDD Led

I have new Mac Book Pro 15".
Where is the HDD Led??? And what is the front led near the opening cover??

    Ethan_0k,
There is no LED indicator for hard drive activity, if that is what you mean. The light at the front of the Macbook Pro is a "sleep" light. When you put your Macbook Pro to sleep, this light will pulse slowly (rather like it is breathing softly; that is the intent). When you start the Macbook Pro up, it will come on solid for a few seconds, indicating a successful POST operation (along with the startup chime).

  • An LED indicator that changes to 3 different colors and fades between each

    Hey everybody,
I'm trying to make an LED indicator that is hooked up to a scale. The scale will always read between 0 and 20lbs. What I need this LED to do is start off blue or green. Around 10lbs it needs to gradually fade to yellow, and at 20 it should do the same thing but to red.
I've tried using a color box with a case structure and also a picture wheel, but all I can come up with is hard color changes from one to the other. The fading between colors is what's killing me.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

  • Master2FAR HDD LED Problem

I'm having trouble getting my HDD LED to work correctly - it's always on.  It's connected correctly according to the manual (top left pin positive, pin directly below that ground).  My case wires for the led don't have positive and negative clearly marked for the connectors but obviously it only turns on at all one way.  When it does turn on it doesn't turn off; when it doesn't start on it doesn't turn on at all (well it's a diode so it should only work one way anyway). Anyone else have the problem of the HDD LED not working correctly, or have ideas of what I should do?
Sorry I don't have the sig you guys seem to require around here but I don't think this problem calls for me to make one :P I'm using a standarde IDE drive which has never had a problem like this before and I plugged it into another system which showed the activity correctly :/

Yep, only one processor so it's  always on
