ThinkPad W510 Keyboard problem

Hi for the past few weeks my keyboard has been acting up. When i go to make an AT sign for an email address it comes up as a different symbol. This has been on an off again for a few weeks and has just gotten bad today so can anyone help me .

I'm 99% certain this is a keyboard input language program. I'm willing to bet that when things go funny, hitting the question mark (?) gets a capitalized, accented É.
If so, check your input languages for French Canadian inputs.
In Windows 7, hit Start, type Input Languages, hit Enter, hit Change Keyboards.

Thinkpad S531 keyboard problem

Hello everyone.
I have bought my Thinkpad S531 almost a year ago (still under the warranty) but the problem I am having persists from the moment I bought it, I just didn't have the time to deal with it. I am using my laptop in dual boot and the problem manifests in slightly different ways on different systems:
Windows 8.1:
Sometimes when I type nothing happens until I slighty hit my laptop from the bottom or from the top face or if I shake the whole laptop slighty. After I do that the characters suddenly appear on the screen - several characters I typed in first, I don't think it would display the whole sentence if I typed it.
Ubuntu 14:
Sometimes when I type when I press a key it seems like it got stuck. For example, if I am writing something it continuously repeats one letter until I do some of the things I mentioned before for the Windows (hit/shake...). When I do that it stops and then also some of the characters I typed in later appears.
Those problems appear (on all of the keys of the keyboard) very often and I noticed it mostly happens when there is some kind of a pressure on the surface below the keyboard, for example if I am holding my hand there. It also happens if there is some kind of pressure under the laptop. It is very annoying and makes my laptop impossible to use sometimes. I also noticed my touchpad is not working most of the time, maybe those problems are connected.
Does anyone have the idea of what might be causing the problem? As I said, I am facing this issues from the day one.

My L530 also has that icon on the space bar, but no backlight either. So I believe the manual is right

Thinkpad G40 keyboard problems after updating from W98 to W7

Hi community users.
I'm new here with a, for me, typical problem.
I’m having a problem with my Laptop keyboard IBM ThinkPad G40, type: 23884SG, Windows 7.
Since I updated from Windows 98 to Windows 7 the keyboard definition is wrong. I’m not able to find the right configuration of it on base of the standard list of country and language definitions in W7.
Who can help me with this.
I already installed some drivers from the Lenova site but nothing seems to help.
So the problem is that I can’t find the right service from the country and language menu to the keyboard in W7.
All suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks for your response to my problem.
Problem isn't the choice of the specific language. The problem after the update is that I'm not able to choose the right combination of language and the type of keyboard selection in Windows 7. The selection list is long: from South-Africa to Sweden.
Although most of the characters on the keys on the lower part of the keyboard correspond with the ones on the screen but especially the keys on the upper part don't.
So I'm searching to a correct selection of the combination language and specific type of keyboard. Or there must be some driver witch can be download.

ThinkPad L530 Keyboard problem

Hello, I have a ThinkPad L530 and I am experiencing an issue of not being able to turn on the keyboard backlight. I am aware that some models are not supporting this feature, but I think that mine did come with the feature because of the icon on the spacebar. The function key shortcuts all work, except for the fn+space (keyboard backlight) one. Is it possible that this is due old drivers? Below you can see my keyboard and the backlight icon on the spacebar. Any help is much appreciated.

ThinkPad W510 USB Problem

Hi , for some reason , my USB ports have a bad behavior . They only work after a system restart , and if i remove what is attached to a USb port and reattached it it won't work anymore . The Port does not detect it anymore .
Please any help will be appreciated .

hey rony,
try removing the USB drivers via device manager, let windows install its generic drivers. Make sure that no USB devices are connected at this time.
once done, try your usb ports again.

For example, "t" generates "tr", "y" generates "yu", "backspace" generates "backspace" plus "IBM access connections", "m" generates "mn" and "n" generates "mn". Not all keys are wrong.
For what it's worth, the odd behaviour started shortly after a trip to Miami in which I had a meeting at a cafe in which we were undercover but it was pouring cats and dogs - it was like having a meeting in a sauna - so I am wondering if the high humidity could have caused the behaviour.
I tried replacing the keyboard but the new keyboard has the same problem.
The machine in question is a Thinkpad T23 running Windows XP Pro
Any help would be appreciated as I am now in Los Angeles using a borrowed Mac! :-)

Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.

Upgrade ThinkPad W510 to Win 10

I want to try to update a 5 year old ThinkPad W510, which I have not really been using much, from Win 7 to Win 10. I don't yet see it in the compatability list yet so I am not sure whether it will be viable although hardware-wise it meets the Win 10 specs. I looked at the recommendations for upgrading from Win 7 to Windows 8 and I will attempt to follow those as a first step. 1) It recommended updating the BIOS as there was a BIOS change relating to Windows 8. I have done that.2) I will remove a lot of unused software. Those that I want to retain might need to be updated and I will install the latest ones after the upgrade.3) There was a list of five software programs / drivers that were indicated as being required to be removed. I will do that prior to the update.4) There was a whole slew of Lenovo software and some drivers that were recommended to be removed. I can do that also but it seems that Lenovo has not developed updated versions yet. I think it might be best to wait for those before committing to the upgrade.5) Regarding drivers,when I ran Windows Update under Win 7, it has 7 driver updates available: a) AuthenTec driver update for TouchChip Fingerprint CoProcessor [my device is made by UPEK] b) Intel Lan - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection c) Lenovo LCD (1366x768) [This is the .INF file defining the ThinkPad display] d) Lenovo Other Hardware - Lenovo PM (Power Mgmt) Device e) nVidia - Graphics Adapter Quadro FX 880M f) Ricoh Company - Storage - PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller g) Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device   Using Windows Update to install drivers has been prone to problems for many. I intend to update what I can from the Lenovo drivers site. a) Lenovo has an update to the Fingerprint software for Win7/Win8 which includes a new driver. Apparently AuthenTec bought up the technology from UPEK, that explains the name change. Since Lenovo recommends that the Fingerprint software be uninstalled, I am not sure whether to install the new software and then uninstall it prior to the Win 10 install or whether Lenovo will be coming out with a new version for Win 10. b) For the Intel LAN Adapter I will install the Lenovo update. c) I probably will let Windows Update install the LCD .INF file. Lenovo has two different versions, one appears to be newer which had included support for Win 10 and then removed it (?). d) The Power Mgmt Device is questionable since I was not able to find any update from Lenovo. e), f), g) I will use Lenovo's updates for these.  [ I would hope Win 10 would apply any driver updates that would be needed, but whether Lenovo will have new ones available shortly after the releae of Win 10, I don't know. ] Any suggestions would be appreciated. According to the information I have been able to find at Lenovo Support on upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and from Windows 7 to Windows 10, there appears to be a bunch of Lenovo software that must be or is recommended to be removed before doing the jump to Win 10. Whether I will be able to get updates for them at this point, I don't know. Since this will basically be used as a test system for Win 10, for somethings (such as the Fingerprint reader and a lot of other items) it is not a big deal. I will be happy to have basic functions working such as TouchPad, Keyboard, Ethernet, and Wireless. i will have some limited software installed which I also hope will continue to function. I suspect that Win 10 may update some of the drivers as part of the installation process. External ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint issues with scroll (55Y9003) and hotkeys on a x201

Once more there is a glitch with the drivers for this external keyboard 55Y9003.
I have the drivers:
16.2.19.13 for the ultranav system of the x201
1.10 for the external keyboard
My system is XP sp3.
The keyboard of the x201is fine relative to the one 55Y9003.
The scrolling is set to standard for both systems.
Please do not advise to select smooth; it is not a solution and the smooth scrolling has been systematically utterly unusable.
The issues:
-the hotkeys on the external keyboards are not all working:
basically, fn+f4 and fn+nmlk work but the rest does not (say fn+f8)
-the scrolling of the external keyboard is not at all identical to the scrolling of the x201.
For instance, in pdfs viewed with foxit for instance, I have not a problem to scroll horizontally with the x201 starting with the hand tool.
WIth the external keyboard, whan I press the middle button to activate the scrolling, it remains the hand tool, I can scroll vertically but not horizontally.
FIrefox as also issues whith the middle button.
-the external keyboard still suffers from the sticky shift key.
I know the x201 and the 55Y9003 are no longer fashionable, but Is there some directly guy working at Lenovo who could help ?

I have the ThinkPad USB keyboard on a non-Lenovo desktop, and it works.
Yes the keyboard driver installs, but not the Lenovo System Interface Driver, for obvious reasons. All the buttons and TrackPoint work.
Yes the TrackPoint does not scroll in all programs. Search the community for "trackpoint scroll fix" and you will come up with instructions on how to fix this.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint (55Y9003) FRU

I'm trying to order a ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint part no. 55Y9003 here in Bulgaria.
But here they are selling only the European/Bulgarian version with a slighly differerent layout and part no. 55Y9009.
I had this problem before with the old UltraNav Keyboard and the keboards for my X40, X60 and X61s. What I did then was to order the keyboards as a replacement.
So I need to find the FRU P/N to order it as a replacement. But I only know the FRU of the bulgarian version (57Y4647).
I remember it used to be easy to find it on the product page, though I may be mistaking as I can't find it now.
Please does anybody know where I can find the FRU P/N of part no. 55Y9003?
Also I don't understand why the retailer here in Bulgaria can't do that, but lets not overdo it :-)

Still if anyone in Europe is ordering this keyboard have in mind that the enter is the fat one and not the one on the picture if you havent figured that out already about the keyboards in Europe.

On a computer without any sound card, the osd.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ThinkPad Compact Keyboard with TrackPoint driver) can't startup. It exit after pop up a message box "This program requier windows Vista/Win7."
The FnLk require osd.exe, so FnLk can't work on a computer without sound card.
Please solve this bug, thanks!

T430 keyboard problems

Hello,
I have a keyboard problem currently and I am trying to figure out the most efficient way of solving it.
My "W" key is hard to press, my "Q" key popped out (glued it back on) and my "(TWO)" key doesn't work at all.
I do play games and I'm a buttonmasher and yes I have definitely learned my lesson of not abusing it.
Now I was wondering if theres anyway of replacing the specific keys or i'd have to replace the whole keyboard,
and if i can replace just the specific keys, is there a normal version and a backlight version?

I think you'd better replace the whole keyboard,
the T430 keyboard is a separate accessory,
And it is not very expensive, you can buy one to replace it

Number lock - ThinkPad USB keyboard and USB numeric keypad- they're not independent

Because Lenovo has discontinued my favorite keyboard ever, the USB ThinkPad with Ultra Nav full size keyboard with number pad, I bought a keyboard and numeric pad separately. I ended up with the 55Y9003 ThinkPad USB Keyboard with Track Point and the 33L3225 numeric keypad. That gives me the full solution, a good keyboard with a numeric keypad. Well, almost.
The issue I'm having is that the number lock on the main keyboard (turns the "uio", "jkl" and other keys into a number pad) controls the number lock on the separate keypad, and vice versa. What I want is for the numeric keypad to always be set for numbers and my main keyboard to always be set for letters. Instead, what I have is both are set for numbers or not, together. This of course defeats the main point of having a separate keypad for the numbers.
Is there a setting somewhere to fix this? I'm running Windows XP Professional on an HP Compaq desktop computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Migrated User Account Keyboard Problem AFTER Login

I have a brand-new MacBookPro (with multi-touch trackpad) that came with Leopard preinstalled. When I first started up the new computer, I set up a new administrator user account first. Then I used Migration Assistant to migrate my primary user account from my PowerBook G4, which is running the latest version of Tiger. I can log into my old user account with the same password I have always used, and everything looks fine--my old desktop is there, my Mail, iCal and iTunes settings all look great, etc.--but I can't use the keyboard. I can use the mouse to click on menus; the keys for the volume and backlight controls work, and some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard work (which seems particularly weird), but I can't do anything else with the keyboard. When I log out of the account and try to go back to the new admin account, the keyboard no longer works at all until I reboot. If I go directly into the new admin account, the keyboard is fine; it only starts locking up AFTER I log into my old user account. I have not had any keyboard problems with any other user accounts that I have created from scratch on the MacBookPro, nor have I had problems with the other user accounts I migrated from the PowerBook. After consulting with an Apple rep on the phone, I have tried the following things:
1. deleting my migrated keychain file on the problem user account and letting it make a new login keychain;
2. deleting the original default keychain on the PowerBook and re-running the Migration Assistant;
3. deleting the problem user on the MacBookPro using the option of creating a disk image, and then creating an empty file in the Users folder with the same name as the problem user account and then dragging the files from the disk image into the folder, and then creating a new version of the user account with the same name, password, etc.;
4. running Disk Utility to fix permissions (multiple times);
5. I have completely erased and reinstalled the system on the MacBookPro using the install DVDs twice. The first time, I ran Migration Assistant immediately after the "Welcome," and the second time I set up a new administrator account first and then ran Migration Assistant.

7. I have tried moving my user files over by hand but then I have a ton of permission problems and I was having trouble getting my Mail settings/mailboxes to move over properly. I've spent hours and hours on this.
I have NEVER had so much trouble upgrading to a new computer or a new OS in all the years I've owned Macs! What am I missing???

Well...I'm not sure which of the following fixed my problem, but once I realized it was something to do with the numeric keypad keys, I went into both the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and the Universal Access preferences and I made sure that I set everything back to the default settings. I suspect that going to Keyboard&Mouse-->Keyboard Shortcuts and clicking on "Restore Defaults" is what did the trick. So far, so good. I hope this helps somebody else; I couldn't find anything else anywhere about this somewhat quirky problem.

Keyboard problems out of the box with iPhone 3g

My iPhone 3g is showing strange keyboard behavior, typically starts when launching the SMS app.
The "P" and Backspace keys, the keys on the rightmost part of the touch area, are non-responsive. The issue will correct itself after 15 mins or so, but it's become very annoying.
I've made sure I'm not touching any other part of the screen as a possible cause. Showed it to and had three other iPhone users see what I see and they all agree it seems like a bug, just to confirm it's not me.
Took it to the Apple Store and of course the iPhone behaves when showing it to the Genius.
Anyone else experienced keyboard problems with 2.0 firmware?

Well, I took my 16GB iPhone 3g (white) back to the Apple Store today and the Genius looked it over -- said that's the first keyboard problem he's seen come in and mentioned that it was strange the "dead zone" on the touch screen was vertical since, according to him, most "dead zones" tend to be horizontal areas. He said the touch screen matrix is laid out in three horizontal bands on the screens.
Bottom line: he gave me a new working iPhone 3g.
He did mention that all returned iPhone 3g's are being sent directly back to the iPhone 3g engineering team for full "autopsies", not just sent back to factory for refurb. He said they want to fully diagnose and understand what defects are out there so as to solve the root cause moving forward.
