ThinkPad W541 weird noise

My Thinkpad W541 is really new, just received it two weeks ago. So far so good, but there's just one little annoying bit. Whenever it is on, I can hear weird noises, it sounded a bit like two rotating metal cylinders scraping against each other, a little like drizzling sound.. It isnt really loud, but loud enough for me to pick it up when the room is quiet. I am not sure which part/ component is causing the noise, but I suspect it to come from the fan louvers though i am not sure at all. I also noticed one interesting thing about this problem, the sound is the loudest whenever I am on my desktop or when i switch to the start screen. For instance, if i suddenly open file explorer, the sound intensity gets lesser but when i minimize everything to show the desktop or the start screen, the sound intensity gets back up.
Is this a problem I need to worry about? I've invested a lot of money into this machine, so if there's some hardware glitch i really want to get it fixed ASAP before it damages other system components. Thanks in advance guys.

Hi, the engineer visisted an replaced my current fan with a brand new cooling fan. But it doenst seem to solve the problem. When I turn the computer on, the same problem persists. Which can mean either two things, one , the general design of lenovo's cooling fan is flawed or two, the problem isn't with the cooling fan. But i really don't understand, if it's not the cooling fan then what could it be? I mean mine comes with an SSD, the only moving parts in the whole machine is the cooling fan? Or not? I am clearly not the expert here.
And to be frank, I really don't understand the problem at all. The buzzing sound is only the loudest when i switch to the start screen and desktop, but when I am on other windows, like if i open a browser or a notepad on top, the buzzing sound intensity just drops to almost unhearable. I tried changing the desktop wallpaper into different colors shcemes and see if it makes a difference, but it doesnt. After the fan replacement, i've updated the computer's BIOS from the website, and the update doesn't seem to make any difference. I also did more testing, i changed the setting to do nothing when i close the laptop lid at the power options so that when I close the lid only the display turns off while the computer is still running. So i tried switching to the start screen (where the buzzing is loudest) and try closing the laptop lid to turn off the display and leave the laptop running, then i tried listening for the buzzing sound. It turns out that the buzzing sound disappears when I turn off the display. This led me to think that perhaps this has something to do with the display stuff?Or the cooling fan's control system is programmed according to the display? I dont know.
To summarize, here are the facts that I have tested over and over again:
1) The buzzing sound is the loudest when I switch to desktop, app list , start screen.
2) When the display is turned off (laptop lid closed) the sound disappears (the laptop is still running)
3) The problem persists after the cooling fan is replaced with a brand new one.
4) The BIOS is updated to the latest version
5) There are no other issues with the laptop other than this annoying bit.
Some advice on my next step would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Color Laserjet Pro M277dw making weird noises when printing

Hello Everyone, At my office we bought the Color Laserjet Pro M277dw printer last week, and since then everytime we print, the printer makes really weird noises. We checked inside but everything inside looks to be okay . Here you have the link with an audio I recorded with the sound it makes. Thank you very much and it would be great if you guys could help us to find a solution! Best, Lorena

Grinding can only mean physical damage to the printer.  You need to isolate the sound and replace the part to resolve the problem. The good news is that this is a new printer and will be covered by the warranty.  Contact HP directly and have them run you through the options.  It shouldnt cost you anything, but you do need to contact them directly.

I want to upgrade my 2007 Mac desktop to 10.5 Leopard. I am currently running on 10.4.11. When I put the leopard disk into the drive all it does is make a weird noise and then spits the disk right back out. It doesn't do this with any other discs, only this software. Is it still possible to update this computer?

    Yes. Try Amazon.
Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.

Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

  • Weird noises in the Skype call that only i can hea...

so im getting these weird noise in skype, obviously, ANYWAY the first problem was that skype plays audio through the speakers instead of my headphones which i fixed by seletecting "Speakers and Headphones" as a default device and communication device and that solved the problem untill i had this problem which im asking RIGHT NOW, anyway im getting like a fan like static sound in the skype call i made sure that no one was using a fan in the call i was in and all of them werent using any, i then unplugged my headphones so the audio can be played through the speakers of my laptop and everyone could hear that noise, the only way i can fix this is by setting Communications headphones as a default device but then it brings me back to the problem of other audio such as youtube videos being played through the external speakers but if i disable "Speakers and Headphones" everything works but i cant ADJUST THE VOLUME OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM WTF? CAN SOMEONE HELP ME!

depending on your service provider, they're going to have to take care of it possibly with a ticket of sorts. usually it's an issue at the tower level. i can guarantee nothings wrong with your phone tho:D

  • Macbook Pro is slow/laggy and makes a weird noise

    Hello members,
I have a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion with all the latest updates. Everything was fine until 3 days back, when it started acting up. Moving the cursor was extremely laggy, and starting up any application takes forever. I also noticed a weird noise, more like a phone pulse dial, coming from the front. It repeats itself every 3 seconds, so I first thought it must be the HDD failing. But I have run all sorts of hardware tests but every test seems to infer that the HDD is working fine. Is it possible that the HDD is failing even though it doesn't show up on any test? The Apple store nearest to me is more than a 3 hour drive away, so it's almost impossible to go there in person. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

I'm having the exact same issue on two different Mac Pros with three different USB based headsets. It happens consistently with every single use, after about 45 minutes or so. In fact, almost 45 minutes on the dot.

  • ThinkPad W541 shuts down randomly

Hi all, I have looked at the forum and seen that my problem is "quite common" on older versions of ThinkPad.Here we are with a ThinkPad W541, with core i7 vPro (quad core), 16G DDR3... one of the best of the moment. Running under Windows 7 Pro (waiting for Windows 10). The problem is about random shut down of the computer, either plugged or on the battery. The screen freezes, and a few seconds after the computer is off. After that, I can turn it on pushing the power button and it asks me if I want to start Windows the normal way, or in safe mode... No error, no blue screen, nothing that tells me that there is a problem. The problem was present the first days of use, 2 months ago, but only about once a week. The time I go to eat, or something else, and when I come back the computer is off. I first though about "normal" Windows problems", but it seems not.Everything is up to date.Lenovo care center tests do not see any errors. Now, the problem is happening several times a day, especially when I move the computer from one room to another... or more strange, when I touch the screen to move it a bit !! But it still happens randomly, when I am not aside the machine. I recently added 16G RAM (2x8G Crucial ballistix DDR3 12800 1.35v) to get the maximum of 32G accepted. This RAM is guaranteed compatible. The problem should not come from the new RAM, because it was present before I added it.But it may have increased the frequence ?? I did not see real solutions for that problem in the forum. Could anyone help ? Cheers.

Hi, Thank you for the comment. - The "old memory" is Samsung DDR3 8G 12800 1600 MHz. The "new one" is Crucial Ballistix DDR3 8G 12800 1600 MHz.- The system does not overheat and fans are running perfectly- Cores temperatures are between 40 and 48 °C- RAM temperature is 45-46 °C- SSD T° is 50°C- All other T° are about the same- I never got any blue screen before crushing Crushing preferentially happen  when I move the screen !! Could it be a bad connexion somewhere ? I run the Lenovo Solution Center tests under Windows and with a Linux Bootable CD. ==> no error found. Cheers

  • On start up disk slot makes weird noise

this isn't my question but its my friends mac makes this weird noise like dvvv divvv when on start up coming from disk slot

It is normal to make some DVD drive "access" noise at startup. If the drive still works (reads CDs or DVDs), don't worry about it - until it doesn't work anymore!

  • Why does my Mac make weird noises?

It's a late 2011 Macbook Pro, and for some reason, it makes a weird noise.. kind of like beads jiggling inside. It happens when i tilt my MacBook forward, and backwards. It's a brand new one. It's coming from inside.

I have the exact same problem and it's been a week or so. It kind of just makes those weird noises out of nowhere and scares the **** out of me. Did you end up at the Apple Store or were you able to fix it up on your own?

  • Very weird noise...

I was using photoshop on Windows with my MacBook Pro and all of a sudden I hear this noise that sounds like it's loading something. Most of you know that with a MacBook Pro that when loading takes place you can hear it in the centre / left side. Usually the only noise that is coming from the right is when you insert a CD. I have no CD's in my drive and I never heard this sound before. It just randomly started happening, never moved / bumped my MacBook, was just using photoshop.
The noise would get louder then it would slow down stop for 5 seconds, then go back up... and it's freaking annoying.
Should I System Restore or something? I have no idea what to do.

For some reason it's not letting me edit so I keep having to reply. Anyways, when it's not making the weird noise from the right side, it now makes this deep quiet noise in the centre, it sounds like an idle engine, literally. What is happening to my laptop all of a sudden!?

  • Weird Noises from Macbook Pro

Some Weird noises from my MacBook Pro mid to late 2014

Maybe you could describe what kind of "weird" noises you are hearing? Everybody's perception of weird is not the same, and something that you may think is weird may have a logical explanation. But we can't even begin to diagnose it without a little more to go on....

  • Why is my iPad making weird noises?

Lately my iPad has been making weird noises. It only happens sometimes  not always. Nothing happens when im normally surfing internet or  anything without sound emitting from it. Usually i can listen to songs  or watch and listen to videos without any problem but it is happening a  lot today. While listening to anything the sound is like echoing and is  louder than usual. (It sounds like it is coming from really old poor  quality speakers with the loudest volume) This happens even when a small  sound is made for e.g, when u receive a notification. This gets worse  at the moment i close my iPad. After closing it the weird drilling noise  lasts for 2-4 seconds. Last week the same thing happened prior to when  iPad COMPLETELY lost sound for a day. And then it came back when i  connected my iPad to laptop and then restarted iPad. (Even though i had  restarted it twice before). Also i cant take it to an Apple store  because there is no apple store nearby.
I have an iPad mini, with iOS 7.0.4
I also use headphones they work perfectly but the manufacturing company  is not that great so is it because of not so good quality headphones?
Please answer asap i get a mini heart attack every time this happens.

    Try reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
Note: Data will not be affected but settings will be reset.

  • IBook making weird noise - think it's the fan

Hi, I've had this iBook for just over two years now, and lately it's been making a weird noise. Every so often something inside - I think it's the fan - will start making this sort of high whining whirring sound, then quiet down after a few minutes. It's not particularly tied to anything I'm doing, and will sometimes happen when I'm not doing anything. Also, I am using the computer on a normal desk, not in any situation which could lead to overheating, and the computer doesn't feel any hotter than usual.
I think the problem is getting more frequent over the past few months. I originally had 10.2 and I installed 10.4 when it came out, but I think the noise had already happened once before then, so I can't directly blame that. The computer has been running a little slower since I installed, though, and the trackpad has stopped working a few times lately.
Anyone have any suggestions what could be causing this, and is it just a nuisance or is it the first sign of the computer breaking down? If it needs repairing, where do I start? I'm very ignorant about hardware, so please try to explain simply! I do have a friend who can help me if at-home repairs are all that's needed, though.

    Esther,
Have you ever done an Archive and Install of your OS? If so, you may have a Previous System folder on your hard drive taking up a lot of space. This can safely be deleted.
Some folks delete files regularly, but forget to empty the trash. It isn't gone (and doesn't free up space) until you empty the trash.
You may want to download Monolingual, which will allow you to remove unnecessary languages and foreign fonts. Most people recommend keeping around 5 gigs free to allow for smooth operating in Tiger.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive, as Barry has instructed above. (After repairing my hard drive via Safe Mode, I always repair permissions, even if I have done so recently.)
Hope you are on your way to a happier, quieter hard drive.

  • Why is my macbook making a weird noise when trying to install a cd?

I had to send my macbook in a few months ago to get a new logic board, and now it will not install cds.  About ten minutes into installation it starts making a weird noise and freezes and the only way to stop it is to force shut down my computer. Anyone else have this problem?

Make sure your Mac has good ventilation >  Learn about the fans in your Mac
Better to not run too many applications simultaneously, especially any streaming video content.
For issues with fans, reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
