Thinkpad W701 - Deleted BIOS, mysterious USB/Esata problems before update

Hi,
Yesterday I was supposed tto try out my new esata external disk, I had used it before with my EX495 homeserver, without any problems.
But when I conncted it to teh W701 it seemed like the connection failed and the drive fell to sleep when I tried to write to it. When I used USB it worked perfectly, and with the server esata worked without a hitch.
After trying that some time, I decided to try the lacie updater, and then a reboot. After that all of the usb ports failed.
I had allready looked at the Lenovo updateprogram, and found some updates, so I controlled the computer with the trackpad, and updated, but when the computer rebooted suddenly, and screen showed a underscore blinking and that was it. After that the computer screen went black and won't turn on anymore.
I have it it for 4-5 weeks now, and after 1 week the MB failed when setting in new ram, and was switched, now it has failed again - is there anything I could to, or does this one have to go in on service again?
Solved!

Just as a verification of this issue, I got the same problem when I updated my BIOS (letting ThinkVantage do it's thing).  I have a ThinkPad W701 (got it 4 weeks ago), just called support and they verified that I had to send it in for a new MB.  Would have thought there was some QC when releasing these updates, but, I guess not....

Been trying to restore Ipod touch for days after updating Itunes. Error code #9. Stuck on restore screen. Tried all the solutions posted. Tried on 2 computers, Vista + XP. No device shown on computer. Thanks Apple! Didn't have this problem before update. How about rolling back your update?

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Correct the 2 problems before updating this airport wireless device

    Hi, guys.
I want to access my Time Capsule from the internet.
But i already have a router establishing my internet connnection, so i've set it to connect using Ethernet and wireless mode is off.
This setting doesn't show the "share disc over WAN" and i need that. (As far as i can tell). Therefor i have to switch the connection mode from Off (Bridge Mode) to share a public IP - this enables the "share disc over WAN" option.
But TC returns this message to me when updating the device. "Correct the 2 problems before updating this airport wireless device".
I'm confused? Cuz i thought they should mirror my Routers local IP's?
What do i do? Please help, any advice is much appreciated.

The Asus model that you mentioned is definitely a router, so it is handling DHCP services for your network.
If you have the Time Capsule set up in Bridge Mode, I cannot understand why you are getting a message about DHCP address conflicts....since DHCP is turned off when the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode.
Unless....you have tried to change some settings around manually.
It would probably be best to start over and perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule, then configure it again. The last setting to check before you click Update would be to make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
As far as connecting from the Internet....that's another question since everything that I've seen assumes that the Time Capsule is configured as the main router on the network. I cannot recall seeing a setup when the Time Capsule was not the main router on the network, but will check around.

  • HP G72 - BIOS bricked - USB restore problems

    Hello!
I disabled "Virtualization" in my BIOS of my HP G72-a05SG. But after saving, it rebooted and the NUMLOCK and CAPSLOCK lights are blinking 2 times, so, according to this site, the BIOS is corrupt. And my HP_TOOLS partition doesn't exist on my hard drive.
So I've prepared my USB drive with "HP BIOS-Update (UEFI)" and "HP System Diagnostics (UEFI)" and followed the instructions of this. It doesn't recover from there, but the notebook's accessing the hard drive, the USB drive's beeing accessed all the time, but nothing happenes, no beep, no video output.
Is my notebook completely bricked, or did I something wrong?
Can somebody upload his/her HP_TOOLS partition from the hard drive so that I can try to recover the BIOS from there?
    I appreciate any help!

Fixed it myself using this wonderful guide (maybe this file naming tips are also useful). HP BIOS Update appeared and recovered the BIOS image from the stick. Yay!

  • Xperia T USB Connectivity problem after updating to Jellybean

    Hi,
This is the first problem I have had with my Xperia T. On the whole I love it.
I updated to Jellybean last week, and until now I have had no problems, and have been enjoying all the improvements.
But now when I try to sync with my PC, it just constantly connects then disconnects 2 seconds later, then re-connects etc. It charges perfectly with the same USB lead, and all my other USB gadgets work perfectly in all of my ports on my laptop. I have re-booted both devices several times, and that has not solved the problem. It's not the end of the world as I can use drop box to transfer files, but it does mean I can't charge from my laptop which I normally do when I'm out and about, and won't be able to do future software updates.
Any one else had this issue? or have a fix? Helpfull suggestions appreciated.
    Dan

Try disabling any antivirus/firewall software you have on the PC temporarily and see if this helps.

  • Please help with a website for job apllication. I did not have this problem before updating to new firefox!

I am applying for positions through lake county reg. off. ed. I can get on website but when I actually apply for jobs it does not go the correct page. This was not an issue before getting the new firefox

I do not have a solution, just the same complaint.  ***!  !    I just used the iTunes store 2 weeks ago and now, after reviewing everything they asked for including ID/Pass/ Account Info etc.  I can't even get into the store.  I have tried asking at the Mac store and it has all been to no avail.  I was perfectly happy with iTunes before all of this ********... seriously what is the issue with iTunes?  They ask me to upload a new version (with no system specs anywhere that I can find on the page)  and then say it can't utilized because of system inadequacy.  It is exceedingly frustrating.

  • Problem after update software

Hi, I have a problem with my Nokia 2700c after software update(v.7.80) The problem is that after update my music player blink in white screen and I can't see any data when I play music. I didn't have this problem before update. I've reinstalled the update but it's not success. Please help me, what must I do?

    Hello EveryBody
To update your Nokia 2700, DON'T USE "nokia software update" directly.
You'll have to install NOKIA OVI SUITE, then sign in with your account ou register.
Afterwards update your 2700 via the update option of OVI SUITE.
I just tested it and it works

  • USB ports problem

    Hi all,
I have got a brand new laptop Pavilion dv6-2060ea and have noticed problems with the usb ports. I generally use linux as a primary OS but I have noticed the same problem on Windows 7 as well. The laptop sometimes doesn't recognize usb devices as a mouse or an external harddrive, it means when I turn on the laptop boot on an OS, the mouse doesn't work and I have to reinsert it to get it work. It happens 2 or 3 times from 5 boots so it's quite often I would say. The same problem is with the external hdd, have to reinsert it and then it's all right. I have noticed that there has been a new BIOS released and this should fix some problems with usb ports but I already have upgraded to that BIOS(F.13A) and problems persist. I also miss more options in the BIOS about the CPU settings because the laptop has Core i7 and there is no any option to configure the CPU.
Be patient with my English, please. Cheers, Pepe

  • Obscure Nano and Mini XP USB Driver Problem Finally Solved

I had a rather obscure USB driver registry problem that few others would probably have, but this might be helpful.
I was unable to get Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition to properly recognize either my iPod Mini or Nano 3rd generation. The iPods would be seen by XP in Device Manager (would show Apple iPod USB Driver) when connected, but would immediately disconnect. The Apple iPod USB Driver properties would then show “This device cannot start (Code 10).”
I first tried all the Apple-recommended fixes: the five Rs; reinstalling the Apple iPod USB driver; disconnecting all other USB devices; switching USB plug-in points; putting the iPod into Drive Mode; and all the other things shown in the troubleshooting guide “iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes,” http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
None of the above worked. And on occasion after uninstalling and reinstalling the iPod USB driver, I would get a blue screen with the error message “driverirql_not_less_orequal,” sometimes followed by stop codes and something called “USBPORT.SYS.”
Apple phone support was unable to help, claiming that XP Media Center Edition was not supported, though the problem appeared to have no relation to MCE versus Home or Pro.
Then I finally stumbled onto the solution. I previously had installed a USB drive encryption program (NTINinja) on my computer. Although I had uninstalled the program months earlier, it had left a registry entry which was interfering with the iPods. When I deleted the registry entry, the problem was solved.
Those of you having similar recognition problems as described above might check Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus Controllers, USB Root Hub, Properties, Details, then select Class Lower Filters in the drop-down box. If there is an entry, that might be the problem.
To get rid of the entry, first write down what it is. Then go to Start, Run, Regedit. Backup the registry (File, Export). Then go to Edit, Find, and type in the suspect entry. It should find the registry key containing the entry in HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\.
Right click on the LowerFilters key and select Modify. Then delete the suspect entry. Close the registry editor. You might have to reboot – can’t remember.
I can’t guarantee the above is completely accurate, but it may help someone.

OK now! Dag, I was going crazy. I had two brand new Raptors and was trying to hook them up in a RAID 0 config. I am no dummy. It would hang at detecting arrays. I could not figure it out for the life of me. I will not talk about all of the combos that I tried. My buddy told me to try datalifeguard from WD. I did. Well, one HD showed no serial number in the extended test. An error message popped up. Said the drive was not working. So, Newegg sends me a dead drive and wastes days and days out of my life. I hooked up the one good drive just now. What do I see? For the first time in my life, I am seeing the raid bios! This almost cost me a divorce. Seriously though, the wife would come in and rub my shoulders like a fighter after a few hours of getting my azz whipped by this new rig. I am now going to make the floppy with the newer drivers like was done here. Just incase. I am in Raid bios now in the other room. Time to go set up XP on one drive for now. I refuse to wait for the RMA'ed second Raptor.

  • KT7 Turbo V3 and USB mouse problem

Hello!  I'm hoping someone here can help me out with this problem.  I've looked thru numerous other threads here regarding USB problems, and I'm not certain if any of them apply to me.
KT7 Turbo V3 with lastest Live BIOS downloaded and flashed.
    Athlon 1GHz
    512MB RAM (2x256 Crucial)
    Windows 98SE
    300W PSU
    Nvidia Geforce2 MX
Logitech Cordless Optical USB mouse (2 button)
Anyway, in pursuing a problem discussed in another thread, I upgraded my BIOS and re-installed my operating system.  Actually, I've done both multiple times, including re-Fdisking and formatting.
Since then, whenever I make a BIOS change of any type, or change any drivers, etc., the mouse stops responding, and Windows gives a "No mouse detected error" upon booting. I fix this by going into Control Panel>System>Devices and deleting the Human Interface device, and then either Refresh or re-boot.
I'm afraid to even install the Logitech drivers anymore, because the last time I tried it, and had this problem, Windows wouldn't even boot after I deleted the mouse in Devices.
I never had a single problem with this mouse until I updated my BIOS.  Has anyone heard of this problem before?  I'm thinking about going back a few BIOS versions, but I also want to pop an Athlon 1600+ in my machine, so I was afraid I might need a newer version to support it.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!
    - Rick

FYI for anyone else having this problem, going back to an old BIOS version seems to have fixed this.  Both v2.4 and 2.9 seem to work fine.

  • After restoring BIOS from USB still HP BIOS Utility starts

Hi guys, after a BIOS update my HP Pavilion 15-e026sl not boot anymore, it does the following scheme:
    I press the power button
Power, Bloc Maiusc and wifi lights and fan on but dark screen
2/3 seconds and everything shut down
The pc automatically reboot with bloc maiusc light flashing
HP Bios update starts with the need to recovery Bios because it's corrupted
Flash the Bios, but when verifying the bios flashed I got error
    Everything restart from point 4
So, I read on this forum and on the HP Support Center how to create the famous "HP_TOOLS" USB stick in order to restore the BIOS image. (With another pc) From the Support Page of my Pavilion 15-026sl I downloaded the latest BIOS update (F.23), I started the .exe file and I created the USB Stick choosing the correct option.
Then I put the USB on the Pavilion and with Win + B + Power combination the pc started to recover BIOS from USB, and this is the log that I extracted from the USB stick:

    P.S.: My warranty ended.

Holding Power On for 1 minute with no external power and power on
    But nothing's changed

Everything's gone successful, the pc reboot and I get the same scheme of situation before restoring the BIOS, with a little difference:
    I press the power button
Power, Bloc Maiusc and wifi lights and fan on but dark screen
2/3 seconds and everything shut down
The pc automatically reboot with bloc maiusc light flashing
HP Bios update starts saying 'The System BIOS is being recovered' (but if I have already done it from USB?!)
    Flash the Bios
    Verifying BIOS image
    Flash the Bios
    Verifying BIOS image
    Verification of BIOS image failed
The pc reboot itself and everything restart from point 2.
Infinite Loop! How can I do to resolve this issue? It's something broken on the mobo? Or do I have to clear the CMOS? Or something similar?
    P.S.: My warranty ended.
P.S.2: I put USB Stick in USB2.0 port and not in USB3.0 ports  That is a good plan
P.S.3: I have also tried to:
    Remove HDD and power on
Remove RAMs simultaneously and power on This will not help
    Remove CD/DVD-RW and power on
Holding Power On for 1 minute with no external power and power on
    But nothing's changed
Thank you to anyone who wants to help me
Download the current BIOS Rompaq on another Windows PC. Double click it to open it. Choose the" create a recovery USB flash drive to use on devices with corrupted BIOS." option
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-134117-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
Plug a 2GB or larger capacity flash drive into an available port
Once the recovery usb flash drive has been created, plug it into your pavilion 15 notebook and press the power button to boot to it and write a fresh bios rom file into the CMOS ROM to replace the corrupted one currently there.

  • Booting BIOS from USB doesn't work (890FXA-GD70)

    Hi all,
in case of BIOS crash, recent MSI motherboards should be able to boot using a BIOS provided from an USB pendrive. I have tested this function by calling it directly by BIOS option, but it fails after BIOS is loaded getting a blank screen (debug code: 09) or the monitor off (debug code: 31). Does any of you know whether the problem is fixable or any hints? Is it working to you?
    890FXA-GD70 (either BIOS 1.0 and 1.6)
Verbarim Store'n' go 4GB USB pendrive (tested with FAT32, FAT16 formats, partitions smaller, bigger... nothing)
BIOS save function doesn't work as well. Some bytes are different comparing the saved file to original one.

it's probably m-flash issue, what's current bios version installed?
Yes, you can say: "Flash your BIOS to the last version released some days ago, and retry", but that is the last chance for clear reasons. The problem hasn't been fixed flashing from 1.0 to 1.6, and I guess likely this code with the bug is in non flashable part of BIOS.
I wonder whether Boot 2nd BIOS from USB Drive (or Backup BIOS to USB Drive) is working for someone, it looks impossible it is entirely broken...

  • Thinkpad S540 possible BIOS bug concerning WOL

I have had a Thinkpad S540 for a few months, and have it installed as dual boot Windows 8.1 and arch linux.  After completely shutting the machine down from linux I found that the battery would be down to around 70% charge after three days unused, and decided to investigate this problem since it was not reasonable for a new battery to lose charge at anything like this rate.
By chance I came across a piece of information concerning the issue of disabling WOL (Wake on LAN) on the network interface, since I had seen one report that by default WOL is enabled and this requires power to be going to the network interface even when shut down in order to be able to respond to magic packets to start the machine up when it is shut down.
First I checked the BIOS WOL setting and found it was set to "AC only" by default. So I changed it to disabled. This machine has the latest available BIOS version 1.54.
However on investigating this after rebooting in linux I found that
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    enabled
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: g
So WOL was still enabled despite it being set to disabled in the BIOS!
I learned that I can make sure that in arch linux the WOL setting can be changed to set to disabled after bootup by using a udev rule:
    # cat 70-disable_wol.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="enp3s0", RUN+="/usr/bin/ethtool -s enp3s0 wol d"
Then rebooting the machine I checked the WOL setting and it really is disabled now:
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: d
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    disabled
So I then ensured that the battery was 100% charged and shut down the machine and left it two and a half days - rebooting this morning the battery was still at 100% charge and no longer discharges unnecessarily when the machine is switched off,  so this is a clear indication of a bug in the BIOS for the WOL setting - it is still enabled despite the BIOS saying it is disabled!
How do I report this to Lenovo so that they can fix the BIOS and release a new one that is working?
I am aware of other users with different Thinkpads who seem to have the same problem, so this may be more widespread an issue than just on the S540.
It is also not just an issue with the battery running down when fully shut down but will likely also be a problem for a machine in suspend mode since the network interface may be consuming a watt or so of power when in suspend, which will again run the battery down at an unacceptable rate.
I cannot imagine any use case where it would be necessary to have WOL enabled on a laptop that is mostly going to be used mobile - so having the default setting to AC only enabled, and having a BIOS bug enabling it when it is explicitely disabled is a serious problem.

Anyone running windows in the same laptop can check the same issue of battery drain due to WOl being enabled by default - in the Device Manager under the network card, opening the settings menu for the ethernet wired card the default for Wake-on-LAN on my computer was set to enabled. This can be changed to disabled, and you may need to also disable the setting for Wake on Magic Packet. Also in the Power Management tab it is possible to uncheck the settings for "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer"
In my laptop these were all set to enabled by default.

  • VMWare ESXi 4.0 on Lenovo Thinkpad W701???

    Hello everybody,
Do anyone knows if we can run VMware ESXI 4.0 on the new Lenovo Thinkpad W701, we shall upgrade this machine to 12GBs of RAM and a second HDD (SSD).  I've read the most common problems occur with the chipset controller (ICH10) and the NIC.
Does anybody have experience with this?
    Thanks
    Philippe

Sorry to bring up an old thread - but I Was wondering the same thing.  I think this would be an excellent tool for swing migraitons and shrinking ESX disks, etc., especially if ESXi will utilize the onboard RAID1 disks.
