Thinkpad X1 Carbon Wi-Fi problems

I just bought a new x1 Carbon 3rd generation three weeks ago. I am experiencing very bothering wifi connection issues.The wifi line suddenly drops and I have to wait 15-20 minutes in order to get back the connection. I have a smartphone and a second laptop perfectly running internet with wifi all the time.So it is not a problem with my router or my wifi line. It is very frustrating to see a brand new 2000 euro laptop not working, while your old laptop works without issue... I don't know if somebody can help me to fix this problem, thanks. 

I have the same card and had exactly the same problem.
Go back into device manager, right click, select 'properties'
Under the 'power management' tab un-tick the 'Allow the computer to tun off this device to save power'.
Restart the computer.
That worked for me but there are also other solutions that have been reported to work:
In device manager, right click, select 'properties'
Under the 'Advanced' tab find 'U-APSD' in the list and 'disable' it
Also find 'HT Mode' in the list and set it to 'HT Mode'
Restart the computer
This problem left me literally without a laptop for a month as I sent it back to base for 'repair' and rendered it unusable for a couple of weeks before and a week after this 'repair' while I troubleshooted the problem myself. I hope this helps and good luck!

  • Thinkpad X1 Carbon stuck on splash screen

    I bought a new X1 Carbon (20A7) a week ago and from time to time the laptop gets stuck on the ThinkPad splash screen when booting. I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then it boots fine. My brother has this problem with T540p, although this happens to him a LOT more often (also, if he waits patiently for 10-20 minutes, the system boots eventually, I havent tried that on my X1). It doesn't matter if the AC is connected, whether there is something connected to USB ports, whether it was a restart or just normal boot, there is no pattern that I can see, this seems random. We tried updating the BIOS to the newest version, our USB ports are not bent or anything, the SSD with the OS is set as the first boot device. This still happens. I see there are more people with thinkpads who have the similar problem, but their solutions do not apply (if there were any).

    OK, so I contacted support, Lenovo replaced my SSD drive (wrranty applies) and the problem is gone. The service guy said that SSD Firmware update using Lenovo application may have worked, but I had Ubuntu installed, so I was unable to run it.

  • Thinkpad X1 Carbon (3Gen) Battery Not Charging (plugged in not charging)

    I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen3) Model 20BS touchscreen  running Windows 7 64 bit. The battery is not charging -- it's in a perpetual state of "plugged in not charging"  and even when plugged in, it’s losing appr 1 percent per day (down to 31%). This has happened a few times over the past 3-4 months since I got the machine, but I've managed to find things that "fixed" it (at least temporarily): - Resetting the power gauge worked once - Changing the custom battery charge threshold worked a few times - Plugging in the power cord at different stages of reboot seemed to fix it once (although not sure why / how) Based on previous thread posts, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager and then tried to run Battery Gauge Reset, but to no avail. And the reset only appears to run for about 30 sec before the system tray icon switches back to normal. Thanks in advance. Karl

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Repair... why so long?

    I purchased a ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop in early November, since I really needed a PC (I regularly use a Mac) to work with a few applications. However, 3 weeks into using the laptop, its printscreen button fell off, and I have only used it once or twice. I called the customer support and delivered it to my local service centre. I asked customer support how long it would take to repair my laptop, and the representative said "around 5 business days". It has been at least 5 weeks since I dropped off my laptop at the service centre and they told me they're still waiting for the parts to arrive to repair my laptop. 
    I bought this laptop for school work that requires a PC and now school's starting again, and my laptop is not ready and I don't even know when it'll be ready. I am very frustrated - I mean, it is only the keyboard that needs reparation and why is it taking THIS long? I bought a laptop to use, not to wait for a simple reparation for 5 weeks. And now I have no laptop to use and this is seriously interfering with my school work.
    Is there a way to formally file a complaint on this case? 
    Any suggestion would help, thanks!

    I went through this exact same thing with my X1 Carbon. It took 4-5 weeks to the point they were still waiting on a keyboard replacement that was backordered. Eventually they just said I can get a replacement model and I waited for the X1 Carbon Touch.
    I now have the X1C Touch and the touchscreen barely works. It's going back and I am done with Lenovo. This has been ongoing since August and I've had to resort to using a Sony Vaio from 3 years back that has less problems than these brand new "high-end" Lenovo ThinkPads.

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 vs Gen 2.

    I have started using the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 as my main work laptop this week, and have officially retired my ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 for backup purpose. So far this is what i feel are the major positives of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 vs Gen 1.
    Positives:
    -Better TrackPad
    The quality of the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 1 trackpad is a definitively a plus compared to the old ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2. The surface finish of the ThinkPad Carbon Gen 2 is smooth, compared to the rough rubberised surface of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1. Also, the trackpad left and right click is more precise, and is not as loud as the ThinkPad Yoga, which is the main convertible tablet i use nowadays.
    -Build Quality
    ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 that i got had some build quality issues, especially in the screen area and the TrackPad. Also, the overall fit and finish of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 is lot worse than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2. I have to say that the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 fit and finish is top notch, it is the only ThinkPad that i can compare to the Macbook Air 13 that i got one year ago (yes i do have Macbook laptop).
    Surface coating on the X1 Carbon Gen 2 is anodised hard layer over Magnesium Alloy for the main body chassis (i think the screen cover is CFRP, but i am not sure), rather than the more typical rubberised layer of the older ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1.
    Palmrest on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 also resists fingerprint and palm print rather well, even if your palm sweats heavily.
    -Ports
    The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 2 definitely has an advantage over the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1, with its generous selection of ports. There are:
    - full sized HDMI 1.4 port
    -Mini DisplayPort 1.2
    -Specialised Gigabit ethernet port (adapter included)
    -USB 3.0 x 2.
    -One Link Port
    On the older ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1, i had to rely on the USB 3.0 for docking and ethernet needs.
    -Screen
    The WQHD IPS (there is also the 1600x900 resolution version which is same as old ThinkPad X1 Carbon) on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 is simply superb, as there is no ghosting, contrast is great, and the viewing angle is superb too. The touch screen version of the screen has a gorilla glass type cover, which is protected by a matte plastic protector, while the non touch screen version uses has a matte surface, and it has better outdoor usability or under strong external lighting.
    I highly recommend the WQHD screen for anyone whom wants a great viewing experience.
    -Upgradability
    The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has an internal 80 mm M.2 NGFF slot for the storage, and there is also a separate M.2 42 mm slot for the WWAN card (rumored to be able to be used as a secondary M.2 42mm slot), with an additional half height miniPCIe for the wireless card.
    Obviously, there are also some flaws with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2.
    Keyboard
    The new keyboard placement does take a few day to get use to, especially if you frequently use other laptops. I frequently press on the delete ubtton when i try to press Backspace button.
    Also, i have a habit of pressing Ctrl + Space bar for backlight, since the Fn button is no longer next to the Ctrl and now resides as a touch strip key 6th row.
    Personally, i wished that the physical Fn key stays as a physical button next to the Ctrl button on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and use that to switch the touch strip function, rather than moving the Fn button to the 6th row.
    The touch strip Fn row is pretty nifty idea, but i think one can use a 7th row for the touch screen, and keep the old 6th Function row.
    TrackPoint
    Personally i think the old TrackPoint physical buttons are better, the TrackPad integrated button for the TrackPoint still has to evolve a bit in the current guise to be true direct replacement for the old physical buttons in terms of usability. Ergonomics are just not there when compared to the old ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 TrackPoints' button.

  • USB 3.0 devices not being detected on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon

    After every reboot or cold boot, no USB 3.0 devices are detected on my
    Thinkpad X1 Carbon Touch. (Intel Series 7 chipset)
    There is a way to get them to be detected, but it doesn't survive a reboot
    and it's ugly.
    Go into device manger and uninstall the device "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible
    host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)"
    The do a "Scan for hardware changes"
    Then everything is detected correctly.

    I tried that, Windows 10 wont replace it's own driver.  (Windows has
    determined that the driver software for your device is up to date.)

    I've been fighting it for a long time. It's downright annoying.  I can plug
    it into my USB 2.0 port and it works all the time, but a lot slower, or
    even plugging it into a USB 2.0 hub that's plugged into a USB 3.0 port
    always works too, and slightly faster than the USB 2.0 port. (but not as
    fast as USB 3.0)
    I suspect it's some kind of power management issue to do with the driver,
    devices aren't getting the power up signal so they just don't show up at
    all.  It could be a hardware difference, but the same devices just worked
    on Win8.1 and below.

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon scrolling not working

    Hello,
    I just received my new ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 20A7). This is running with Windows 7, 64 bits.
    Scrolling from the touchpad (with one or two fingers) does not work.
    I tried installing the latest drivers from Lenovo's website (although you would assume that the latest drivers are installed when you buy a new machine), but that did not help.
    When I go to the control panel and to the advanced settings for the touchpad, I can see that the scrolling features are activated. They just don't work.
    Sometimes, I notice that after startup, scrolling works for a couple minutes, then not anymore.
    Could you please help me out?

    Remember that this is users helping users here, moderated by volunteers like me. Although there is some Lenovo presence, they can't patrol the entire community. They do try to help with some of the broader issues.
    The odd part about what you describe is that the UltraNav driver install fails (6hgx81ww.exe). Have you tried manually uninstalling the old one (Control Panel>Programs and Features) then runnning the installer again?

  • Protective film layer on ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch models

    QuestionI just unpacked my new ThinkPad X1 Carbon touch and noticed that it appears as though the screen has a protective plastic film affixed to it.  It is most noticeable around the mic and cam, where holes appear to exist.
    I can't find any documentation saying that this should be removed, and it's not easy to pry the sheet off at the corners (in fact, I've had zero luck, but haven't tried much because I don't want to damage anything). Do I keep trying to pry the sheet off or assume it's part of the design?  
    Answer 
    There is a protective film layer that covers the display and should not be removed.  
    This extends over the viewing area and stops about 1/32" from the edge.   There are circular reliefs around the camara and two microphone ports at the top of the screen where this layer can also more easily be seen.

    This film is unbelievably frustrating. I am switching jobs and chose to stay with the T440s under my new employment, although I had to get a new laptop. This time I chose to go with the touchscreen version, only to now see a film that causes graininess across my entire screen. I am coming from a T440s non-touchscreen with the AUO display (got lucky with that one) and that picture quality is exactly what I was wanting. I am highly disappointed in this unremovable film and will certainly be calling in regarding this. Is there any way to completely and safely remove it? I get the sense it is no more important to the screen than say a Zagg screen protector would be, IE touchscreen wll work perfectly fine without it, etc. Very frustrating as screen protectors like this ALWAYS cause some kind of disruption in the picture quality and I never saw mention of this film in any of the reviews I read about the touchscreen of this laptop.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems

    I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems.  In order to get the computer to start up, I have to unplug it, remove the battery, re-insert the battery and turn it on, once it starts the start up sequence, I can plug in the power cord.
    If I plug the cord in before I push the power button, all of the lights go out, and it does nothing. 
    I have tried several power supplies, and a new battery, even though the old battery seems to work.
    All of the updates are applied, including the latest bios update.
    The computer seems to work normally unless it goes into standby, then it just turns off.
    Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Did you replace the primary battery which snaps into the back, or the internal CMOS/RTC battery inside the unit?

  • [solved] ThinkPad connect with extern Monitor Problem

    Hello community
    I have installed arch on my T420 integrated HD 3000 and i have the Problem that when i start arch and the boot messages comes i can see the deamon starts ok,ok,ok who should be on the right side but on the NEC they was displayed 5 cm inside. Also when iam on the console and i type dmesg all the output scroll down and broke 5 cm from the roof. And when iam on openbox and i will maximize one window it would be maximized on the size from the Laptop LCD.

    I have connect my ThinkPad per Dockingstation Displayport (I try also DVI) with an NEC PA241W. It seems arch takes the 1600x900 resolution from the Laptop :-(
    I dont know what to do makes the Kernel the Problem?
    On my second PC i have there an Nvidia when i start arch for install all are perfect on my NEC i connected it with DVI

    i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
    so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
    And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900

    when i start firefox it was displayes well on my external but when i opened xterm or thunar pcman i have to open my laptop and move from it up to the external do i make a mistake?

  • Thinkpad A31 Ultrabay Plus release problem

    I have a Thinkpad A31 that I'm repairing - I removed the Ultrabay enclosure that the CD-ROM fits into.
    I've reinserted it and have issues with the eject lever.
    The release mechanism allows the eject lever to come out, but there is no resistance on the eject lever (when pushing it in) with a CD-ROM in the _Ultrabay Plus_.  This means that the only way to eject the CD-ROM is to manually pull it out, which requires the keyboard and plastic palm area to be removed.
    I have checked the springs and they are present on the eject lever mechanism.
    I have a copy of the A31 manual and have read up on the Ultrabay sections.

    I've only had to do it once, and that was a while ago, but I believe there's a post by Ray Kawakami on TPF dealing with this problem, I'm just way too tired to look for it now......
    With no intention to insult you whatsoever, two bays exibiting the same problem sound like a human error to me...of course, being a human myself, I may very well be wrong...

  • Carbon Copy Cloner Problem: Can't see my Macs HD when selecting Target Disk

    I cannot find an answer anywhere on the net, so I'm trying the trusty Apple Discussions forums. Using Carbon Copy Cloner, I backed up everything onto an external HD and I erased everything from my G5 and reinstalled the software it came with. I then also reinstalled Tiger OS X and now, using CCC, I chose all the original backed up volume from my external HD as my Source Disk, but when I try to save them back onto my G5's HD, I cannot see my Macintosh HD under CCC's Target Disk options. (Note: I recently did exactly the same thing with my iBook using CCC and I was able to see the iBook's HD under CCC's Target Disk options without any problems).
    More info: I'm trying to do an Incremental backup, though I tried the "Backup everything" option too (which, incidentally, would defeat the purpose of erasing and reinstalling) just to see if my Macintosh HD would show up under the Target Disk, but it still didn't.
    I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get my Macintosh HD to appear under my Target Disk options on CCC. Thx.

    Well done! but you don't need to be "on your own" - you would do well to:
    •  use the link that 'baltwo' gave you and at the very least look at Announcements and Stickies
    •  use CCC Help available online here or (same docs) from the CCC Help menu.

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2nd+OneLinkPro Dock = No IP Address During Imaging (OSD) via SCCM 2012 R2

    I'm trying to image a second generatoin X1 Carbon that also has a OneLinkPro dock attached via SCCM 2012 R2.
    The USB stick is plugged into the dock, as is Ethernet & power.
    When I boot into the preinstallation environment, I don't have an IP address.
    The USB stick is fine - works on all 26 other devices here
    The network cable is fine - I'm able to get an IP & image from other systems
    I tried two OneLinkPro docks, same problem on both
    If I use the Ethernet adapter, it works fine
    I'm convinced its a driver issue at this point.
    I was directed to www.lenovo.com/onelinkdrivers to locate OneLink dock drivers, and I've downloaded the package.
    The downloaded EXE (tp_onelink_dock.exe) extracts to C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\Dock by default
    In C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\Dock you have another EXE Setup_OneLink_Dock_Lenovo_v10826.exe
    This immediately launches an installshield setup (run from %temp%)
    There no options to extract the drivers - it just installs the drivers, and none of the switches I've thrown at it have yielded any results.
    I found a data1.cab file but I can't seem to extract anything with 7Zip or expand
    How are folks with second gen X1 Carbons who use SCCM for OSD successfully imaging those machines with the OneLinkPro dock? (without the use of the Ethernet adapter of course.)

    Fauxlution:
    Install drivers on an x86 machine
    Navigate to C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Onelinkdock (or something like that)
    Grab the driver directories & save them elsewhere
    Repeat process for x64 machine because the installer will only install drivers for the architecture of the system its run on.  (x86 system = x86 drivers; x64 system = x64 drivers)
    Clean up the drivers (extra non-essential files in there)
    Import both sets of drivers into SCCM
    Bake architecture specific Realtek drivers into boot image
    Couldn't be simpler.

    I just ordered my first Thinkpad - I got the X1 Carbon. Adding Windows 8 Pro was an additional $50, but I already have a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade disc and the external DVD drive to install it. Is there anything specific to Thinkpads that I need to know when doing clean install of Windows 8?

     Firstly, you'll want to make sure you have the latest BIOS, found here. Secondly, you need to boot into the BIOS by pressing Enter at POST to interrupt startup and then press F1 to go into BIOS. Once in BIOS, Secure Boot underneath Security ► Secure Boot needs to be set to Disabled and Boot mode underneath Startup needs to be set to UEFI. Once this is done, connect the external drive and interrupt startup at POST again, but now press F12 to choose and boot from the external device. Then all that needs to be done is follow the instructions to install Windows 8.

    First, are you still under warranty?  The best screens are the ones somebody else pays for.
    There are multiple generations and screen options.  Your model number from the sticker on the back would help.  If your model has the characters CTO in it, it is configured-to-order, so send me your serial number via private message.  Do not post it in the open forum.
