Thinkpad X1 CPU load high when idling?

I want to kick myself for not posting this as soon as I noticed, but well, nothing to do about it now.
A couple of months ago and after some update, not sure which (maybe the Thinkvantage Tools update? Or the graphics drivers, I think are the only things I updated in this time), my Thinkpad X1 (late 2011 model, i7 2640M @ 2.8, 8GB RAM) has started to go off real hard at the main fan when the machine is idling, which doens't make sense.
I run Win 7 64 bit Pro. I set the screensaver to just "Blank" and locking the system on activation, and after a bunch of minutes more, it's set to turn off the screen too.
After a few minutes of the screen being off, the fan will start up and go to max, real loud. I resume the computer from that state, logging in and unlocking it, and after a few seconds into the desktop, the fan goes off. If as soon as I unlock I check the Task Manager, the only process eating up the CPU is the System Idle Process, like it should be.
What exactly could be going on here? Can any of the latest things I updated be doing something in the background while te hcomputer is idling? It's really bad, because if I leave the machine idling, I don't want it to be going off like crazy. It's not just the fan that goes off, the machine gathers temperature, I can feel it if I touch the left part f the keyboard. So the CPU is busy doing SOMETHING, but what?
Any help apreciated!!!
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I don't have a "real time" antivirus installed, so there are no such scanning processes in my system.
My average load is between 5 and 3 percent! It only goes up when I am working, which is NOT when it's idling. I am talking about normal situations. it goes from that 3-5 to full.
I will ask again perhaps you know, is there ANY process monitor that will log all activity to a file so I can check what is going on while the machine is idling with the screen off?

  • CPU load higher after applying in 147440 kernel on Oracle database servers

    Hi all,
Just wanted to know if anyone else is seeing an Increased CPU load with higher peaks and for longer periods of time, especially on single thread processes on oracle database servers. Our Oracle Database versions vary from Oracle 10 to Oracle 11.1.0.7 11.2.0.2 10.2.0.4. The Hardware includes Sunfire V245's, V440 and T5240. We saw a slight performance hit when going to 147440-02 at the first of Oct, but no big deal. Then we applied 147440-04 in the first part of Nov. And of course we got CPU panics and Zfs file system stopped mounting basically a complete disaster. Oracle provided and IDR for the CPU panic and then later release 147440-06. Which resolved the CPU panics and zfs file system mounts. But now our load average on is 1 to 3 points higher during load, grid control is constantly complaining of 100% utilization. I have had a call open since the first of November with oracle/sun support and have provided guds performance stats on before and after Kernel change. They are still saying that its not an issue. It is so bad we had to roll back to a July kernel on one of the servers.

Just to let you all know what we have found. After 2 1/2 months of working with Oracle Kernel team, they have identified the Oracle Enterprise Manager (emagent) (Grid control Agent) was using nearly 60000 threads under the 147440 Kernel and only 1500 threads under an older kernel.
I googled the solution for the emagent, but I continue to press Oracle Kernel Engineers to work with their software division, to identify other products that might cause similar problems.

  • Cpu usage high when loading cache group

    Hi,
What are the possible reasons that results high cpu usage when loading read-only cache group with big root table (~ 1 million records)? I have tried setting Logging=0 (without cache agent), 1 or 2 but it doesn't help. Are there any other tuning configuration required to avoid high cpu consumption?
ttVersion: TimesTen Release 6.0.2 (32 bit Solaris)
Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

High CPU usage is not necessarily a problem as long as the CPU is being used to do useful work. In that case high CPU usage shows that things are being processed taling maximum advantage of available CPU power. The single most common mistake is to not properly size the primary key hash index in TimesTen. Whenever you create a table with a PK in TimesTen (whetehr it is part of cache group or just a standalone table) myou must always specify the size of the PK hash index using the UNIQUE HASH ON (pk colukns) PAGES = n clause (see the documentation). n should be set to the maximum number of rows expected in the table / 256. The default is sized for a table of just 4000 rows! If you try and load 1M rows into this table we will be wasting a lot of CPU time serially scanning the (very long) hash chains in each bucket for every row inserted...

  • CPU Usage high when USB eneabled

I have a PC running Windows XP with a MS6340 (V5) motherboard and Athlon XP 1800 processor.
When getting a poor response I noticed that the performance tab on Task manager showed that CPU usage was wildly fluctuating between 50-60%. This was farily soon after booting up and nothing else was running. The Processes tab on task manager showed that there were no processes running which got anywhere near accounting for this.
I downloaded a program called Iarsn TaskInfo2002 which shows that the CPU Usage was because of something called Interrupts Time placeholder and (to a lesser extent) DPC Time Placeholder.
Anyway the interesting thing is that  by disabling my USB ports (via device manager) and then rebooting the problem was gone. (Interrupts Time and DPC Placeholders don't clock anything.)
Now, however, I have a USB camera and Printer and so MUST get my USB ports enabled again.
I can enable them after booting and then the problem is not as bad, but I nearly always forget to disable them again before shutting down and then next time its a pain.
    Is this likely to be
    A motherboard problem,
    BIOS problem
    Windows XP problem
    or me being stupid.
Any (polite) advice would be gratefuilly received
    SIDDY

    Hi,
    It's not a motherboard problem.
As the board only provides the ports, nothing more.
The program that queries the ports for data is most likely the problem.
Try deinstalling the printer or camera software, see what happens.

  • High CPU load when sampling from two PCI 4472

    Hi,
LabVIEW 8.6, DAQmx 8.7.2  PC: Pentium 4  3.2 GHz, 2 GB Ram, Windows XP Prof Service Pack 2
I have an application with two PCI-4472 cards connected together with a RTSICable and I am sampling at 44.1 kHz.
When I only sample from one of the cards the CPU load is about 2-3 % regardles of whitch off the cards I am sampling from.
But when I sample from both cards ths CPU load goes up to 50-60 %.
I have made an clean VI with only an DAQ Assistant and this gives the same result: 3% + 3%  = 60% ... ???
What can I do to get the CPU load down when using two PCI-4472 cards ?
    Kind regards

This is happening to me too, but i found a solution. try to change the way you look at music , on the left of search is 4 buttons, List view , Album List view, Grid view , Cover Flow view. try to change the view, then view your cpu usage, it worked for me, but not for my friend, so im not sure that it will work

  • Why is itunes using 94-97% of my cpu, even when idle?

i am running a 2.53ghz macbook pro with snow leopard, and whenever i have itunes running, it hovers around 94-97% cpu usage, even when idle. Whats wrong?

Try initially deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist file and the /Home/Library/Caches/Firefox/ folder. If you have installed any Firefox extensions/plug-ins be sure to upgrade them to the latest versions or uninstall them.

  • Continual HD activity, high CPU usage when idle

I got my first notebook, a Compaq V2000, a few weeks ago and have Arch set up pretty well on it but I have a few issues.  Even when the machine is sitting idle it sounds like the HD is doing a read (or whatever) about every 5 seconds.  This only starts after I log into Gnome and stops if I log out.
I tried a couple of things with hdparm:
If I try 'hdparm -y /dev/hda' the drive goes to standby but immediately spins up again.
'hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda' disables APM and stops the cyclic behavior.  This would seem to be good but during the 5 second cycle the drive alternates between quiet and noisy and this leaves it in the noisy state.
I tried to determine what might be causing all this disk activity so I edited lilo.conf to remove "acpi=on apm=off" from the "append=" line and in rc.conf I put a ! in front of all modules and daemons and rebooted.  I removed the applets from task bar.  No change.
I ran top to see if I could tell what was accessing the HD but I'm not knowledgable enough to make much sense of it.  I did notice that on my notebook the top summary shows:
CPU: ~30% user, ~10% system, ~60% idle with 'wait' bouncing between 0 and 5%
On my main computer, also running Arch/Gnome, I get
CPU: ~2% user, ~1% system, ~97% idle with 'wait' solid at 0%
On the notebook, if I run hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda the CPU #'s for user and system remain high but the wait # drops to zero and stays there.
I don't think all this HD activity could be good for my machine, and I know I find it very annoying.  If anyone could help me stop all the HD accesses and understand the high CPU usage I would appreciate it.

I loaded lsof and frankly it scared me.  It listed what looked like a couple hundred files and I didn't know exactly how to use that information.
Then I tried laptop-mode-tools.  The man pages didn't sound too promising since it uses, among other things, hdparm, which I already tried with mixed results.  I gave it a try anyway and right out of the box, with no configuration, it worked.  HD access when idle dropped to essentially none, the drive spins down and the cooling fan runs much less frequently.
So far all I have changed in the config file are the HD idle timeouts.  The default of 5 seconds was starting and stopping the HD too often so I changed that to 20 seconds for now.
Whatever laptop-mode did to stop the 5-second HD accesses the effect persists even if I run 'laptop_mode stop' and '/etc/rc.d/laptop-mode stop'.  When I get the time I should be able to use 'laptop_mode status' and laptop-mode.conf settings to determine exactly what the magic bullet was.
Thanks, lucke.  I never would have tried laptop-mode on my own because I thought it only duplicated functionality that I already had with hdparm and powernowd.

The problem is not your code, but the stock JMF DirectSound audio renderer.
The audio renderer has its DirectAudio buffer hard-coded to hold 2 seconds of sound. Therefore, if you have any lag for any reason from the audio card driver when sound is starting up, you will have an audio delay of up to two seconds.
My company had to make heavy modifications to the original JMF audio renderer. We set up a 300 millisecond buffer and also introduced code to handle buffer starvation, etc., etc. I would suggest you get the JMF source code and check this out for yourself.
    Good luck.

  • High CPU load when opening js file

Hi, whenever I am opening a particular js file, my CPU load is rising too high and it remains high even when I close Dreamweaver (somehow the process continues to run and I have to terminate it with the task manager).
This problem only happens when I open the particular javascript file. Sometimes some lines are marked with errors when there are in fact none. This javascript file contains jquery code which mostly uses the "on" function (used approx 50 times). I am thinking the problem is either related to jquery 1.9 or maybe to the "on" function.
    Update:
I found the problem. I had something like this $(this).on().on().on().on().on().on().on().on().on().on().on().on(); which was overloading my cpu. The solution is to split it.

Thank you for sharing your solution with us. Much appreciated!
    Thanks,

  • High CPU Usage when Idle

    Hello Crew!!!
I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!
I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

It is not "normal" and cannot be "normal". Programmers like that must be fired immediately.
It's like iTunes - scroll cover flow fast enough, and you can get memory usage up to 1GB (!!?) which is even not fully returned after you stop scrolling.
And those people are making jokes about Windows? Yes, it is ugly but when they have blunders like this, at least they correct them. Just returned from the shop, wanted to buy 27" iMac. 3.06GHz model was running Parallels with Vista, processor usage continuously like 3-5%. iMac was cooking - if I put my face 0.5m from the screen, I could feel the heat!
I don't know about iTunes... some of the recent Mac apps (Safari, iTunes) are so slow/inefficient I stay away from them. However, Logic's CPU use when idle is completely normal for a "real time" application that starts approx 20 threads minimum. All DAW application do this to some extent, some more than Logic.
What's not normal is how much heat the new Macbook, MBP and iMacs are generating, the folks over on the Macbook forums are starting to see heat related failures.
As a side note, Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows XP_Professional, that's saying something as XP is a good real time DAW OS. After Vista I didn't expect much but Win_7 is a nice OS.

  • High cpu usage when idle / x230

    Hi all,
I have an i5 x230, win8 pro installed on a crucial m4 msata ssd, 16gb of ram. I lately noticed a sharp drop in battery life. I believe this is due by high cpu utilization when idle, which I see from task manager, and shows the System process hovering above 30% cpu utilization. This goes down when I restart, but comes up again after a while, possibly when coming back from sleep.
Does anyone have any idea about this? I tried to search the knowledge base a bit, but nothing came up.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Indeed it was risdxc64.sys; I used process explorer to find out. I uninstalled the win 8 driver, and installed back the win 7 driver, and CPU usage is normalized.
Thanks for pointing in the right direction!

  • 20% CPU load when idle, 27" iMac corei7 2,8Ghz

    Hi every body
When I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit on Boot Camp 3.1, the system uses 20% CPU when idle.
I've tried to figure out what's causing the system load, and so far no luck. The task manager show these processes using CPU:
    SYSTEM : 9%
    DCPs : 6%
    csrss.exe: 3%
    Interrupts: 4%
The system is a fresh install, no programs installed, except Boot Camp. Even before I installed the Boot Camp drivers the CPU load was 20% when idle.
Has anyone had the same problem? And have you found a solution?
Message was edited by: Rune Månsson

If you have not already, you may want to also post your question in the Book Camp category
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
The system is a fresh install, no programs installed, except Boot Camp. Even before I installed the Boot Camp drivers the CPU load was 20% when idle.
If you have not booted into Windows, anything that happens under Mac OS X is something unrelated. In this case, it may be Spotlight indexing connected drives or some other background maintenance process. Leave the iMac running for a while and check to see if the CPU load is still 20%.

  • ITunes load CPU when idle

    Good day!
Today I watched another surprise from wonderful iTunes - it consumes 13% of Core i7 CPU i. e. resources from the whole processor thread when idle! I wasn't doing anything at that moment, didn't listen music and so on. There were also no messages in status bar - just the silent stupid apple.
Do you have any ideas about iTunes was doing and how to prevent this annoying behaviour?
    Message was edited by: usamytch

OK... so I uninstalled iTunes 10.1.2 along with Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, and Apple Application Support. I then installed iTunes version 10.0 and I didn't experience the problem at all. Just to be sure I then uninstalled everything again and reinstalled 10.1.2 and I again experienced the problem. So... I uninstalled 10.1.2 and went back to 10.0. I'll stay there until Apple fixes the issue in 10.1.2.
However, I do still have a problem. Version 10.0 will not open my library that was updated with 10.1.2. I know I can import all my albums back into iTunes. However... I will lose all my playlists if I rebuild the library from scratch.
Is there any way to get my playlists that were updated under 10.1.2 into a 10.0 library? I have all the files .itl and .itdb files from my 10.1.2 library.
    Thanks in advance.

  • [Solved] High load average even when idle after update

    Hello arch fellows!
I have a Dell Inspiron N4110 intel i5 4gb ram. I think it is a decent laptop and should run Arch Linux pretty well, right? Well, it does until I run 'pacman -Syu'. After the update, the load average gets over 1.00 even when idle. It hardly gets under 0.40. Before updating, the average is under 0.10 most times. The command top doesn't show me anything. All the processes are practically 0%. It seems to me the problem would be the kernel, am I right? But I tried the fallback option when booting but it is the same.
Does anybody have an idea of what could be the problem? I appreciate any help.

Thanks for the reply. It was really a kernel problem. I downgraded it to an older version and it looks normal now
