Thinkpad X201 Screen

Hi, first time posting, need some help asap.
I've busted up the screen on my X201 (dropped a mirror on it) and am looking to repair it on the cheap myself; what screens can I buy to replace it? I've noticed some X201i screens on eBay, but I don't know the difference between X201s and X201is, so have no idea if those screens would work.
What screens will fit my poor broken Thinkpad?
Thank you.

Good day and welcome to the community.
Sorry your having difficulty.
Please have a look at your hardware manual:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x200_x200s_x200si_x201_x201i_x201s_hmm_en...
Starting on manual page 236, you'll see the listing for the X201 WXGA LCD panels. I believe that the WXGA+ panels were limited to the X201s and I don't know if they're interchangeable into the X201.
You can use your machine's type-model number (MTM) to pinpoint which panel FRU P/N to search for a replacement.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

  • ThinkPad X201 vs new model X series??

    Hi,
could you please give me your opinion.
if you buy new thinkpad, would you go for X201 or new model X series? almost same price.
as i am classic ThinkPad fanatic i love x201 but price is high considering it is old model.
    what would be your idea?
    thanks

Depends what you're looking for in a laptop.
    Screen:
    X201 has a 16:10 screen. X220 and later have 16:9 screens.
X201 can retrofit a ddecent AFFS screen. X220 and later have an okay IPS screen from factory.
    Performance:
X201 through X230 have decently clocked full power CPUs. X240 has a bit weaker but still okay CPU. Everything afterwards is low-power.
X201 to X220 also significantly increased integrated GPU performance. X220 to X230 to X240 are modest increases.
    Storage:
X201 can only take a primary drive. X220 and later can take a primary plus mSATA/NGFF SSD.
    Wifi Card:
X201 and X220 can have the BIOS whitelist removed for wifi cards. X230 and later cannot.
    Battery Life:
X201 to X220 is the biggest jump in battery life. X220 to X230 to X240 are relatively minor increases. X220 and later can take a battery slice too.
    Keyboard:
X201 and X220 have classic keyboards. X230 and later have chiclet keyboards.

  • Trying To Create Bootable Diagnostics for ThinkPad X201

I'm working on a ThinkPad X201 that spontaneously shuts down - no warning messages, no blue screens; the system just shuts off. Not only does it happen while using Windows (that's Windows 7 Pro, 32-bit), but it also did it while I was running memtest86, a generic memory diagnostic.
I've also tried SpeedFan to see if the computer is experiencing thermal shutdown, but SpeedFan has yet to register a temperature in excess of 50C, well below the thermal shutdown threshhold on most computers.
That said, SpeedFan isn't the be-all and end-all of thermal diagnostic tools, and irrespective of what it says, the computer did seem to be blowing very hot air the second time I ram memtest86. Before I go to the trouble (and my customer's expense) of taking the computer apart, making sure the fan and cooling channels are clear and replacing the thermal compound on the processor and other chips that the heat sink sits on top of, I'd like to run Lenovo's bootable diagnostics.
I loaned out my external optical drive, so for the sake of expedience, I've been trying to make a bootable diagnostic flash drive. Lenovo provides a utility for this, but I can't get it to work. Per the instructions, I downloaded the ISO file and the bootable flash drive utility to a folder, and named them diag-image.iso and bootable-generator-10.exe, respectively. I put a USB flash drive (a 32GB SanDisk Cruzer, USB 2.0 version) in a USB port, and Windows assigns it drive letter E:. From an elevated command prompt, I change to that folder, and run the command:
    bootable-generator-10.exe --create -l lenodiags -u e -f diag-image.iso
All I get back is the following error message:
    Validate bootable
    Failed to verify flags.
The bootable in E:\ is not valid.
    Can anyone assist with this?

The method for creating a Mountain Lion flash drive only required you to clone the installer disk within the application to the flash drive. Job over. No need for passwords. With Mavericks Apple provided a way to do it because the old method used with Lion and Mountain Lion doesn't work for the Mavericks installer.
Would have been nicer had they provided an easy application to do it, but they did not. So it requires the Terminal, they more or less hid the fact it was even there, and they provide no instructions for its use by less experienced users.

No. I just got two of my X201 on my side and none of them have a gap in the bezels. And one of these two was a guinea pig for a panel swap so I ended removing and re-installing the bezel too many times. Still sits perfectly flat and with no flex or gap at all:

  • W540 stuck on ThinkPad splash screen

I've got W540 (32GB RAM, 500GB HDD) running Windows 7.1 64bit that is constantly getting stalled at the ThinkPad splash screen during powerup.
It will often stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen.
Other times it will stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen with the "To interrupt normal startup, pess Enter" message displayed.
I've seen other entries that reference this issue with:
    - using a SSD, I'm a standard HDD.
    - a broken USB port.  Mine all look OK (is there a way to actually test them?)
I've updated to the latest Bios and reset the Bios defaults with no change.
I've run the hardware diagnostic tests and found no errors.
When I say "stall" on the splash screens I sometimes find if I leave it alone long enough (maybe 5+ minutes) it will continue to the normal Windows boot up.
This is the 2nd W540 out of a pool of laptops to display symptoms similar to this.
Anyone got information on what may cause a stall at the ThinkPad splash screen?
    Thanks.

Not knowing your exact set up, but KNOWING that this is a blind black box with no activity light like a normal workstation, you need to do workarounds.
Normally, on my older workstation, I could see the HD light blink and the rate would give me an inkling of the process.
The WORKAROUND: we now need to calibrate your computer clock to your watch, or use a cell phone time keeper which would already be synced if the W540 is connected to the WiFi (no switch so the W540 has to be connected, unless there is no access point).  As an aside, I have found that when there are large MS updates, like last Tuesday, or other such WiFi connected updated, the compute also hangs with the user having NO KNOWLEDGE that the WiFi is talking / or calling home to some cloud device.
Back to the workaround: Boot the system, and when there appears to be a crash or hang in the sequence, note the time of the 'event' and also note the time when it appears to restart.  Once properly booted, and I cannot tell you how often this has happened to my W540, check the even times in the [Event Viewer].  Too long to explain, Google the term "Win 7 Event Viewer", or check this:
    MS Help - Event Viewer
Then find out where the computer chokes and restarts by checking the time in the events and the cause.  These are i/o routines which the Lenovo Gods have decide to shield us from such WORKSTATION task.
FWIW, often I get <Program Not Responding>, when in fact it is performing a numbers intensive task.... yet I cannot tell what is happening as there is no i/o light. Usually unlocks when the task is finished, which may be what is happening on your system.  You need to find out the task that is  causing the wait.
Odd, the Lenovo Gaming machines Y50 have these lights, albeit atrophied:  see lower 4 indicator lights....

  • Could not get Crucial M500 SSD to work in Thinkpad X201

I have a ThinkPad X201 running Window 7, I have not make any changes to the computer hence all the hardware are original.Except when I recently bought a Crucial M500 SSD, First I use MiniTool to clone the HD to the new SSD. After cloning, I install the SSD into the X201. Window appear to boot up normally with no error message. But soon I notice the Window is not working correctly. For example Window no longer recognize Microsoft published program. For a simple thing like pressing Del to delete a file. A UAC warning will come on to asked if I will allow delete, exe from an unknown publisher to make changes to the computer. Then I tried to repair window by downloading the Window 7 ISO file from microsoft site and proceed to do an upgrade of Window, The upgrading process took quite a while. When everything appear to have finished an error message came on to say "Window setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware". So I gave up on cloning and try to make a clean install of Wondow on the SSD by using the Recovery DVD that came with the computer. The installation process gone through but at the end it ask me to put in the supplementary disk which did not come with the computer. Hence I could not complete the process. I am at a total loss, what can I do next to get it to work?

thanks. I used Minitool to make the cloning which can be booted up from a CD/DVD. I will try to clone with the target in the laptop as suggested and let you know the result.
Crucial normally supplies Apricorn EZ Gig software with their drives. If you don't have it, check Crucial's website and there should be a download available. It should work when it detects a Crucial drive connected.
I didn't understand that you said you were going to order an external enclosure. How did you do your clone with Minitool? If you were using an adapter cable, you should also be able to use it to connect the HDD externally.
The cloning software should take care of everything for you. The cloned disk should be a seamless, plug-and-play version of the original. You should not have to fix anything afterwards. Just boot it and start using it directly.

  • Thinkpad X201 - problem with microphone and speakers

    Hi,
My thinkpad X201 is a professional computer set up with Windows XP. Although I cannot check, I am reasonably sure that the computer was installed with the latest drivers and is regularly updated to the latest SP and patches.
My problem is the following: in Volume Control window, when both the general "Volume Control" and "Mic in Volume" are un-muted and maxed-up, a feedback loop quickly builds. When I decrease the volumes of both to a lower values, I can actually hear myself speak with a slight delay. The same phenomenon can be heard if I use the internal mic or if I plug in a microphone.
So, it seems that the (internal or external) mic input is constantly sent to the speakers. This makes any recording with this computer very painful.
Did anybody experience this problem? Is there a solution?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks

Ok, I've fixed the Radio thing, I installed the Nvida drivers from the Nvida site, and then had to select the aux input twice. Still havn't fixed the Mic issue, any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Please help...
Have been using my T430 as usual this morning, all running fine...then...battery died while using it, so went to get the charger, now have plugged in and powered back on, and it will only get to the "ThinkPad" loading screen. It won't get to Windows.
Note. it doesn't "freeze" at the ThinkPad screen, it keeps cycling through it, as if it's going to load or shutdown, but then it comes back to the ThinkPad screen, over and over again.

  • X61s: lost Thinkpad welcome screen

I just got an L2440p external monitor to use with my X61s (and T60p.) After messing about with this combination I no longer get the standard Thinkpad welcome screen when I power up the X61s. I suspect there is some conflict between the built-in Windows screen property settings, Intel's GMA driver/applet and various ThinkVantage software like Presentation Director. Toggling Fn+F7 doesn't seem to help. The X61s runs Vista Business.
Any ideas on how to get the Thinkpad welcome screen back?

Either way. During power-on the screen remains blank all the way until Windows Login. Even the standard Windows boot progress bar is absent.
     > what do you have set as the default boot display device?   this can be accessed in the BIOS
That's the problem. I can't get into the BIOS because I can't see the ThinkPad screen. (Well actually I can, by pressing the ThinkVantage button, but I can't see what comes up thereafter.)
BTW my T60p and earlier ThinkPads all had a Configuration Utility where among other things I could forcedisplay settings. I notice this utility is AWOL on the X61s.
Edit: My error. I had the L2440p powered off but not disconnected. After I disconnected the VGA cable the Welcome screen came up on the X61s and I was able to go into BIOS Config to set Display to "Both."  Now if I power-on with no external display the Welcome screen comes up on the X61s. But if the L2440p is connected, even though I set "Both" the Welcome screen comes up only on the L2440p. What's going on?

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u and ThinkPad x201 Tablet Creating Recovery Media

    Hi Lenovo Customer Support,
    ThinkPad s230u( model number: 3347CTO) - Window 8 Pro.
Before I start using my Laptop, I want to create a Recovery Media as is shown when installed with all partitions. Meaning if I format all contents of Laptop I want a recovery Media brings back computer as I go it in the first place include all partitions. By default there are five hidden partition and one ntfs.
What is the procedure how to Create a Recovery Media? I heard only Flash Recovery exist for Window 8.
Also I have Window 8 Pro but when I tried this link procedure http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Create-Win-8-recovery-media-in-ThinkPad-Thi... I saw only Window 8 option and even then it reboot and did not work.
Also I did Flash Recovery and Took Faster with USB 3.0 Flash around 10 min around 16GB Space
Is it possible to do CD Recovery too ?
    ThinkPad x201 Tablet(Model Number: 30933PG) - Wundow 7 Pro
Can you do Flash Recovery Media and CD Recovery Media under Window 7 Pro  Enviro.
If you upgrade Hard drive to 1T and RAM to 16 G RAM  , Can you Still do the Recovery Media?
What is the Procedure to successfully create Recovery Media.
    Thanks.
    saad

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • Thinkpad X201 usually suddenly shuts down!

    Dear all!
I have two problems with my Thinkpad x201.
1/ When I use it with battery and charging then I plug adapter out, it suddenly shuts down. I take it to my office or repair service and do the same but it not suddenly shuts down.
2/ it has been running fine but always suddenly shuts down in an instant, as if somebody turned off the power switch when temperature CPU up to about 55 degree C (using battery only or adapter or adapter + battery). But I take it to my office to use or take to repair service, it not suddenly shuts down. => Use it at home suddenly shuts down when CPU up to about 55 degree C. Use at office or somewhere else not suddenly shuts down whatever temperature CPU up to about 55 or 60-70!
I find some topic talk about this problem but haven't got any good solutions. I would like hearing all idea. Thanks all!

Had the same issue with the X1 carbon. send it in as it likely has a bad motherboard.

I have, to begin with rebooted several times, removed the battery, reseated the HDD...
A previous issue that has been intermittant is the USP not recognising an external HDD.  It would always recognise on reboot but not initially as on other home and office computers.   This issue began in the past two weeks.
My thought is HDD controller but I am not familiar with the T500 architecture to know its place in the world.
I have done initial searches here [and will do more] but right now i have a dead T500

    **bleep**, good call.
I peeked at the three USB ports and noted that one [closest to the RJ45] not only did not have the block on it but the pins were bent.  I used a small screwdriver to pull all the pins up, off ground [#4 was on the ground] and the machine booted.
I assume at some point a USB device "borrowed" the little block in the connection, but we kept plugging in the extrenal drive, sometimes seating well, other times not.
We are now up and flying.
    Thanks.
