ThinkPad X220 battery problem

Hi, I own a 2 year old ThinkPad X220. Till a few days ago, I used to get 3 hours battery backup on my laptop. A couple of days ago, my laptop battery dropped to 5% very soon. Then, it would charge upto 100% in 15 miinutes. I tried to do a battery gauge reset using Lenovo power management tool. Since then, my battery has been on 0%. I tried to do the trick of removing battery and AC power and pressing the power button for 10 seconds, but it didn't work.Since my laptop runs fine on AC, I dont think it is the fault of the power cord. Also, I run a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7, so it is unlikely to be an OS problem. Now, when I plug in the AC adapter with battery, the charging light falshes green thrice and after about 5-6 seconds, it flashes orange twice and green once, after which the light goes off.Is my battery really dead or is it my system's fault? Please advise me what to do.Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi
1. What does Lenovo Power Manager say about battery health, status?
2. What value of the count cycles does the battery have (PM shows in the battery tab)?
3. Do you know about battery recall Lenovo program? There is a chance your battery is affected:

  • Thinkpad W530 Battery Problem

    Hi everyone,
The little latch on my thinkpad W530 is broken, resulting the battery to be loose sometimes. My thinkpad warranty is still active, and I want to know if lenovo can provide me with a new battery.
Here is a picture of the battery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Chances are if you don't have accidental warranty, they won't replace it.
I broke the same latch on my W520, and it doesn't seem to cause issues other than the battery being a little bit loose. I just used a bit of tape to attach the battery to the machine.

  • Thinkpad x220 display problems very bright

I just bought my laptop in March 2012 and I've run into this problem 3 times since then.
All of a sudden, the display will become very bright, oversaturated, for every application that I have open.   The pixel sizes remain the same, and most of the type is legible, but because of the oversaturation, the font is a bit more difficult to read/discern.
I've restarted and that usually takes care of it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?  I worry given my laptop is new and I had terrible problems with my previous Lenovo ideapad (large vertical white stripes took over my display, obstructing view of whatever application was open). I swore to never by an Ideapad again.
    thanks!

    hi lenovolinda,
Thank you for your post welcome to the community,
Based from my understanding of your post it appears that it could be a configuration issue. You may want to check your Bios version to see if it has been updated the to lates, which is v1.29. Should it is lower than the bios version i have shown over here, i would recommend you update your Bios first to ensure that your system is ruuning all latest drivers and bios.
You can update the bios and all other drivers by hitting the thinkvantage blue key found on the top your keyboard or alternatively you down the drivers from.

Please do let me know of the update.

acording to the MTM your system has an i-7 CPU, it should therefore have USB 3.0. Please try installing the system and ensure you only use the USB 2.0 ports.
    Hope this helps

  • ThinkPad Edge 13" sudden BATTERY problem

Hi, i am starting to be desperate, therefore i registered myself here. Let me explain my story.
My computer is now almost 2 years old and I have less than 14 days till the warranty expires (I am from Europe), but I'd like to avaid this, because i really need my computer now, not after 30 days, which is by law designated time till which it must be returned to me back. I did not have to use my computer outside home for about 3 month, so I was using that during that period as desktop computer, where i set in lenovo power manager, that all energy should be taken from the AC adaptor letting the battery to deplete itself in its own pace. But i have taken my computer to the libraries lately and i have experienced sudden battery problems. Let me describe them in order as it happened.
    1) battery shows that that it has more than lets say 20% of power, but windows power manager warns me that battery capacity is in reality 6% and i need to use my AC adaptor now. after second even lenovo power manager recognize the fact that battery is almost depleted. first i did not pay attention, i thought it was some temporary bug and it will not be repeated again.
    2) unfortunatelly it was, therefore i updated lenovo power manager to current version (6.11), which realized that current battery capacity was not 54Wh (as before update), but 47Wh. Therefore I resetted battery gauge statting that battery capacity is now slightly over 51Wh. For couple of days everything was as it should (probably, because i always connected AC adaptor around 10% of remaining battery).
    3) now my problem appeared again, though battery depleted naturally and slowly to 10%, after that windows power manager popped again showing, that battery is 6% and I need to use my AC adaptor. after connecting to electricity whole W7 froze for a while. I rather restarted system after which I realized, that battery info is wrong again - original capacity of battery since i have this laptop was over 62Wh, now is slightly over 57Wh (this is something new i have not realized this 2 days ago, when i was doing the reset, and I'd bet i happened just now) and current battery capacity rose back to 54Wh (as I said before, after the last reset it was just 51Wh).
I attemted to do Battery test through Toolbox, but system refuse to run this test (even after resterting system) stating "Cannot run".
For a while i thought i have this problem which requires updating battery firmware: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnose-and-fix/detail.page?DocID=HT003431
but FRU number of my laptop is 42T4813 and is not in the list of batteries requireing update.
Sorry for long text, and quality of English (I am not native speaker), any help is welcome. Thank you in advance.
PS: i always install updates throught System update, my BIOS should be therefore up to date, i also Lenovo Power manager does not offer any update for battery firmware.

After todays restart original baterry capacity is restored back to 62+Wh, But current capacity is still 54Wh, higher than after last battery reset. I am upgrading to higher version of Power Manager.

  • [SOLVED (Arch is a great community)] Thinkpad x220 does not power off

My thinkpad x220 does not power off, it goes through the whole shutdown process as expected until reaching the last step where it displays "> POWER OFF" and just sits there until the battery is empty or I force the power off by using the power button.
I don't know what's wrong or where to start looking for clues.
The same happens when rebooting, it displays "> REBOOTING" and sits there.
Occasionally on reboot attempts I have additional messages from iwlwifi:
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Queue 9 stuck for 10000 ms.
    iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Current read_ptr 28 write_ptr 29

iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Unable to initialize device

Not sure if this could be related but my thinkpad has the particularity of having a renice x3 mSATA SSD that I installed myself.

This is what you're looking for : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33872
I've had this issue before, also on my X220. The solution was to remove the e1000e driver before shutdown. I've placed a command that does something like "rmmod e1000e" in a configuration file that runs it on shutdown, and it fixed the problem. I forget where this file is though... Hopefully someone else can fill the gap =]

  • BSOD when installing Windows XP on ThinkPad x220

    Hi,
I have just bought a ThinkPad x220 (4293-AA6) with no OS installed. I am trying to install Windows XP (32-bit), but have not yet been successful.
I have carefully followed section in the User Guide called "Installing Windows XP", but this has not worked for me. In summary, the procedure I followed was:
In BIOS, set "Serial ATA (SATA)" to "AHCI",
Set "UEFI/Legacy Boot" to "Both" or "Legacy Only" (makes no difference to my problem)
Boot from Win XP SP2 CD
Press F6 when prompted, put the Lenovo "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver drivers" in floppy drive, and select "Intel MobileExpress Chipset SATA AHCI Controller". Drivers were extracted from this file: this file
    Continue the installation
The result is a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) just after the setup screen says "Setup is starting Windows", with the error message:
    "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xf78d2524,0xc0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)"
    Other things I have tried:
Followed the alternative procedure outlined in the User Guide, under "If you do not have a diskette drive..."
Updated the BIOS from 1.15 to 1.17
Ran memtest86+ (resulted in no errors)
Tried the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver" from the Intel website rather than the Lenovo website
Selected the "Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller" instead of the other one when installing the drivers
Tried using a WinXP SP3 CD instead of SP2
    Formatted the disk using diskpart
Installed Ubuntu 11.04 to the harddrive (successfully!!) then tried installing Windows XP again
But I always get the same BSOD.
I have also tried installing Windows 7 (64-bit), which also failed! It booted into the installation program, but then it stopped and said it couldn't find a driver for a CD/DVD drive. After installing the appropriate 64-bit Lenovo IRST driver and rebooting, this resulted in the following Blue Screen of Death: "STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003,..."
Is anyone able to help me with getting Windows (XP or even 7) installed? Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, and I'm happy to provide more information/tests if needed.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roy

Oh, perhaps I should emphasise that this X220 model comes with the "160GB Solid State Drive". Perhaps that needs a different driver or something...??
SSDs are Advanced Format disks, which XP does not know anything about.  Please read the white paper which can be found here.....

  • Thinkpad X220: bad wlan connection when docked and lid closed

    Dear forum
I use a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. I have no trouble with the wlan connection when i use the notebook alone. The wlan connection is also stable when i use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid open. But when I use the notebook plugged in the dockingstation with the lid closed my wlan connection drops regularely to about 2 Mbps and gets very unstable.
The ThinkPad uses the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wlan network controller:
    $ lspci | grep 6205
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
The network controller uses the iwlwifi driver, that comes with the current linux-firmware package:
    $ pacman -Ss linux-firmware
    core/linux-firmware 20150206.17657c3-1 [Installiert]
    Firmware files for Linux
I didn't change any options of the kernel module, everything runs in default mode:
    $ modinfo -p iwlwifi
swcrypto:using crypto in software (default 0 [hardware]) (int)
11n_disable:disable 11n functionality, bitmap: 1: full, 2: disable agg TX, 4: disable agg RX, 8 enable agg TX (uint)

    nvm_file:NVM file name (charp)
    uapsd_disable:disable U-APSD functionality (default: Y) (bool)
    bt_coex_active:enable wifi/bt co-exist (default: enable) (bool)
    led_mode:0=system default, 1=On(RF On)/Off(RF Off), 2=blinking, 3=Off (default: 0) (int)

    power_level:default power save level (range from 1 - 5, default: 1) (int)
fw_monitor:firmware monitor - to debug FW (default: false - needs lots of memory) (bool)
At first I thought, the problem could be caused by the KDE power saving settings. I changed the settings, so nothing happens when I close the lid (no hibbernation or screen lock or something like that), but without success (the wlan connection is still unstable under the described circumstances).
Also dmesg shows nothing that points out a problem (as far as I can see):

how about checking both your wired and wireless nic drivers in device manager to make sure that the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox on the power management tab is deselected.

  • ThinkPad X220 UltraNav Settings Keep Resetting to Default on Reboot

    Hello,
I use a ThinkPad X220 and until the last week I barely had any problem with it.  The UltraNav driver settings did occasionally reset themselves in the past, but that was only when I updated the driver or used Windows Update.  Since last week, however, I found the settings reset every time I shut down my computer.
I checked the solutions on other threads (which normally pertained to other systems), but to no avail.  I even tried installing the Synaptics driver instead of the UltraNav driver, but I encountered the same problem: the settings kept resetting for the other driver the same way it did the Ultranav.
I updated all the drivers for the machine as of this morning, and still there is no difference.
Could anyone help me out here?  I am unable to use the TrackPoint unless it is set at its lightest touch, and it is quite inconvenient to have the settings reset every time I boot up the computer.

I assume you are using Audigy 2 something, it has a terrible tendency to forget setting (not just THX) to date there is no sure fire fix. It just appears to be poor software which seems to conflict with most everything. In the soundblster forum this is a common problem.

  • T61 Battery problems

    Hi,
I've been having battery problems for the past week with my T61. Although it registers as being 80% charged and the status is 'plugged in' it also says that it's 'not charging'. After this began happening I did a clean wipe and installed Windows 7 and it's still ocurring. My laptop is now pretty much unusable except for when it's plugged in.
My X31 which is over five years old still runs... battery and all (even if the battery does only last for 20 minutes). What's with this battery? The laptop is only 1.5 years old!
    Thanks
P.S. Since I'm running win7 I don't have access to most of the ibm toolsuite except for access connections. They don't seem to have provided a new version of the battery management utils.

I've booted into linux with the same issues where there weren't any before and this issue occurred on XP-Pro 32-bit _before_ the windows 7 installation.
I've updated the drivers and got the Lenovo Windows 7 power manager. It's giving me the same error that other people have reported here "A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged". I am at around 200 cycles. There are also a whole lot of people here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T61-9-Cell-battery-failure-FRU-42T4511/m...) who have experienced the same issue with the same battery part (i.e. sudden battery failure... no gradual 'fading' as is typical with lithium ions)
Btw, I have the 42T4511 battery and I am four months out of warranty. >< Even with the extended warranty they apparently only support batteries for a year.
It seems pointless to shell out for another battery if it's just going to die in another year and a half. I paid the premium for the T61 and got my old company to buy them because of my experience with the IBM X31 (still going strong btw), but it seems as if quality has gone out the window along with the change in ownership.
I'm getting an MBP the next time around ><

  • X1 Battery Problem

Hallo i am from Austria and i am using a  Thinkpad X1 with 3 Year Bring in Warranty
I am not using it that much its 2 Years old now with only 55 Battery Load Cycles but the Battery only got a little bit more than 50% of its starting capacity an shows me status bad.
I alway used the lenovo energy manager with the battery live saving profile ! i also did the battery recalibration and have got the newest battery firmware but no change.
How could that be with a battery that lenovo specifies with around 1000 Load Cycles.  So i wanted to change the Battery - but for the X1 the Battery is a Fru so i am not able to change it myself.
Therefore i contacted the lenovo service they told me that eventhough my X1 has still 1 Year warranty left - i have to pay for the change as the battery has only 1 Year warranty ? but they do not tell me how much i have to pay only that i should send it in an then i get a estimate of cost.
But the best is if i do not accept this estimate of cost i have to pay 130 Euros to get the unrepaired X1 back ??
Is this really the so often praised Lenovo Service - whats the 3 Year Warranty worth if i have to pay for the battery change eventough the x1 is still in warranty und you don't let customers change the battery themselves.
Further more you charge 130 Euros only for an estimate fo cost and what gets me angry most how could a battery specified for 1000 Load Cycles loose 50% of its Capacity after 55 Load Cycles and the Customer should pay for it ??

Early batch of the Thinkpad rapidcharge battery had some issues. So what you are reporting is not a strange problem. I had to replace my X1 and X1 Carbon batteries. This may also explain why Lenovo no longer uses the RapidCharge batteries anymore, because the technology behind it, is inherently unreliable.

I have updated my BIOS and power manager to overcome the problem.
Recently, I was on a holiday and I turned off my laptop for one week. Before I turned off my laptop, the battery gauge shows 100% of battery capacity. Today, when I turn on my laptop, the battery gauge shows 80% of battery capacity, even though I did not use the laptop for seven consecutive days. The power drains is not as excessive as the previous one as I described in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/ThinkPad-E455-Excessive-Battery-Drains-When-Power-Off/m-p/2105732 but this problem really bothers me. Is there something wrong with the battery? Or perhaps some other configuration? FYI, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

At this point I have to assume one of very few possibilities: 1. The 1.17 BIOS fix for power to the USB ports doesn't work, 2. The Computrace code in the BIOS is waking the laptop up daily to call its manufacturer's server, or 3. Something else on the motherboard remains powered and causes the leakage. Our E555 isn't left powered off for long so we haven't noticed the problem. To eliminate the above possibilities, you could try removing the battery after switching the E455 off and replacing it when you need to switch the laptop back on. This would tell you if the battery discharges even when removed from the laptop. If it does, the battery is probably faulty, lithium batteries are usually good at retaining their charge.I hope that the newer BIOS version will be released soon. As for number 2, what does "The Computrace code in the BIOS is waking up the laptop..." mean? Can I disable it? It will be good if nothing is waking up my laptop when it is off.
I am considering to remove the built-in battery (ThinkPad E455 only has one battery, and it is built-in), but the user manual says that the battery removal should be done by a technician. I am afraid that removing the battery myself can cause a damage and violating the warranty (my laptop is less than 6 months old). If there is a user manual or videos or anything helpful about removing the built-in battery for ThinkPad E455, perhaps I will try it.
