Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly and sticker-peeling (it's still good for another 3 months)?

Oh and lastly, when plugged into AC power, pressing the power button will cause the green battery light to flash around three times again. So it's clearly registering something. But why no spinning fan, no BIOS error codes, and no life in the LCD screen?

  • Thinkpad Yoga won't power up anymore

I was using my Thinkpad Yoga today (Quicken) and then suddenly, the screen went blank, the fan started making noise, and that was it. Can't power it up or down.
I've had it 3 months. I was watching 24 on it last night. Since the battery is inaccessible, there was no way to turn it off. I called Microsoft Tech Support and they were useless I took it into the Aventura Mall Microsoft Store but they said they can't fix it they can only send it out which will take weeks.
I have the Complete Care plan, mind you.
I tried unscrewing the bottom myself. I still couldn't get it off, but the fan noise at stopped. I tried hooking up to power and turning it on, but it still won't turn on.
Help please, other than taking it to Microsoft Store who said it will take weeks to repair.

Good news. I went back to the Microsoft Store and met with someone different. He looked at my computer and said since it had only been 3 months, he'd swap it out with a new one, swap out my hard disc, and restart my Complete Care warranty. So that was great! He did it right in front of me. I told him the other guy the other day said they couldn't do that and he said he'd have a talk with him. They don't know what caused the other problem, but said it seemed related to it not holding a charge.
Also, he said he was able to remove the warped screw because he had another, slightly bigger, screwdriver.

  • My thinkpad t60 won't power on

Just this morning, i was just surfing the internet and listening to music then all of sudden my laptop blackout. Only the battery led has lights on. After that, i removed the battery then reconnect the ac adaptor. All that happen is that the hard drive light and battery light flashes once for a second then nothing happens at all. If the battery is connected, and i connect the adapter, only green battery light flashes constant but it still doesnt turn on.

Just to point out something, although slang terms don't have any official meaning, the term "bricked" is usually used to refer to a unit that has become about as useful as a "brick", but without an actual part failing. The most common way this happens is a failed bios update, where you end up with a computer that is mechnically and electrically sound, but cannot boot because the very basic software instructions used to tell the machine how to boot is damaged, and the only way to recover is to manually reburn the chip. A board that fails due to hardware failure isn't usually referred to as "bricked", but the end result is a unit as useful as a brick either way.
The advice given so far is very good, not much I can add really, so just confirm you have a known good power supply going into the unit, then remove everything you can, drives, cards, etc, as many times a failed part can prevent boot. You will need at least one good ram chip installed to boot, so if you have two installed, try one of them at a time in each slot. If you have only one ram chip (sodimm), then it would be best to substitute a known working sodimm to make sure that's not the cause. You may find a PC builder that has a ram testing machine where you could simply bring the chip in and ask if they would test it. Many will gladly test your ram for free.
If you cannot get the unit to post even with all drives/cards removed and known good ram and power supply, then you can safely assume you have a failed system board and proceed accordingly.

When I plug the power adapter onto the jack of the laptop, whether with or without the battery, the Ethernet port momentarily lights up for a second and then dies out. That's all. Is there a short circuit in the motherboard or is the motherboard dead?

  • ThinkPad X230 in Hand, First Thoughts Review

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.
Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5” screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won’t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.
    Keyboard Comparison with X220
Let’s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to show exactly what the visual differences are so we’ll show that first and then talk about the perceived usability differences:
ThinkPad X220 and X230 keyboard Comparison
The first concern I had was whether the spacing of the keys was the same or different enough to cause a problem getting used to the X230 keyboard.  I was also concerned that the travel distance and feel of the keys would be different.  Rest assured, despite the very different look, the keyboard is very similar in feel to previous generations and the typing differences were really only noticeable to me when I had both the X220 and X230 next to each other and I could test the difference.  Here is what I found to be different in terms of feel, at least as far as my perception goes:
The X230 keys seem to have a slightly lighter touch, you don’t have to push quite as hard to register a keystroke
The X230  key surface area is slightly larger, I don’t have calipers to measure this exactly, but you can see it’s the case.  This is partly why Lenovo is claiming the new keyboard makes typing more accurate.
The X230 keys felt slightly more slippery and not as textured as those on the X220
Keep in mind, those are just the perceived differences in feel.  The layout has changed from six rows to seven rows, which forces a repositioning of keys that could trip up users used to the old ThinkPad keyboard.  To name just a few:
The “Forward” and “Back” browser shortcut buttons above the left and right arrow keys are gone
PgUp and PgDn move from the top row down to above the left and right arrow keys
The Delete button has shrunk and moved further to the edge of the keyboard, which is almost impossible to reach without lifting the hand
Print Screen and Insert are both moved, the Pause button and Scroll Lock are gone
Home and End have been moved and are actually now more within reach of the pinky than before
All media key functionality using Fn + has been moved to the F1 – F12 function keys, this is a good thing and eliminates the scattered nature of media keys in previous generations
There are probably more differences in positioning, but those are the major ones.  I’ll also note that the Enter key is now black instead of blue and they’ve removed the “return arrow”.  In fact, a lot of the icons have been axed to make the look more clean, the arrows on the Shift key, Caps Lock and Tab keys are all gone.  It certainly does have the result of the keyboard looking more plain and clean.
The real test is of course whether your typing is affected by the changes.  I generally type at around 80 WPM so figured I’d do a typing test using this WPM online tool to see how I faired doing the test on the X220 and then the X230.  Look, I’m not here to make an advertorial for Lenovo but I got the exact same 76 WPM score on each notebook and was ever so slightly more accurate on the X230 where I made no mistakes.  Of course, that’s one trial run, but it’s all I had the patience for and figured it was enough to provide anecdotal evidence that most users should transition just fine.
ThinkPad X220 typing test: 76 Words per minute, one mistake made when I mistyped “M” instead of “N” for November (though there is such thing as Movember and it is a worthy cancer charity I might add)
ThinkPad X230 typing test: 76 Words per minute, exactly the same result as the X220 but no typing mistakes
Another new feature on the X230 is the keyboard backlight.  You can toggle between two levels of keyboard backlight brightness or use the ThinkLight positioned in the screen that shines down on the keys.  Here’s a video demoing how this looks and works:
And below is a picture of the backlight set at its strongest level:
Bottom line on the keyboard changes, the usability is still top notch and all of the essential keys such as alpha, numeric and common cursor movement keys are in the same location.  The biggest challenge with changes will be in regards to remapping your brain to find and reach the keys that moved such as Home, End and Delete.  The backlighting option is a definite improvement and recommended upgrade.
    Size and Weight
While the ThinkPad X230 weighs 2.96lbs when you use the small sized 4-cell battery, Lenovo isn’t changing its marketing to call this an Ultrabook.  The thickness ranges from 0.75-inches at the front to 1.05-inches at the back due to the slope.  The 1” thickness is fat compared to the 0.68” the upcoming ThinkPad X1 Carbon will have.  That under 3lbs of weight doesn’t hold for the standard 6-cell battery either, this review unit has a weight of 3lbs 7 ounces (3.44lbs).
    Full First Thoughts Review Here

    Thanks for the excellent review.
I am disappointed in the new keyboard choice, outside of the move to chiclet keys the move to 6 rows is just blasphemous.  As a user and owner of 10+ thinkpads, the x220 and t420s will be my last.
Lenovo may not even care as the general business consumer doesn't favor one keyboard style over the other, but legions of thinkpad fans will be left behind.  A sad state of things indeed.

  • Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."
It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

If you are running WIndows 7 on your X230, go into Power Manager and find the Battery Maintenance function.  Then run a Reset cycle on the battery and see how it comes up.
The microprocessor in the battery can get out of sync with the battery capacity the X230 think should be available and that can cretae the sort of issue you have described.  Resetting the battery will resync the on board micrprocessor in eth battery with the expected battery capacity in Power Manager.

  • Thinkpad X230 could not recognize external DVD burner

Hi, I received my Thinkpad X230 two weeks ago and was planning to make backup media.  However, X230 could not recognize my external DVD burner. It was not responding no matter which USB port I tried. The DVD burner works fine with my T400 and X201. Just want to know how to get X230 to work with the DVD burner so that I can make factory backup media. Thanks a lot!

    Hello,
Your external USB DVD±RW disc drive may require more power than can be provided via one USB port in order to burn DVDs.  Did the drive come with a "double-headed" Y-shaped USB cable to connect to two USB ports on the notebook?  If so, try plugging both of the large ends into the ThinkPad's USB ports and the small end into the external drive and then see if it is now recognized by the computer.

  • Optical Drive won't power on

    Hi everyone,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520, and my optical drive won't power on. The problem is that it is by default set on "safe to remove", and when I want to use it, I have to remove it first and then put it back. BUT that won't work unless I reboot the machine after removal. I searched on this forum, but I did not find the solution for so far.
I found some topics on the optical drive, which describe that one can toggle an option for activating the optical drive in Power Manager, which I can not find in my version (6.36).
Is there any solution for this? I would like the optical drive to be powered on by default, and not in the "safe to remove" mode, so I can use it any time without having to remove the optical drive and rebooting the system.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeroen

Well....it may be fine for you to accept an inferior item, not I. I paid for a unit that was supposed to be fully operational and work as designed. I will not accept having to reboot every time I want to put a CD or DVD into my computer! That's like having to restart your car so the headlights work. Even if one doesn't drive at night, you would still expect the headlights to work ANYTIME you want them without the extra steps. I know "where" the issue is and I know "why" the issue is BUT unfortunately, there is not a fix I can find. Between uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and applications and etc. I give up. They will replace my unit according to Lenovo, with a brand new laptop. Should this one have the same issue, I will be disputing my CC charge, and sending the unit back to them for a full and complete refund. I wish I had a copy of WIn8 or Win7 without Lenovo's proprietary software embedded. I bet the unit would work as designed then, but to have them rewrite or add software with hooks directly into the core system is a recipe for disaster. I encourage you to do something about yours also. The more people that ALLOW this "type" manufactured fleecing, the more it will occur.
I guess I will find out just how well this replacement process works.

  • ThinkPad X230 cannot shudown, suspend or hibernate

    Hello,
We have just bought 3 ThinkPad X230 and one of them has a problem; when i tried to do a suspend, the system comes back to the logon screen 1 or 2 second after the suspend, if I tried hibernate, the power button led flashes rapidely and the system restart and if i try to shutdown the machine, the machine restarts.
I am using the preload that was installed on the machine.
I have tried to restore the bios default settings -> NOK.
i have tried to upgrade the firmware of the SSD, no update needed -> NOK
I have tried to do a BIOS update -> NOK
I have used the machine without the battery, it's the same -> NOK
I have tried to use the machine only with the battery -> NOK
I have done the memory and SSD diagnostics, both are OK -> NOK
I have installed Windows 7 from scratch with all the lenovo drivers, same problem -> NOK
One thing is, as soon as I plug the machine on the AC adapter, the machines starts. Is this normal ? (i don't think so but I ask to be sure)
Another thing, the power button doesn't seem to work. I can press on the power button as long as i want, nothing happen (no suspend or 'forced' shutdown)
Does anyone have an idea what I can do ?
I think the machine has a hardware problem as the two others are OK.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Marc.

    Hi, MarcVDH
Due to all the testing you have tried thus far, I am inclined to agree with you about the issue being hardware-related. A clean install of Windows 7 should've fixed all software issues the machine may have been having. As such, I would recommend giving support a call at (0)2 339 3611 and telling them of your issue.
Also, as for the machine turning on when the AC adapter is attached, this is a BIOS setting in certain ThinkPads. I'm not sure if it is in the X230, but I know that it is available in the X220t. If you'd like to check, it can be found under Config ► Power in the BIOS.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • T30 won't power up right away

Ok here's my situation. I have a Ibm thinkpad pentium 4 t30 model 2366 labtop. At late, it won't start up until I do the following: Uplug power adapter & internet cord, then turn it over pull out the battery & wigggle the CMOS back up battery. Then put the battery back in turn it over, open it back up, hit the power botton a couple of times then it will start up. If not I have to do the above all over again, sometimes it takes maybe 3 times other time it works right away. When I just try starting it all the power lights come on for a second then shut off except for the z & battery light with the battery with the + sign on it. But that's it, no power. Someone suggested replaceing the Cmos, so I did and reset the date & time in the BIOS, (it was loseing time pryer to replacement) that worked maybe twice but now it's back to the same old ritual every time. Everything else seems to work just fine and the battery seems to be chargeing, but I guess I could check into that further if it might be an issue.
I know I'm gonna have to take it in probably, but I sure would like to just get an idea of whats wrong. I have online classes right now, so it's hard to leave it in the shop for any length of time. However, I'm afraid I might be doing more harm to the computer. Can anyone help me out here? I'm not exactly computer wize.
    Thanks

Try holding the Volume down and power button at the same time, this does a soft reset. Also, make sure you are charging the phone with the original charger that came with the phone.

        Oh no Mr.Ected!
I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.

  • Please Help! My iPhone 4 won't power on!

iPhone 4, out of warranty coverage, won't power on.
        1.    It has about 60% battery before it dead, but suddenly it became black screen and not responsive (like powered off).
        2.    Whatever I did, like "holding the power button and home button together for 10-25 sec and then pressing the power button again" etc. it just won't power on, no Apple logo!
        3.    But I can seen the "emergancy call" screen when I plugged it with my laptop and it just told me "No Service" at the upper left corner (status bar of iPhone 4).
        4.    iTunes can see it, but only when it was in Recovery mode or DFU mode.
        5.    I also tried to restore it to factory settings in iTunes, but it always gives me an error with various error codes, like 2001, 2006, etc. I also tried restore it under Windows or Mac, but was out of luck too!
        6.    Finally I bought a iPhone 4 battery replacement and replaced the old one with the new one, but nothing changed as if it wasn't replaced its original battery.
        7.    It keeps rebooting at every 10 min or so when It was plugged into my laptop without any operations (pressing any buttons).
        8.    It can be "powered on" only when it was plugged into a computer. It will IMMEDIATELY be in "dead mode" as long as I disconnect it from the computer (like taking out a battery from an iPhone that is powered on)!
        9.    Everything worked fine before it dead, I don't know what happened to it! I am so frustrated!
Please help! Thank you so much!

    USB Problem, possibly bad Cable.
I misread your original post "It keeps rebooting at every 10 min or so when It was plugged into my laptop".
I thought you had a boot loop problem, but you say "rebooting when plugged into laptop" this is not the typical boot loop problem, because you had the iPhone connected to laptop.
Connected by what, obvioulsy a USB Cable, Error 2006, is most often due to faulty USB Cable.
Clean that Dock Port Very Well especially with Isopropyll Alcohol, get a good USB Cable, try a different USB port on computer, or try a different computer.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem with the iPod. This is because as you said the same cable works with another iPod.

  • What is the best possible battery configuration on thinkpad x230?

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are
    1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?
    2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?
    3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

I have a Zagg Sparq which works quite well. I have the 1.0 version, but there are newer ones now. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if they're in any retail stores.
I can use it as a charger, or my version holds about one charge. The newer ones have more capacity.

  • Zen Vision:M 30GB won't power down; any ide

I've had a 30GB Zen Vision M for a couple of months now! Awesome player, went through the usual round of recognition problems, but it's been working fine of late. My problem is, it won't power down now. When I try to power down, the unit says it's powering down, the dispaly goes black except for the battery icon. And it stops there. The blue backlight on the menu buttons stays on, the battery icon stays on, and eventually it turns off after 5 minutes because of being idle. Not a terrible problem I know, but a real niusance. I am running the most current firmware (have been for a while). I've tried resetting and clean-up. No change. I'm afraid of trying to reinstall the firmware, in case I have the same problem that many others are having, and go from a good player with a power issue, to a player that does nothing. I can't see it being the power switch itself, since it powers up fine, and tries to power down. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. birder
