ThinkPad X60 Replacement Hard Drive - Will free fall sensor work with Active Protection System?

I plan to replace the OEM hard drive on my ThinkPad X60 with a Western Digital Scorpio Black drive. I found a board posting on Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Forum site that seems to indicate that APS will work with this drive. Here is my question: Is there any point in purchasing the drive with the free fall sensor option? (This is more expensive than the drive without the sensor.) Will this provide any additional protection above and beyond the Active Protection System. Will the internal free fall sensor in the drive be compatible with APS? In other words, should I buy a Scorpio Black with or without the free fall sensor?

If I were buying a replacement drive, I'd get one without a sensor, but that's me.
Having seen way too many laptops that have gone through a real "free fall" I'll say that a damaged hard drive in such an event is usually the least of one's problems...

Replaced hard drive- will not reboot

Replaced hard drive on hp compaq mini cq10- 120ca because it quit working and the diagnostics said the hard drive was no good. Had a back up flash drive, but when I tried to reboot it says the bootmgr is missing. The mini did not come with any back up cd. What can I do to remedy this, and how can I verify the flash drive is bootable. When I connect the flash drive to another computer it looks like all of the backup files are there. The easiest way is to get a recovery image from HP, please call HP call center and request a recovery image either via USB drive or CD type depends on your configuration.
If your original HDD is still workable, please re-install this HDD back. Boot up the system and locate the HP recovery manager, there shall be an option to create recovery media which can store all your image including the OS to the media.

I am swapping out my hard drive, will seagates 7200.9 work?

Hi I just bought a 17" imac. I am going ot swap the drive as soon as I get it and I am wondering if seagates 7200.9's will work? The have the 3.0 gb's/ sec interface. I am not sure if this is a different connection from the SATA 150? If it is will the 7200.8 work? I think I heard these are the drives the imac's ship with.

Yes, any SATA notebook HD in the 9.5mm (2.5") format will work.
As for the brand, to each his/hers own, but Seagate would be my personal preference.

Disappearing hard drive and sudden inability to work with files from my camera.

I was installing the photoshelter plugin and noticed my external hard drive was not displayed. I had to import the whole drive again. Now when I try to import from my cards I get the error that this version of LR cannot work with my camera files. It has been working with them for years so what's up?

It's a long shot, but if nothing more concrete is posted, as you had just installed Photoshelter, have you tried uninstalling it and seeing whether this makes a difference.

What format do I ned to make my external hard drives to enable them to work with both Mac and PC?

I'd like to format several external hrd drives to work with both my Mac Book Pro and a PC in the house. Disk utility says ok for esFat to wrok with both but techies say format as FAT.
Also, does size of external have an influence on the formatting option?

i agree with matt exFat is a hybrid with good compatibility between both windows and mac, but it has this problem with huge cluster size so it'll eat your hdd up.
if you are using it on a single windows pc you can install a HFS+ reader to that windows pc it'll enable you to read the hdd formatted HFS+ but you WON'T be able to write to it!!
anyway it's your choice since both are okay but personally i've formatted mine to HFS+ and installed a reader on the pc

WD Free-Fall Sensor in MBP

I'm considering putting the 320GB WD Scorpio Black 2.5", SATA II, 7200 rpm, 16 MB cache WD3200BJKT into a friend's current model MBP 15,4".
A while ago I read somewhere that the drive's built-in free-fall sensor conflicts with the one in the MBP itself. In the meantime I think I've read that the issue has been resolved with a software/firmware upgrade.
Can anyone confirm that? Is it safe to use this HDD in the current generation MBP?
Any advice appreciated.

I did replace the drive with WD3200BJKT as the one without sensor was not available at the moment. I turned off the Apple SMS as you suggested.
However, when I entered the command into Terminal, it displayed two warnings. I did not write it down at the time, but it had something to do with the drive being at zero when the computer was at zero or something like that. It looked like it was an Energy Saver Preference Pane thing as it displayed it twice, as I mentioned, for the time when computer runs on battery and power supply.
At the time I entered the command, the option "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" was NOT checked in either the Battery or Power Adapter pane in System Preferences.
So after I disabled the SMS and saw the two warnings I checked the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" options in System Preferences.
Any thoughts on that?

Note, Airport Extreme on PowerMacs is limited to 802.11g. If you find you get a router that is 802.11n, and have devices that need 802.11n speed, they should be on a different wireless network. Otherwise you can set the network to be 802.11n and 802.11g for both 'n' and 'g' devices to hook up to it from the router in question. Be sure the PowerMac in question does support Extreme, and not just the original Airport by visiting this article:

You can do this - by not doing it the way You describe as it will not work.
a. the external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO (iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut doesn't matter)
b. Do not alter or move any folder named
• iMovie Event's - or -
• iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - at all
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done within the iMovie Application - then connections will not break.
(move them back and see if iMovie remembers them - then do move as described above)

What will Apple charge me to replace hard drive?

My iMac hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced (according to Disk Utility). What will Apple charge me to replace hard drive or should I just do it myself? Purchased new in mid-2010 and I do not have AppleCare. I've seen videos on replacing the hard drive and it seems a bit tricky. Any advice?

Since replacing hard drive, "restore previous session" button doesn't work, can only do it through history tab. Also will not start up from task bar icon.

Hi, been using Firefox for some years, had to replace hard drive recently and re loaded Firefox. Since then, the restore previous session button doesn't work, but I can do it from the History tab. Also Firefox itself won't start from the task bar or desktop, only the start menu.

Need replacement Hard Drive, What model?

My computer has recently failed, and I ended up taking it to best buy's Geek squad. (I know I know, but it was free). They determined that my hard drive had failed and would need to be replaced. However they said the drive was a PATA drive and not a SATA and would therefore be more difficult to find a replacement for. They recommended that I just buy a new computer.
My question is: will a SATA or SATA II drive be compatible with this computer? Everything I read about the T61P is that they used SATA hard drives. If so, is there a way I can find which hard drives will be compatible with my computer?
The computer in question is a T61p purchased in December 2007. The factory hard drive it came with was the 100GB 7200 rpm one.
I should also mention that the CD/DVD drive has failed so it will be difficult to use a recovery disk. I have a USB external CD drive, but not sure if that will be operational without the drivers installed.

Once again, the legendary Geek Squad to the rescue...NOT.
Every single T61 that rolled off the assembly line used SATA drives, and nothing but SATA drives.
The last ThinkPads that utilized PATA drives were T43/p two generations earlier.
So yes, you can install *any* 9.5 mm laptop SATA hard drive or SSD in your T61 but...given the competence of the crew that had diagnosed the patient in the first place, how can we be certain that it's indeed the hard drive that had failed?

Replacement hard drive for late 2008 Macbook Pro

I need to replace my drive in a late 2008 Macbook Pro 15". I can access the battery and what looks like the hard drive from the underside, if this helps. Would this be a good replacement choice?

Finding exact specs for the drive has been tricky, or maybe I just need to have the physical size verified. What I know/have found is:
5400rpm       (would a 7200rpm improve performance, or am I limited by hardware?)
SATA II        (does this matter tese days?)
2.5" drive   (needs verification)
open drive? (do I need this or not?)
Any other options or advice? I'd like to spend a small amount since this is an older computer and won't be around a whole lot longer anyway. Thanks in advance!

The link you posted above is for a WD drive,....dont get it.   WD drives (some) have SMS sensor coflicts with Mac, and the consumer grade western digital HD are the worst you can buy.

SMART Hard Disk Error - Replace Hard Drive?

A couple of days ago I recieved an error when I started my computer (HP Pavilion dv6-6071eo), saying "SMART Hard Disk Error" followed by a message telling me that the SMART hard disk check has detected and imminent failure. It told me to backup my files and then press F2 and run a hard disk test. On the last row it displayed "Hard Disk 1 (301)". I tried to run the hard disk test, which failed instantly. I also ran the BIOS hard disk test. It passed the short test without problems and then stopped rather shortly after the long test started with the error "Hard Disk 1 Full 305". My computer has also been running slowly over the last week. From what I've read so far it seems I have to replace my Hard Drive. Is this correct? Also, would it be worth it (and possible) upgrading to an SSD for noise and heat reduction, which is a problem with this laptop (and several other simular laptops from HP) compared to other laptops. Have you checked to see if there is any free space left on the hard drive? A full hard drive will make the system run very slowly and it can also keep the system from working properly if it is full enough. The fact that you pass the short test means there is nothing major mechanically wrong with the drive. Just right click on the icon for the main drive likely C:\ in "Computer: and select "properties". If the drive is not actually full then I suggest replacing it. Yes, if you can afford an SSD there is no question that is the way to go. There is nothing not good about an ssd other than an occasional struggle to install it. I have been using ssds for a while and I have never had the installation problems we often see reported here but don't be dissuaded, we are here to help .

where is your library located? there is an iPhoto library folder on my desktop with random photos & albums - not all - put there by me - i vaguely remember a problem with iPhoto when i upgraded from snow leopard
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring? after the drive replacement i uploaded saved data from a week old back up and found iphoto looking somewhat sick - no updates were offered in software updates
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library? i'm afraid i do not know what that means
